Sprinter Van build for a first timer. Well, actually my daughter purchased a used Freightliner and together we did her build, so technically this is my second build; however for her van she did all the interior work, my responsibility was plumbing and electrical.
Purpose of this channel is to share each step of the build process so that other DIY’ers have some reference for their builds. Not racing through this build, and don’t have a specific timeline, but will upload videos as I make progress.
Cheers!

Okay, well, roaming around on the world wide interweb I found this beauty…check it out! This model year almost matches the years I have worked for Toyota, can’t believe how fast time flys! This thing is cool, really cool, super cool…I use that term a lot in this one. Please offer up suggestions and advise as I am open and can use it all. Future is bright with this one!

Driving out of Texas to Colorado and Wyoming to connect with family for a 30K in Jackson Hole and then trip through Yellowstone, this was a sort of first shake down trip. Not only was this a great family trip, but I learned some things about the van that I will incorporate along the way.

I bought mine 1992 LC HZJ77 6month ago I love it so far plus I got in good deal
Great to hear, still enjoying mine as well; although I paid too much! So far no regerts.
@ this thing last forever and they hold there value, I bought mine from Portland to didn’t pay much tho $26500
I like that awning. I’m adding a Baseline Overland rack onto my old Suburban, now I think I’ll see if the Yakima will fit. How do you think it’ll hold up in breezy conditions?
I think with the pulls and tie downs this awning will handle a level of wind conditions. So far impressed with Yakima’s build quality, at this point I recommend the big 270, particularly for larger vehicles.
@@vandingo1 I just measured Bubba, I need an awning 120” long if such a thing exists, the Yakima is 90” long. I want to cover the passenger door, which I use a lot when camping. She’s a big-un for sure.
Wow, that is long, probably into the van build or RV market. Maybe two awnings is the answer? For example the 270 and right next to it a shorty that goes straight out.
That is one cool Landcruiser! Look forward to seeing it on the trail someday soon. My old suburban came with a Ramsey winch, and just like you I needed to buy a controller, once I did that it worked great. I wonder if it’s possible to get the back story on the neat camping conversion from the previous Japanese owner?
I wish I knew more about the previous owner’s story! The Ramsey on his cruiser has an issue so am looking at replacing the winch motor, found one on Amazon for around $100. Cold out there in January but this spring will be an opportunity to get the cruiser dirty! Good luck with your project.
@ the Suburban is in pieces right now, won’t be roadworthy for a month or two. Good weather for us is April to May!
Sir I heard that the antenna mount tends to leak , did you run into this and would have been a good time to address it now 🙏
Thank you sir, had I an awareness of this potential flaw, you are correct as I think I would have attempted to address. It’s definitely a great recco for other van builders working with Sorinters. Maybe the good news is if the problem occurs on my van I can back back to a certain video to remind me how to dismantle the whole thing :)
What type of wood?
That is Sandeply from Home Depot

