And the famous, you just have a 'Fear of Commitment'. No I am scared of how my life is about to get significantly more unaffordable. Working at the bank, its crazy to see Newly weds come in drain their savings and investment accounts to pay for weddings, house, bigger vehicle, etc. And I always say to myself, what if these two never touch this money and continued to save, they would be millionaires in no time. Reality is they all end being forever en-debted to creditors because they did 'the right'
@jsocials my grandparents times they didn't do all that. They just got married with 4 people around. My parents both said that the fancy weddings was a new thing.
Why should we get married. 1. **Love and Commitment** - A public declaration of love and lifelong partnership. 2. **Legal Benefits** - Access to legal rights like tax advantages and inheritance. 3. **Starting a Family** - A stable foundation for raising children together. 4. **Companionship** - A lifelong partner to share life’s experiences. 5. **Tradition** - Honoring cultural and religious beliefs. Marriage is a significant step that encompasses love, legal benefits, family, companionship, and tradition.

What we seem to forget now is that marriage for basically hundreds, if not thousands of years, was just something people did for security, status, safety, and to procreate. As someone who’s also dreamt to get married and build a family, someone who was once engaged to someone they thought they’ll live the rest of their life with before they had to face the ugly truth of some of today’s relationships (discussed during this stream), as a single father who is being dragged in family court for the past 3 years by a high conflict and toxic co-parent, having to spend all my life savings in lawyer and court fees to be able to have a relationship with my son, the idea of taking another chance to marriage/having another child with the risk of going through this a second time scares me sh*tless.
I am from generation X. Marriage is one of the things that died and went away from mainstream culture like the typewriter, pay phone, cursive writing, and the VCR. Life was so much better in the 80s!!!!!
I believe that nowadays many men and women are NOT marriage material for various reasons. Many people don't understand the value of marriage, and some can foresee that it may lead to failure from other people’s experience. In divorce cases, one party often benefits disproportionately, taking advantage of the situation without fully understanding the consequences of their actions, especially if children are involved. This often leaves the other party suffering, which is why many people avoid marriage altogether. I've been married for 18 years, and our relationship remains strong. We've had both good days and bad days, but we've worked through them together - that's what marriage is about.
Like you said many people aren't marriage material so even if we work hard on our side, the spouse is not qualified then the marriage will be painful for us.
Fair play. However, if you didn't have any money, I guarantee that you would only date a man who did have money and you'd expect him to share it with you.
Yeah, that's the issue with the law being biased against higher earners in a divorce. As a man, I will only marry a woman who earns around the same amount or more and is cool with a prenup with lawyers present. Too risky to be the higher earner in a marriage. I actually married without a prenup before and divorced, I didn't lose anything thankfully but I was so afraid the entire time that I ruined the relationship between my ex wife and I. I was too emotionally unstable and anxious. I believe it was due to the fear of losing stuff in divorce and it's not about trusting your partner because people change.
I feel like I won the lottery being with a loving husband where we met through our mutual friends and have a great relationship. We dont believe in divorce and work on our differences with respect. We have goals we are working towards and we're a team. But I think the issue is we dont have real friendships anymore, we're all stuck on our phones and not building communities and truly connecting with others. The comments section under my post is a great example of that.
The real issue is missed as usual. No one believes in love or marriage anymore because all they see around them are unhappy couples who divorce each other after a while or complaining couples who are only staying together because society expects them to or because of children. Most of us grew up in such families as well so what do you think will happen? Yes, young people today have unrealistic expectations and think getting married is a burden because they are scared. If there were more examples of wholesome functioning marriages , that will restore faith in love and marriage and more people will choose to get married. The solution is to restore people's faith in marriage. Once that happens everything else will get sorted out on its own.

I am here single from Gen Z and have no even a dream to marry in the future. It is huge to take this all responsibility and expectation. I think we Scandinavia have the same problem like south Korea, not only for women but for man too. especially in Norway. Traditional marriage seems doomed and everything is expensive and high living standards. The only option we have are to live alone forever, this is because the society forces us to make this decision.
I’m in the US with no universal health care, no paid family leave, and no other generous welfare benefits like in Scandinavia. I’ve been married for 7 years and have two kids with the hope of having a third. The problem is that people are inward looking and don’t want to make sacrifices for marriage and for kids. Also, I take my Lutheran beliefs seriously, unlike people in Scandinavia. Divorce is wrong unless it’s done because of desertion or adultery. People don’t have a strong moral code anymore so why would cheating and divorce be wrong? That’s what drives marriage rates down and creates the overall distrust that we are seeing in relationships. We have never been as wealthy in history as we are now - if marriage isn’t “working” now, then it should have never worked to begin with. It’s people’s attitudes toward marriage that is the difference.
@latrinemarine826 The USA is much better than Norway, where you will lose half of your income to taxes. Imagine you earn 10k and pay half of it in taxes. What a disaster. People will not understand until they experience it. High living standards come with high taxation, which is just unbearable. You speak about welfare in Scandinavia, but what should they do with such a system? Should they put you in prison or leave you on the street? Come on, be realistic. If you don't know how it is here, come and experience it for yourself, for God's sake.

Sure it could be great, but it also has the possibility to completely destroy your life if you pick the wrong person and red flags in people aren’t always obvious. When 50% of marriages end in divorce it’s a very good sign that marriage is not a great idea. Being single is much less drama and it means your not at the mercy of another person.

People just don't want to commit, especially here in America. You could be in the talking stage for 5+ years and they would STILL choose someone else over you. While you were showing your support for them and being there for them. They always run off with someone they met for like one month and all of a sudden that person is their whole world. Then you got those who just straight up want to f**k around and never commit. That's disgusting. It's literally safer to be single than even try getting to know someone at this point.

