Your childhood story with your father hits me hard, man. Once I decided to pursue my career as a concept artist, I was creating art just for the sake of getting a job and getting better. Drawing, painting, and learning subject matter that I hated with the thought of being good at everything, which is a waste of time because it will take my entire life. I almost forgot why I draw in the first place, which is that it gives me joy. thank you so much for the video!
Thanks for sharing this. I wish more people would talk about this side of being a professional artist. It is great to have a job drawing and painting to create games, but in my opinion it is also incredibly important(to me at least) to maintain my identity as an artist. If you focus on the latter, the studios which truly value your artistic identity will hire for that specifically. Then you are in the "dream job" scenario :D
Im not huge into commenting in general, but I just wanted to say it’s much appreciated to see someone just be genuinely talking, not a crazy cut every 10 seconds, your painting is absolutely amazing and just wanted to take the time to say thank you for the genuine flow of creativity and speaking, very real
Being in the family room thanks to your wife (and IPad). That’s the summit of complicity, but sharing that on YT is so humble and loving people since you make us understand your way of preform your art. I read all the comments as well and fell good reading about emotions I am not the only one to have. 77 years, digital pleasure artist, France.
Those last months, I've watched a bunch of videos on I.A tools. At the end, il was just depressing. I myself struggle for years to gain some abilities in digital art (having not even 1% of yours). Watching this video was a pure joy. There's nothing like a real crafter. And paradoxically, people like you are more precious than ever.
Thanks for your very kind words :) You are not alone in feeling that way. I am confident that AI will never replace the need for real human artists. Among other things, AI image makers simply do not possess the passion, interest and dedication of artists. I do not know all the nuances surrounding the subject, so I am hesitant to make statements without having a more full understanding, but maybe I will share my broad thoughts in a video sometime. All I know for sure is no matter how far it advances, it can never take away your own passion and ideas and personal expression. It can only try to replicate a cold imitation of what humans have already created.
New sub here. The fact you are humble, don't feel the need to curse, acknowledge you're still learning as you share what you know and are transparent is beyond refreshing in today's world. Looking forward to checking out more of your content!
I was a lot into drawing & painting in the past, but I completely stopped despite having a decent level, because I felt in the daily job routine. I enjoyed this video and what you says resonates with me. You made me want to draw again. Thank you very much to light up this dormant fire ;) I will grab a pen and draw again!
So much talent hoooly. It amazes me how artists go from rough sketches with squiggly lines everywhere to the final image looking this amazing. Super cool.
thank you. my dad taught me to draw too, definitely some of my fondest memories. Really enjoyed the talk about the anxious limbo of "creating what you feel like you have to" vs "creating what you love". cheers
This is dope! I've been digital painting with Procreate for about 4 years now and I'm always learning from other artists' processes. It's cool to see how different everyone approaches the medium. Love this style and also love the vibes of your office
Thank you. This video hit home. It reminded me of my childhood. I would watch my dad draw palm trees. I had put off digitally painting for many reasons. However, you inspired me to get back into it, for the joy of painting. Again thank you and keep up the great work.
Just when you think your art sucks and nobody cares comes along your thoughts at a well needed time during my art journey. Even though I got a art degree in 90s I haven’t done much with it until as of late. Really appreciate your thoughts starting at 4:10🎉
I only recently started actually drawing what I feel like drawing again and it really has brought the joy back into my work. I actually started enjoying the painting process more, and got better at picking colours- my lines and sketches make me happier and I think about them a lot when not even working on them- like I actually care and love my work again, it's not just about money or doing something "cool" anymore. The Elden Ring thing, I was thinking about Elden Ring during the times where you focused on the towers! You really nailed the "grandiose pillar in the distance" feeling.
I am inspired. Thank you. Looking forward to your edge video. Please in addition to why and when share the practical aspects of how (brushes and tools you use) to achieve the lost and found and transition from one type of edge to another. It was an absolute pleasure to watch this video.
Dude you're so chill and relatable, really felt myself paying deep attention to what you say and smiling every now and then at the process of your painting slowly revealing itself. Going through a burn out, thinking that i'm loosing the love I once had for the simple pleasure of drawing... this video really hits. Please keep posting, your art makes me feel things, you're awesome.
