Jason Plato and Tiff Needell were professionnal race drivers, they both have a really good racing pedigree, so I think they showed the potential of those cars pretty well
you are totally right man. Prejudices do not belong here. Anyone can beat anyone at times. But its not number the whole thing. For me most important is tha feeling!
I've done a bit of research, and as it looked as though they were racing at silverstone, hence the banners, those laptimes were 1.26 mins and the record for that track is 1.18 something in a F1 car!
One other thing... the 135i really has a 404hp engine, detuned to 300. For around $2500 you can have your BMW dealer dial it up for you without affecting the factory warranty. Add a $700 4" down pipe, and your in the mid-11s through the quarter mile and the mid-to-high 3s to 60. Bottom line: DO NOT race a 135i, anything could be hiding under that hood.
Howie262,I agree with what you say, but remember - until the Boxster saved it - Porsche was heading for financial ruin. (Now the most profitable car company in the world, with its group technology used in cars like the Audi, Buggati & Lambo.) McLaren F1's top speed was 240mph(384kph); Enzo,218mph(349kph);Carrera GT - developed last - 205mph (328kph).. Yes,Porsche held back. (We could have had a Carrera GT Turbo) GTR developed to be quicker than the 3.6litre 997turbo; wait for the 3.8l 998tt!
One thing I don't like about fifth gear car comparisons is that there is a big difference in the driver's skills. In top gear for example the Stig does all the power lap times so the car is the only variable.
The n54 engine in that 135i has such low lag that it pretty much eliminates that preference...that said a n54 will overheat while the Cayman keeps going. I own a 335i coupe with Juice Box 3 tune.
I've got a Cayman and a colleague at work has a 135i. The BMW is sporty and a hell of a car no doubt, but it's still a BMW - different segment. I got the Cayman because of the handling and mid-engine.. yes it could do with some more HP, but Porsche was being careful not to shoot themselves in the foot and step into 911's land. I love my Cayman and it's a wonderful machine, and a HELL of a looker with 19! wheels ;-) and btw.. ppl dont turn around to check my friend's BM..
agreed 100%, japaneese can still make some astonishing cars like the Evo and Skyline. I still prefer german interior quality matched with mind boggling engine performance. Audi is my all time favourite, followed by BMW.
sorry im wrong, he said its a 3 liter engine, but he did say twin turbo. i'm actually debating on which one to buy, that's why i was concerned. im leaning towards the cayman though because i love the interior, and it's handling can't be beaten!
That's because they don't want the 135i to make more power than the M3. With a simple ECU reflash, you can extract 400+ HP from that twin turbo engine.
question? why didnt you put the cayman S up against the 135...seems like it would have been a little bit more even eh? orr do the 125 vs the cayman... you cant do top of the line series vs intro class...
Doesn't really look like an automatic to me. No paddles on the wheel (optional though) and he seems to be moving his left leg after the lap around the track when he shifts. Also, I drove the 135i today and the tiptronic transmission doesn't have that much throw in the manumatic mode.
is the british spec bimmer different from the american spec? because im looking at bmw's web site, and they say that it has one turbo and a 3.0L straight 6, i could have sworn that in part one of this review, that they said it has a 3.5L and two turbos?
@akburst510 Do you? Did you get a aftermarket intercooler for the boost/lb increase? If you did then you would know it wouldn't overheat. What about exhaust/downpipe to give the turbo some extra breathing?
I really like the cayman, but here in the US a cayman is $15K more than a 135i, the 135i has free service, can seat four, yadda yadda. Plus you can put a dinan chip in the 135i and get 380hp and 420lb-ft and still preserve your warranty.
It wouldnt, you have to take Porsche's factory times with a pinch of salt. For instance Autocar tested a new Boxster S at 4.1 seconds to 60, 10.5 to 100, much faster than its book speed. Some magazing did a road test of the new 997 Turbo S, 2.7 seconds to 60mph, faster than the Veyron. Cayman S will do 0-60 in around 4.3-4.6 seconds.
