Jungkook that’s how the show works. You can “keep” the home they renovate or put a down payment on another home which is usually stated to be covered by the increased equity in the home, something they make sure to tell you at the end of every show...
Mike Sharpelletti not on either coast. Maybe somewhere in the middle or rural or middle America, sure, but most of these shows (especially HGTV) are done in suburbs outside of major metros on the northern pacific, east coast, and to a lesser extent, wealthy suburbs in Canada. There’s not doing home renovations in Oklahoma or Nebraska, usually it’s upstate New York, Seattle, Vancouver, etc. Show me a home there for a large family for under 200K and I’ll buy it just to sell it.
Mike Sharpelletti Right but houses don’t cost 140k unfortunately. There’s other prices above 300K but you’re absolutely right. Especially living in Texas.
I'm a contractor in philly...I had those people contact me about them filming a project...They wanted me to pay for production cost, Because it would be "good exposure" and "advertising"...it was like 25K...I laughed in their faces...
godbluffvdgg And when the subcontractors arrive in their trucks and t-shirts with the company name on them, the show often blurs it out, so what kind of advertising would it be?
@@Lindzeeann2uuu Yeah, they're scammers...I despise TV to its last pixel...I would sooner walk naked with a sandwich sign up and down Broad street, than advertise on that box....:)
I would not buy any house that was flipped even if it wasn't for a TV show. They are in it for a quick buck and cut many corners to make the house look nice but that's all. It is only a matter of time for the lack of quality to show itself.
Remember, Room by Room, Gardening by the Yard, Home Time, etc ?? You actually learned how to do things that were affordable! Design on a Dime! I miss that kind of show...
@@heatherhoupt814 , NONE, that I know of! I guess those shows don't bring the revenue in these new ones do! I quite watching after a while. Got tired of young, first time buyers lamenting on HAVING to have hardwood flooring, granite countertops, SS appliances, 3/4 bedrooms, playroom, finished basement, luxury master bath and so on! Heck, I'm 64 and still haven't got all those things in my 3rd home, much less my first starter home as a newly wed!! How expectations in young people have changed!
I got to interview Shari from Room by Room (she’s awesome) and she talked about how they built everything themselves so they could actually teach the viewer how to do it, that’s a crazy amount of work for two people! She basically started HGTV, it’s not the same now for sure.
Love it or list it always asking for 100k and dont complete peoples wish list. Fixer upper & property brothers gut damn near the whole house with that kind of budget
Me too. I was always wondering why she spent so much more money than Fixer upper & property brothers do. Now I know why. I wonder why people keep falling for it.
Fixer Upper spends plenty - with your house costing $125,000 and your all in budget $300,000, leaves us $175,000 to do the what we just described to you in the house. So says Chip Gaines. They do not always do every room in the house. I always wonder about all the furnishings on these shows. Do they get to keep them?
brenda boudinot they dont get to keep most of the decor or furnishings unless they already owned them or bought them themselves. Most of the furniture and decor are just for staging. The homeowners can purchase them seperately if they want.
Fixer Upper uses their own crews and all their project are in the same general area in (Waco) Texas. I'm sure they get a lot of good deals for materials from businesses they work with on a regular basis. And everything I've read about Chip & Joanna is that they're extremely honest and humble; although it's TV so who knows.
My husband worked on a home in Sanibel Island, FL that was being renovated by HGTV for a show and he said everything is SO SCRIPTED! The hosts of the show literally only show up when it's time to film and they are gone soon after it's done. What you then have is a bunch of subcontractors just working on their own and there's really no one to act as General contractor to oversee the job. I would NEVER hire HGTV to do anything in my home.
Of course, who thinks the stars of the shows actually do any of the work other then what is shown on film? They are stars and don't want to get dirt on their hands. Come on man!
It's true. I was an assistant manager at a furniture store that they used for staging in Raleigh. They use local designers to come up with options and often times those designers relied on the furniture store to come up with design options on their own. The stores then "donated" the furniture to stage the house as "exposure" and then had to take back anything the home owner didn't agree with even if they kept the house. Whatever furniture they did keep was then purchased at a massive discount so after delivering and picking up from the house for free, the stores made no money and got almost zero exposure on the episode.
@@Jason2-legit I agree, even with the offer to be on the show I would never have agreed to give 140k to a production company to renovate for me. Just say you'll pay the contractor when the work is done like normal and let them film 🤣😂 they probably thought they were gonna get some badass upgrade to sell as an orphanage with designer quality being its tv. The gotters got got is all I see here.