This means so much to me, and is exactly why I am doing this. I also get burned out and honestly this business can be very discouraging, but the fulfilment and joy of breaking through makes it all worth it. I just want to encourage as many people as I can. Thanks so much for this.
Hey Grady - thank you so much for the vid. I loved seeing the evolution of your doodling, turned sketch, turned painting, and I particularly liked the personality and insight that you were able to provide with your narration - it was great. It's inspiring to see how your thought-process evolves as you do this piece, and the vastly different look / feel that you were able to achieve as you experimented with Procreate. Very cool to see you try something, evaluate it, scrap it or keep it, and then move onto some other aspect of the work. Just slowing it down and watching the sketch evolve was awesome. Please continue to post - I'm subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your work. Wishing you all the best, Man!
as someone who started with procreate because I felt art supplies were too overwhelming or too expensive to get into, seriously try it out. once a month, buy a different pen, or different paint, different paper, just different tools. start small and try it out. also I always felt lack of confident with my drawings but practicing with simple ball pen and paper for a month really changed that. procreate is an amazing tool that can elevate your artwork but now i agree with a lot of artists. it shouldn't be your main/sole tool for art. once you have more experience with the real tools, then you can really understand the different tools in procreate.
Man, I am a huge fan of your work, and you are an inspiration for me. This video created a deeper relation between us, because I identify myself in your speech about your father drawing and inspiring you. I also started to draw because of my father, and unfortunately, he didn't see me working in the industry. You brought this connection to me again, and I would like to say thank you. Keep doing your amazing art and sharing your video and thoughts with us.
I truly love the way you look at things, your paintings and focus, im still fighting to become a concept artist but thanks to you i feel like i already am one, you lighted up my "flame" again to pursue a job and hopefully one day become an art director, so thank you so much man! please keep it up!
I used to try and draw cool stylized portraits because that’s what I liked to see and that’s what I saw others spending money on and buying. So I tried and tried and although sometimes I liked what I drew…it just didn’t feel like me. As I got older I stopped drawing because it felt useless. I felt like I’d never actually been any good at art at all. I just recently saw a UA-camr paint a pretty landscape on procreate and I decided to try my hand at it on a whim. Turns out…I feel more comfortable and natural painting things like that. I think I’ve actually discovered the type of art I’m good at. Procreate can be a pain to figure out but once you get a hang of it, it’s pretty fun
Just clicked on your video randomly and ended up watching the whole thing. I really liked your painting and loved how you explained your thought process for what you were doing. The comment you made about your dad and watching him draw really struck a cord. I have a four year old son and he loves to draw but I think he likes watching me do it even moreso. When you mentioned that it really brought to light the influence we can have on our kids and I have to admit I got a little emotional! I see an IPAD in our future.. Keep up the great work.
Your advice during the sketching portion is so VITAL! It is priority to work on what you love first. That way choosing your project and getting better becomes way easier. I made the mistake of trying to perfect EVERY style at the beginning but spent too much time on it. Now the flow is better that i focus on my own style, it also attracts people to your style. Narrowing your target audience, if any. 😁
Glad I stumbled across this, awesome stuff! I learned to draw from watching my mom draw and that part got me. I wish I had the painting aspect down the way you do. I have steered away from digital and now I'm trying to crash course my way through with everything I missed
You might try tinkering with the marking menus. I have it set for 3-finger slide-down and six custom quick menus show up. I have multiple quick menus set up for the various types of drawing or painting I do.
Yo Grady, I appreciate you making such in depth process videos. Its been tricky discovering this sort of this for me. Extremely inspiring stuff. I'm very interested in learning techniques with procreate especially in order to improve the speed of the process but dont want to rush, its all a balance but yeah please continue to do these well done videos man! That part about watching your dad draw reminded me of watching my grandpa draw a pond with a small boat and dock scene when i was like 5 years old before he passed, changed my life for sure. Hope to see more procreate processes and learn how you personally might use layers and work on shading/ light sources. Also how you choose where to place light sources. Thank you again for the legendary vids!
