Instead of the similarly priced but much more labour intensive plywood, you could use the IKEA LURÖY bed slat system. I don't know why everyone doesn't use the Skorva/LURÖY combo for their van beds. Thanks for sharing and planting seeds for all those that follow!

Hey guys, thanks so much for the idea, but I would have liked it better if I was presented with the finished product first so I could see if I wanted it prior to watching you build it. I fast forwarded it for that part.
Hi Barbara 👋🏼 thanks for the input. Maybe we'll put a time stamp in the description so people can go right to that point if they want to see the finished product first. Thank you for watching and happy building!
Hi there! Thank you so much for watching. We are loving them so far. We're still building out our van but have taken it out camping about 4 times and haven't had any issues. 😊
This is the simplest, lightest and most space efficient bed frame solution - love it. Out of curiosity, why did you install to those boards instead of riveting the brackets directly to the van wall?
@pete's b-roll Thank you! I'm so glad you love it. 😊 We attached it to the wood, instead of the van walls because we raised our bed higher than the metal support beam that goes horizontally down the middle of the van. If we had attached the skorva beams, to the van walls, at this height, some of them would only have been attached to the 1 metal sheet of the van wall and the rivets would have gone through to the outside and that didn't seem as secure or efficient. We also did the bed before we put any insulation in or the shiplap and instead built those things around the 2x6's. I supposed you could insulate and do your walls, before the bed and secure it that way if you choose to. This way just worked out better for us. Hope this helps and happy building! 😊
your video is excellent. Could you tell me what size of wooden strip I need to use please? I'm about to make a bed in my Mercedes sprinter. I hope your help please.
On a step drill bit, use a black indelible marker to mark the drill width JUST AFTER the width you want to stop at, that way just drill until the "painted" ring touches the metal, push more lightly as you get to the final ring to drill through... For large structural items, use PLUSNUTS over RIVNUTS as they put more MEAT behind the sheet metal for a stronger hold. TIP for "finding" rivnuts behind a panel you want to put up: grind the head off a few bolts sized for the rivnut, and make a point on the end. Now just thread in those to have the point stick up just a bit, and position your panel, then PUSH it into the rivnut to mark it and take down and drill from the back using those marks! The only issue here is that with the stock SKORVA mounts, you can't have the mattress extend into the wall cavity for tall people to sleep transverse since the bracket mounts ABOVE where the SKORVA attaches... To get around that, just buy some bar stock STEEL to use instead of the SKORVA stock mounts, and cut it long enough to allow room for the SKORVA to slide down in, and for a bolt on either side to hold it to the wall. Just put a washer BEHIND the bar at each hole, and this will create the gap you need for the SKORVA to slide down into it for support. This makes the SKORVA attach at the TOP of this bracket, and leaves you free and clear to extend your mattress into the wall cavity for maximum transverse sleeping length. In that case, I suggest Home Depot DUCT INSULATION against the outer walls, it has a sticky back, foil front, and comes in 15' rolls for around $22 and is R3 insulation value. Then skin over this with 1/4" plywood to lose only about 1/2" of van width... In my new build I'm just starting, I'll be doing the first "shower in a drawer"...
Hi there! So glad it helped and thank you for watching! The washers we got are locking washers from Home Depot. We use them for basically everything. 🙂
Those Ikia beam supports must be the best thing since sliced bread for the camper converter , simple fab idea amazed you found them, Im UK based & checked the online AKIA and yes we can get them in the uk Phew ! . Just a few idea s from myself , the bed plywood base i would cut a centre line joint not offset which would equal maybe less movement between you rather than underneath one of you (pinched mattress covering ) and lastly im a big boy not in the Victori Secrets weight range & i notice your hubby is kind of hunky sized , So im questioning are three beams enough because if that bed drops its dog burgers for dinner that night Lol ! for the price of 4 x beams $$$ Stronger even more mount the side clips with washers nuts and bolts on the 6 x 2 wood before mounting on the van sides / not just screws . For other builders purchase double the amount of side metal clips with one set mounted lower for when just going on local trips when all the gear is not required under the bed , so for the price of 8 x extra clips you will have a dual position bed . Happy following you guys keep up the good work.
