    I think this video is the best presentation of how to re-potting cattleyas. It is simple, easy, clean cut, realistic, effective but very useful. Thank you, I learn a lot from this. Please do more care tips for orchid.

    Thanks on the tip for cutting the rotted roots away. I was very reluctant.

    • @PlantVisionz
      @PlantVisionz  7 років тому +1

      taariqq if u don't cut the rotten roots...insects such as wood louse n ants might make a home in your orchid pot which creates mayhem. Poor root growth means poor orchid growth means no flowers. think of this as cutting split ends on your head. ..lol

    • @taariqq
      @taariqq 7 років тому

      :D ...
      btw on one of my big Cattleyas we (me and the nursery guys, since it was my first time repotting) did not cut most of the old roots. AND ... no wonder the ants are constantly in and out of it! :(
      Now what? Repot?

    • @PlantVisionz
      @PlantVisionz  7 років тому +1

      taariqq yes pls repot but u can spray insecticide to kill of the ants n then proceed to cut off the dead roots n pot it up again. Orchids conserve sugars in their organs this is for survival n also to store enough for flowering n seed development. Thus when u leave rotten plant parts, creatures n bacteria love to make their home in there as it's filled with available food. Which nursery do u work for?

      Great many thanks. I am just a home grower. Although am looking into setting up a tissue culture lab with the help of a local nursery here in Karachi, Pakistan.
      I have a B.S. in Biology from UMass/Boston. Have been interested in Botany since 11th grade. My advisor at UMass was plant molecular biologist too; Dr. Steven Ackerman. Just have been out of touch for a while.

    Sir why you cut all the root

    • @PlantVisionz
      @PlantVisionz  2 роки тому

      When you remove all the roots, you reduce the chance of rot especially in high rain fall tropical Singapore. I live in Brisbane now and it can also get super wet like recent time. I don't remove all but all the dead and rotten bits to reduce the shock.

    Hello Hedrick, my Cattleyas has lost all of its root (rotten or dried up?) but the leaf are looking great. Thick and smooth. Even has new leaf come out in the past months. I use tree park and water once a week. It is indoor facing west so plenty of sun light. I am not sure if I water it too much or too little. Can you share some thought? Thanks.

    • @PlantVisionz
      @PlantVisionz  7 років тому

      Hi Bryon...the best way to tell if the plant is happy or not is by its leaf. If the leaf are still fat and juicy with what u are doing, then just keep doing the same thing. Depending on where you are living, once week might be a bit dry if you are in a subtropical region and doesnt get rain so often. I recommend adding some sphagnum moss to keep up the moisture in the root zone. Afternoon sun is too strong for cattleya with little roots as the heat will cause dehydration. I recommend morning or 50% shade conditions (such as under the tree) for newly repotted orchids unless its terete vandas which needs a lot of sun to do well

    Hi Hedrick,
    Thanks for sharing your experience.
    I bought some Cattleyas and I have some questions.
    Why you remove all roots even the good ones?
    Is it dangerous to water the Cattleyas leaves from the top and loose the plant as for Phal.?
    Thanks for your update.
    Daniel

    • @PlantVisionz
      @PlantVisionz  4 роки тому

      Hi Daniel, I remove all the roots even the good ones to force it to survive and through out stronger roots. If your area has high rainfall, not a good idea to water overhead all the time as it will encourage rot. Hope this answers our question..happy to further clarify as well

    Why did you cut away all the roots? Is it really necessary

    • @PlantVisionz
      @PlantVisionz  3 роки тому

      Because the rotten ones can attract unwanted insects and prevent root rot. If they are healthy and white, a trim can help stimulate the plants to grow root. Gotta keep up the watering through

    UVB my percivaliana was naughty starting to send out new roots and in ONE night, the little bush snails came out and munched a bunch of them. If I had taken five minutes to put moss around those roots, I wouldn't be in this situation, but I have found that hydrogen peroxide will kill them rapidly, so I soaked the whole thing, but I don't know if it kills the eggs. Do you know how long bush snail eggs take to hatch out again so I can re-treat in an appropriate schedule? Or do you know if peroxide kills the eggs as well? Thanks.

    • @calusek86
      @calusek86 8 років тому

      Yes, I've heard that it kills the snails' eggs from MissOrchidGirl. However, Maria Young use for this reason the yellow Listerine, a I myself use the Cool Mint variety of it. Good luck!

    • @indoororchidsandtropicals358
      @indoororchidsandtropicals358 8 років тому

      I'd never use anything with alcohol on roots personally. H2O2 is also a bit drying, but breaks down to water and gas. Maria also used a concoction of soap, baking soda, and oil in a way too high concentration that damaged her plants. You're also not supposed to combine those three things together. It's best to treat plants for the specific disease or pest that is ailing it or you can end up with phytotoxicity. Also, for example, if you use an insecticide containing imidicloprid for spider mites, it kills any beneficials that may be preying on the mites plus it acts like a fertility drug on mites and you get population explosions. Also, certain kinds of alcohol in certain temperatures can really damage tissues which then become disease/pest prone because the plant is weakened, so it's really important to properly identify the disease/pest and treating specifically for that ailment. Thanks so much for passing on the 411 about peroxide killing snail eggs though! I was positive I'd have to treat the plants more than once every few weeks until they all hatched out and were killed. I totally soaked the whole pot in peroxide, but say, for example, there was a snail egg on the underside of a piece of bark in a concave area and as the liquid level rose, an air bubble got trapped where the egg was and so the egg didn't get peroxide on it. Hopefully that didn't happen because I tipped the container around a bit and swirled it to get it into all the nooks and crannies, but when I repotted I did it in a way that i can keep an eye on the root tips to watch for further snail damage just in case I missed some.

      I know what You are coming through. I'm struggling with snails in a pot of my huge Iwanagara Apple Blossom, and I repot this although it's going to bloom :( I used the Listerine and I will remove all the old media. All the good-making creatures probably are already dead :( if they actually were there before my intervention. Moreover, I will probably divide it into 2 pieces because it's too hard to water and it will be easier for me to get rid of these snails. But I wonder if my Iwan. will be able to bloom anyway... Thanks for sharing Your knowledge. I will be more careful now.

    • @indoororchidsandtropicals358
      @indoororchidsandtropicals358 8 років тому

      I would not use listrine or anything with alcohol on roots. Alcohol can damage tissues by drawing water out of them and or by freezing them if it evaporates too fast. Regular hydrogen peroxide will kill them and is easier on roots. Also when you do repot, if you can get in to spray the roots off really well with a hand sprayer, it will help remove any eggs that may be hiding. I don't know if your plant will still bloom after being divided..that's a pretty big shock. Be sure to have four or more growths per divison to prevent it from being set back too long. If you're a newer grower, I'd leave it as one piece or have more than 4 growths per division. Bigger plants are more forgiving of the mistreatment and mistakes that we all make as we learn.

    • @calusek86
      @calusek86 8 років тому

      I'm quite a new grower and I wish I had known this about Listerine and alcohol before... Actually I thought I can learn something from Maria Young but it seems that not really... She should remove this video. My Iwan. has 10 PSBs and I did not divide it, Listerine damaged some of the roots, but plant is setting back many new ones. The PSBs became more shriveled than previously but fortunately it's a very big and strong plant and is already getting better. I also used Listerine on my BLC. Durigan as it also had snais... :( Poor plant :( but also surviving. Stiupid me.
      Thank You for Your feedback.
