Nah it's not skill issue I have the same issues like why does it crop that image also I don't like the brushes in procreate cuz the overall look seems extremely soft for my liking I prefer more sharper brushes I have used Fresco for free and that feels way better and I generally use clip studio paint with my Huion Kamvas display tablet cuz I don't want to pay subscription also Procreate still doesn't have a shape tool also no support for vector layers
@@Aman_Mondal you can make your own brushes in procreate also buy other people's brushes that can make it easier to draw and whats your liking its pretty simple and easy to make shape tools just look at a tutorial saying "how to create my own brushes on procreate" and thats it. also there are sharp tools maybe you're just looking at airbrushes? idk
My biggest pet peeve with procreate is that it shows you brush size in percentage rather than pixels, and the percentage varies between each brush so 2% on brush A can be WAY bigger than 2% on brush B and it honestly annoys me so much and I don't understand why there isn't an option to just display it in pixels. This is why I use Artstudio Pro instead which is basically a mix of Procreate and Photoshop, honestly recommend it and it pains me to see how 95% of ipad users never even heard of it and just default to Procreate because it's what everyone uses
BRUUUH FR it threw me off SO BAD. and the % isn't even the same between brushes because their maximum/minimum size values are different and it's SO INFURIATING like CAN'T YOU JUST TELL ME BOTH AT THE SAME TIME??? 😭AND 1% can have MULTIPLE pixel sizes in it so if you don't nail exactly where you had it before it's gonna be sliiightly different RAUGHGHHAAUGHAGRAUGH
@@lunar_proxy exactly, you gotta judge by the little brush stamp preview because on some brushes you can be at 1% size and it will be twice as big than... 1%. Like every other art program I've seen uses pixels, it's what I'm used to and it works, why try to be unique with something that's objectively worse, if you're gonna reinvent the wheel make it better not more annoying
I love procreate but there are reasons why I still finish every piece in photoshop 😭 it's great as a "just pick it up and start drawing" app bc you don't get overwhelmed by all the ui options, but if you're skilled with a program that has those options, you really start missing them
Dude, procreate is not simple in the slightest, when I tried it I was so overwhelmed by how much nothing there was, nothing was clearly labelled, which makes it so complicated and messy and confusing
avid procreate user here, the only complaint i've really had about this program is the fact that whenever i resize/move something with the lasso tool, it just makes it blurry and not sharp and i end up having to redraw the lineart over the original because i made a stupid mistake
@@Sadakorka its more like i like working on big canvases. I think its a 2020 model but overal i tend to like working on bigger canvases and that eats up my layer limit
I can totally understand this! I tend to use standard canvas size anyways so it doesn’t usually bother me, but occasionally when I need a higher resolution, the layer limit gets eaten up SO quickly lol.
Many things were unanswered or not resolved in their forums. There are great ideas to implement and improve upon in procreate. Instead they made procreate dreams which also needs a lot of work.
As someone who did use ibis but gradually turned to procreate when first getting an iPad, I find it hard to revert back and sometimes I wish my brain could cause sometime Procreate gets really confusing and stressful but I just love at the same time
literally the reason i went and bought procreate is because of my photoshop brushes. I used ibis for years and they are are easier to use but i just hate it that i cant use my own brushes.
@@TadpoleArtz i've used krita for YEARS and i found procreate annoying... but i've gotten a bit more used to it now, it's nice to doodle in it but for more serious stuff i'd probably use krita again... it's just better
I still use Ibis and got Procreate but barely use it 😅 still wanna get another art program though just so I know I’m capable of working on multiple programs and can have more options for certain stuff
@@amateurbarnabyYou can make your own brushes! Kinda. I always do this when I draw on Ibispaint X, and it’s an add (or sometimes none!) to use all of the brush stuff for… 18 hours I think?
omg thank you for addressing these issues, i felt insane thinking i was the only procreate disliker. every art program i ever used always had its features (ex: layers, brush lists, brush settings etc) laid out infront of the user but for some reason procreate hides them??? which is fine but having to do all those extra clicks just to increase stabilization feels like a step backwards and needlessly complicated. like sure procreates layout is nice an minimalistic, but at the cost of being less intutitive
OMg that's my exact issue!! It's too minimalistic for me, I had a phase a while back where it was all I used but going back to it now after a long time with Csp I just can't TvT I need my tools laid out in front of me so I can remember they're there!!
@@aussieaxolotl1671 SAME i wish procreate didnt make it so hard to find every setting, it slows down my art process significantly. i think thats why i adore CSP so much lol theres a billion buttons and settings and i dont have to look up a manual to find them all so i can draw without feeling hindered
Yeah, it’s like having to open the drawer where all your tools and paints are over and over while you’re working instead of just leaving them all out on the table in easy reach at all times.
@@Solgaleos me but with Artstudio Pro, just throw whatever you need on the tool bar (like, pretty much anything in app can be made into toolbar shortcut) and don't go digging for whatever you need every second
this is honestly so helpful, bc i always see ppl praising it. praise isn't a bad thing, but these videos are good in that ik what parts of the app i won't like and if it's for me or not.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but for the eyedropper tool you can change it to just instead of in the gesture settings. I found it helpful when I do a lot of eyedropping!
OMG yes to all of this!! Especially the cropping and layer visibility. Recently got a Kamvas Pro + CSP and I was genuinely surprised the first time I moved something outside the canvas and it didn’t get cropped out. I’ve been working with Procreate for far too long 😂
My biggest issue with procreate is that you can't change the folder's opacity and you can't create clipping groups AND you can't create clipping layers for folders. This is a very big issue to me because I use all of these functions all the time in other programs
6:34 I use Krita and it counts layer visibility in the history. Personally I don't have a problem with it, because I can have a lot of layers and not know what I've accidentally made invisible, so it's useful since I can just quickly undo it and get back to drawing!
