- Getting to know the cats (kedi) of Istanbul, Turkey, and the locals who care for them.
The perception internationally is that Istanbul is a paradise for cats - a place where humans and cats live in harmony. But is this true? In this video, we explore the cat-obsessed neighborhood of Cihangir on the European side of Istanbul. Here is our experience on the ground with the cats of Istanbul and our encounters with the locals who interact with them every day.

How come we don't anything like like this in US?????
Damn
You've got sexy and beautiful legs.
How tall ru?
Thanks. However, now the real VERY SAD issues with these feral and stray cats that are suffering, and if you are watching DW German News and BBC UK News is that the people in war-torn Gaza are starving due to the lack of food coming in from Rafa (border town with Egypt), are now resorting to hunting down for feral and stray cats and kittens, and setting traps with bait in hessian sacks, so that when these cats enter them for food, they are immediately TRAPPED, and could NOT escape, and the sack is then tied-up, and with the alive cat trapped inside, the cat or kitten is STABBED to death inside the bag while the blood is drained-out. When no more blood is dripping and the sack is no longer moving, you all know the rest. Then the dead cat is prepped to be eaten by the starving people of Gaza due to the lack of food coming in from Rafa. Thus cooking it on an outdoor pot is required, since many residential dwellings are now destroyed since the October 7, 2023 attacks. So where is God or Allah when you need him ??? Its NO FAKE NEWS either. Have a nice day, and have some compassion for these suffering people there as well.☹

In Turkey, we have a saying. Before moving to a place, look at the behavior of the street cats and dogs there. If the animals don't run away from you, it means people there treat animals well and it's a suitable place to live.

I am a Turkish person living in Istanbul. Despite having a very low salary, every month I buy a sack of food for animals, and sometimes I walk through all the streets and distribute it. Occasionally, I directly leave it at animal shelters, and I do this by choosing different animals every month. For example, this month, I bought a large amount of cat food, and if I have enough money next month, I plan to get food for dogs.

This happens in every single neighborhood in Istanbul not only Cihangir. It's an everyday life scene here.
That's right, I live in a very remote district of Istanbul, and even here, almost every apartment or house has a stray cat. They are like our children. We love them.

Heres something you may find interesting. :)
The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey''.
Name of my country has always been Turkiye, that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means ''land of/belonging to''...
...just like the Latin suffix -ia in such countries as Latv-ia, Roman-ia, Eston-ia, Austr-ia, Austral-ia etc etc. Another example; decades ago Czechoslovakia Republic changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia).
Anyways, most likely the Latin -ia suffix was derived from the Turkish version -iye,
as Turkish is much much older.
Because in old times people of different languages could only pronounce it as their languages allowed them, we got various differences in spelling like Turchia (in Italian), Turquie (in French) and Turkey (in English) all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye.
Mind you this was way BEFORE the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas....
...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''.....
....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), Rhodesian Ridgeback (because it's from Rhodesia), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc.
In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years.
Now in 2023, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their OWN country on the atlas, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected.
So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name in other languages to Türkiye, which it always was, we basically didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : )
So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : )
Best wishes. ;)

When I came from Istanbul to USA I saw stray cats escaping from humans. Which was so weird to me. In Istanbul, stray cats never run away from you because they all know we love and take care of them. They would instantly let you pet. I wish everywhere in the world would become this way one day.
I'm sure this guy would love this place - ua-cam.com/video/YldtzrA1qk0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=KritterKlub

Otherwise, they will become your next order of Kentucky Fried CATS !!! Try em, it taste just like your stray cats too.
Not according to Karen, they exterminated all animals and humans and came to fix turkey now
Cats can also enter mosques because according to Islam, cats are clean animals. The Prophet Muhammad loved cats very much.
it has nothing to do with islam. You can't see stray cats in any Arab country. this is old turkish culture
Don't talk nonsense. Cats are valued in Islamic culture. There is even a friend of the prophet named father of cats.@@sscourcher522
The love of all animals with Turks goes back millennia way before there was Islam. Look at other Islamic countries and see how they treat animals, and stop assigning anything and everything good to being a Muslim. You are turning people agnostics and atheists through this shop window Islam that’s being displayed by the cohorts of this regime.