Man your art is super comforting. I am a fan of darkish fantasy but not too high fantasy. I love your castles too! Procreate is cool. I bought an ipad thinking I would see more of my family because I can leave home and still work on my projects. I was right! I even have some family dog portraits completely in procreate :D But yeah I discovered your channel like a week ago and I am going through it and loving it! Thanks for sharing yourself like this. Your passion is palpable!
I have been using Procreate for a few years, in a fairly mediocre way, I am not good at all, but overall these videos inspire me, your art is beautiful and that pace of work that can be seen, even though the video is accelerated, is beautiful, I love it the dynamic way in which you have created such a fantastic scenario, I wish I could have that ability. So thanks, great video. Cheers.
i really envy people that can do digital art. I've been trying to get into it but it's been a struggle. Been drawing on nothing but paper for 35 years, it's really hard to get comfortable sliding around on a screen. Then there's the endless reworkability that digital allows and you always think it could be better and get hung up on something for too long.
Great video! UA-cam’s recommended videos sent me here. I enjoyed watching your painting come together. I enjoyed hearing you reflect on your artwork too. I just subscribed! I would enjoy more videos showing the process of your artwork. Especially interested in techniques or approaches you recommend. I also enjoy hearing artists discuss the memories, emotions, or thoughts they recognize in their work. I appreciated what you had to share about your dad and drawing. I think it’s a good recommendation that holds true to many aspects of life.😊
I switched over to procreate about a year ago from photoshop - you can get a little wireless keyboard and use a lot of the same hot keys to speed up the workflow! Huge game changer when I figured that out lol
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm not sure if you read these comments, but these videos have helped me improve so much as an artist. I truly appreciate your videos!
Great video! The transition from a line drawing to painting was really insightful. That's something I always find myself getting confused with, and I feel like turning the line layer to multiply over the painting might help me be more efficient with it.
Wonderful work and including scenery from the Isle of Skye was fabulous, I have been there. I have procreate and am struggling with it as I am not a trained artist, just an old hobbyist. Your dad sounds like a great guy. Hopefully this will inspire me. Cheers Charlie
Many thanks, Charlie! I have just gotten back from Scotland myself, and seeing Skye before my eyes was quite an overwhelming experience. I encourage you to keep practicing! It is a wonderful hobby to have, no matter what tools you choose.
The first time we went up to Skye I thought, this is probably what the moon is like. On our way back down towards Oban we stopped by a Loch with a spectacular view. I was compelled to take a photo and when we returned to Toronto, I tried my hand at doing an oil painting. I surprised myself👍
Hey man, just wanted to say I really enjoyed you’re style. Also I’ve been using Procreate for over a decade at this point and I’ve never thought about expanding the canvas to ad in reference images while working. Absolute genius. Keep doing what you love ✌️
Great illustration! I started to use Procreate at the end of 2021, after a whole life without drawing anything at all. I feel in love with the process and want to become better. (But I do it as an amateur, no ambition: I don't have so much time.) I loved how you painted the sketch, adding volumes and shades right away, filling in the sketch, making it more real before all the lines were there. That makes me think I need to start sketching more and more: you inspired me. Somehow I feel bored with "only lines" (silly rookie thought, sorry) and your way makes me think I can finally start sketching as I should. Subscribed instantly! Thanks.
Thanks! I am glad you feel some motivation to continue :D Keep in mind that drawing fundamentals are necessary to take this approach. It can be tempting to advance to form rendering and values to get past the "ugly" stage but for that to work the drawing must already have a solid foundation. Otherwise you may end up just polishing a... well you know :)
Heading back to Skye in a few weeks so lovely to see home in your references. Love that takeaway from Father, and great to see your channel grow! Best from Scotland, Jonathan
@@gradyfrederickart Glad to hear it! I use it over four years, but mostly for sketching. For final painting I like PC with better performance and working on Cintiq is more comfy. But the iPad is great for sketching and learning. Keep it up, always loving your works and videos!
This was both soothing and informative. I want to get into visdev and it's intimidating trying to make things that you think will get you noticed. After watching this I feel like I regained some focus. Also Im going to try the method of making more thought out sketches for a larger composition! Thank you
Your work is incredible. I’m sure some people think that digital art is almost performed by the computer and isn’t true art. It’s amazing to see just how much work goes into your creations. In fact I would say you worked harder with this than many traditional artist do. Now days, I think the lines between digital art and traditional painting are blurred. Many traditional artist use iPads etc. to assist their work.
