Sprinter Van IKEA bed hack

- Using IKEA Skorva bed supports and hardware with US Cargo Controls L Track stud brackets and cut down 3/8 fine thread by I inch bolts, nylon washers and lock washers, this project came together. I estimate just over $100 in hardware costs and retained existing sprinter van L Track.

Just a suggestion: if you thread a nut on bolt Before you cut it, when you remove nut (post shorten), it will clean up threads. Super simple, fast, only need One nut. 👍🏼
Thank you, great tip!
Some English bloke on UA-cam used another IKEA product to hang the Skorva frame. In England, I think it’s called Metod, in America Sektion. I have used just a single bed for a long time. I just used a gorilla rack and made my bed the top shelf. I’m about to make a bigger bed. Thanks for this.
Bench drills are fabulous
Thank you for the video!!! I can't wait for my Ford Transit to arrive so that I can implement this. I plan to use 1/8" rubber 2" wide as a continuous gasket between the metal and L-Track... of course, this is my theory and not tested out.
The rubber is a great idea as I do get some metal creaming out of current setup. Thanks, I am going to look into application of rubber.
Neat !!
Invest in a 3/8 Milwaukee ratchet. Goes alot faster.
Skorva rails are great. Inexpensive, strong. I was fortunate that with my old 2005 Sprinter, there are slots along the bottoms of the recessed panels for windows that the Skorva end tabs fit into perfectly. No need for L-track or any other major hardware. I just had to fabricate some L-shaped brackets out of some aluminium flat bar and tap some threaded holes into the horizontal rib underneath to secure the rails.
Hi. Would you happen to have any pics of your bed mounting solution? I have a 2007 and looking for an inexpensive hack. Thx.
@@erictittle7531 I've got a couple of vids posted on my bed setup - the first of two will show you how I got my Skorva rails mounted.
I've got a 2005 Sprinter and the way the sheet metal around the window panels made it stupid easy - I don't think the next models have the handy dandy slots to use there. You'll see.
Otherwise, a cheap way to go would be the mounting brackets that Ikea has for these things, mounted to something like a 2x4 and that mounted horizontally on the walls.
Wow thank you
You’re welcome 😊
This is a clever money saving bed hack 😎
Thanks
Getting ram 2500 soon
Can you share any info about the table of that drill press?
Looks professional!
I wished I’d seen this three years back 👏👏👏👏. Are you planning to install a air conditioner being in Texas it’s a must have
Absolutely will be installing AC, but want a 12volt unit that can run without a generator. Believe this will require at least 800 amp hours of battery bank.
@@vandingo1 we run a 120 volt Houghton air conditioner from RecPro for 4-5 hours on 600 amp hours of Battleborn batteries.
Thanks and good to know. Being in hot zone territory I am looking to run ac from 10 to 16 hours…not sure yet but want the capability while boone docking
I love the set up.
Do you think the L track brackets will hold on vertically mounted L track?
I have L track installed in my van that runs vertically.
Should be stout enough. The US Cargo Control L Track stud mount brackets are rated for 1,333 lbs each so they should be plenty strong to handle the load which I figure roughly is around 500lbs. Two grown adults plus mattress, ply board and hardware. The interesting unknown is load strength of riveted L Track on the Sprinter. Think I am good though as we would never have maximum load while driving. Thanks
Yes. My dad said he uses the ltrack brackets Ti tiedown automobiles on trailers. He said one would suffice per. Side instead of two, then just drill out the middle hole in the metal plate.
i love this hack, concerned about the rattle sound on the L - track once it hits big bumps. Did you find a solution to quite it down >. thanks, for this video, I plan to follow this
Hi, I am exploring the spray on rubber product and will experiment and report out. Thinking I will spray into the area where cargo control inserts meet the L Track.
Hi would you have a link for the things you used pls
Great video! I want to implement this bed in my Transit. I don't have a dremel tool or a vice. You mentioned that I could special order the bolts in the right length. Do you know where I would order those from?
Best of luck with your build. I would suggest Amazon, Home Depot or Lowe’s. There are also specialty suppliers on the web, my recollection is Zoro might have them.
@@vandingo1 Okay. Thank you for the suggestions!
Amazon, Actually, since I only used one L track bracket I have an extra set of brackets and bolts if you want to buy them
Im going to put in a full size bed. Would i need 3 Skorva bed slats or 4? how far apart do you put them?
Full mattress is: 54" X 74"
Im in a 136" Promaster.
Hi there, I believe I originally had 4 set up, but also had a queen bed with 2 people. Seems like 3 would work, I always opt for added support, only because I am not an expert or an engineer, so I tend to add more not less. Looks like you found the video I was referencing…ua-cam.com/video/Beejxq5w1cQ/v-deo.html
do the nylon washers need to be purchased separately, or they come with the ikea part?
Purchased separately.
Do you build the walls around that track? How much weight will it hold?
Hi, I ended changing the design so did not fully install, you can see in later videos on my channel I shifted to using 8020 to construct the bed platform.
Did you find a way to lock them in to reduce rattle and prevent them from coming out of the bracket on rough roads?
Not completely. After mounting sandeply and throwing a 10” mattress on top the rattle over rough roads is reduced, but not eliminated. I plan to stay the course, but will consider options if needed.
Do you think it would come out of the bracket on a rough road?
I added L brackets on top of ply, no rattles
So I never drove it off rough roads, but assumed the L Track Us Controls interface would lock it in. I have since removed the L Track and have gone to an 8020 fixed bed frame.
Do the brackets come with the Ikea rails? I'm not finding them separate.
Hi Chris, they do not. IKEA will give them to you if you go to their customer service window, or you can order them online, my recollection is Amazon had them.
What screws did you use to attach the l track to the vans wall metal?
It looks like he put in rivet
This bed hack cost me $750
8:12 What is the size of that drill bit?
I believe that is 7/16
Hey mate could have saved you tons of money and time because Ikea sells a track to hold the bed mounts, $25 each, All you have to do is mount the track on the Van and you're in business. nice set up you made NYWAYS JUST COST more money but very sound ThNAKS
Wished I would of know!!! Just ripped the LTrack off the van and am awaiting aluminum 3x3x3/8 to affix to side of the van, then 8020.
Hey F. Ball! Do you happen to know the Ikea part number for that track? Let me say Thanks!!! in advance!
Hey Vandingo, We have a Sprinter van without the L-tracks. Would you recommend the same Ltracks or go with the IKEA track?
does it rattle on rough roads
Have not had it on rough roads but on uneven roads I do get some squeaks. I put some rubber strips where the bed struts sit on the brackets, which helps but doesn’t eliminate entirely.