1. the intrusive autosave is a dealbreaker for me. i want to decide when to save, i dont want the app to decide that. sometimes i want to experiment around and dont want to save my experimental changes. theres a reason every professional desktop app has a "save as" option. 2. if you open the app in split view it takes away some tools. 3. dont like minimalistic UIs. i want all my tools and options.
especially if you crop around or use to many effect layers, app is prone to crash, so I always have to make a safety copy of my project before doing something that could crash it and ruin my entire project I mean, I'm happy it autosaves - _but then don't delete the undos with leaving the app!!!_
I’m honestly personally glad procreate auto-saves, it’s miles better than forgetting to or the program crashing and not saving. I’ve mentioned this in another reply to a comment but try duplicating the canvas then making changes, I do that all the time when I want to experiment radically but not sure if I’ll like it better than the original
surprised you didn’t include the inferior paint bucket tool 😭 CSP paint bucket tool has treated me way too good so whenever I switch to procreate I’m always shocked at how bad the paint bucket is on there. my workflow is so much faster on CSP so I end up switching programs when I want to do colors on a big piece. but for doodles I just use the lasso tool and use the color fill option bc rn that’s the fastest way to get flat colors on procreate
Just had the opposite lol. Got csp yeaaars ago when I wasn't ready for that advanced of an interface and it scared me into using procreate. Switched over a few days ago and I will not shut up about how damn good CSP's fill tool is oh my god its HEAVEN
@@localkate You should try using the user-made Better Fill Tool in their asset store! All you have to do is set the lineart layer(s) as reference in the layer section and IT'S EVEN MORE OF A DREAM.
I totally agree with all of these! ..I have one to add: no separate effect/adjustment layers. Unless I'm mistaken, you need to combine all the layers to then apply them to then mess around with effects to apply to the entire image!! I have to duplicate my artwork and flatten it all just to further adjust.
Yes this!!! I quite enjoy procreate, but I have worked with sai before and am missing the feature of clipping layers to folders and play around with effects and overlays without merging everything 🥲
Not sure if this will help, but try duplicating the canvas then merging all the layers, that way you still have your old un-merged canvas if you mess up :)
YES. The stabilizer on procreate is so unbelievably different from every other program I’ve used, and even if both streamline and stabilization is turned off I still notice this subtle delay with the brushes that doesn’t carry over in other mobile art programs. I always wondered if the brushes by default have a bit of stabilization to them even when it’s turned all the way down, but I always thought I was just insane for thinking so!!!!! I’m relieved that I am not crazy, and that I do not need to be sent to an institution
Your reason number 3# is the reason I switched years ago. I love using the lasso and transform tools and blurred pixels don't cut it. ArtStudio Pro forever! XD
Try switching your settings to nearest neighbor on procreate! It lets art latch on to pixels when you resize it and it does a pretty great job of resizing without losing quality. It was a game changer for me lol
For the eye dropper tool I have it binded on the square button between the sliders. With my work flow, my left hand does all the adjusting of size, opacity and eye-dropping. (Undo and redo should be part of the left hand chores for more efficiency but I got used to doing it with my dominant right hand) Blending is relatively easy with this type of set-up. I don’t use the keyboard since I don’t feel the need to but it would be really helpful for keyboard users if it had one. ^^
Very valid points. I'm back-and-forth between CSP and ProCreate, but I think I'll stick to ProCreate for now. The brush engine on CSP feels so much better, but ProCreate just flows better. Maybe a hybrid-workflow in the future (ProCreate for sketching, CSP for lineart + rest). A 16" iPad would be amazing to handle CSP a bit better :D
i think you should just submit a letter \ talk with the guys at procreate. - adding an option in menu what "count" as action to fall back in the action history sounds like easy to do. - same thing on adding "are you sure you want to leave" or even save X amount of actions should be easy to add. - resize engine, you can point it out, but i think after procreate dreams(i think solved there), they should fix it. -> in my opinion its feel like a bug they never solved. - cloud is also feel weird they didnt fix it. in my opinion its also a bug - keyboard shortcut, huge for me too, i wish they will work on it as well. about the cropping, layer limit, resize, i think most of them been solved in procreate dreams, and slowly will be pushed to procreate. but i think you need to mail them your points, as they are valid in the most case, and should be easy to implement.
I completely stopped using the app, so I don't think it's any use to try to get them to fix the issues to fit my needs lol. But someone else could try emailing them if they use the app a lot!
@@samijen you stopped because of this features, without even trying to get an answer from it. its not "someone else" its everyone of us that have something like this, for exmaple the back button for layer drive me crazy sometimes too, but i think if each of us try to show them the chance of it been improve is bigger. and , CSP vs Procreate, i prefer procreate, as CSP going in wrong direction and there software feels slower with each update, and they not listening to the community, and became greedy as hell.
@@danielr7599 Procreate is pretty much no longer updated though. The only updates we get recentley are maintainance updates. It's been ages since we got any feature updates and since they made dreams, they seem to have put all of their programming team on that.
@@danielr7599 so if you also have the same issues with it and you DO use the app, why don't YOU submit these problems to the devs as opposed to the person that has altogether stopped using it???? it just doesn't make sense that you're complaining to someone about not reporting these issues when they've already stated they don't wanna use the app anymore, so it's no longer their concern.
@@mikaelam.4524 First: I did report a thing or two in the past. Second, i am not with 50K followers + 10K views on the video, she is pretty much complaining on Porcreate been bad, and thats fine, but going and bitch about the program that mean trying to make "click bait" , or full video agenst procreate, without even asking them about the features. this is the main problem, first you go and ask procreate, than you make a video " 5 Things i wish procreate will fix, and they dont plan too so i stick with CSP" thats something i agree, but coming and saying its not a good app (yes you sayng for you, but lets be real here people follow you will listen to it and it will change there views). there is a different from influencer to some online person committing on a video.
Yes! The confusing brush settings and the keyboard shortcuts are the main reason I only use my ipad/procreate for sketching and all of my painting and other work I do in PS on my laptop.