Thankyou very much. Yes, it can't be frustrating to hear things like "digital art isn't real art" as it is indeed just another tool. To me it's like saying writing a book on a keyboard is "real writing" because you didn't use a pen or pencil. The art happens in our mind and we use tools to express it.
Great video, and artwork. Subbing to see you make more pieces in procreate, or maybe even clip studio on the iPad, (I’ve heard the brushes and overall UI closer resemble photoshop) because I am more interested in those apps than PS. Either way though definitely going to check out more of your videos, and look forward to your artwork going forward.
This is beyond cool brother, i loved the whole process and mainly how you have done your color values.. absolutely loved the part where you were loosely sketching like with a marker brush with loose textures. Please let me know which brush did you use for the sketch.. would really help brother.
dude your work is amazing. as someone who is about to start university and a games art course work work really inspires me. i want to major in concept environment design and watching your work flow and u talking about the methods u use is always so cool. please keep it up. your work is amazing and i hope i can get to your level one day
vey inspiring thought, I felt like kidn in between drawing what I love and what popular and you said things that once again convince me that doing what we love more beneficial in long run, thankyou somuch sir!
Have you considered getting a bluetooth keyboard, so that you can still use shortcuts? They even have artist specefic keyboards, which I use, which are very handy.
Great work on shapes and colors. Your style is very elegant. I really love the mood you place in it. From a story telling perspective, I did not really get what that medieval house was doing alone with the towers and walls in the background, but it doesn't matter. I agree: paint what you love and it will show. Here, it shows. Surely you got my sub.
Thank you so much for your vid!! And thank you for your story about how you got into art, it helped put into perspective again why I wanna do art in the first place:) love your vid and looking forward to future updates!❤❤❤
Brother… i have practically zero experience with painting/ digital art. I am a leatherworker - and only recently picked up procreate for designing logos and stuff for the website. I figured id poke around UA-cam and see if i could star learning to paint.. and now here i am crying… Your creative process and story telling in this video was so unbelievably inspiring. The authenticity that comes through in your art and your voice is something that the world sorely needs. Thank you.
Your childhood story with your father hits me hard, man. Once I decided to pursue my career as a concept artist, I was creating art just for the sake of getting a job and getting better.
Thanks for sharing this. I am overwhelmed by the amount of interaction and it makes me feel so good to see such enthusiasm for art in the community :)
Bro you are way more relatable than most of these art tubers! Thank you for sharing your story, your art is so dope!
Thank you so much 😀
Those last months, I've watched a bunch of videos on I.A tools.

So much talent hoooly. It amazes me how artists go from rough sketches with squiggly lines everywhere to the final image looking this amazing. Super cool.
I absolutely love procreate. It’s so nice just to sit in bed or on the floor and sketch and paint. Beautiful painting. I can’t wait to see more.
I'm starting to really love it too! Thanks :)
thank you. my dad taught me to draw too, definitely some of my fondest memories. Really enjoyed the talk about the anxious limbo of "creating what you feel like you have to" vs "creating what you love". cheers
Thanks! It is a wonderful thing to share with a parent
We need more, it's amazing ! You really explain what you do and how you feel, I love it.
I'm working on it! Thanks for you comment :)

Thankyou :D That means alot
Just when you think your art sucks and nobody cares comes along your thoughts at a well needed time during my art journey. Even though I got a art degree in 90s I haven’t done much with it until as of late. Really appreciate your thoughts starting at 4:10🎉
I'm so glad. The pursuit of art can be quite discouraging, but if you are persistent it is tremendously fulfilling :) Thanks for this.

There’s magic in your process and discussion. Thank you for sharing and inspiring!
Thankyou!
A bad artist blames his tools. A poor artist blames Adobe for switching to a subscription model. 😂
😂😂😂
That’s funny
Photoshop is $10 a month - $120 a year - shrug...
