Women in Hungary can choose career , but also they can have family and the state helps a lot. My daughter was born few months ago and my wife can choose to stay at home 3 years with the baby or she can choose to go back to work in part time or full time. The companies can't decline women to go back to the same company.
@Dark Knight yes, it can be a problem, but when a woman declares that she is pregnant, the company has about half a year to prepare. That's HRs task to solve it.
In Poland we have decreasing birth rate too. Government gives 100 Euros of monthly benefit for every child but number births is the lowest in years. The problem is that employers ask women on interview if they have children, day nurseries and preschools are expensive.
Yup. In laws want grandbabies but society wants me to have higher education, a career, a house, a dog, health insurance, a safe car and all the pre-baby stuff..If you don’t have the “nest” for a baby, society does not want you to have children in the US anyway. It’s considered personal failure if you don’t have a baby but also failure if you have a baby while being poor. Only rich people are seen to deserve this life. Everyone else pretends while in debt or just does it anyway.
Growing up during the anti-welfare times I always remember people saying “if you can’t afford to have a baby, don’t have a baby. It’s not the governments responsibility to feed, houses, etc your child. Take personal responsibility & stop looking for handouts” as a working poor person I’ve lived my whole life with no government handout & no kids. I always want kids. But Amazon pays no/little taxes.
Men can provide that. You have a culture that encourages women to throw out their husbands when things go south and you expect men to invest themselves in women. The problem with the Western woman is that she has become a godless women who believes in the Govt, wokeism and socialism, rather than a woman who has placed her faith in Divine Providence.
@@philoslother4602 Thailand actually isnt a poor country in comparison to african nations and has a quite high birth rate when you compare it to South Korea. In short it is somewhere between in both. I think Moldova is the bigest exeption from this rule.
Most people would choose to raise familes if they did not feel so economically precarious and vulnerable in modern society with the constant pressure to work and earn or fall behind. Then people who cannot afford to rear their children get told they should not have had kids they could not afford. Loss of family support due to career pressures taking people away from their traditional support structures. Fix the economics and society will follow.
Also, job security is horrible. While everyone in the EU gets money if they can't work because of covid, in Hungary they didn't give anything to people working on hospitality, tourism, festivals, theaters etc. My workplace was closed 9 months out of the last 12 (I could find a different job but that is besides the point, there are thousands of people in a situation where their roles disappeared and got no help)
@@jeroenarendonk4160 most advanced economies are neoliberal nightmare dystopias at this point so economic insecurity still applies. Third world countries have high birth rates to ensure survival and in anticipation of a brighter future. Western countries have reached their zenith and having children for many people means losing some economic comforts and regressing to a less secure position in society. Career pressure means many professional women cannot afford to have children too young as they miss out on career development. This increases generation intervals and often women will forgo children as a result. The prudent choice for personal stability means small families or no children. All my female colleagues now in their thirties had hoped to raise familes but societal fragmentation and career pressures eg internships residencies etc mean they are not in a position to do so. This is not their preference.
Partly economic... however it's more of a cultural thing: modern societies are more individualistic and we want to be more comfortable. However this won't be sustainable for ever... without children there is no future. And we cannot replace ourselves with other people's children.
I am a 36-year old Canadian male, but my mother's family are Hungarian & I grew up with a lot of Hungarian influences. I really miss the Hungarian culture, family friends & intellectual conversations of my youth with the Hungarians I knew. Hungarians are a tight knit & intelligent group of people and have a beautiful culture. Greetings from Canada!
and as for Hungary many people actually can't afford to have children. If you are a woman and have a job interview one of the first three questions is 'do you have children, do you want/planned to have children' - although it's illegal. If you have a job and have a baby and you are on maternity leave you have to be very lucky not to get fired when you want to go back to work. And women living in small towns or villages can't even dream about having back their job after their maternity leave because there are scarcely have any nursery/daycare opportunity. Sounds great being tax free after the third kid but most of the hungarian families don't earn so much to get it.
Notice how both the child free woman and the woman with 3 kids are both perfectly happy with their decisions. However, somehow, it socially acceptable to criticize and mentally torture the woman who chose to be child free. This isn’t a Hungarian thing either. Same thing happens in the US, but to a lesser extent.
Ohhh booohooo society is evil and unfair. Welcome to reality. This is the way the species guilt trips others into having children in order to continue the genetic line.
@@MrDude826 in order to perpetuate endless cycle of suffering, you mean? "Genetic line" is a buzzword, all life on Earth is related, so we are all part of the same huge genetic lineage