Well in all fairness, I don't expect HGTV to bring the same contractor everywhere they go throughout the USA making sure they do a good job. They are going to hire local people that don't care but to get paid as the production packs up and moves on to the next house
That's because she doesn't actually do anything when the cameras aren't rolling. She wears work clothes and goes through the motions of handling tools only for the scenes you actually see then she's back in her capris or leggings and back in her Mercedes driving back to the hotel.
Exactly. She always finds out later that a wall is load bearing and will cost an extra 5 grand to remove. Any good contractor could tell you if a wall is bearing by spending 2 minutes in a house.
deloreanfan81 Uh. They never give her six figures and she always tells them what she can or cannot do with the money they are willing to pay. You can’t get a completely remodeled house for some of these people and I’ve literally heard them say their total budget is $35,000.
She's the Designer, not the contractor. Her job is to design what it's going to look like, then she delegates the work to the contractors. That's how it works.
Their house gets fixed up, while the guy looks for a new home for them. The owners decide to sell their renovated house and buy the new property or stay in their renovated house. Their renovated property goes up in value and if sold, the money might cover the cost of the new property. At least that's the premise. The owners will have to pay off their current mortgage plus the loan to fix up said property. They'll still be in eternal debt. How is this show successful? How do the producers manage to perpetuate this scam? It's a better question...
I was always under the impression that the show either pays a portion of the renovation cost, or offers a large discount on the renovation work. This would save the homeowners several thousand dollars, and if they sell, would net them even more on the sale of their old house.
To be fair, Texas seems to have a pretty cheap realestate market. And they also act as their own general contractor and realtor, so they save a lot of money there. But I agree with you, they seem to be able to do a 2k SQF house and fix it up pretty good for like 50k sometimes.
it's most the market. Waco area is pretty cheap, but there are also "unbelievable" fixer upper stories...like the properties they just "happen" to find and get for so much below list price...just isn't a believable scenario, even for Waco.
I'm a little sad that Chip and Joanna didn't renew their contact fir Fixer Upper. It's not what is being said in the news and stuff. It's because she's pregnant and doesn't want the baby to be on TV I bought a special edition HGTV magazine. And the interview them and announced that she would take time off and raise the baby like she did with the other ones.
P B but Knightdale or something. You guys commute to work regularly. I’m thinking driving from Wilson to Raleigh everyday for work is ok. 140k will get you a home in Wilson.
Their defense is so good. "We've done more than 250 renovations without any issues." Okay. There's evidence everywhere, but you claim you never did it before, so that means you didn't do it this time either. Imagine getting mugged at gunpoint by someone walking past you on the street, recording the whole thing, and then when the mugger gets caught they say "Obviously I didn't do it, since I previously walked past more than 250 people without any issues."
Yeah I don't even trust calling a contractor just to help us install a new door.. something tells me I would have half a roof and squishy carpet by the time they abscond with my $500 ..
Really? The contractor who did my master bathroom was awesome, and he swallowed the replacement cost when he ordered the wrong kind of cabinets for the vanity.
I've had multiple remodeling project done by local contractors over the years. The only one I ever had issues with was a drunken brick layer I hired to build a chimney. The chimney has stood for 45 years, crooked and bent as the day(s) it was built. This guy had me buy all the materials (doubt he could front the money) and took all the extra blocks and the truck load of sand - that was intended for my kids to play in.
Rich? Lol. No, that's just what people can afford when they paid attention in school instead of playing the victim. Taking out a $100,000 loan is normal. It's what you could have had if you weren't so pathetic. Me too btw.
@@harmonyjones8035 rich people aren't rich from school. the most school will do for you is give you a semi-comfortable job. rich people are born in a world of recourse and connections. dont fall under the illusion that any kid has the ability to be rich, that's not how America works. it wouldn't be a rat race if every rat had a chance.
And the products they use are cheap. Lighting, cabinets, no shelving sometimes, just open shelves to show off your mismatched, chipped, stained dishes? 🤓
I don't like the show and I find it odd that the production company makes money off the renovation from the home owners. It would seem the home owners would get a fee for featuring their home on the show. I understand the homeowners would pay for renovations but I do not think the production company should get a fee. They should get payment from the companies that advertise during the airing of the show.
Ill never forget this one. My wife was hooked on these shows. She was watching a bearing wall tear out to inlarge a room. They installed a glue lamb beam to carry the load of the wall upstairs. All glue lamb beams are stamped (TOP) to establish camber or crown. And sure enough when the camara shot looked up at the beam there was the stamp on the bottem of the beam. This was on national television. So they created a sag in the bearing wall above. Remarkable.