8:40 The shortcut for the eyedropper is the square below the brush size tool. You can use it for that or change it into a quick shortcuts menu. Just saying!
@@Gyouseii I think you can just hold your finger on the screen for a few seconds and drag around to pick colors as well. At least that's what I always did. I didn't even know there was a tool for that.
i started digital art with firealpaca where they tracked layer visibility in the history so i got used to it!! it was pretty handy to use undo and redo to turn a layer on and off, rather than hovering over the buttons with the pen. this has made csp hard to switch to because sometimes ill undo way too much work while wondering why the layer isn't turning off 😭😭
I started using procreate when csp started having monthly payment system. But omg I miss csp so much!!! I loved how they had one website where you could download brushes and there were plenty of free options that were actually good and usable brushes! I really like procreate too but after learning digital art with cps for so many years it just doesn't feel the same...
For me, I love procreate. I love how simple the interface is. It is easy to work with and easy to learn and adapt to. I feel like keyboard shortcuts would be fun to use and maybe would make my process quicker. I hope they fix it to make it customizable. The only thing i wish would be fixed is the vector graphics and stuff? if we could change what we use that would be nice. But its not really a reason for me to change over from my affordable art app to a montly subscription. Literally, something going from one time purchase to monthly subscription infuiriates me to no end. I was planning on purchasing CSP but then they pulled the monthly payment shit and I was out of there so fast.
@@wildmaknae_ at the beginning, I say "For me," In my world. For someone who's had struggles learning photoshop and other interfaces like it. I caught on to procreate's ui very quickly. I watched one or two procreate tutorials and I was pretty much set. I made really cool artwork in under 4 hours on day 1! For someone who started out on IBIS paint and finger and eventually got procreate on an Ipad and apple pencil. For me it was easy to learn and once you learn the little functions its very easy to navigate. :)
I use procreate and I like it! But I hate that it don’t have a normal “magic wand” and gap recognisation! Like I use “sketch” brush as an outline (I think it is a part of my style) and the program don’t recognise it as a fine line… so each time I have to make a grayscale just to have a correct selection
real and as someone with an also “sketchy” artstyle, that’s itself is limiting. It feels as tho the app like prefers like painty or NOT THAT style 😭 does that make sense??? like along w the stabilization thing
This is so true, as someone who has a messy textured lineart and style i really wish they made a better fill tool with gap recognition, its sad they haven't made any changes for artists who are in the messier style and not for people who have clean lineart or do calligraphy;;
I personally just use Artstudio Pro and swap my files between it and Procreate for different effects because they do like 90% of the same things but the 10% they don't, I have to bear with Procreate's wacky interface for lol
thank you thank you THANK YOU for reading my mind, GOD I tried to get into procreate years ago, but the brushes are weird, it all feels small, I feel like I have to press too damn hard when drawing, even with a sketch brush, its kinda buggy. It's nothing like CSP that feels like just like a PC program, I feel like nothing is missing, it makes a huge use of the screen, even the default brushes on CPS are more complete (well, you get what you pay for). The only good thing I can feel is how minimalistic it is 😭. We ALL have a different ways to work, I'm still glad procreate exist because it is a really good alternative for people with a much different and quick workflow as mine.
You wanna know what really grinds my gears? Re-arranging brushes in Procreate is the most stressful thing ever due to how poorly responsive it is, at times it works and at times doesn't, other times it simply moves it to an incorrect place.
Ipad+procreate combo is great for beginner/advanced artists but I'm sure I will have to switch to Clip Studio eventually just because of the limitations you mentioned like the layers and the fact that the Procreate app does bug out sometimes and is really janky but I'm used to it by now. I would love to own a larger wacom tablet for my PC one day. Portability and the fact its so cheap is great. Screw running subscriptions. I will always support one time purchases.
You are definitely right. Don't say these reasons are stupid, they aren't at all. Indeed, they are really very annoying and make the application appear not at all professional, but for an amateur audience who likes to have fun and draw every now and then, as a hobby. So everything you said is true, I agree with you, these gaps are extremely annoying for those working with their art. I'm sorry, but it's not a question of skills, it's a question of the developers not having designed this application for a professional audience. Great video, I laughed when you showed the fact that it cuts everything off the canvas, because at first I was angry about this too 🙈 There are also a lot of other things that you didn't mention that are really annoying. In short, I think I will never use procreate haha
While not ideal, for the color picker tool, I binded the "square button" (the thing between the size and opacity sliders) to the color picker. So, I simply press on that button to active the color picker and touch the screen on the color that I want with the pencil to change color - and there's no need to wait. But when I'm constantly using that button to pick the color, I happen to also accidently change the size of my brush instead- I swear that "sqaure" button is way too small sometimes lmao.
I have some more additional pet peeves. The way how textured brushes seem to be bound to the drawing area so the size doesnt matter. How you can randomly end up with a bunch of small lines or dots on your canvas since it will respond to your hand sometimes. The filling leaving half opacity pixels despite having the fill set to 99.9% (and more equals filling the whole canvas). The lack of basic layer property effects such as border. And the lack of clipping masks. I think its a great tool for starters but I feel like you have to finish in other software to have access to the most basic effects.
You are so right about all these things!! ALSO - they don't have a quick button you can make, you can't just tap to get standard pencil and eraser, you have to go back into the brush, change size and opacity and all that. Procreate is supposed to be more of a 'real-life' tool, like here's your pencil and paper in an app. So it's good for simplicity. My gripes are with the unintentional bugs they won't fix, like 'erase with same brush' just straight up does not work. And so many more glitchy things.
I personally really like that layer visibility is in the history because I go back to get colors from old drawings a lot, and it’s just easier to hit the undo button to switch them back on or off to get back to the original state of the drawing.
I think Procreate is for intuitive artists that come from oil or acrylic painting and CSP or PS is for cartoonists, manga artists, animators, illustrators who work in publishing or draw with a lot details.