Istanbul is the capital of cats... Even in the modern complex, there are dozens of cats roaming freely in the garden and inside the buildings. As soon as you enter the building, they surround you and meow.
DUDOLIDATOKAY!!!!
its not unique to Istanbul, many cities in other countries are like that too
.....WO denn... ???@@Jay59kt
All that hunter-killer instinct and they still manage to charm the pants off of us. Let's face it, some predators can be soft on the inside and fall hard for those they like. Another cute hunter is jumping spiders.
The cool thing is that they also have animal hospitals that work on fixing them so the population doesn't go overwhelming. The animals also recognize the hospitals and there are videos of mama cats bringing their kittens in.
lol NO! Are you kidding? They don't give a damn. Yup, there are animal hospitals but they don't treat them well. They treat them if they have some small injuries , otherwise they euthanasia them. Are you aware that street cats and dogs' population in Turkey is nearly 10 million? How do you think it's that much if those hospitals neuter them? They just don't care. Recently I callled the animal hospital to neuter 3 stray cats, and they told me to call them 2 months later to make an appointment because they were so busy. I took another make stray cat to another hospital and they told me that they don't neuter male cats.
Yes! There are a lot of times when mama cats either end up at the doors of actual hospitals or vets on their own to give birth or sometimes carry their young in their mouths and bring them to hospitals so they get help. They literally know and recognize hospitals and vets and these are street cats, not domesticated. They should not know what a hospital or vet is. But they do and literally go there and meow until someone sees and helps them.
Brilliant 🙏
Absolutely right! A sick cat came not only to hospitals but also to my mother's workplace to ask for help. Sometimes mother cats also come to ask for food for their kittens 🐈
That's amazing & so nice.@@Raven_Black_252

Hello 😊 ı am from TURKEY 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷 ı like cats and kitten 😊 Greetings from Turkey 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷😊😊
By that logic I as a Turk have no respect and love towards Russians because they don't treat animals like us. And no, there is nothing to change my ideas I guess. I can't believe how people like you say such things and think you are being kind. Russians and their arrogance and childish behaviours aren't loved here. We love kindness
У нас тоже бездомных кошек и собак подкармливают, вот только менее бездомными они от этого не становятся. Если в стране живёт народ который по настоящему любит животных, в такой стране БЕЗДОМНЫХ нет.
Ruslar Türkiye de yaşıyor. Nasıl Türkiye hakkında bu şekilde konuşursun . Bizim ülkemizde bir çok Rus var . Keşke herkes Rusya'ya dönse . Soğuk insanlar.

Наличие огромного количества БЕЗДОМНЫХ животных конечно очень "красит" страну и народ. Да их гладят, да их кормят и даже иногда лечат, но они БЕЗДОМНЫЕ, а значит НЕСЧАСТНЫЕ.

I am in my thirties and always lived in cities of Turkey both in center towns and close neighborhoods and I only have seen a mouse or a rat maybe five times at most in my whole life; I don't even know what is the different between mouse and rat, they all mouse for me. Anyway, when I see videos of big cities like NY, London and like many others with rats running on the streets everywhere no matter day or night, I always think the problem is the lack of cats and dogs in those cities. I love seeing cats on streets even if I hate their loud meeting fights in the middle of the night. Gülü seven dikenine katlanır.
I lived in Turkiye absolutely newer seen any pesticides problems house or streets.. right now I’m live in US here’s rat or mouse haven🙀 we try every think for stop them come.. unfortunately just spend money ☹️ then suddenly we found one street cat and we feed it right now more then 10 street cat everyday 2 times feed them our deck last one year any mouse we not see anymore.. 😺

