As a Linguistics major, this is a SUPER cool video. Clicks are (arguably) the most difficult phonetic sound in the world. They're also some of the most rare, with only around 24-38 languages left with these sounds.
The history of language is fascinating to me. Just to think about the geniuses who came up with it all. Otherwise we'd all still be grunting at each other.
I don't have any formal education on language, but I've always been interested in words and origins, of accents and how language travels and evolves. Idk how to say it, but it seems we use the same sound, yet it is much more subdued.
First accent. A brand has a lizard 🦎. Do you know why? I also don't know. One of our very respected elder told us the language was given to us by the people who came to earth from the sky(heavens) , they had reptile (lizards)faces very ugly yet very kind hearted.. Zulu means heaven or sky. Hence the Zulu people they long believed unkulunkulu(the greatest of them greats) came from the sky. I read in the Zulu book where they mentioned 30+ words that sounded very similar to Greek and Latin, guess what? Zulus never mixed or even met people speaking Latin and Greek . Never even in the past. How did it happen that Zulus have similar words to Latin and Greek?
Thats crazy how fluently he can make those sounds even during english, like he has 2 mouths that can talk simultaniously ,one in english and one in native.
I can do that too, I can speak both Romanian and English at the same time with their own accents. Anyone can do it with enough practice, but this man is just amazing.
When I was younger, there was a clip on the news of Saddam writing something (it looked like he was making notes on a pad, rather than signing a document) and of course, he was writing right to left, in 'Arabic'... My mum said ''Isn't he clever, writing like that,'' I said ''Why? He's been writing like that all his life, that's how they write...'' I was just listening to a podcast, where it said that some Ukrainian minister had written one word ''calm down'', and the American host who had been reading the article, then had to add ''Well that's two words...'' but the thought occurred to me: What if it is only one word in Ukrainian, like 'tranquilo' means 'calm down'...? So, I went to Deepl translator, typed 'calm down', and selected Ukrainian, and, although I can't read Cyrillic, yes, that's right, it was one word (of about 8-10 letters) Confirmed my initial intuition, and my theory that some people really can't think outside the box of their own experience, and forget that if an article is translated from one language to another, things may not match up 100% correctly, and that some things do 'get lost in translation' 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ Learn languages, it'll open your mind to new possibilities 👍👍👍👍 ''Words build bridges into unexplored regions'' - A.H. (an allegedly failed painter from Austria)
I went to college with a guy from part of Botswana who would get drunk and completely forget English. He said he was a bushman and while drunk spoke the language of his childhood. It was absolutely awesome!
I took a South African history course in university. The professor explained about the clicks the Khoisan use in their language and tried to emulate it but said he was doing a poor job. This is the first time I've heard a native speaker and now I see why it is so difficult to emulate. Excellent explanation!
Yes, a very interesting video Indeed. Are there any other cultures in the world that use similar phonetics in language? Did they mention smthing during the course?? This is the first time i come across such a language phenomenon.
I guess not really much! For the most Cultures is sometimes used without a word for a special emotional expression. Cannot write an example cause its not existent in the Text leanguage! But i guess everybody know the X (like in this vid) is expression something if accept something we are not like.
I spent 10 years in South Africa and as an English speaking person this is some of the linguistic differences I really needed to understand. Thank you.
@user-mb4bx9re9e That wasn't the reason I was there. I married a South African man and wanted to experience the country, it wasn't that it was the safe choice as an outsider. I would have loved to visit more of Africa but unfortunately we could not afford to travel.

What a fantastic video - the voice, examples in english, the simple yet comprehensive information.... Thanks for making this.
Not only does this guy have a fantastic speaking voice, but he's also a gifted explainer. He made everything very clear and gave excellent examples every step of the way. That's not common.
I’d say not just entertainer, but an entertaining teacher which is a very rare gift and a very underappreciated talent and a much needed one at that, cheating not only the children but people of all ages all types of fact I didn’t know and love to know ❤️

I have been struggling with Zulu due to the clicks... it’s so wonderful to hear a native speaker explain them!
All the power to you! I found myself trying to click along with him and failing miserably haha. You’ll certainly overcome your struggles!
I've heard Trevor Noah (Comedian) explain his roots and language. He does the clicks also! Very interesting and difficult.

I can pronounce all those sounds separately, but the way he uses them fluently in the speech is incredible 😁😁
this! ive been sitting here trying to say the words Canada and Quebec with clicks for the past five minutes
Same. Saying them individually was easy enough but actually using them in speech had me flustered up the wazoo
@@redneckrambo9626 I was so confident going into it too LOL I humbled myself very quickly
My father married a Zulu woman when i was about 12 years old. We moved to RSA and i got to live there for about 5 years. I was never fluent in Zulu but i was able to ask basic questions and understand a lot of basic stuff. I passed Zulu at an 8th grade lever. I think because i was learning the language at a young age i was and still am able to make the sounds in the middle of the words. It is still funny to hear my dad say Zulu words completely wrong lol. He was never able to use the clicks in the middle of the words. I think learning at a young age is pretty important for this kind of stuff.
P.S. i am a basic ass American white boy so its kind of funny to see peoples reactions in RSA when i would start speaking Zulu to them. Now im 36 and i havent been back to RSA in about 18 years. i miss it.

The Khoisan peeps have even more clicks - about 20x - from Botswana/Namibia and maybe also SA.
Very true. That would be really interesting.
Holy shit...That was my first thought!
Why? Africa and South/ central America are two very different places.
Don’t forget Popocatépetl.
Literature major here and I second that
I don't have any formal education on language, but I've always been interested in words and origins, of accents and how language travels and evolves.
@@AllOuttaBubblegum123 everyone came up with language they sort of evolved like civilisation

Thats crazy how fluently he can make those sounds even during english, like he has 2 mouths that can talk simultaniously ,one in english and one in native.
I can do that too, I can speak both Romanian and English at the same time with their own accents. Anyone can do it with enough practice, but this man is just amazing.
Anyone speaking several languages does that, I am Russian who speaks English and Italian
When I was younger, there was a clip on the news of Saddam writing something (it looked like he was making notes on a pad, rather than signing a document) and of course, he was writing right to left, in 'Arabic'... My mum said ''Isn't he clever, writing like that,'' I said ''Why? He's been writing like that all his life, that's how they write...''
I was just listening to a podcast, where it said that some Ukrainian minister had written one word ''calm down'', and the American host who had been reading the article, then had to add ''Well that's two words...'' but the thought occurred to me: What if it is only one word in Ukrainian, like 'tranquilo' means 'calm down'...? So, I went to Deepl translator, typed 'calm down', and selected Ukrainian, and, although I can't read Cyrillic, yes, that's right, it was one word (of about 8-10 letters) Confirmed my initial intuition, and my theory that some people really can't think outside the box of their own experience, and forget that if an article is translated from one language to another, things may not match up 100% correctly, and that some things do 'get lost in translation' 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