For me Procreate feels SLOW AF. Moving layers around, creating folders and putting stuff into it takes ages and those animations are way too long😭. Im really used to the quick navigating in CSP lmao. Also you cannot clip anything onto existing folders which annoys me because im using it a lot :( You are mentioning every single problem i have with this app and i will always finish my drawings in CSP. Procreate is nice for sketching and doodling but no way am i gonna full render a big piece there
4:47 I think that's exaclty why they do it. When an image is imported that is smaller than the canvas, it retains its exact size, somI see no reason why this would be different for larger images outside of their cropping issues
For me I actually have another issue with it, I don’t know if it’s just my iPad but when it comes to the speedpaint feature it turns super low quality and pixelated and it stays that way when exported
You have to set the video settings under the canvas size you're using to 2k/4k and studio quality/loseless in order for both the full timelapse and exported timelapse to not be low quality-it takes up quite a bit of space though so I just keep it at a low resolution 😭
I would never stop using procreate. I’ve been using that app for a while now. I did try other apps but I somehow never felt comfortable on any other app. I feel like procreate has everything I need, because I’m a pencil artist that’s draw with paper, so if I did on procreate app I won’t gonna need as much as you need.
Just opened the video but before it might or might not get said but: VECTOR LAYERS! I genuinely miss clip studio's ability to just have that? Edit: I'm saying I want to return to CSP just for vector layers specifically. It's sad, but I refuses to pay a sub for a program I have on my PC
CSP does have vector layers. Make sure your layer UI is stretched out enough to show more options since when its at its minimum, it only shows new layer, folder, merge etc. Its there, its just hidden away at first
I am not a digital artist yet (ordered my tab, it's gonna take 3-4 days to come) but I keep hearing about vector layers in some csp tutorials, and as a physic student, I am confused, is it the same vector? If it is then how can it be used?
honestly yeah, i used csp and procreate for years and csp is honestly just so more comfortable to use once you get used to it.. everything from brushes to cropping to layer limits is so much better. if csp wasn’t subscription based for ipad i would’ve fully switched ages ago
Omg the back button!!! I almost wanted to cry the first time I realized it cancels the undo history 😭😭😭 another thing I dislike is the lack of ruler for straight lines and shapes! I know you can hold a line but the angle is rarely correct and all my shapes end up as a crooked polygon 😅
The accidentally hitting gallery issue actually happened to me a LOT to the point I left feedback saying it would be a nice change to at least give a warning before exiting. I made a lot of stickers and would design them all on one canvas, then crop and export them one by one, undoing after. So many times I cropped them accidentally pressed gallary. >< I like procreate for sketching, thumbnailing and just initial design work, but I prefer Clipstudio for the rest. I think it works really well for younger artists that want to learn and find the price or the interface of other programs too much, but for more professional work I think its often too inconvinient.
I have always used android or Microsoft systems and ended up with an iPhone for a while. It was such a pain to use. The camera was great. But I never fully figured out how to use the phone beyond operating the web browser. Everything else sucked.
Wonderful video! I considered dipping my toes into Procreate pool, but I am also a Photoshop kid for life and a messy artist with 200+ layers. All the reasons that you mentioned in this video will drive me up the wall in no time, and it's a price too big to pay, not even considering the price of an iPad itself. Thank you for saving my time and money! 👍
The cropping issue and the weird stablization is the worst for me. I mostly use it to sketch thumbnails and practice. But if it helps, your Procreate art was glorious!
8:47 for the eyedropper, you can click the little square between brush size and opacity and automatically toggles the eyedropper. It's not the same of having a shortcut, but you can click it with the finger of your free hand while the others keep drawing :)
Thank you so much for point out those "issues" with the app, you made me save a ton of money. The killer for me was layer limit and the cropping thing. It's really good to watch a video like this, showing likes and dislikes about the app features and configs. Everybody always show procreate as ultimate/flawless/must have app for art, and now I see it's not all that. Big thanks again, wish you the best =)
YES TO ALL OF THOSE. Also I HATE how it handles smoothing/stabilization. If you have unstable hands like me and you need the stabilization, it feels like the app is fighting against you.
I haaaaaaaaate the way the brushes feel so smooth and perfect. I know it makes me sound insane but I liked digital art because it emphasised the scratchy feel of Lino prints and paper and ink on metal! With procreate everything just looks to shiny. I have all the smoothing stuff is turned to zero yet I can still feel it correcting my brush strokes. Ugh I have no idea how to express it but I want my art to feel crusty and pointy and rough around the edges not smoothed and ironed out:( I feel like someone is trying to take the punk out of my drawings and I don’t like it. It’s a very good program for people who want to get into digital art tho and are put off by the rigid interfaces of csp and photoshop. It’s so strange wanting to fight your program only for your punches to bounce back at you. I feel like nobody talks about this aspect of digital art.
Wow ,as a person who use ibispaint first in my life and have tried procreate and clip studio, I really don't like procreate just because its UI. I don't even know "what the heck is that and what is this!!?" It's hard to know how to use and they have to click a lot to use its function! I really like ibispaint more even it is also turn my picture to pixels and cut it off TT. And now I use clip studio which the UI is too many for Ipad but it makes work good.
I feel like I'm forced to use procreate because that's the standard and it's put me off exploring digital art SO MUCH. I'm a graphic designer and very comfortable with Photoshop. Might try clip studio instead
For the last few weeks I had been obsessing over wanting to buy an ipad SOLELY for Procreate (I personally don't like Apple ecosystem but Procreate seemed enticing). After watching this video, omg you just saved my wallet big time! I'm sooo used to using Photoshop and CSP ever since I started digital art, so I can't imagine being limited by Procreate's restrictions. Thank you so much for sharing your honest thoughts 💖
My main issue is that they don’t have an option to do vectoring! I do a lot of art that needs nice clean lines and can’t stand the pixilation! Unfortunately, I don’t think vectoring will be a feature anytime soon. I do agree about the auto save… that would be an amazing feature! The thing that bothers me the most is, and this may be something I haven’t found how to stop, is the constant accidental undoing! I have tried using a glove… but it still happens? Does anyone know how to change that? If you do, I would REALLY appreciate some advice! P.S.-just in case someone asks, I did use the option to only paint with my Apple Pencil.
