Amy..you continue to inspire me with your wonderful orchid videos as I'm sure many other orchid enthusiasts will agree. One of my favorite lessons from you is on growing cattleyas in New Zeeland spaghnum moss! Thank you for sharing and may you be truly blessed!
I love it 😍 your beautiful cattleya my my the beautiful roots really you are very dedicare to the orchids!congrats ! I learn so much about the carefully my orchids, thanks you for sharing everything about.
Thanks so much, Jack! I looked up Vanda Rothchildiana and my orchid looks almost exactly like it...the "new name" is Vanda Sansei Blue. (Why do they rename orchids?) The Sansei Blue has a slightly larger, more rounded bloom, that's the only difference. Thanks for your input on the ID. Have a great day and happy growing!
Orchid Whisperer The guys that cut them up and study there different parts. Do you look at google+. I will put a picture of mine on my page. I will do it tomorrow morning. Might be the same..
I keep looking at pictures of both V. Rothchildiana and Sansei Blue...I'm almost certain they are the same plant. Some are in different stages of their bloom cycle and that's probably the reason they look slightly different. Thanks again for helping me ID. I will refer to both names, I believe they are both correct. Have a great day!
Great information, just thought I'd add that it's a good idea to check the specific requirements on Cattleya Orchids so many hybrids, Where I live it gets quite cold in winter so I specifically went after colder growing Cattleya they often have laelia in the process somewhere, they can handle the colder temps and like them actually. So yeah just adding a little tip
Hi Stacey and that's a great tip! It's really smart to grow hybrids that fit your environment, so you made a great choice! Thanks for sharing and have a great day! Happy growing!
Thanks so much Tracy! I love this Catt...she is my sunshine! You will be pleased with the results when you use Epsom salts. I use just a small amount, but it does make a difference! Thanks again for watching and have a great day! :)
Hello, again, dear friend. I'm headed to purchase a few more baby cattleyas later today. You have inspired me to add a few more to this year's classroom garden. Bless you and thank you so much. Date: 11/10/2017
I can't wait to see how many of your students become botanists, my friend! :) You're giving them insight and access to caring for the most interesting plants in the world...wow. I bet they never want to leave your classroom. lol! Thanks always for watching and for your updates on your garden...blessings to you! Amy
Dear Amy, thank you so much. I went right out to LOWE'S and purchased a baby cattleya in bloom!! Finding this baby plant in bloom was a first for me. It is fragrant, so I'm sure my students will flip over it. Also, I ordered New Zealand moss and cannot wait to get it. I just want to reassure you that your videos are incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!
Hello my friend! :) I'm so glad you found a baby Cattleya! Yes, your students are going to flip over it! Nothing smells as beautiful as Catt blooms. :) Thank you so much for your kindness. :) I always look forward to hearing from you and getting updates on the plants you're adding to your classroom! Many blessings to you! Amy
Hi Daisy! The temps for my Cattleya are my regular room temps. It varies throughout the year. Right now, I keep it at a very even temp of 68 to 70 degrees so that the buds won't blast. Happy growing!
@@OrchidWhisperer Hello!! And thanks very much for your kind reply, and for letting me know how much water to put in! I will follow that recommendation! Thanks very much again!! Happy growing too!
Hello! I wanted to ask how to induce cattleya into blooming. All of them are healthy (leaves and roots). I keep them outside, night time temperature about 12 celsius. Not sure if this is too cold for them or maybe it's a little too early for them to bloom.
Hi Victoria! My Cattleya is just now getting ready to bloom. I grow mine indoors all year long, where my night temps are about 20 celcius. They are intermediate to warm growers, so you might want to put them inside at night until the temps go up. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Good morning amy, what a great cattleya and so happy never lost a leaf wow thats amazing. I hope she blooms all out. Ps do you try to get those new roots into the media ? I try to place my orchids in the pot so new roots grow into the media. But yours is sooo big you can't place it so all canes are pointing the right way. Why I ask is because i know the plant often needs the new roots. And if they all go arial its harder to hydrate it. Do you mist those roots so it gets enough moister or is it so big it doesn't matter? I do hope one day my orchids grow as big and happy as yours. Kind regards rose 🌹
Hi Rose! Always great to hear from you my friend! These aerial roots are also Einstein-like, they go everywhere! :) I don't mist them often, just to keep them clean from time to time. (Maybe a few times a month.) The air roots on Catts are different than air roots on phals...they are easy to care for. There's such an extensive root system on this Catt and I don't have any problems keeping it hydrated. If I were growing it in a different media, it might be a different story. But these stay hydrated, as a matter of fact, they're branching out and growing again! haha The only thing I have to be careful with is not to damage the roots when I move the plant. So I keep it as stationary as I can. You're becoming a really good orchid grower, Rose, so your plants will do well. In 10 years you'll be telling stories about them, I'm sure. Have a wonderful day and may the force be with you! :) Blessings from me to you!