As a carpenter my dream is to get hired by one of these home improvement shows. My wife watches them and I cant believe the prices they claim things are costing them...she was watching fixer upper the other day and a house needed new handrail on the front porch, about 12 ft total. The cost was bid at $6,000 to build a new rail, out of treated lumber( to those who don't know, the actual material cost couldn't have been more than $300, and a knowledgeable builder would have it done in a few hours.) Imagine of you could go to work and make $2,000/hour, I told her if I could get as much as they get for their remodel jobs, I could retire after just a couple jobs. Either the costs of these jobs is exaggerated or they are inflated because it's for show. I could build whole new houses for what it is costing these people to remodel their living rooms.
I live in the Midwest. A woman moved here from California and kept trying to sell this basset sectional claiming she paid $6000. I took her down to the basset store, the same one for $2500 brand new. She was renting from my father and one day I went over to trim a pine that had gotten to large. She ran out there yelling wanting to see my arborist license. We got a lot of laughs but never again were we to rent to a Californian.
Because fewer people have any carpentry skills, they fall victim to outrageous prices. My elderly friend almost paid way too much for a super simple, short rail. When I told her the price was robbery, she found a guy to do it for a reasonable price.
The point is that is ASSUMED that they will have the best of the best and that the renovations are done super quickly, like the other HGTV shows. I think it's around a month whereas normally a project like that would take several months. They also imply, imply being the key word, so idk if it's true, that the realtor on the show, David helps you buy the home. (Meaning again, that it saves a substantial amount of time) I'm not defending the show by any means, I'm just saying that's what is advertised.
The whole “reading from a script”/“being told what to say and how to act” shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. There is no such thing as reality tv. It is all just for entertainment purposes and an effort to gain as many ratings as possible.
@CrazyWarriorCatLady I’ve been saying that for years about any show claiming to be a reality show, the only reality is that the show knows before they record the first episode(Survivor, Big Brother, etc..) who the final winner will be or in this case the losers!!!
I used to watch HGTV years ago, but they became crap TV. All about buying houses not DIY like they used to be. I do not even know what their content is anymore.
I miss the shows where they would go looking for houses to buy and would talk about specific fees, what getting a loan looked like, and showed them looking at more than 3 houses. And sometimes the people would end up not buying a house. it was more realistic.
What I want to know is what happened to the DIY HGTV craft type shows. Make a quilt, a rug, jewelry, stained glass, sewing clothing or home accessories, building a fire pit, a kid's gym set and landscaping. Where are the DIY shows that stop to tell you how to hang a door, install kitchen cabinets or a shower pan. All of these were shows that could spark interest in a new hobby or give you an idea if the contractor you hired new what he was doing. These shows would be much more useful. I don't need hours of House Beautiful results, I can get that plenty of other places.
+Karen Pennington Bob Vila type and DIY the big box stores weren't making the money they wanted out of those shows. So they pulled the plug. If you notice they are always running to one of the box stores. :(. Basically they don't want us fixing it ourselves.
Some of the old decorating shows did end up with some pretty horrific results. Even the newer home reno shows produce that. That John from the Cousins show seems to have fairly unrealistic ideas about how people function in a 'real' home & 'normal' tastes - everything doesn't need to end up looking like the latest in some 'designer trend'. (Trends are simply a way to part fools with their money, because they invariably end up being declared 'dated' by the same designers within a few yrs - half a dozen yrs ago everyone was tossing out or spray painting over anything made of brass, but suddenly now brass is a 'hot home decor trend' again.) That black house with the corrugated steel dormer and the silly wooden carport on which John insisted was one example - no wonder they had the homeowners do a nighttime reveal! Made the house look hugely 'contemporary' when the wife kept saying her style was more traditional. Also can't stand that one show where all the houses look alike due to the woman's constant use of her beloved 'shiplap' & her own more rustic style, regardless of what the homeowners say (& they are paying for the renovations on that show, too). If you notice, on every single HGTV show, the homeowners gush about how much they 'love' it. ALL of them? There has to be people who look at what's been done to their house & thinks OMG they've wrecked my house, & I paid them to do it! I'd bet a high percentage are down at the paint store the next day because they want to get rid of terrible color choices and hideous accent walls, or calling a contractor to put back walls these guys always rip out for their boring open floor plan concepts (& why do they do that when the homeowners keep repeating they have traditional style? traditional style means room definition!), or trying to return the cheap Ikea & Home Goods furnishings & accents to get money toward replacing them with things that will actually last more than a few yrs. There was a Cousins show where they were backpedaling after ripping out 2 walls to add pocket doors and half-walls with columns and a coffered dining room ceiling after finally remembering the people had traditional style sense. They all want to do the trendy stuff to the houses with which they play. Just once I'd like to see a reno that didn't involve tearing out walls, grey tiles, faux wood floors, ugly 'custom' light fixtures, brass accents, etc, ad nauseum.