I know you mentioned it, but my problem with other iPad art apps is that they are subscription based, and the only way to use an art app without it being extremely limited is watch ads (which I find extrmemely disruptive), or pay a monthly fee. Which means that, if for whatever reason (because life happens) you can't afford that subscription, you just....can't do art? At least not without significantly more effort than it's worth without the majority of the tools. And maybe any w.i.p artwork you have at the time can technically still be accessed, but why would you want to work on it when you no longer have access to the feautures you did when you started it? With Procreate, you buy it one time, and it's yours forever. Sure, it has its limitations, but for me personally, once I got used to it, I've really enjoyed it. The only qol thing that still bothers me is the lack of cloud backups, but like you said, I just back up my work manually. An extra step that would be a nice qol improvement to not have to take, but it's also not a deal breaker for me.
Recently had to remote wipe my iPad for security reasons and in doing so lost four years of art on procreate… since I already have to redownload everything and I have a clean slate I’ve decided to look into alternatives. This video was super informative thanks!
My biggest issue with procreate is the eyedropper tool tbh. It’s very inefficient to swap a pen for a finger and you cannot change it in gestures either (it doesn’t have an option of just pressing with pen, you need to use finger or a button in almost all of them), so it feels very weird. As a person who grew up on ibis (because that’s literally the best option for free), I just can’t for the love of god get used to having to swap all the time like that. I do blending a lot (and I usually work on one layer for coloring), so if you’re someone who does a lot of manual color blending or realistic art it might be very frustrating. (Although maybe I’m just weird, I dunno🤷)
Procreate for me is just a casual program with limited functions, but I’ve greatly improved my workflow with a little external shortcuts keyboard. So stuff like brush size up/down, eyedropper, eraser/brush, undo/redo, etc etc are just one key press instead of having to gesture with my hands.
8:59 There is another wa6 to get the colour. You know that little square in between the thickness and opacity sliders? If you press that and then the colour you want, it works. Personally I find it easier to just hold it like you are in the video.
i had used photoshop, paint tool sai and CSP before procreate and honestly you couldnt have said it better 💯 if you're new to digital art or havent used any other drawing software, procreate will seem good enough, but if u've tried others its obvious that procreate is lacking alot
I hate the eyedropper! I personally have a bit shaky fingers, it usually haven't been a problem with other programs; but with procreate it keeps just making a dot with the selected brush, instead of selecting the color! I also hate the glaze settings in procreate, its weird that you cant just turn it off completely imo. You just have to put it to intense glaze, and if you dont choose one of the intese options, it makes the opacity slider completely useless. and for some reason, I (personally), really struggle with doing lineart on procreate?? I dont even know why its so difficult, but it just looks so... Weird and off-putting, as if I traced someone elses drawing? I dont know if its bc of the stabilization not being the right setting or what. But at the same time, it's one of the best options out there on ipad- that isn't a subscription model.
Photoshop actually records the layer visability as well (5:42), thought I d mention it since if ur watching this vid ur porbably trying to decide what art program ud want to use ^^
tbh this is just a big list for procreate creators to fix with time, im sure that eventually these issues will be fixed, like, not liking the minimal UI? make an option to personalize the workspace (like photoshop or unity do), cludsafe? add an option to be able to link procreate to icloud, stuff like that, all of isues i have with this program could easily be fixed (not the isuess related to performance like layer cap and that stuff but personaly it dosent bother me)
8:44 I can see what’s bugging you, but below the brush resize slider there’s a little box- if you click on that it brings up the little magnifier to select a new colour. Just saying because it seemed to be annoying that you hand to use the hand holding your pencil- hope this helped! :)
I started using Procreate once I ‘permanently borrowed’ my mom’s Apple Pencil, and now I am never going back. I used to be a mouse MS paint artist for many years (I know, the horror) with assistance from Paint Tool Sai. I have basic drawing tablets for my computer but I just can’t get into them, so my iPad with the Apple Pencil has been a miracle. I can finish drawings in a few days instead of 2 months because drawing with a mouse takes ages and I’d get bored lol. That being said, as an artist with a not very complicated style, there were a few things that irked me: -Layer limit. My iPad is old but not exactly ancient and I like having as much room as I need in a canvas, so I usually end up having not a lot of layer wiggle room. I have progressively remedied this by not making as many layers and drawing certain things on the same layer to save space (and I’m too paranoid to merge layers until I’m done, so) -This program devours my iPad’s battery. Once I’m at about 40+ layers, the battery can go from 80% to 20% in less than an hour; it’s terrifying. I again remedy this by just keeping my iPad constantly plugged in while I draw, but I can also just feel the sheer amount of *heat* my iPad is giving off trying to run a complicated drawing. You could probably bake something on it. -When I first started using it, I found the UI overwhelming and honestly not very intuitive. I also wasn’t really finding much help with their official information for where stuff is, so I just learned as I went (since I used Paint Tool Sai for a while, it took me forever to figure out what Alpha Lock did because PTS had a different name for it). Even now I know there’s some features that would make parts of my process much easier, but I don’t know where they are and I’ll just stick to what I know. I think that’s how a lot of artists are. “This method to draw this sucks and I know it sucks but that’s how I’m used to it” haha I haven’t really run into certain peeves other artists might’ve had since again, my style is relatively simple with minimal lighting and shading, so my outlook on Procreate is more neutral. It’s my favorite art program so far, at least, but I still have some issues with it 👍
Procreate is amazing for just picking up your ipad and sketching something out with minimal distractions, but my biggest thing is for more serious work it's missing some trivial features you would find in say CSP, or you have to do some weird workaround. For example, I paint a subject using many layers and now I want to process it a bit with some correction layers. In csp I could just folder all the layers and apply a clipping mask to that folder in a new layer. In procreate I can't do that; the equivalent would be to make a selection out of multiple layers together (I don't think you can even do that), or just merge all those layers into one (highly prefer not to). Also the document management is a bit lackluster just like you said
I don't think it's supposed to be for professionals to be honest. If it's only $10, it's just to casually sketch something. And then you just take it into Photoshop or clip studio to finish it. I'd rather them increase the price of it to make it a full app with everything
Super love procreate but primarily use it for sketching. Having the minimalist UI can feel super freeing to just get idea generation going. Love Photoshop but all the bells and whistles can be intimidating and feel super formal when I just want to bang out an idea without much thought to it. It's especially notable for my process because I am very much someone who describes and illustrates form via linework rather than taking the more painterly/sculpterly approach. That being said, it feels rewarding when pulling Photoshop after the sketching stage and doing actual rendering and painting. Two completely different modes. Procreate keeps it fun for me while Photoshop keeps me a professional
I'm glad that I used procreate in school and didn't buy an ipad. I realized the program is annoying to use. The only thing I liked was being able to draw on an ipad because I could take it with me in my backpack. They also do have some nice brushes. One reason you didn't add (unless I missed it) was that the fill selection tool is terrible.