Good to know!
Headlight experts say the led chips need to be aligned up and down, not like u installed them. Yours are oriented left right. U need to rotate the bulb. And dont touch any bulb with your hand. Oil on your hand will kill them
They are clearly not correct based on how the beams project at night…on one side I am blinding on comers. Thanks and will adjust and report back!
My 2019 Crew model Sprinter came with a complete rear steo with the wiring hookup farther to the left.
Rear step
Interesting , MB clearly has changed location between yours and my model year (2021).
I bought the same Yakima swing away. Very heavy!
I don’t recall the weight spec, is it higher than competitor swings?
Thank you for sharing! I nought the same one, but sitting in the box for several months. Inspiration to get it on. Janice Port Angeles
Great to hear and hope the install goes smoothly.
I original goes in the middle and super simple and not expensive
I looked into the OEM rear view mirror but my memory was it was a bit more complicated as the Sprinter was not originally spec’d for it therefore I went with the inexpensive glue on version.
Except oooooone little problem.... literally everything 🤣
Why wouldn’t you plumb it straight to your vehicles main tank sprinters have an auxiliary port on the pick up it’s plug and play not a good idea to store fuel (diesel) above your exhaust/turbo mate common sense bro
It’s a gasoline Sprinter, not diesel, and I went the inexpensive route on the diesel heater rather than spending 4x the amount for a gasoline heater.
Hi Again, have been watching back through your videos and congratulations on the progress. I was just wondering what you meant about your update to place the lights at 3-9. I bought some lights and mounted them directly as the halogens due to the “tabs” how did you rotate them 90 degrees?
Okay so it’s been some time since this video but my memory is you can position that light and rotate in the fairly thin metal bulb housing. I would keep messing with it to see if you can get the bulb to lock in various positions. I have to adjust my driver’s side as it’s throwing light too high and blinding oncoming traffic, so I will be able to recall the adjustment process better. Will follow up soon.
How did you blow a 500 AMP fuse?
I have no idea how it happened. The other weird thing going on is the system is showing 0 state of charge, yet a volt shows the batteries at full. Something has screwed up the settings…is my current thought.
Just an observation - the Lynx Shunt is what controls the SoC and until you tell it it’s 100% the first time it has no frame of reference. You can do this only in a very weird way via Victron VRM and remote connection. Silly as you are next to the van anyway most of the time. Andy @ off grid garage channel has done a good video on this even if he has discarded the lynx shunt as it doesn’t track DC loads despite the firmware update
Plus looking at your setup of Lynx shunt then lynx distribution then lynx power in. Hopefully I’m wrong but this is not the designed way. Batteries should go in Lynx power in, then attach to Lynx shunt, then to the Lynx distribution or power will never flow over the shunt and hence no record of charging.
@Over_50s_DIY_Vanlife thanks for your note, the set up you are referring to is in the Victron manual; however I adopted a sequence that UA-camr Explorists Life showed in his Victron build videos. And what surprises me is everything was functioning normal, with appropriate State of Charge readings before I discovered the blown fuse in the Lynx distributor. So more study and head scratching to come, for sure.
Having watched your “expansion” video, I see you are good for power. A thought on blowing the fuse is it appears you are not “pre-charging” the capacitors in the Multiplus. At 12v like you are using the inrush current will be pretty high. On my 48v system I recharge via a resistor for 5 seconds to prevent this issue.
I didn't see a single gamer at home.
Home gamer for me is non-professional!
The gamer moved out😂
What was the outcome?
It went great, love this awning! ua-cam.com/video/FRW5KAcnnsc/v-deo.htmlsi=iUWTkbNzN-u7dzjX
Dude…..open the box already
Okay
can hole be drilled above where you sit in van ? i want to buy sprinter that dont have ac but cabin is separated from storage space ?
I don’t know about this as directly above the driver on a sprinter the dront of the roof is still curving and is not yet flat on top. For a safe mounting AC units must be on a flat ceiling surface which would start just behind the front seats.
@vandingo1 ok i will install then split mini ac then i found it for cheap 500 usd
Basically we have a LC for every member of the family🙏🙏
It may be easier / cheaper to use the non-isolated version and just use the chassis as ground. It’ll save you running that black cable.
That sounds like a great point, next van I will strongly consider.
@@vandingo1 thanks for the video, still very helpful to see your install 👍
You have 15 series 80/20 1” or 1.5”??
I believe it’s the same. So 10 series is one inch, and 15 series is 1.5 inch.