Increase jobs ,encourage women in the work force ,promote paternal leave ,childcare at offices .Having babies that have no future to look forward to in the country is not the answer.
The only thing stopping me from having children is money. We already have parental leave and women in the work force. But I don't think parental leave is enough.
More women in the workforce isn't helping. That's one of the factors making it harder to sustain your lifestyle while getting children. If you want higher birthrates you need to make it affordable to have children, by paying higher wages so people aren'T so dependent on two full-time salaries.
I married at 33. I have six children. I would not suggest it. It is draining, tiring, and hard work. I did what I did, I love my children, but it's not fair to ask women to have big families.
Exactly. People should stop making huge decisions on little issues. The divirove rates across globe are so bad. People spend so much cash on it and then they divorce each other.
Notice the kids screaming and running around while the crew is filming? That's the exact reason there are child free hotels, there's nothing evil about it. Last month I spoke to a Hungarian girl who works for our company and she told us that in Hungary a woman can have up 3 years of maternity leave, for each child. However, you can be demoted while you are away, so your career is toast. Then we asked about the fathers, they get almost no paternity leave, don’t have to take any. It’s incredibly imbalanced and as a result Hungarian women have to choose, career or children
It is true. I was told as a young surgeon: no matter how great and talented you are, you are a woman and will have children. A lot of times they don’t let you go back to the OR, even if you take barely any leave. It depends on what your job is.
Same here in Czechia. There Is 6 months paid maternity And then up to 4 years paid "parental leave". Even thouth the "parental leave" can be taken by fathers as well, it's almost Always the mother. And u can See in the pay gab, in the procentage of women in leadership positions, etc. It's horribly unfair.
GO RSI: Ha ha, EXECTLLY same stuff Is Said to sergeons here too. A lot of professions don't want to hire young women for this exect Reason. So there Is pressure from gvm And society to have kids, but then they ar not willing to provide conditions for it.
I’d give anything for 3 years of maternity leave. I got 12 weeks (only partially paid) here in the US. I cried every day when I had to go back. My little girl didn’t want to eat for days when I was gone for 10 hours a day. She eventually started eating, and I got used to working...but it’s just not natural imo. I had to work bc my husband got laid off and I didn’t have a choice but to support us.
There IS a pressure. Even random strangers are breathing down on people's necks. If you are in a relationship, people are pushing marriage. If you're married, people are pushing having a baby. If you have one, they are pushing "making a sibling". You can't go to family gatherings without these comments or your mother complaining that you are not giving her grandbabies...

However currently I believe I would end up with some sort of Burnout and no one would be helped by that, especially not a child.
This is why family/society support and maternity/paternity leave would be so helpful. Too much “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality and elder generations wonder why younger just can’t even deal with the reality of having a baby. Too much stress.
@@goddessreverierosehawthorn3724 You are spot on! If countries want their own people to continue to populate the land, we need to go back to basics. Families need more support. This is why many couples choose only a couple of babies or none at all. It is stressful to manage a large broad on your own.
I think your point is massively overlooked. I'm a parent. It takes a huge emotional, psychological and economical toll on your life. I love my children but I can I understand why people chose not to have children. There are not enough supports.
You're completely right. And to put it maybe a little too theoretically, but I think people having to have children should never be politiced because this process becomes so cynical so fast... but people being able to have children should be, absolutely.