This is the kind of review that should make the app better. Bravo. I have seen way too many digital artists that never touch anyrhing aboyt these issues. Great video. Excelent job.
The complaint about it not being saved to the cloud is REAL. I was once trying to delete a single piece and accidentally deleted my portfolio folder. I stopped drawing for like 2 years after that.
Petty reasons to dislike an app are totally valid. I can’t stand Spotify because of the half-second fade-out and fade-in when you pause and unpause a song. It drives me crazy and as of 2020 there’s no way to turn it off
Yeah I can sympathize with the layer cropping. And I can see how the layer limit is frustrating for a lot of people. Fun fact procreate was the first digital art software I used so when I used another app for the first time and saw that it didn’t crop the image my jaw, dropped. But I still use procreate all the time! Because it was the first digital art software I used the really complicated interfaces are too scary to me and I enjoy the simplicity of procreates! (Oh, a sort of quick thing for the eyedropper is to tap the little square between the size and opacity sliders!)
My procreate is having some lag issues so I thought to switch to clip studio cause I used to use it in desktop but now I’m falling back in love with CSP on my iPad lol, it’s a learning curve but there’s so many more tools on CSP that I forgot I loved to use before getting my iPad
THISSS! Plus procreate feels weirdly floaty. I don't know how to describe it but I can't make genuine finished pieces on the program because it feels to flighty and graphic compared to what I'm used to (started on fire alpaca, moved to medibang paint pro and finally to clip studio paint) I don't know if its because of my own experiences using ONLY digital softwares limited to the computer that makes it so hard to get used to, but even then I feel better using clip on my tablet just the same as I do on my pc. Idk, procreate just isn't for me :(
2:39 - I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s used this method 😂 The layer visibility issue is also not a nit pick, it’s a super strange choice that I have never gotten used to and don’t think we should have to. This should be an option.
Literally I relate SOO well to number six 😭😭😭 Once I had a finished piece that I loved, so I duplicated it (or so I thought) and then I blurred it out so I could make it a background of a social media post, I went back in the gallery to go back to the original and it turned out I NEVER duplicated it at ALL! I literally cried 😭😭😭😡🤬😤😫
For the problem with deleting the selection when it is out of the page,u can make a paspartout(is a nish way to solve it,u can put the rezolution that u want, make contour of the edges and then make the rezolution bigger),But for u again will be the problem with layers
I love to jump between apps myself, to experience new brushes and canvases and the like. I do mainly work in Procreate because I do like the traditional feel of a lot of the standard brushes (and have a variety of packs that equally replicate real brushes and mediums) but I hate just about everything else about Procreate, too. I love the iPad for the functionality and responsiveness but I've always hated the baby's first computer design of Apple products and apps. Give me the NASA control station.
I myself couldn't work in procreate since I'm used to clip studio (and used paint tool sai before). I hate the fact that I couldn't have my functions windows open (like have layers window just floating around or just open all the time) and had to open them every time, I like to have my ui filled with what I need, even if it takes more screen space. Also lack of option to make folders as clipping masks which I can do in csp. And the most annoying thing for me was the fact that if you do flip horizontially/vertically, it doesn't flip your view but the entire thing, and if you tap undo, it flips back instead of, for example, erasing a line you made before flipping. I know I might have just get used to it, but I hated it so much that I just got myself a csp on ipad for convenience. I bought ipad to bring it to school with me and it is not my primary device for drawing, since I prefer working on my pc in clip studio. Maybe I am just picky when it comes to programs, but everyone uses what they like and there is nothing wrong with it!
Alternate title: my skill issue
Omgg hiiiiiiii i love your videos!!!
skill issue :)
@@Popyellow thank you!! ^^
@@Aman_Mondal you can make your own brushes in procreate also buy other people's brushes that can make it easier to draw and whats your liking
its pretty simple and easy to make shape tools just look at a tutorial saying "how to create my own brushes on procreate" and thats it.
also there are sharp tools maybe you're just looking at airbrushes?
I’ve heard of it but procreate is cheaper 😅
BRUUUH FR it threw me off SO BAD. and the % isn't even the same between brushes because their maximum/minimum size values are different and it's SO INFURIATING like CAN'T YOU JUST TELL ME BOTH AT THE SAME TIME??? 😭AND 1% can have MULTIPLE pixel sizes in it so if you don't nail exactly where you had it before it's gonna be sliiightly different RAUGHGHHAAUGHAGRAUGH
i just use ibis paint because i have no money for paid apps💀
@@lunar_proxy exactly, you gotta judge by the little brush stamp preview because on some brushes you can be at 1% size and it will be twice as big than... 1%. Like every other art program I've seen uses pixels, it's what I'm used to and it works, why try to be unique with something that's objectively worse, if you're gonna reinvent the wheel make it better not more annoying
@@noodlepigeon ibis is pretty cracked as a free program
I love procreate but there are reasons why I still finish every piece in photoshop 😭 it's great as a "just pick it up and start drawing" app bc you don't get overwhelmed by all the ui options, but if you're skilled with a program that has those options, you really start missing them
Clip Studio just added a simple mode so I have no reason to use anything else.