I live in Eskişehir, another city in Turkey which is right next to capital Ankara, and the situation is the same here as it is in most of the country. We all have street cats who are fed by the locals, neighbors, and shop owners, cafes and restaurants. It's not just something specific to Istanbul, but you guys just know about Istanbul and don't care about other cities in Turkey so that'a why Istanbul is famous for its cats. Normally it's not a specific situation to Istanbul. For example our neighborhood cats are 4 of generation orange cats. Other cats also have families but their kids decided to venture out into other neighborhoods. The ones we feed and take care of are great-grandmother orange cat and her children the grandma orange, grandson orange and 4th generation greatgranddaughter orange lmao. Our neighbors or whoever is available feed them and they seek shelter in our gardens where we all built small houses for them.
Ben de Eskişehir de yaşıyorum ve çok haklısın 😂🎉
Don't take that guys view like its general, that dude from Cihangir obviously doesn't know anything else outside of his neighbourhood. I am from Istanbul but his statement also made me frown. We know that this is how the people of our country treats to animals as whole not just istanbul or cihangir etc.
That is a wonderful Turkish characteristic in general then ! So happy to hear this ! It's only human to fasten onto recognizable things, take heart in Ontario Canada we have 250 thousand lakes but no one knows anything about canada, or they've heard of Toronto or Vancouver or couple cities. We love cats and I wish streets were like this in the towns and cities.

As a second generation 45 yo local of Istanbul, I can confirm that majority likes and enjoys the cats. It has been always like that. A cat can cross your way somewhere totally unexpected and can make your day with their friendly cuddle. You just forget your anger, problem or whatever keeps your mind busy and pay your attention to it. This possiblity alone makes them worth to have around. Burying own poop, being usually quiet and hunting rodents are the bonus.