Yes, since sliced bread! 😆 We have links to all of the products in the description of our video for Ikea or Amazon but they're cheaper at Ikea. Glad you're able to get them there! Just make sure you ask for the mounting plates too and they should give those to you for free. The actual Ikea house beds come with 3 beams so we figured it would be enough but you could definitely add another if you want the extra support! We've have both of us and both of our dogs on our bed and haven't had any problems (one of our dogs is a 160 pound Great Dane). We put at least one bolt and locking washers in each of the mounting plates, along with screws but you could probably do what you said going all the way through the wood with bolts and nuts, depending on where the 2x6 is mounted on the van. Also, your idea of making it extra versatile and using extra mounting plates to adjust the bed for a quick trip is pretty cool! Very creative! Thank you so much for watching and happy building! 😊
Thanks guys I really like this construction. Simple and efficient. How much working time did it take in total if you exclude the waiting for parts to arrive?
Greetings! Thanks so much for your videos. With two tiny kiddos, the research and planning process for a Sprinter build is extra overwhelming, and we've gained so much clarity and confidence from your videos, along with finally finding THE bed design for us! I just had a couple of questions on your bed build - which size riv nuts did you end up using for the 2x6 attachment to the wall? And after some time with the bed in place, how's your build holding up? Would you go back and do anything differently? Thanks again!
Lo único que no me queda claro la herramienta para poder hacer el hueco y la herramienta para poder engranpar esa rosca en la lata de mi furgoneta. Vivo en Amsterdam y no se como conseguir esos materiales. Pero tu idea está súper buena de la cama.
Great idea and great video! Thank you for sharing it. I went to the IKEA website and, as with all things - there are some mixed reviews about the strength of the brackets. How have they held up for you guys?
Thank you for watching, glad you liked it. 😊 They've honestly been great so far! We haven't had any problems. We actually had some in a bed in our house awhile ago too and they worked well.
Hi guys, loved your extended bed frame from IKEA...what's the name of it please as I would love the same idea in our sprinter? Great conversion , Andy from England.
Hi! 👋🏼 Thank you! We put a parts list, with links, in the description of this video. Hope that helps and please let us know if you have anymore questions. Happy building!
Thank you guys, liked your video and the idea of that ikea beams, however, I would like you to improve on your camera, it swings a lot and I couldn’t even finished the video because I get soooo dizzy.
I recently ordered the rails from IKEA and they had no idea what I was talking about when i mentioned the brackets. I even provided the number for them and they said they didn't have such a thing. This was IKEA in Plymouth Meeting PA. I should have tried other stores. I ended up purchasing the brackets off amazon. : (
Hi there! We bought ours on Amazon and put the links in the description of this video. Thank you so much for watching, glad you liked it. Hope this helps! 😊
Nice video, however I went to Ikea and purchased these beams after seeing the video and asked for the mounting brackets only to be told the hardward comes with a bed purchase or check spare parts which was the never ending return line, no thanks I'll stick to plywood. I had to order the beams out of state and had my daughter pick them and no brackets after all these hoops, a little frustrating, now I'm gonna return them whenever she feels like going back in the store to return them, this would've been such an easier bed build
Hi there! 👋🏼 Just wanted to say first and foremost, thank you for watching! For the brackets, we had to call and they sent them to us through the mail. Or, you may be able to order them through their website, not sure on that one though. The part number is in the description of the video. You can also buy them on Amazon (they're not free that way, unfortunately) but their is an option to purchase them. That link is also in the description of this video. So sorry you're having trouble getting them. Best of luck and Happy Building!
@@EncompassAdventure Prayer works my friend, my daughter waited in line, unbeknownst to me, and spare parts gave her the hardware. I'm grateful for your response and God granting my want
Hi there. We have links and information on them in the description of this video. You can get them at Ikea or on Amazon, we put links for both. They're called Skorva bed beams. Hope this helps! 😊
Also, would you be so kind as to give a parts list? I was actually taking notes through your video and I'm questioning the 3/8 Riv nut as you said that you weren't using many of those. The drill bit info was awesome too and for the quality finish you got, worth getting. I want to bolt the wood into the Skorva slats for increased safety in the event of a crash or something. Can you drill through these do you think. Great video of the details!!
@@anner6342 Thank you so much for watching, we're glad we could help! We've put a parts list together and put it in the description of the video. Yes, I do think you can drill through the Skorva support beams. We also plan to do that and use some of the pre-drilled holes as well and are going to use a wing-nut on the bottom to allow for easy removal when/if we need to. You're welcome to message us on IG as well (@encompass.adventure) if you have any more questions or want to bounce ideas off of us.