Thank you!
You got yourself a nice truck. Be careful with those fender flares those are aftermarket you are not gonna be able to find replacements
Great to hear that and need to be careful when off road as liking the flares, thx
Does the rafter beam store in the casing or does it need to be stored separately with the hand crank?
It store separately with the hand crank.
@@vandingo1 I appreciate the video and the quick response!
Sure thing
that is a super clean LC.
Thanks Nick
Hello! Can i ask how much it cost??
It was too much! Well over 40k
That is the most beautiful landcruiser i have ever seen
The US was robbed by not getting this spec. What a machine
Totally agree!
I’m jealous. That LC is Beautiful.
Thanks, it’s definitely an adventure!
awesome video mate, those cruisers will take you anywhere.
Thanks, looking for the best parts supply houses to get the full services and upgrades going.
wow...that thing is gorgeous 🙌
Thanks, already digging in on repairs, just discovered the winch appears to be roached, need to figure out if I can rebuild a Ramsey winch.
Love the tune and the pups!
Thanks, used some kids category music, seemed fitting for the puppers!
ho.w much does the super spring raise your van from before
So my recollection is a slight increase in front and rear, as build out continued in the rear with more weight, the rear seems back to original height. Sorry, don’t have before and after measurements to be more precise.
I just had same issue. I love riv nuts. I was using in sheetmetal.
Viva La Rivnuts!
Plus nuts are for plastics etc riv nuts for metal
Just got a plus nut kit for a plastic storage box company named Roam in order to add a lid organizer, so your statement is certainly applying in this case.
The factory horn is quite lame if not embarrassing. What year is your Sprinter? I have a 2023 and the same camera setup. I got as far as the top 3 Torx before looking down just to check it out. I'm worried about breaking that camera housing if not the cable. It doesn't seem right that yanking the grill and the camera pops out of the housing only held by the pressure of the cable. Maybe you got lucky. That is going to be a very expensive repair. If anyone has any insight on protecting that camera or discoing it the right way. Thanks!
You are right, I got lucky!
@@vandingo1 I installed the Owl PIAA Super Bass horn yesterday. Super Bass is a bit of an overstatement but big improvement over factory. I just detached the top 3 Torx and side clips and tilted the grill. Didn’t have to detach the camera wire and there was enough room for tools just tilted. The bottom clips were a pain and I wasn’t going to crack that grill by yanking which wasn’t working as it is a matching paint factory $$$ upgrade. Glad it worked out for both of us and we have a real horn now.
How's it working out for you?
It’s good, but it struggles to cool the van when temps go over 100. If you are on the queen bed the down draft keeps you plenty cool but if the van AC is off and your sitting in the front seats the rear air is not robust enough. I talked one Scirocco fan to move the air and am considering installing a second fan.
@@vandingo1 thanks for the feedback. I'm installing my D20 on my 6×10 cargo trailer conversion tomorrow. Wish me luck... lol
Why do you use the sharpie? You just need to use the pilot hole in the center of the circle.
You may be right, not sure I needed it.
A very thoughtful tip! Thank you!
Happy to help!
Good job 👍
Thanks, a bit Frankenstein but works just fine.
Where can I find the video on this install or products used, thank you
Best vid after 1 hour of all the rest. How have think held up?
Having finished the van, but high expectations for functionality!
You deserve so many more subs ! Everyone like, comment and subscribe to help this guy… I’m doing this to my 2023 sprinter tomorrow! But I’m in Australia 🇦🇺

Shouldn’t the plywood have holes in it for ventilation to keep mold at bay?
Yes sir, in future videos on the channel you will see where I did cut holes in the wood I used for the bed platform…ventilation is indeed important.
@@vandingo1agree
super video - thanks for all the detail.
Glad it was helpful!
Dude, please buy a socket and ratchet set. You're killing me with your mexican socket wrench
Okay
Thanks for the video. You can easily loosen the hitch connector to get the yakima hitch bolt through the left side to lock into place. Definitely a bad design by Mercedes but it does make your hitch kinda secure and theft deterrent.
Thanks, great suggestion, thinking you mean the 4 Torx screws on the face plate? I tried disconnecting the harness plug and wasn’t successful. Thx
@@vandingo1 yes, the torx screws.
Great video. One thing I have learned is even after your build is complete…. You will always see improvements during or after your trip.
Omg~ perfect trip,)
I had a 2020 Tacoma before I got my sprinter and I took a 2020 Tacoma horn and put it in mine
As a current Toyota team member I can vouch for this one; a Tacoma horn is definitely a step up from the OEM Sprinter horn!