Pretty flawed logic considering nobody signed up to be born and somehow owing the society. Yes, governments gain more taxes and the country as a whole might get richer the more people are in it, but there are plenty of smaller nations that prosper so the problem isn't necessarily declining population (it's actually the opposite when you look at the whole world). There are other ways for a country to become richer, and other ways than birth to make population grow in a country.
Yes, in modern times it's controversial to say that it's women's responsibility to have children and keep the human race alive. They ask you, what interest is to you the survival of the human race?
I think that most younger generations don't want to have kids as they've seen how broken the world and the systems made by the earlier generation that came to be. They don't want to bring kids in such a world.
Which is ludicrous as the only ones who can make it better are future generations. People are simply demoralised by a lack of purpose and struggling to make ends meet. All this is perfectly understandable and of course people are free to choose to not have kids however they will ultimately in their old age be supported by the children of their peers. By not having children you are essentially not contributing to your own future upkeep as society will have to care for you and people are living ever longer with higher expectations of living conditions. So I agree people have a choice but ultimately someone has to provide for the elderly and society and having a smaller future generation leads to disaster for everyone. Growing up in the USA I experienced tons of pressure to have children. The comment that annoyed me the most was "you will never experience real love if you do not have children." Bull. While I don't disagree that the loving bond between a mother & her child is special & profoundly unique I do not believe that type of love is the ONLY love or even the best love that can be experienced. In my long life I have experienced lots of loving relationships & have never lacked for love. Romantic love, familial love with parents, siblings, nieces & nephews, friendship love, etc. Bottom line is we should respect the choices that people make.

My problem with these birth rate-increasing programs is how deeply rooted they are in misogyny and sexism. Fertility rate in Hungary has increased from 1.23 per woman in 2011 to 1.55 in 2020. So Orban policies are having an effect slowing down and reversing population decline in Hungary. The child-free movement is pushed by Westnerners on Eastern Europe (where population is declining), but for some reason its not pushed in Africa (where some countries have fertility rate of 7+ !)
There is no childfree "movement". Rather, more people are discovering that being childfree is a valid option for life. Childfree Africans are trying to fight again stigma, but economic and urbanisation factors definitely have delayed reductions in African birth rates.
Wrong. The birthrate increased because 2011 was right after the peak of the financial crisis, and 2020 is a different world compared to 2011 in Hungary and in many other countries. People simply had more money to support a family. And 1.55 is still nowhere near sustainable. If western governments want their populations to have more kids, they'll have to do something thats considered radical - Lowering taxes, lowering costs of living, giving people more financial freedom, and less government in their lives.

They lowered their birth rate forcefully and now they are suffering from the consequences. They should not have had such a low birth rate because they are still a developing country as well. Another factor is that many families in China, in response to the one-child policy, killed their daughters because of a preference for boys (more economic opportunity and they wanted sons to carry on family name), and the effects of that is that now, men far outnumber women. That's also why there's so much human trafficking there, it's because finding a wife is so difficult as a poorer man. We have a French family member who recently moved to Hungary to attend veterinary college, He DOESNT want to move back to France. He feels as a young man he has better prospects in Hungary than he would in his home country of France. The tax burden for working French people is big and for a young person it can be daunting to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet.
It's interesting. I graguated last year from the hungarian veterinary medical university, and in my opinion it has an incredibly low quality of education. Also the wages for vets are quite low. I don't think i could raise a family of my pay even if i wanted to
The problem in Hungary is that people started to have 3 children just because of the free, discounted loan. They in their heart don't want 3 children they just do it for the money and with this money they can step on property ladder. You must mention that these people had to sign a 3 kids in 10 years contact with the government. Also if their marriage brakes they can't get divorced for the rest of their life because they will loose the discount & loan.

If you grew up in a big happy family, I think it's pretty likely that you'll want a big happy family of your own. Not that it means that you will, certainly things like economic pressure and finding the right partner might prevent this. Personally, I come from a happy 2-kid family, but with piles of cousins. So fun! My parents each had 5+ siblings, and each sibling had 2-3 kids. I saw how horrible it was for one cousin when her only sibling died as a teen, so I wanted a minimum of 3 kids. My husband comes from a happy family with too many children (8) and wanted fewer but not none. We agreed on 3-5. Ended up with 3. I'm happy. Children are a blessing. My sister has no children, she's blessed in other ways. There's no need to be against each other, I don't understand why it tends to be like that in the media.

I think it's natural from the government that they want to support families. In Hungary you really get all supports you need. Not just money but free education and you can also stay at home with your newborn for three(!!!) years (also as a grandparent or father).
I agree with the tax break. One of my cousins in Hungary has 3 children (her husband has one more from a previous marriage). They do get preferred treatment, though all of their children are thankfully healthy. I work in special education in America and know how difficult it is with one special needs child, never mind three.
One issue with this policy that was not covered here is how these financial incentives to start families affect the market. Right now, couples that declare that they want to start a family in the near future have an enormous advantage on the real estate market compared to couples that don't, because of these new tax cuts and government loans. The natural reaction of the market is that prices start to go up, to the point where child free couples or individuals that are currently in the same financial situation as those who plan to have children are now being pushed out because they can't access these loans and tax cuts that the market already adjusted to.
I mean, in the eyes of the government, people with children have created tax payers, people who haven't have decreased the amount of tax payers and therefore the economy. Therefore people with children are more valuable. I am not saying this is the right thing to do, but the government goes with the money, not with the heart.