My large cattleya has black tips on my 3 new sheaths. Do you think this could be? I did fertilize it about two weeks ago with a very small dose ... no black tips on the roots?
on the sheaths! No black spots anywhere else on the Cattleya. The Sheath looks like it's growing properly? I'm puzzled because I fertilized with less that 200 TDS and the roots aren't turning black.
I wouldn't be too concerned, it will probably be fine. (You might want to double check to see that there are no pests on it...that's a thought.) Keep me posted, this is a mystery! Have a great day, Bobette! :)
Hi Valentina! I use the copper fungicide on my Cattleya and on my Phals...just the leaves, not the roots. Copper is good for Catts and Phals, but it's not good for Dendrobiums. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
What kind of fertilizer do you use for that beautiful plant? I just bought some at Kroger's Miracle-Gro I think it was. I'm not sure if that's the right one. Have a beautiful day and be blessed in Jesus love
Hi and thanks so much for your sweet comment! I don't have any Cattleyas in water culture right now, only in moss. I might give it a try sometime, though! ! :) Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Thanks for your informative video. I just purchased a catteleya without medium. I pot it in lava and river rock but after watching your video I've been thinking that I need to get sphagnum moss. It has roots but they look dark. One of the leaves is turning dark as well and I was trying to decide whether I should cut it off or wait for it to fall off. How can I save this baby?
Hi Sheryl! I've not grown a Cattleya in lava and river rock, but it sounds like your plant is drying out. I would definitely give orchid grade premium sphagnum moss (or New Zealand moss) a try...it has worked for me and my Cattleya for 11 years! I wouldn't cut the leaf off, I would wait to see if it will fall off. I wish you the best with your Cattleya and keep me posted! Happy growing!
Hi Jane! I buy it at Lowe's or Home Depot. This time of the year, you might have to order it from Amazon. It's the Better Gro brand. Have a great day! :)
Another great tuturial! You should change your screen name to "The Orchid Teacher!" 😊 I've never seen aerial roots that long! Is that typical of cattleyas of that age? What do you use to clean your orchid leaves? Lemon juice? Do you clean the underside of the leaves? Or just the tops?
Hi Caroline and thanks so much for your sweet comment! :) This cattleya has the longest roots I've ever seen! It's part of its personality! lol! They have grown long like that for about 3 years now. I'll be doing a video about how I clean my leaves, that's my next tutorial! :) I'll show you exactly how you do it, and I'll answer the questions you just asked. Thanks always for watching and for your kindness...happy growing my friend! :)
Caroline Clean the foliage so it can breath. Plants outdoors gets washed off by rain and/or hose watering. Dust and stuff collect on foliage inside, clogging stomata and making it harder for plant to breath/thrive. Big turgid leaves like orchids, rubber plants, pothos and such, I wipe them down with milk. It cleans, is actually a little foliar feeding and the foliage will shine/plant will love you. Mom used a cottonball, as did I up until about 5 years ago. Now I keep a piece of microfiber just for this. Soft, absorbent and reusable. A little milk in a saucer and rinse/squeeze out piece in there. You'll probably go 2-3 months depending on your environment.... or whenever you notice theyre dull and dusty.
Hi .. i hv another Q on Cattleya which i bought also abt 2mths ago .. it had 6 canes n 1 wth 3 blooms .. thats what attracted me .. a very2 new beginner wth orchids .. Only weeks later that i noticed every cane had bloomed b4 .. Will it hv a 2nd bloom?Should i cut them? New roots are in-sight
Hi and thank you for your question! The canes that have bloomed before won't re-bloom. You can cut the old spikes after they've turned brown all the way down to bottom of the spike. The new canes will develop flower sheaths and bloom sometime in the spring. New roots are a great sign! :) Have a great day and happy growing!

In which temperature you keep the cattleyas.... and the phal (night and day) Thank you Have a great day!