Dude, procreate is not simple in the slightest, when I tried it I was so overwhelmed by how much nothing there was, nothing was clearly labelled, which makes it so complicated and messy and confusing
@@pemanilnoob The thing is, it is objectively a "simple" app in comparison to other apps in the same category.
@@pemanilnoobThey meant how the ui is, you can see that there are not much VISIBLE options like in other programs
I always recommend Krita for this because it has a Photoshop-like lay out, but it's really easy to navigate through once you get used to it.
avid procreate user here, the only complaint i've really had about this program is the fact that whenever i resize/move something with the lasso tool, it just makes it blurry and not sharp and i end up having to redraw the lineart over the original because i made a stupid mistake
This is so true. I animate on it and it makes it pixelated 😢
Thank god it doesn’t have the same issue in procreate dreams
i had this issue when i used to use procreate - turns out it was the interpolation mode. try different ones, some will work better for lineart
You should try changing the interpolation setting! It’s most likely on bicubic or bilinear if it’s making things blurry
Change it to nearest neighbor! Not sure if that’s exactly what it’s called but it helps a ton
The stabilization cropping and layer limits are my biggest issues omfg
layer limits shouldn’t be a huge issue unless you’re using an older device, how old is yours
@@Sadakorka its more like i like working on big canvases. I think its a 2020 model but overal i tend to like working on bigger canvases and that eats up my layer limit

I tried Krita first and then procreate was so easy when compared. I love it.
@@TadpoleArtz i've used krita for YEARS and i found procreate annoying... but i've gotten a bit more used to it now, it's nice to doodle in it but for more serious stuff i'd probably use krita again... it's just better

@@amateurbarnabyYou can make your own brushes! Kinda. I always do this when I draw on Ibispaint X, and it’s an add (or sometimes none!) to use all of the brush stuff for… 18 hours I think?
YES. I have such a love/loathe relationship with Procreate.
omg thank you for addressing these issues, i felt insane thinking i was the only procreate disliker. every art program i ever used always had its features (ex: layers, brush lists, brush settings etc) laid out infront of the user but for some reason procreate hides them??? which is fine but having to do all those extra clicks just to increase stabilization feels like a step backwards and needlessly complicated.
like sure procreates layout is nice an minimalistic, but at the cost of being less intutitive
OMg that's my exact issue!! It's too minimalistic for me, I had a phase a while back where it was all I used but going back to it now after a long time with Csp I just can't TvT
I need my tools laid out in front of me so I can remember they're there!!

I’ve been working with Procreate for far too long 😂
I never cared for the cropping - my stuff gets completely pixelated anyway if I turn it only 1 pixel
@@NoirArt.That too!! I basically spend extra time smoothing things out because of how pixelated it becomes after any transformation.
What specific tablet did you get? Trying to decide rn
Huion kamvas pro and CSP has been one of the best purchases ive ever done. CSP is so customizeable and has so many features and functions, i love it
My biggest issue with procreate is that you can't change the folder's opacity and you can't create clipping groups AND you can't create clipping layers for folders. This is a very big issue to me because I use all of these functions all the time in other programs
6:34 I use Krita and it counts layer visibility in the history. Personally I don't have a problem with it, because I can have a lot of layers and not know what I've accidentally made invisible, so it's useful since I can just quickly undo it and get back to drawing!
same, to me is a feature, she is just not using it properly ^^U
Photoshop has always done this too but there is no reason that it shouldn’t be an option in any painting app imo.
1. the intrusive autosave is a dealbreaker for me. i want to decide when to save, i dont want the app to decide that. sometimes i want to experiment around and dont want to save my experimental changes. theres a reason every professional desktop app has a "save as" option.
2. if you open the app in split view it takes away some tools.
3. dont like minimalistic UIs. i want all my tools and options.
especially if you crop around or use to many effect layers, app is prone to crash, so I always have to make a safety copy of my project before doing something that could crash it and ruin my entire project
I mean, I'm happy it autosaves - _but then don't delete the undos with leaving the app!!!_

I totally agree with all of these! ..I have one to add: no separate effect/adjustment layers. Unless I'm mistaken, you need to combine all the layers to then apply them to then mess around with effects to apply to the entire image!! I have to duplicate my artwork and flatten it all just to further adjust.
oh yeah that one pisses me off the most
For me it was the stabilizer that heavily set me off procreate after I bought it so I feel you on the brush settings
I’m relieved that I am not crazy, and that I do not need to be sent to an institution
im sorry no every other app's stabilizer is laggy cheeks
Your reason number 3# is the reason I switched years ago. I love using the lasso and transform tools and blurred pixels don't cut it. ArtStudio Pro forever! XD
ArtStudio Pro is the best app :D really underrated
It's so funny i still like procreate but actually agree with all of the things you said. Very good way to draw attention to very easy to miss issues
Have you tried CSP's Simple Mode when using it on a tablet?
IDK about a 16” ipad tho. At that point, it should be a Mac.
i think you should just submit a letter \ talk with the guys at procreate.
- cloud is also feel weird they didnt fix it. in my opinion its also a bug
- keyboard shortcut, huge for me too, i wish they will work on it as well.
about the cropping, layer limit, resize, i think most of them been solved in procreate dreams, and slowly will be pushed to procreate.

8:40 The shortcut for the eyedropper is the square below the brush size tool. You can use it for that or change it into a quick shortcuts menu. Just saying!

thank you thank you THANK YOU for reading my mind, GOD I tried to get into procreate years ago, but the brushes are weird, it all feels small, I feel like I have to press too damn hard when drawing, even with a sketch brush, its kinda buggy.