Exactly! YOu know EXACTLY what you're talking about. Neither of the cars is better or worse.. they're different. Both cars have their own special worth :) People always want to hear what they have is best.. but they shouldn't :P
@Yanp87 I remember Top Gear's report on the Cayman. It's suspiciously placed right in the middle of the Boxster and 911 in every way, power, performance, price etc. They didn't make it as fast as it could be on purpose.
where do you get that idea? go on autotrader and look some up, I've found some great deals (low 20's, with 25-30k miles) where the car comes with all maintenance records and has been very well maintained and driven by old people.
The 1-series is ok for me but all im asking why did they needed a twin turbo to bring out 300bhp? the Mugen type RR could bring 240bhp on a 4 cylinder NA engine, couldnt BMW bring 300bhp on a straight 6 with out a turbo? the M3 and M5 arent turbos so why?
Actually I think they got it wrong! BMW's compettitor for the cayman is not the 135i, but the Z4 Coupe 3.0si. That said, in either case I'd choose the BMW, not just because they're quicker, but because I dont like the way the cayman looks. Rather have a Boxter than a Cayman, But rather have a Z4 than a Boxter.
@787Bisurdaddy I could hardly believe that BMW would make a 135i without a manual option, but I wasn't sure. So I went to the BMW website to check it out. Sure enough, there IS a traditional manual option with the ever nice clutch pedal :) There is also a 7 speed double clutch tranny with paddle shifters... I'd say they have their bases covered.
@Kaisar It's not bogus because I said so, it's bogus for the reasons I stated. They used two different drivers. They tried to prove the BMW is faster by using two different drivers? And racing both cars at the same time? It would be better to use multiple skilled drivers and average the lap tips. But that wouldn't be as entertaining, and this is an entertainment show. Also, you do realize I'm a BMW fan that called the BMW win bogus, right? It's not like I'm basing this on bias :)
@CrapDot45 That's a matter of taste. I happen to like the BMW more. The Porsche, while beautiful, looks typical, the BMW in the other hand has a real cool, laid back look.
They used the fully equipped 1 series against the base Cayman because Cayman's so expensive it's the only way to close the price gap. It's fair because the fully equipped 1 series is still cheaper than the base Cayman.
err... Actually yeah, the turbos arent "maxed out" at 12 pounds. they are medium framed turbos capable of probably 20 pounds. 10.0-1 isnt that high, and with high octane fuel(93 at least), and a decent tune, it would hold 400hp just fine. now, 400Whp is a different story.
He said he wasn't getting the most out of his Cayman on that loop which indicates he could have gotten a significantly better time if he were taking it more seriously than he was..
If anyone's racing a car they'll strip it back to the shell anyway and fit things like an LSD, different suspension etc. The LSD will just be one of many mods they'd probably make. As sold it's a road car with maybe the odd track day in mind, which is what 99% of buyers will do.
The BMW is certainly the more practical car, and for every day use, it'd be hard not to pick it over the Porsche. However, the Porsche looks better, drives better, and is more fun to drive, so despite the cost difference, I'd have a hard time choosing the Bimmer over it. This particular Bimmer, however, is lacking something that the Porsche has, something which excludes the Bimmer as an option for me: a gear shifter. I'll take a manual with a clutch pedal, thanks.
They should have included the new 313hp Nissan 350z in this test..thats a nice handling car. I reckon the cayman is much harder to drive quickly than the bmw, if Tiff had concentrated a bit more then it could possibly be quicker than the 135i round the track. The mid-engine layout does however mean its twitchier on the limit. Both very nice cars but I guess you cant ignore the bmw price differential...or you could and just get a used boxster s which is awsome btw :)
Fifth Gear producer 1: "How about we do a test on handling dynamics for these two cars? No?" Fifth Gear producer 2: "No, let's just do a slalom test and who can make the most smoke on a drift instead; and we'll use different drivers with entirely different styles!" What a joke. A true comparo would show a mid-engine weezer out-handling a torquey front engine any day. As an analogy, think a Corvette vs an Elise. I love the Bimmer, but the Cayman outhandles it hands down.