Lack of money (unless it is poverty) should not be the reason not to get married. Millions of people around the world get married today with limited financial means. Today's young people in the cities (both men and women) do not want to sacrifice their current lifestyle. Marriage requires sacrifice for becoming a parent. If they do not want it, that is their choice.
This is 100 percent the real reason. The vast majority of people can afford it per se. The issue is a tiny amount of people can afford it and still have a large house, vacations, nice cars, weekly eating out, and the other limitless consumption options. Modern westerners are simply not willing to cut their lifestyles and live like a middle class person did in 1990. Marriages are the best way to involve humans into society. They say millennials are the last gen that may experience TRUE LOVE! This is a sad state of affairs! And needs to be portrayed as such - it’s truly worrisome & SAD! Besides money; this whole competing thing between two genders - constant you vs me has gone too far, fragile egos, extreme ‘isms’, unwillingness to compromise/sacrifice, thinking as a team vs too much ‘I/me/myself,’ distractions due to availability of ‘options’, online dating that ruins the whole experience of finding true love, relationship advice taken from social media fads, friends/people who intervene, and themselves have had failed relations leading to decent people/couples also self-sabotaging! You work hard, break whatever ceilings in life, but don’t have that one person to call yours only and return home to - then what have you truly achieved? Families/marriages breaking down, collapsing and this increasing trend points to a lonely, sad future for all and needs serious introspection rather than glorifying single-hood and individualism. One has to know and realise, if one has been single through out or major part or their life, esp. divorced then one has FAILED at love, and that may or may not be okay- really depends why, but it certainly mustn’t be glorified! Highlighting people who have had success in long-term love MUST be glorified and sought after. There are some who still hope to find true love/companionship - not the fleeting kind - the one&only kind, but current media portrayal of things which glamourises certain things dissuades and worries them. God save us all! Or not….
Agreed mostly, but define 'true love'. Also money does play a part, I think we should find a way to get money out of the equation of relationships as much as possible in general. Also marriage is a religious/spiritual thing and should remain that, let's throw out this whole legal bs of being married. Get rid of the legal documents and just have religious or spiritual ceremonies for marriages.
Marriage for me is great. We both work (as engineers) yet have "traditional" roles meaning that I as the wife do about 90% of household management/work and childcare. He prefers to dedicate himself to earning the most salary possible. But I'm okay with that arrangement bc we agreed he pays 90% of household bills which frees a large portion of my engineering salary to be used in personal investments and he gets to earn a bigger paycheck, portion of which he also uses in personal investments. The result is we both are financially invested in the marriage (since we both have marital assets), and we both know our roles without ever having to step on each others toes. Overall, it's pretty harmonious.
Lmaooo. Delusional. You're both financially invested in the marriage but as far as the biology, only YOU have ever been invested which means he can walk away ANYTIME, no matter how food you think you haven't. And even that division of responsibilities, YOU are actually doing 95% and hes only doing 5%, againz perfect formula for him to walk away. That means the only reason he sticks around is that he wants to. And men are notorious for throwing out women. Now I know both men and women enough to understand you don't even believe me. So think for yourself, what will happen if hypothetically your husband just decides he wants someone else. How will you stop him from having to take on 100% of the family you made together? How will you stop him from leaving you to now carry all of it yourself? THIS is why women stopped marrying.

Everything is cheaper when you are two. Scandinavia is the cheapest place to have kids.

Marriage can lead to better wealth indeed but usually this isn’t the case because trust and cooperation is nearly impossible to todays relationship landscape .
I blame the hypergamy of women and the greed and weakness of men .
why get married if you are not financially stable and secure?
I’m of the perspective that marriage and romantic relationships just aren’t worth the trouble. Getting in a relationship is like playing Russian roulette.
The segment around 11:45 is something very relatable as an American woman as well. To survive as an adult in our society and be comfortable your have to be educated and successful, so we worked hard…that’s makes our standards for a partner a lot higher to give all that hard work up or just makes us give up on the dreams of children and a family.
You will give up something. Just make sure you are clear on your decision, because no one will come save you once it’s decided.
That’s why marriage contract must have expiration date and subject for renewal if both parties agreed. This would help to boost back the conventional marriage we’ve been practicing before.
Excellent idea 👍
@carlossunga2271 before what?
Or people who feel that way can just remain single.
I've always felt this way as well, marriage should have short cycles, expiration dates, contractual obligations & clauses, otherwise it's just 2 people trapped in their self-delusions
This is super bad for the kids though. Kids want their parents committed for life, not to have marriage treated like a car lease.

I see marriage as tied to religion, the state, and heteronormative traditions that oppress women. And then there's the stress of coordinating a wedding. No thanks.
100%, I agree and that's the life I would ideally want, even with potential kids involved but the government shouldn't have any say in my family and how my partner and I decide to work things out unless there's actual criminal activities going on like physical abuse or scamming/theft.

Were they interested in you? You'll never know, because you never asked! Never even sowed that seed of possibility in their mind. They probably assumed you were not interested anyways BECAUSE you never made it clear. They spend 5 years talking to you... because they value you as a friend.
In addition, if this were to suddenly happen the economy would completely meltdown because this consumption has been built into the system. The only other option is for people to work 80 hours per week and have others raise your kids which sounds absolutely miserable.
@@MichaelRodriguez-ur6bu That's a Good point.

You have money…it works because you have money.
@fvalentine25 Exactly. Our arrangement is relatively privileged, I know most couples wouldn't be able to do this.

And even that division of responsibilities, YOU are actually doing 95% and hes only doing 5%, againz perfect formula for him to walk away.
That means the only reason he sticks around is that he wants to. And men are notorious for throwing out women.