Great idea thanks for sharing! Now that you have the bed in for sometime, have you encountered any rough rattling or have any concern of the bed popping of the brackets while on bumpy roads since the Ikea telescoping frames are not directly mounted to the wood support beams but are laid loosely in the brackets? Any thoughts on how one would lock the bed assembly to the support beams anyone...
Hi there! Thanks for watching! We haven't had any problems as of yet. We're still building out our van but have taken it camping multiple times. There are little holes in the tops of the beams that we utilized with a bolt and wing nut to secure the platform wood to the beam to keep the wood from sliding, when stopping. Otherwise, the weight of the wood and mattress keep the beams down. If you wanted an additional security measure you could screw in some L brackets underneath the bed, from the wood platform (that the mattress sits on) to the wood on the wall/wall of the van. Hope this helps! Happy Building! :)
Might be real late to the party on this one but you could get some wood shims and slide them into the mounting bracket where the support beam hooks on. This would ensure a very snug fit so there would be no rattling.
I wish I had known Ikea would give the brackets at no charge. I paid almost as much for that brackets as I paid for the rails themselves. I bought them on ebay.
Hi there! Thank you so much, we're glad you like it. All of the part numbers and links are in the description box of this video. We provided Ikea and Amazon links, whichever is easier for you to purchase from. The metal mounting plates do not come with the telescoping rails but Ikea will give them to you for free if you ask. Hope this helps!
No problem, glad you liked it! You have to call them or go into Ikea and ask for them. You can also buy them on Amazon (we put links in the description of this video) if that's easier but then it's not free. Hope this helps!
Maybe bed slats might rattle or even move around when on the move , think i prefer a solid base overall. Plus easy to move out when carrying big items.
Hi spacegreycoralred, yes exactly what misha frog said. Plus, we ended up building a bedside storage box on the side of our bed using the plywood as as the bottom of it. The metal beams aren't spaced for the wooden slats and it would be difficult to secure the wooden slats without drilling a lot of holes into the metal beams. We actually have an Ikea bed in our house with the mwtal beams and wooden slats and have nothing but issues with the slats sliding around. Plywood is much more solid and secure. Not saying you couldn't make slats work for you, it just wasn't what we preferred Hope this helps!
Treat yourself! Our jigsaw and circular saw just weren't cutting it anymore (pun intended 😋) so we upgraded a little. They're not fancy or anything but they make things a little easier. Hahaha good catch on that comment! 😁😆
Hi there! The handful of times we've driven with the bed up, we haven't noticed any noise coming from the Ikea supports. We think the weight of the wood and mattress on top, help with that too. Once we're done with the build, we're going to attach the Ikea support beams to the wooden platform, with screws and wing nuts to prevent sliding. We can definitely do an update video once we're done with our van build and have driven around more but so far, they've worked perfectly. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!
They are captive nuts... Use a captive nut gun to fit... Sometimes called riv-nuts, hence use a riv-nut gun... Or you can often do it with just a bolt done up tight with a spanner to pull them in
Hi there! We used 5/16 rivnuts and 5/16-22 bolts. For the step bit, I think we drilled up to the 1/2 inch measurement shown on the bit itself. I think different brands of rivnuts can require different sized holes. There are charts that show what size hole you should make depending on the size of rivnuts you use, we would suggest referencing those beforehand too. Hope this helps! :)
It was worth it to us because it made it way easier to install the rivnuts. I know some people use a wrench and kind of make a homemade one. I've seen a few videos on it. 🙂
We're still building it out. We've definitely been taking our time and pretty much took the winter off from working on it. 🥶 The cost differs for everyone. It all depends on your layout and what types of materials you use.

Nice!
Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for!. Could you just clarify what washers you were using on the bolts that go into the riv nuts?
Thanks
Great job you did
Thank you!
@@EncompassAdventure Awesome! Thanks for the quick feedback. I now plan to use this idea on our build.
This is great! Do you screw the IKEA rails to the mattress base?
Love the idea using the telescopic beams. How have they held up for the last year?
Thank you guys, liked your video and the idea of that ikea beams, however, I would like you to improve on your camera, it swings a lot and I couldn’t even finished the video because I get soooo dizzy.
we did a really similar bed - love it!!!!
Oh awesome, are you glad you did? Is it working out well? And thank you. 😁
Where can I buy the metal nut rivet crimper and the nuts? Haven't found anyone that sells them. And oh what a great idea for stability. Thank you!!!