Point taken. By race though I guess you mean track days? For actual racing the car would be heavily modified with LSD etc anyway, not to mention grippier tyres which might make the LSD redundant anyway. For track days outright pace is less important than driving enjoyment, but I suppose it's a matter of opinion - having driven both these cars a fair amount I'd take both without the added dynamic complication of an LSD, but I can understand someone who might want an LSD also.
DTHPRF66, your comment has a major flaw. ok, let's say we are comparing M3 vs Civic but then the M3 is cheaper than Civic. Now which one is better by all means how can you say "throw money out." The main reason why cayman is more expensive is because of Porsche's brand value. But so is BMW, wanna speak pure bang for the buck? how about mitsubishi Evo Lancer? This sort of question has been around for decades. it's all about your personal taste.
I'm surprised they didn't mention the Porsche's variable ratio steering, which is awful. IMHO the Cayman is the clear winner, but the steering completely ruins it.
Why would you compare the new M3 with these to cars. M3 would spank them both. Try comparing the new M w/ the Bez. C63 and the RS4. Now that's a challenge worth looking at. You can check it out on one of the topgear videos.
i think these guys are out of their minds. if you actually test drive the 350z you'll notice that the weight bogs it down and it doesn't feel like a 306 hp car. In fact, the 0-60 time is 5.6 - 6.0 seconds. i'd go with the bmw everytime, here's why. quickest of the four, best handling of the four, bmw warranty. those are objective.
I doubt they will as any more power and it would start to tread on the M3s territory. Funny though, cos originally they said there would be no 6 cylinder 1-Series, as it may steal sale form the 3-Series! Now look what we have!!!
The Cayman in this video wasn't an S. Nor did it have the 19" wheels. There are lots of options you mentioned there that can't be verified are on the car in the vid.
that's just a load of twaddle i'm afraid. in that case i'm going to buy a zonda 760 RS because although it costs more than i will ever probably earn in a lifetime, it will always be worth a lot so it doesn't matter how much it costs new...
@moselyliver stop taking it so seriously, these are two entirely diffrent cars. like jason pointed out in the video, the 1 series is a small saloon which happens to have a big engine under the bonnet while the porsche was designed to be a sportscar....end of ;)
I'm no very happy with the results, but you have to recognize that BMW 135i is a brilliant little car, I'm not a big fan of the Cayman, but I think he can do better, how can we solve this, easy, give them to The Stig! Nice vid though. TG test them better
What a stupid comment. A Cayman handles better than a Veyron, but a Veyron is still quicker round a track. A top fuel dragster can hardly turn around a bend, but with 8000bhp I bet it will still beat it. The BMW had 60bhp more than the Cayman, 25% more power.
the 2.7 is already a shit load more than the bmw. Granted, the S is a fucking lovely car, with almost enough power to be fun, but people choosing a car aren't gonna be weighing up a 135 and a cayman S. You'd be putting down about half again
I don't really agree with that. These are professional drivers, & so is The Stig. Stig might be a very good test driver, but nobody knows who he really is. Besides, he doesn't give comments...you can't barely hear any word from him. I believe these guy can test any car as good as the Stig.
Yeah the BMW kicked ass! Tiff says that BMW has caught up with Porsche but the new M3 can beat the crap out of the 2 caymans and some 911s and why did he get the 2.7ltr version, why not the 3.4 S?
I used to be a HUGE Top Gear fan. But I enjoy the boys on 5th a lot more now. This is pure auto entertainment.
