  • Sometimes it's a good idea to photograph different subject then you normally do. That is exactly what I did today. I went out to find some butterfly's and photographed them with the Olympus 60mm F2.8 macro.

    Altijd mooi, mannetjes oranjetipje. En op de eerste bloem zie ik ook een eitje zitten. Misschien op de tweede ook maar dat kwam niet goed genoeg in beeld.

    Beautiful pictures of the butterflies. I especially love the shot with both butterflies. I like that one of them is in focus and the other one is out of focus while also making a repeating pattern. Very pleasant to look at.
    The video is also very convenient. I am looking to buy an OM1 and possibly this lens. It's nice to see what this combination can do and what the difficulties of the lens are.
    Thanks!

      I think there are not much difficulty with this lens. The only other macro lens that comes close to this one is the 90mm. That has stabilisation, 4x enlargement and you cab stay a bit further away because the 90mm. But it is much more expansive and the size and weight are much higher. So in the end I love this one because I can take it anywhere I want without hesitation! Another positive you might find the 60mm for good prices second hand. Thanks for watching and your kind words. I really appreciate it! Grt guido

      Someone commented that it also worked in autofocus but that doesn't work on my camera. So I'm not quite sure what the difference is. But it's designed to only work in manual focus as far as I know. Thanks for watchibg. Grt guido

    Thank you. Wonderful video. I appreciate your discussion on why you didn't use focus stacking. Terrific photographs. I noticed that in several of your photos, you did not use f/2.8. but stopped it down slightly to f/3.2 or f/3.5. I liked how the images turned out.

      Sometimes, I raise the appetite a little. It is to get more of the butterfly in focus. But it's always a compromise because you also get more of the background in focus. To be honest, in a lot of the images, I shoot multiple different apertures and just look at home, which is the most appealing. Thanks for watching and your comment. I appreciate it! Grt guido

    Good to see you looking well :-) for low level images I use my 11 year old Olympus OM-D E-M1 because it has a drop down screen -hoped the new OM-1 Mk 2 would have one.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      Oh, thank God the om-1 mk2 did not have that drop-down screen. I really hated that thing in the em-1. You see that everyone has a different camera and how they use it. I always turn the screen to the side and then up the same effect, but it takes a bit of practice to aim the right spot like that. Thanks for watching gerry. Love the video Guido. The small depth of field with macro and enough speed to elimate the wind is hard indeed. Still without flash, you have a good hit-rate 🙂The butterflies are caught perfectly. Very nice!!!

      Thanks for your comment. It actually was difficult to get that document, but in the end, I'm happy with the results also. At some positions, I really waited for minutes before the wind would drop. It's just the best I could do I guess. So I'm happy to see you liked them! Grt guido

    Lovely images! Those butterflies are so pretty. The details on their wings and some nice bokeh of the background, very calming shots. I always thought the butterflies will get scared and fly away if you get that close to them 😂 btw, how do you determine whether or not you want to shoot landscape or more macro? Is it related to the weather, i.e. no fog? Just curious 😁

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      As long as it's cold enough in the morning, the butterflies won't go anywhere. You have to be really careful if you touch them by accident and they fall off they will die... it has something to so with weather, my mood, and especially when I know there is something in that particular season that I find interesting to photograph. These butterflies are there for a couple of weeks every year. But I don't want to come home with nothing so if that means switching subject the I have no problem with it anymore. I used to do this all the time and just adapt to the conditions but somehow the landscapes got me 😅 thnx for watching grt guido

    First time I see a video of the 60mm with an explanation on how to use it properly. Sure the 1:1 focus switch is tricky. It took me a while to figure this out (I asked in a forum). Thank you for that.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому +1

      The biggest problem with the 1x1 switch is that it goes away when you change the wrong setting. Sometimes I'm busy and then I look at the results and think huh... ow yeah I have to use the switch again. It actually took me a while before I figured it out myself 😅 thanks for watching and your comment. I appreciate it. Grt guido

    Interesting comparing 4:40 and 5:00. I actually preferred the smaller, brighter “bokeh balls” in the latter.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      It's a difficult choice, isn't it?! I was 100 per cent sure that the bigger bokeh was better when I shot it, but when I got home, I wasn't so sure anymore. So I posted them both, and I think k you are right. I think the repeating pattern is better in that image. Thanks for watching. Grt guido

    • @michaelhall2709
      @michaelhall2709 2 місяці тому +1

      @@GuidoVanDeWater Well, bigger is not always better. 😊 Seriously, I consider bokeh a great tool for subject/background separation, and love the abstract quality it can lend to a photograph. But Gregg Toland’s cinematography for CITIZEN KANE, where just about everything is always in focus, is considered amongst the greatest in film history. So when I hear the mft format so often criticized for being less able to achieve background blur, it feels like bokeh has become less an artistic tool and more of a fetish.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      @michaelhall2709 totally agree and to be honest this is one of the reasons why I love it for landscapes. I see all those medium format and full frame photographers focus stacking every shot... I hardly ever stack one... every negative has iets benefits. But for example with birds it never bothered me. I just try to work around it a little more.

    I have the same lens and similar struggles to yours. I think focus stacking would still help while holding the flower stem. Getting proper DOF, and accurate in-focus shots is always a challenge for me too.
    Butterflies in my area fly away when I get to 10-20 feet from them; I like your idea to get them in early morning when they cannot fly yet!
    Have you found the OM-1 mkii to make anything easier? I have the OM-1 mk1.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      Well, the om-1 mk2 does not make it easier for these shots. I've been using that gnd filter more often last week's and am actually quite surprised by the results. If you go during the day, then they will also fly away or not sit at all. These cold mornings are perfect. The only negative is that they rarely open their wings. Usually only for 1 or 2 seconds before they fly away. If I look at the images now, I'm actually quite happy with them without focus stacking. Thanks for watchibg. Grt guido

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      No, these are all the standard images. I could not take any high-resolution shots due to the wind, and I never boosted the resolution in post processing. Only do that when I want to enter some kind of competition, and they have these stupid images file rules where only full frame photographers can join. The only thing I did was use that noise reduction in lightroom, and that usually makes a massive difference to the overall appearance of the images. Thanks for watching grt guidl

    Just pointing out a spelling mistake in the title. The plural of butterfly is butterflies (not butterfly's). You would use "butterfly's" as an adjective (not a noun) such as if you were talking about parts of a butterfly. Hence you could say a butterfly's head or a butterfly's colour. Many native English speakers also incorrectly spell the plurals of nouns.

    • @GuidoVanDeWater
      @GuidoVanDeWater  2 місяці тому

      Ahh thanks that Is helpful information. I actually always rely on the auto correct from Google when making these titles. I guess it knows that the word is right, but it does not look at how it's used in a sentence. Will try to remember it. Same with the blades of grass. Looked it up before, but sometimes I just can come up with the right words in location. Thanks for your comment and watching. I appreciate it! Grt guido