I feel like there’s a perfect in-between of the simplicity of procreate and the power of clip studio that has yet to be created.
Great video, I laughed when you showed the fact that it cuts everything off the canvas, because at first I was angry about this too 🙈
There are also a lot of other things that you didn't mention that are really annoying.
4:59 You have diffrent scaling modes and when you have for example: nearest neighbour its gonna turn into pixelated crap
7:00 i have this issue with flipaclip and its genuinely so irritating, im so used to ibispaint x that it just throws me off
I personally really like that layer visibility is in the history because I go back to get colors from old drawings a lot, and it’s just easier to hit the undo button to switch them back on or off to get back to the original state of the drawing.
I think Procreate is for intuitive artists that come from oil or acrylic painting and CSP or PS is for cartoonists, manga artists, animators, illustrators who work in publishing or draw with a lot details.
5:59 The layer visibility thing is also a problem in Ibis Paint x
For me Procreate feels SLOW AF. Moving layers around, creating folders and putting stuff into it takes ages and those animations are way too long😭. Im really used to the quick navigating in CSP lmao. Also you cannot clip anything onto existing folders which annoys me because im using it a lot :(
You are mentioning every single problem i have with this app and i will always finish my drawings in CSP.
It's sad, but I refuses to pay a sub for a program I have on my PC
csp has still has vector layers right?
CSP does have vector layers. Make sure your layer UI is stretched out enough to show more options since when its at its minimum, it only shows new layer, folder, merge etc. Its there, its just hidden away at first
@@sem_re yes
I love vectors
I am not a digital artist yet (ordered my tab, it's gonna take 3-4 days to come) but I keep hearing about vector layers in some csp tutorials, and as a physic student, I am confused, is it the same vector? If it is then how can it be used?
honestly yeah, i used csp and procreate for years and csp is honestly just so more comfortable to use once you get used to it.. everything from brushes to cropping to layer limits is so much better. if csp wasn’t subscription based for ipad i would’ve fully switched ages ago
for me i love love love procreate for sketching, especially with its multi layer liquify tool, but then i prefer finishing pieces in clip studio
UGHH this is so good! I’ve never really liked procreate, it’s just not for me for these reasons and more, but procreate artists are wonderful!!
My biggest problem with Procreate is that it's not available for Android. I'm not gonna enter in the Apple cult, thanks.
I have always used android or Microsoft systems and ended up with an iPhone for a while. It was such a pain to use. The camera was great. But I never fully figured out how to use the phone beyond operating the web browser. Everything else sucked.
Skill issue
8:38 I just press that box in the middle between opacity and line weight. I think it opens the dropper?
I feel like nobody talks about this aspect of digital art.
imma stick with ms paint
Wow ,as a person who use ibispaint first in my life and have tried procreate and clip studio, I really don't like procreate just because its UI. I don't even know "what the heck is that and what is this!!?" It's hard to know how to use and they have to click a lot to use its function! I really like ibispaint more even it is also turn my picture to pixels and cut it off TT. And now I use clip studio which the UI is too many for Ipad but it makes work good.
yall would die with ibis lmao
they wouldn't survive 😭
For color pick, you can use the square button between the size and opacity sliders as a hot key to activate the color picker.
8:52 if you hold the square with your left hand it actually does tgat and its really fast and makes up for not having a keyboard
Recently had to remote wipe my iPad for security reasons and in doing so lost four years of art on procreate… since I already have to redownload everything and I have a clean slate I’ve decided to look into alternatives. This video was super informative thanks!
Are there any good alternatives to use with an iPad then?
clip studio paint
8:59
There is another wa6 to get the colour. You know that little square in between the thickness and opacity sliders? If you press that and then the colour you want, it works. Personally I find it easier to just hold it like you are in the video.
i had used photoshop, paint tool sai and CSP before procreate and honestly you couldnt have said it better 💯
if you're new to digital art or havent used any other drawing software, procreate will seem good enough, but if u've tried others its obvious that procreate is lacking alot
Photoshop actually records the layer visability as well (5:42), thought I d mention it since if ur watching this vid ur porbably trying to decide what art program ud want to use ^^
tbh this is just a big list for procreate creators to fix with time, im sure that eventually these issues will be fixed, like, not liking the minimal UI? make an option to personalize the workspace (like photoshop or unity do), cludsafe? add an option to be able to link procreate to icloud, stuff like that, all of isues i have with this program could easily be fixed (not the isuess related to performance like layer cap and that stuff but personaly it dosent bother me)
I’ve been using procreate since 2020 and the longer you use it the more you learn but also they’ve added things like reference, stabilizer etc
Could you explain to me what is the point of using so many, almost 100 layers?
8:44 I can see what’s bugging you, but below the brush resize slider there’s a little box- if you click on that it brings up the little magnifier to select a new colour. Just saying because it seemed to be annoying that you hand to use the hand holding your pencil- hope this helped! :)
You can lower the activation time of the tap and hold for the color picker btw. :3
Oh, didn't know that! Thank you sm~
That being said, as an artist with a not very complicated style, there were a few things that irked me:
-Layer limit. My iPad is old but not exactly ancient and I like having as much room as I need in a canvas, so I usually end up having not a lot of layer wiggle room. I have progressively remedied this by not making as many layers and drawing certain things on the same layer to save space (and I’m too paranoid to merge layers until I’m done, so)
-This program devours my iPad’s battery.
“This method to draw this sucks and I know it sucks but that’s how I’m used to it” haha
I haven’t really run into certain peeves other artists might’ve had since again, my style is relatively simple with minimal lighting and shading, so my outlook on Procreate is more neutral.
Ok but honestly no matter what app you use, YOUR ART IS AMAZING!!!!
Idk, procreate just isn't for me :(
2:39 - I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s used this method 😂
The layer visibility issue is also not a nit pick, it’s a super strange choice that I have never gotten used to and don’t think we should have to.