It will change. The baby bust is global. As an economy picks up and women go off to work, they stop having babies. It's not just the west. It's every continent except Africa, at this point. This video completely ignores crucial topics like the government discriminating people who CANNOT have kids or making it impossible for couples who are not married to adopt. If you have lived in Hungary, you would know that unless you are rich, the support that the goverment provides does not make the whole situation much easier. The tax break that they give is about 90 EUR a month per kid. Imagine how much this would cover of the monthly expenses you would have. The loan they are talking about is 90.000 GBP for three kids - yes, it's better than nothing but 90.000 GBP for 3 kids is ultimately not that much AND it is a LOAN nonetheless, it is not money that you get for free. No one mentioned that you can only get this loan if you are a married couple and that if you get divorced, you have to pay it back all at one. The last family they showed is not representative of Hungary not because they are a traditional family and have a lot of kids but because they are much richer than the average Hungarian family. In the UK, cost of childcare is so much it's the literal reason I'm stopping at 2 children. I'm currently paying around £1,100 in childcare and that is including the 30 free hours I get for my 3 year old. If I was going to have another child, even if my wife skipped maternity leave and went straight back to work, I literally could not afford it. However, if you're not working and on benefits, you get all this stuff for free so the people who are breeding the most are not exactly from the best stock.
Have you thought of your wife staying home full time and taking care of the kids? That way you cut down on the need for childcare. Before the rise of two breadwinner homes, there were breadwinner/ homemaker homes, and that strategy worked for thousands of years.
I agree, at 38 couldn't have children cause my job low pay,,, but junkies benefit people are pop8ng a child every minute,, getting all the money and help,, while a working person can't afford a child.

So...Hungary is paying people to have kids who will also leave the country in 20 years instead of making it worthwhile to stay. An "economy" built on remittances sounds kind of third-worldy to me.
The model 'man works, woman raises a child' is considered outdated, but it made sense: halve the workforce, double the salaries. Now you have 2 people struggling twice as hard to bring in enough to support their families, and it leads to economic and phychological burnout.
Not to mention, the added cost of child care while both parents work. It is logistically difficult for parents these days. Especially if you live without extended family for support.
@Stuka Obergruppentruppenstuppensturm Quite the contrary. Children bring happiness, we just need a better system to support the parents economically...which we used to have, actually.
Its very expensive to have children. Hungary is going to pay out crazy amount out of its GDP if this thing really works out and people actually have many children lol We shall see.
Yeah, actually some of these are loans. There's the "baby expecting loan" that many people take. It can be up to 10 mil huf(around 33 000$), after two kids you get a 30% off of your debt, after 3, all of it is gone. (if a woman has student loans, she gets some discount after 2 kids and it's deleted after 3 kids as well) There's also the csok but it's a bit more complicated and I'm not very aware of those rules bc for a used property you don't get much money, it's better to buy a new one but it also depends on the size of the property and how many kids you have. It's between 2000 and 33 000$ and if you don't get as many kids as you promised you have to pay it back or something like that.
+Beyonder Is a long term investment. I wouldn't call it a cost thou, as the situation is dire ... with an old demographic and low work force, you are bound to have a serious imbalance, that not only that would cost the state a lot in pensions and burden the working class and young peoples who are left in the country, but could ultimately lead to the collapse of the whole system.. and with a negative birth rate, there is no end to this problem. But with such a program, you create the high possibility that the problem would be solved in 20 years.