With greetings from Iran
Jason Plato and Tiff Needell were professionnal race drivers, they both have a really good racing pedigree, so I think they showed the potential of those cars pretty well
you are totally right man. Prejudices do not belong here. Anyone can beat anyone at times. But its not number the whole thing. For me most important is tha feeling!
yes it may be faster but it would take away the racing sensation: in my opinion shifting gear manually is an essential part of driving a sportscar.
I've done a bit of research, and as it looked as though they were racing at silverstone, hence the banners, those laptimes were 1.26 mins and the record for that track is 1.18 something in a F1 car!

Price points...the 245 hp Cayman still cost 6K in UK pounds more than the Beamer, so comparing to the 295 horse would have been unfair imo
cayman s, 3.4 litre engine.
drove on last week.
beautiful to drive.
and you'd get more skirt than if you owned a beamer !
agreed 100%, japaneese can still make some astonishing cars like the Evo and Skyline. I still prefer german interior quality matched with mind boggling engine performance. Audi is my all time favourite, followed by BMW.
depends where you live, Porsche and BMW in Australia are really expensive, BMW 135i ~$70k, Porsche Cayman ~$120k
sorry im wrong, he said its a 3 liter engine, but he did say twin turbo.
i'm actually debating on which one to buy, that's why i was concerned. im leaning towards the cayman though because i love the interior, and it's handling can't be beaten!
That's because they don't want the 135i to make more power than the M3. With a simple ECU reflash, you can extract 400+ HP from that twin turbo engine.
yep, I would have to agree. This particular porsche looks great. I like BNW's, but, something is off with this one. IMHO as well. :)
Its a 3.0L inline 6, and the comparisons are based on price, and car class, the Cayman is already 12grand more then the 135.
question? why didnt you put the cayman S up against the 135...seems like it would have been a little bit more even eh? orr do the 125 vs the cayman... you cant do top of the line series vs intro class...
you can get it added on. its an option.
Doesn't really look like an automatic to me. No paddles on the wheel (optional though) and he seems to be moving his left leg after the lap around the track when he shifts. Also, I drove the 135i today and the tiptronic transmission doesn't have that much throw in the manumatic mode.

J.P is a grand touring racer
the guy driving the porsche is a very good driver.
@akburst510
Do you? Did you get a aftermarket intercooler for the boost/lb increase? If you did then you would know it wouldn't overheat. What about exhaust/downpipe to give the turbo some extra breathing?
The baby is capable of many things u can think of.
I really like the cayman, but here in the US a cayman is $15K more than a 135i, the 135i has free service, can seat four, yadda yadda. Plus you can put a dinan chip in the 135i and get 380hp and 420lb-ft and still preserve your warranty.
You must be confused on the Cayman. They are only sold in RWD. The 911s (996 and 997) are available in AWD if you buy the Carrera4/S or the Turbo.
It wouldnt, you have to take Porsche's factory times with a pinch of salt. For instance Autocar tested a new Boxster S at 4.1 seconds to 60, 10.5 to 100, much faster than its book speed. @xaviergroup09 i like both nissan and porsche but hey what about a nissan skyline vs the cayman ? :P
Does the 135i have automatic transmission? Why would you want that in a sportscar?
You can see and hear him shift right after he finishes the race.
That poor Cayman was screaming for mercy... GOOD GOD downshift later, man! You'll trash the motor!
I own a new Cayman 2.7 and above 4500RPM it loved to scream and surprisingly punches your spine ;),it loves to slide especially with the optional LSD.
The 1-series is ok for me but all im asking why did they needed a twin turbo to bring out 300bhp? the Mugen type RR could bring 240bhp on a 4 cylinder NA engine, couldnt BMW bring 300bhp on a straight 6 with out a turbo? the M3 and M5 arent turbos so why?

bolpan you hit the nail on the head there; both countries make some great cars, but German interior design and quality is far ahead.
Is that silverstone short or what?
The BMW is certainly the more practical car, and for every day use, it'd be hard not to pick it over the Porsche. DAMN, America. We don't get that option. I forgot about it, thanks for the correction! MY B!

