I find this game so funny, their "Unique gameplay idea" of having mobile units on a board with a leader unit they had initially was just completely ripped from an indie card game called Duelyst released the year prior. I've never heard anyone else mention Duelyst but it was a really fun card game that sadly closed down a few years after launch, but their USP of having a board & carddeck combo game was their idea before SMITE Tactics so... Even more stolen content from Hi-Rez, funny
I agree with most parts in this video, but isn't using assets from Smite the whole point? It's essentially taking Battle Ground of the Gods with the depictions players love from Smite. Like if I was going to play another hirez game that had the theme battle ground of the gods, I would want the same personalities and style as the gods I fell in love with from Smite. More voice lines and things like that would be awesome though. Isn't that what Riot did with Team fight Tactics?
Yeah. But I guess it's only an issue if it's Hi Rez doing it. This type of development happens in literally any studio that hosts two games set in the same universe. There's literally no point in hiring a 3D Artist to remodel every god from SMITE just so you can say it's an original model cause the user would not even be able to see a visual change since if you do introduce visual changes you're now straying away from the game HOTG was build upon, SMITE. The SMITE players wouldn't identify with new 3D models of gods they knew to be depicted in different ways previously.
Isn't it normal to reuse the same assets from SMITE in a game that is also set in the same universe and uses the same characters in the new game? I don't see a need to hire a 3D Artist to remodel every god made in SMITE just for the sake of saying it's now a original model. People wouldn't see the difference anyway and you can't visually alter the gods or you allante the previous fanbase who literally only played HOTG because it was set in SMITE universe. Other then that I think you raised some fairly good points, it's a shame Hi Rez wasn't able to get the game to be unique and tried to much to be like the others. Sadly this is something we will continue to see going forward from multiple other companies as well as like you mentioned development costs time and most companies that aren't the big triple A studio's aren't to keen on taking such risks and will instead opt to rip off and build upon existing frameworks. This goes much deeper as there are even AI Pathing/AI Behavior systems that are literally being ripped and built on, it does depend on the view of the beholder though. The game industry thrives on building on existing frameworks and so we shouldn't expect every game to be boldly unique, developers will always opt to work on something that existed prior as it is much easier to integrate and build onto it then develop from scratch with chance of soaring costs and no guarantee of success.
I feel like I'm in the minority of people that actually were saddened that this game is no longer playable, sure it had it's issues but there was something so fun about that game to me even if it was always against bots.
I remember this game. I played it when it was first release. Sure it had issues but I did kinda like the game until they ruined it like God why Hi Rez do you guys have to kill your own games🤦♂️.

Bellona release was the last nail on the coffin for this one. Charge cards + bellona was just 2 OP.