Thanks to Hungary. The Polish government also provides funds for children. With governments in the West ever coming up with new taxes, increasing taxes, taking, or should I say grabbing money from families it makes it harder for families. People do not live like the princes at Buckingham Palace. With so many jobs having been shipped to Asia how do families make ends meet. We all get old. And need to think of the future.
The polish government can be populist all it wants, it's birth rate isn't going to go above replacement level, especially with that high suicide rate and relatively high mortality rate.
I dont understand why this is a problem when they can just help orphan children and babies from perhaps other countries have loving working families in the country (who are financially stable enough perhaps given some help by the government or something). Honestly the reality is that this is now becoming a GLOBAL issue. HOWEVER on the flip side what I will say is that it's wrong to pressure and belittle the youth and young folks to have kids. Children are becoming a luxury. They are just becoming too expensive to even have.
People who decide not to have kids, are not going to adapt an orphan from a third world country either. They have chosen to be childfree for the lifestyle not because they cannot have kids of their own.
@@Ally2018. I know this. My solution was soley for adults in the country who perhaps cant have children due to fertility issues since it's such a devastating population issue.

Couples (married), who agree in advance to having 3 kids can apply to a basically free mortgage (If they ultimately really have 3 children they do not have to pay it back). A family could get almost 30-40 million Ft this way. Which is cool because kids are super expensive. The problem is, that this extra/free money increases real estate and housing prices.
It also doesn't need to be a growth but at sustainability.

Wrong. The birthrate increased because 2011 was right after the peak of the financial crisis, and 2020 is a different world compared to 2011 in Hungary and in many other countries. People simply had more money to support a family. And 1.55 is still nowhere near sustainable.

I agree with the tax break. One of my cousins in Hungary has 3 children (her husband has one more from a previous marriage). They do get preferred treatment, though all of their children are thankfully healthy. I work in special education in America and know how difficult it is with one special needs child, never mind three.
Hungary is doing the right thing and saving its own people and culture.

I love rich people telling you that people do not have kids because they are liberals - yeah, because financial stability and mental health do not matter at all. Why does the journalist keep referring to 3 kids as a "big family"? It is considered moderate, not big.
It is a big family for european standards. In my town I know a lot of people, but only 1 family with more than 2 kids. It is usually 1 or two. Or none.
I don't know where you live but 3 kids is a big family in Europe. In Poland we have a 'big family card' that gives you access to discounts on some products and services (mainly public) and you get approved for it when you have 3 or more kids.

The model 'man works, woman raises a child' is considered outdated, but it made sense: halve the workforce, double the salaries. Now you have 2 people struggling twice as hard to bring in enough to support their families, and it leads to economic and phychological burnout.

Its very expensive to have children. Hungary is going to pay out crazy amount out of its GDP if this thing really works out and people actually have many children lol We shall see.
But they will save their pension systen and well their economy basically
The PM said the government will grant loans to help couples start a family. Not free
Yeah, actually some of these are loans.
There's the "baby expecting loan" that many people take. It can be up to 10 mil huf(around 33 000$), after two kids you get a 30% off of your debt, after 3, all of it is gone. (if a woman has student loans, she gets some discount after 2 kids and it's deleted after 3 kids as well)
There's also the csok but it's a bit more complicated and I'm not very aware of those rules bc for a used property you don't get much money, it's better to buy a new one but it also depends on the size of the property and how many kids you have.
@@davidgreen5994 True especially in places like Hungary but it can become a burden if the economy isn't doing well. More mouth to feed and more people to house.

So those who can not get these benefits have to spend more money on housing, because it inflates the market prices.
Going by the comment here, those not wanting babies have some weird desire to end the human race all together. They probably shouldn't need a home.
@@At_sk it mostly applies to home ownership. So if you want to buy a home you better be married with 3 kids :"D otherwise it is going to cost you a LOT. The small supply creates higher demand and higher prices (because u obviously can not rent the flats that are on RbnB, mostly because they are suuuuuper expensive).
I bet this ends up in significant growth in gypsy population in Hungary.
Then have 3 kids?
In the UK marriage is pretty much dying....it's deemed as a patriarchal system. Plus family courts don't help. Then it's lack of job security. Then long hours, high cost of living. A child is a life long commitment. Do women want to work and help bring up a family ?
In America as soon as you have a child you put yourself in poverty it takes two people to work now to provide for a household that used to only take one man the economy is so bad and the wage Gap so large people are deciding not to have children because they cannot afford to the daycare alone is about $150 a week.
This is what is needed to save the world. The entire world as we know it will economically and socially collapse. Governments won’t be able to fund programs, economies will stagnate or experience deflation.
If the birth rate doesn’t stabilize at around 2.11 or higher worse people will take more extreme measures that may result in the rolling back of progress for women.