alright... you try and buy a ZR1 or even a GTR for 70... that's the MSRP... but dealerships go on market price... the 08 ZO6 is at 83k right now...
Vishnu stage 3?
Err Cayman S starts at £45k, £15k more than the 135i. You'd be better comparing it to the M3 (£51k) which it would do nothing short of whimper at.
DTHPRF66, your comment has a major flaw.
ok, let's say we are comparing M3 vs Civic
but then the M3 is cheaper than Civic. Now which one is better by all means how can you say "throw money out."
The main reason why cayman is more expensive is because of Porsche's brand value.

OOOOOOO.... thats gonna my new ride sooooon... : )
I went to the porsche page and ran through fast i got the price up to 113,000 you prob didnt go through the engine and interior options list.
i think these guys are out of their minds. if you actually test drive the 350z you'll notice that the weight bogs it down and it doesn't feel like a 306 hp car.
Yeah, but it also keeps its value, whereas the BMW will be worthless or disposed off when it gets too old.
Why would you want a 125i if there is a 135i ?
der. it's the drivers. Switch the drivers - switch the results.
Porsche has the best quality in the business.
@Nemo13535
NA > Turbo
Track wise at least.
$8,000 less...If you spent $8,000 in upgrades on the Bimmer it wouldn't even be a fair comparison anymore.
biggest difference is you drop 1g on the bmw and gain ~80hp and ~100 torque. Then it wouldn't even be close around the track.
The Cayman S would take the 135i. But then again if it had AWD and a stiffer suspension it would probably hold its own.
Where is the drag race? At least Top Gear would give it the old straight line test.
I'm not sure it's necessary to be honest in a mid engined 300bhp car. Mind you, it's mainly driving pleasure I'm after, not speed.
I like it.
The reason the BMW needs that much power is because it's way heavier
the Cayman need to be compared with the lighter Z4 Coupe
wow....1. thats a 135i and 2. how do hell do you think "if i didnt saw" is correct at all...?
you may be paying for the bmw badge but, you sure as hell are paying more for the porsche badge haha
@moselyliver
stop taking it so seriously, these are two entirely diffrent cars. like jason pointed out in the video, the 1 series is a small saloon which happens to have a big engine under the bonnet while the porsche was designed to be a sportscar....end of ;)
BMW forever. I sure hope the BMW 135tii will hit the streets !! I'd sell my mother for one :)
I'm no very happy with the results, but you have to recognize that BMW 135i is a brilliant little car, I'm not a big fan of the Cayman, but I think he can do better, how can we solve this, easy, give them to The Stig! Nice vid though. TG test them better
It is an electronic diff which tries to be LSD but s not.
its was for 30k price thats why
but the problem is they should have taken the cayman s because its prefomance is closer to the BMWs. it would be more fair for the cayman.
What a stupid comment. A Cayman handles better than a Veyron, but a Veyron is still quicker round a track. A top fuel dragster can hardly turn around a bend, but with 8000bhp I bet it will still beat it.
The BMW had 60bhp more than the Cayman, 25% more power.
everyone says fifth gear is too boring so they try to mix things up a bit.
that BMW was 6000std Poundsss cheeeperr ^^ LMAO
the 2.7 is already a shit load more than the bmw.
Tiff says that BMW has caught up with Porsche but the new M3 can beat the crap out of the 2 caymans and some 911s and why did he get the 2.7ltr version, why not the 3.4 S?
cause it is the 2002, but newer :p
yeah, that really happened
r56mini, Plato is a BTCC champion and the 135i did beat the cayman if you were watching..
Grunt and it means torque.
There is no 125i 1 series, its 128i, 135i or 1M.
thats not in the same class bro but what about a veyron vs gtr
I think the price is pretty irrelevant, as in 10 years time, that Cayman will still be worth more than 6k more than the BMW.