Hi there! We bought ours on Amazon and put the links in the description of this video. Thank you so much for watching, glad you liked it. Hope this helps! 😊
Hows the bed and the side of the van holding up with the bolts where they arE?
Where’d or what are they called those adjustable dad supports for my IKia I tried to find them on their website and I’m having no luck
Hi there. We have links and information on them in the description of this video. You can get them at Ikea or on Amazon, we put links for both. They're called Skorva bed beams. Hope this helps! 😊
How high did you mount the boards? We have Irish Wolfhounds so similar size to your Great Danes? Also, what are the IKEA supports?
Awesome! I'm going to use this same system in my ProMaster. Do you know the part number for the support brackets for the Skorva support beams?
Just curious where did you get the telescoping beams?
Nice job
Thank you! 😊
are those self tapping bolts/screws
I wish I had known Ikea would give the brackets at no charge. I paid almost as much for that brackets as I paid for the rails themselves. I bought them on ebay.
What size mattress fit in there? Or did you have to custom cut something?
Nice design! May I ask how much everything (hardware) cost? Thanks!
What part IKEA part number is the adjustable bed frame and the brackets? Be useful info for lots of us no doubt. Thanks
Hi can I please ask what size rivets you used ? Thanks
Simple, easy, and economic. 😂
Hi I like the bed idea. I am going to ikea to buy the supports but what is the part that screws on the wood? Does it come with the rails? Thanks
Is there any reason you opted not to use the existing holes?
Hi...thanks this is great...one question: you mentioned that IKEA provides the brackets for free; how did you obtain them?
No problem, glad you liked it! You have to call them or go into Ikea and ask for them. You can also buy them on Amazon (we put links in the description of this video) if that's easier but then it's not free. Hope this helps!
Wonderful video of bed setup. Keep on sharing progress!
You didn't want to do your wall panels before putting up the bed?
What is the weight load I’m a big guy do you think I would have to put a post for support
Normil garage. My house would fit in there.
Buen vídeo 👌 gracias.
Thank you! 🥰
👍👍👍👍👍
Can you please advise for folks to wear safety goggles. It was bit scary warhcing you look down using the graduated drill bit. Ta
What size rivnuts did you use to mount the bed to the van wall?
genius ! THANK YOU!!!!
Our pleasure and thanks for watching! 😁
If not do you have the part number?
If you are gonna drill huge holes in the plywood, then why not just use IKEA wooden bed slats?
Awesome! I want to some tools now ..Thanks a lot ..⚒️😢🤣
Ratchet comment. 🤣🤣
Treat yourself! Our jigsaw and circular saw just weren't cutting it anymore (pun intended 😋) so we upgraded a little. They're not fancy or anything but they make things a little easier. Hahaha good catch on that comment! 😁😆
Hey guys! Any feedback on the ikea supports being noisy when driving ?
5/16-22 bolt everywhere for those I cannot find 5/16-22 . Can anyone please give me an idea where I can get those?
What size are the rivnuts?
Seppos need to start using Celsius
What is the name of the tool you used to put the plugs in the metal
They are captive nuts...
Use a captive nut gun to fit...
Sometimes called riv-nuts, hence use a riv-nut gun...
Or you can often do it with just a bolt done up tight with a spanner to pull them in
Are you able to post a link to where you got the metal beams from?
Yup, all of the links are in the description of this video. Hope this helps! 😊
Hi guys, what is the size of the rivnuts you used? And what's the size of the holes made with the step drill bit? Thanks :)
Came out great!! Do you have a link to the metal bed frame? Thanks
Thank you so much! Here is the link for the Ikea piece: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/skorva-center-support-beam-galvanized-90124534/
what is the name of the tang
Woody…you are going to lose some fingers if you keep putting your hand by that saw guard…please be careful
how much did the van build cost you total?
And also, with the rib nut tool thing you have, do you think it is worth the buy even if I will never build anything other then the van?
It was worth it to us because it made it way easier to install the rivnuts. I know some people use a wrench and kind of make a homemade one. I've seen a few videos on it. 🙂
We're still building it out. We've definitely been taking our time and pretty much took the winter off from working on it. 🥶 The cost differs for everyone. It all depends on your layout and what types of materials you use.
hello thank you and warning ¡¡ use googles for safety from Mëxico
you forgot to paint the holes you drilled from rusting get iob you two
Thanks so much 🥰 we did actually paint them, just didn't show it and it's white paint so it's hard to tell. You can kind of see it at 12:02. Very good point though! Always paint the bare metal to avoid rust. 😊
