  • Filipinos have been pointing using their mouths for millennia, or so we think. When did it all begin? Is there a specific technique to doing it? Most importantly, why did it come to be in the first place? Let's find out together on this episode of 'But Y Tho?'

Well as a Filipino, I had a different awakening about the origin of 'mouth pointing' in the Filipino culture. When you pass by some dark alley or places we have to be careful, It is said that pointing your hands is disrespectful so it was like a precaution for Filipinos to point using the mouth when pointing to not show disrespect to the elementals.

Yeah same, I remember being told that you can't point at things because superstition in dwendes or other mythological creatures that they might think you're pointing at them and might curse you or something like that.

Interesting. In America we "point" with our eyes or a slight head nod if trying to discretely "point" to something

My family is from Northeastern Brazil and they do that too! The difference is that they not just do it for pointing but also for making fun of others. Like when someone says something that isn't true or something stupid, you do this with your mouth too.

  • @eki1

We Yoruba in Nigeria do the same. We believe it's not morally correct to point fingers to indicate the position of persons in discussion, especially when it's something discreet, so we use the mouth to indicate the position of the person or thing. Lol.
Sometimes, as answers or reaction to a question, when raised up sharply, it means, it's a lie or I don't believe it. When the upper lip touches the nose, 'total lie or fantasy, it's fake'.
When both lips are compressed together and shot forward, it means, 'uhn, let me think about it, it could be true, it's worth thinking about". Many others anyways.

Obviously it could just be "linear culture", like pyramids, but it kinda seems like the countries with heavy Spanish influence are far nore likely to do this, so it would be interesting to know, did/do the spaniards do this too?

For me I dont think so, ang mga Filipino naman pinapahalagahan naman nila ang time, siguro kaya laging nale-late kasi laging traffic, mainit at madaling ma-haggard. Yung Filipino time masyado lang syang ginawang katatawanan kaya in-accept nalang ng mga Pinoy na nature nila yun when in fact the surroundings makes it harder for us to move quicker. Also the system in the Philippines sobrang bagaaaal. Laging may pila. So ang nangyari mabagal rin mga Pilipino kumilos. Anyway, my interpretations lang naman.

on a pure historical basis, the guy explaining about how it's rude to be pointing kinda gives an answer. Our ancestors probably worshipped or at least believed that everything had a soul. From trees, tools and maybe even the air itself. There is a concept that pointing with your fingers to a stranger is a sign of disrespect and that's human to human interaction. So I guess to avoid angering spirits that live within nature (diwata or anito) people would use their mouths instead.
This thing of not using your fingers to point to a direction is especially prevalent in rural areas where there's lots of mysticism and people are more likely to believe in the supernatural. You get warned by locals to avoid pointing your fingers to a certain area where they believe something supernatural exist like a really old tree, a thick jungle, and even anthills.

My explanation was always that you could never really be discreet in talking smack when you used your hands, too obvious. Point to an asshole giving you business is too rude, it says something about you, snouting's discreet, it's not something too many people pick up on unless they're paranoid or know what to look for. Filipino culture isn't about being direct, it's about being nice, and even when you hate someone there's still a courtesy to follow, else everyone else sees ya as "that guy." Always how I saw it, at least