She is pretending like she is the savior of the Istanbul cats and tell all things like "my group did! we did! me and my group! my organization!" cut the crap please. :/ I know its not the best situations for stray animals but at least we let them live with us.
Yea Karen is just annoying person probably. Life of animals is hard and their answer is to exterminate them. She is using her superiority to judge other cultures. These people never learn. You go to turkey you shut up and let them speak. I would critisize turkey when speaking to turks not shittalk. Also not sure how critisizing kedi doc is helpful or fair. And i always saw people taking cats to vets and helping in distress. Maybe some dont have money for that. If turkish people could do they would. White people really just dont get some things but also they are not good at shutting up
Thank you for this beautiful and sweet video. It is our honor to host you. People who do not like animals cannot love humans.
God bless the people of Turkey. They are the kindest, most compassionate human beings on earth.
It is a beautiful city with all its chaos and you have captured all its characteristics very well. My cats and I send love from Istanbul
Beautiful video full of fun and emotions. My respect from Morocco.
Bizden de Fas'a saygılar❤❤
A tremendous and well researched video.
Thank you for keeping us all informed and showing us so many examples of the adorable cats, and wonderful people, of Istanbul.
Just like any human these dear little creatures want safety and comfort.
They lead such dangerous and wild lives. Often, when i see them appreciating the affection we give them, I fear for their sanity and wellbeing.
They appear to gain so much relief from our care.
One can barely imagine the pressures they go through.
This is why I LOVE TURKEY SO SO SO MUCH. THE PEOPLE AND THE GOVERNMENT KNOW HOW TO LOVE THE CATS.
It is like I am in dreamland , lots of love for them. Huge respect for those who loves the Cat .
Istanbul's cats are very cute and beautiful. I keep one at home and 30 in the garden 😊🐈
Türkiye’de binlerce ailenin evinden 20-25 kedi var bazı insanlarımız kedilere insanlardan daha çok kıymet veriyor Türkiye’de kedi sevmeyen insan çok azdır ❤kedi❤
Istanbul is a city that loves cats very much.
As a cat lover I'm amazed. My self rescued 11 cats from chinastreet.
Still 4 are with me. The my babies, my family.
Thanks you for all the good people who take care of the street animals. Only Animal lover are in my opinion are good people.
I will visit Istanbul soon.
Ben Çeçenim, Kore'de yaşadım, Fransa'da büyüdüm ve şunu söyleyebilirim: Türk halkı kedileri en çok seven ve saygı duyan halktır. 👌🏻🙏🏻🇹🇷☺️))
That British lady sounds like that Karen in the comments of any cat video claiming the caregiver is abusing the cat and he/she should know better..
I think its amazing how everyone embrace and all share the care of the cats around the city. Sad to see the lady being so negative, your going to get odd poorly cat but its the circle of life and these cats are living free. People accept them to move in to live if they want to, but the cats clearly don't want to be domestic pets. i think she was right on one thing they could spay the set number a year everything needs a happy balance and to prevent too many unnecessary poorly cats so they cant be cared for then she has a point
Hilary, as a westerner you want to take everything under your control don’t you? Cats will ask your permission whether they can have litters and also they shouldn’t get sick. If it becomes a problem it is better to erase it all and that’s the reason you don’t have cats over there. However it is Turkiye and we respect nature and how it works.
❤ I'd LOVE to visit Istanbul for the cats. I also love it when people take care of them, rather anything from nature. It also shows the people of Istanbul are caring people ❤
Canlarim bu Melekler olmasa hayatin ne tadi olurki❤❤❤❤❤
People who claim that this is related to Islam know nothing about Türkiye or Islam. Cats are considered pests in other muslim countries. You can find exceptional examples here and there but there is no other place like Türkiye for cats. And it's not limited for İstanbul too. You can find people in rural Anatolian towns and cities where people feed stray cats in their backyard gardens. This is more of a Turkish thing And İslam is not a defining factor of this behaviour. According to Islam dogs are unclean animals. But Turks feed stray dogs too.
I have never heard in my entire life that dogs are unclean in Islam.
You are clearly islamophobe or something Cats are loved in Islam and probably every Muslims who loves animals have cats dogs are not impure just their saliva is impure. You should study before saying nonsense
@slintde1 if you touch a dog, you need to perform ablution. And if you want to pray in home, no dog should live in that home. Didnt hear?
only dogs sliva is dirty still we treat them in a good way and don't teach us when you know nothing be silent if you don't know whole story huh 😏
@@user-my3jp3kk9k I'm a muslim in Australia, I have seen muslims/Arabs treat dogs horribly and YOU don't teach us when you know nothing be silent if you don't know whole story huh 😏
You owe it to yourself to watch the documentary "Kedi", a heart-warming film about a few of the cats of Istanbul. It is remarkable how good so many of the street cats look, when you compare to the diseased, half-starved look of many ferals in other countries. Never mind how approachable these are. I could never visit Istanbul, because people would ask me about the cultural sights and I'd just go on about having petted hundreds of cats!
There are a lot of lovely cats around Istanbul. ❤😍🧡
Hello bro 😊 ı am From TURKEY 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷 ı like cats and kitten 😊 Greetings from TURKEY 🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷😊😊
One things for sure no mice and rats around, i have stray cats in my backyard living under my folks old van, now my backyards free of mice n rats. 😅
Cats don't live with us, but we live with cats. They are the owner of Turkish streets. Anyway you can almost find the same amount of cats at the every corner of Turkiye, but not only in Istanbul.
Also in Greece the same

Awww my daughter would love to visit here. I am sure after this video she will definitely make this her next vacation.
I love how you guys find the other side of the POV story of 'istanbul cat' the other truth of it. It's not all rainbow and heaven but compare to other place treat the cat yes they are better
Bless the lady and the man who take care of them and provide all the necessities for the cats
Very affectionate and cute kitty cats. It is true; " a person who doesn't love cats, will never have love for other living beings". Thanks to these great Turkish people taking such a good care of cats!
There was a character in one of the cartoon magazines about Cihangir's cats. Even an animated movie was made about it. That character's name is 'Kötü kedi Şerafettin' (Bad cat Şerafettin).