@@jessemorgan2009and procreate is still much better and easier to use. F*ck photoshop and anyone else who overcharges people like that
Because subscription models are parasitic
I am inspired. Thank you. Looking forward to your edge video. Please in addition to why and when share the practical aspects of how (brushes and tools you use) to achieve the lost and found and transition from one type of edge to another. It was an absolute pleasure to watch this video.
Big Heart for drawing, painting, & expressing what you really love to do. Happy New Year!
Dude you're so chill and relatable, really felt myself paying deep attention to what you say and smiling every now and then at the process of your painting slowly revealing itself. Going through a burn out, thinking that i'm loosing the love I once had for the simple pleasure of drawing... this video really hits. The story of you and your dad hurts me inside. I miss my dad, he loved art. When I lost him part of me stopped loving art. Reminds me of him so much
That painting looks amazing. Can you do a follow up video talking about the procreate brushes you used for it?
Okay, that's a good idea! Thanks for the comment :)
I cant thank you enough how your word and your video made me feel. Thank you for inspiring me, wish you all the best!
I can't begin to imagine why all this is necessary but I'm an old-timer cartoonist. Your work is exceptional and Iam very much in awe.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean by the first sentence haha but thankyou for you kind words :)
please create more artworks with procreate as sole driver, this can really help to us starting artists with limited tools. Thank you sir!
Okay, good to know! I'll make sure to do some more :D
Funny to think that in todays day and age “limited tools” is an iPad with procreate. A super powerful set of tools.
as someone who started with procreate because I felt art supplies were too overwhelming or too expensive to get into,
seriously try it out. once a month, buy a different pen, or different paint, different paper, just different tools. start small and try it out.
also I always felt lack of confident with my drawings but practicing with simple ball pen and paper for a month really changed that.
procreate is an amazing tool that can elevate your artwork but now i agree with a lot of artists. it shouldn't be your main/sole tool for art.
once you have more experience with the real tools, then you can really understand the different tools in procreate.
Man, I am a huge fan of your work, and you are an inspiration for me. Parabéns pelo incrível trabalho... Espetacular capricho. Excelente.
I really enjoy the way you speak about art and authenticity. Thank you

Thanks so much for this :) Keep going and don't lose your love of art through the weeds of the industry 💚
Great information, amazing process and smooth brushwork! I love your stuff and you are a lifesaver! Keep it up!!! I'm learning so much!
Thankyou man, I'm glad you like it :)

Thanks so much Jonathan, it really means alot.
This was great, feel like I got a therapy session and some inspiration in one!
haha thankyou!
I can't draw or paint... but it looks like the ultimate freedom being able to give life to your imagination in such a way

I think it’s a good recommendation that holds true to many aspects of life.😊
Thanks for your feedback :) I appreciate it, keep checking in for new videos :)
I switched over to procreate about a year ago from photoshop - you can get a little wireless keyboard and use a lot of the same hot keys to speed up the workflow! Huge game changer when I figured that out lol
Oh cool! I do enjoy the lightweight aspect of having no peripherals, but I will definitely look into it and try it out :) Thanks for this!
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm not sure if you read these comments, but these videos have helped me improve so much as an artist. I truly appreciate your videos!
Thanks for this :D I'm happy to hear my videos have helped
Great video! The transition from a line drawing to painting was really insightful. That's something I always find myself getting confused with, and I feel like turning the line layer to multiply over the painting might help me be more efficient with it.
I really enjoy watching this. You are very talented. Thank you for sharing
I have Procreate, fantastic program. I was an airbrush illustrator so using this program is really interesting. Great work👍
I love the message of doing what you love! Amazing video , wishing you all the best in everything you do.
Thank you so much for this, wishing you the best as well!
Wonderful work and including scenery from the Isle of Skye was fabulous, I have been there.
I have procreate and am struggling with it as I am not a trained artist, just an old hobbyist.
Your dad sounds like a great guy.
Hopefully this will inspire me.
Cheers
Charlie
(But I do it as an amateur, no ambition: I don't have so much time.)
I loved how you painted the sketch, adding volumes and shades right away, filling in the sketch, making it more real before all the lines were there.
Thanks for watching! I'll be seeing Skye in person this year for the first time 💚
You're genius, thanks so much, it's fantastic!! Really great work with sketching on iPad!
Thankyou :) The ipad is certainly new for me, but I'm getting better(slowly)
@@gradyfrederickart Glad to hear it! I use it over four years, but mostly for sketching. For final painting I like PC with better performance and working on Cintiq is more comfy. But the iPad is great for sketching and learning. Keep it up, always loving your works and videos!
I appreciate you sharing valuable insight in your creative process. It resonates with me very well. Thank you.
Thanks!
yeah nostalgia shines in your work like a fuggin truck dude
great job! such beautiful work... Loved it. thanks for sharing sir!
This was both soothing and informative. I want to get into visdev and it's intimidating trying to make things that you think will get you noticed. After watching this I feel like I regained some focus. Also Im going to try the method of making more thought out sketches for a larger composition! Thank you
Thankyou! I wish you the best in your visdev pursuits! Let your passions drive your work, and be inspired by your favorite works and artists :D
Dude! You are awesome! I love that style. Would love to see more in the future 😊
Amazing work, Grady! Thank you for sharing this video : )
Great video. I loved the background story. Thanks for the work you do.
Thanks so much! Thanks for being a subscriber, too 🍻
It’s an awesome painting, I just love the mood in it , so dreamy
Thanks so much!
Getting an Ipad for drawing as a gift is some wholesome
Your work is amazing, especially for atmosphere and depth. Truly inspiring!
Thank you so much 😀
Your work is incredible.
I love your office space so much
Incredible work Grady, and I really appreciate your insightful words!
I appreciate that! It means alot.
This is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your process. Honestly inspiring me to get back into drawing again.
Thanks so much :D Glad to hear it
Stunning painting and a really enjoyable video. Thanks for this
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the sub! I might try some other apps on the Ipad 😊
Спасибо за видео! Вы замечательный художник, это работа восхитительна! Вашу речь было интересно слушать, Вы вдохновили продолжить рисовать 🤩🙌
Thanks so much! I am glad you feel inspired :D
This is beyond cool brother, i loved the whole process and mainly how you have done your color values.. absolutely loved the part where you were loosely sketching like with a marker brush with loose textures. Please let me know which brush did you use for the sketch.. would really help brother.
Love it. SImply love your art man. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much :)
Dragon ball style is a favourite now omg you killed it. Well done. Just when I thought I couldn’t love Spyro any more ;)
This was a really helpful share. Thanks. You gave us a lot here.
Thank you for the video. Love the narration of your steps.
Thanks :)
I really enjoyed this demonstration.

DUDE!! I am humbled to see my Witcher 3 map on your wall. You're amazing :) Keep it up!!!
Thanks you for sharing your work with us ! Please keep going on, this is very helpful 🙏
I will! Thanks for the kind words
Hi Grady I wonder what you think of Adobe Fresco? I use that on my iPad atm and love the live brushes. I'm hesitant to make the switch to procreate.
I love your style. It’s beautiful.
such a joy to watch! really happy to see that you're posting more frequently at the moment!
Thankyou! Yeah I'm trying to get faster at producing these haha :D
I love Procreate and I love this piece! Great work, sir.
vey inspiring thought, I felt like kidn in between drawing what I love and what popular and you said things that once again convince me that doing what we love more beneficial in long run, thankyou somuch sir!
Yes indeed! Thanks for watching :D
Have you considered getting a bluetooth keyboard, so that you can still use shortcuts?
They even have artist specefic keyboards, which I use, which are very handy.
This was really cool watching you make this, subscribed.
beautiful work man, great words to go along as well
Great work on shapes and colors. Your style is very elegant. I really love the mood you place in it. From a story telling perspective, I did not really get what that medieval house was doing alone with the towers and walls in the background, but it doesn't matter. I agree: paint what you love and it will show. Here, it shows. Surely you got my sub.
Thankyou! Maybe they are farms providing food for the oppressive kings in the towers? :P
Thank you so much for your vid!! And thank you for your story about how you got into art, it helped put into perspective again why I wanna do art in the first place:) love your vid and looking forward to future updates!❤❤❤
Thanks! I'm so glad what I said resonated :)
Love your art so much, thank you for sharing these videos!
Thank you!