Are you blind the unfinished floor, holes in the floor, the shotty concrete pour, semi-finished paint work Look at the final shot at the kitchen cabinet the whole cabinet has a gap I am a general contractor and for $140,000 they were scammed
That's exactly what I say about all these people come out and say they were sexually abused by celebrities they wanted to be with a celebrity they took the hush money they got sexually violated and now the money is gone they want to complain and sue. It the same principle it's just a different subject you wanted to be famous is the bottom line. They wanted to be on TV you got what you asked for but you didn't get what you expected that's how it always goes with victims.
Smullet90 I like that they keep spewing “for foster kids!” ????? Like that literally has nothing to do with anything at all ever lol a cheesy line to make people feel bad for them.
Lord. Does no one remember This Old House on PBS and Bob Villa?! They'd go in, quote how much the owner would have to put in and then the show would start. What began to happen, was good ol' Bob would tell the owners in the middle of it all, "Well, if you want it done right it's going to cost another $50-200 thousand more than the original estimate." Problem was, Bob began to do it to almost every owner on the show. You'd see these people, some going into serious debt fixing the house AT the price quoted, get punched in the gut while their house was in shambles and no way out but to go deeper in debt to get it done. Bob, was finally fired. The point is, you want your house fixed or work done, DON'T ask a television show. You want to be able to hold your contractors not only to their bid but oversee their work. Be able to check their standing with the BBB, any law suits etc. A reality tv show takes all of that away and has absolutely no concern if it's done right or not. This Old House was the only home fix show I ever watched. Then stopped as couple after couple would get that gut punch. I'd feel bad for them. (Both the show and Bob was sued by more than one home owner.) But hey, some people live to get screwed over. If you are one of those, call a reality tv show.
The BBB is, like most things these days, bought & paid for by the businesses from which it purports to 'protect' consumers. It's no longer the reliable indicator of a good business that it was 30-40 yrs ago.
Scarlet Ribbons yeah, like all things if there's money to be had, everyone has a price. That still leaves websites though that have companies ratings and complaints from real people. By the by, it was about 30yrs ago with the Bob Villa 'This Old House'. The overall sentiment is the same though. You want to pick your own contractors and be able to okay sub-contractors, along with being able to monitor the work being done.
You cannot always tell what is happening in areas you cannot see. You used the word "Quote" in your opening statement. Contractors cannot see what is going on in the walls without opening them up. I did a bathroom remodel several years ago and when the contractor opened up the wall there was severe termite damage. How could he or I know that. It ended up costing an extra $5,000 in materials and labor to rebuild the wall and re-install the plumbing pipes. Was your house built correctly in the first place? You cannot see drain pipe until you dig it up. I agree there are shoddy contractors out there.
***** No, your right you can't tell what's going on underneath the areas marked for repairs, improvements, remodle, and restoration. When referencing the old program with 'This Old House', we're talking about owners that weren't naive about what it would take or happen to get their homes remodeled or fixed. Problems arose when Bob wouldn't be told no and pressured home owners for ratings sake. One was in a middle of over a hundred thousand restoration, house jacked up to redo the foundation, and Bob came up with over seventy five thousand dollars more to "get the house restored right means it can't be done with cheap materials."?!?! This included improvements Bob thought the house should have from the original build that weren't included. And he did that more than once. (Bob became a bit of an ass when he began to get popular.) Anyone that has enough money to spend too fix their home, regardless of what it is, should be realistic and NOT just trust a reality television show to be above board. After all, when the works done they move on. Owners are left with the consequences.
***** yeah..., Bob didn't leave the show as much as he was forced to go. 'This Old House' was and is a popular show but Bob was bringing the ratings down and homeowners were filing lawsuits over his misrepresentation and overly aggressive tactics to get home owners to do what HE thought was best. I like the show better with Steve and Norm. Hell, I watched the show FOR Norms spots he was given. Great ideas, wonderful craftsman, and unpretentious.
I also wonder about the "open concept" that everyone always wants in these shows,so they can see their kids from the kitchen..Or so they can be with their guests while they cook..I grew up seeing my mom having everything ready when the guests arrived, never was she more than a few minutes in the kitchen after the guests had arrived. And she was so happy to have a door to close IF she needed to go to the kitchen to get something, she didn't want the guests to see the dirty dishes in the sink and whatever mess there was. I have continued the same way, kitchen is my hideaway,I love to be there even when I'm not making food, away from the tv-room and noice. I would never ever want my kitchen to be open to the livingroom..I love and need walls and doors!!
From what I can tell, "open concept" is a term that unscrupulous renovators and contractors use to persuade people who've always lived in tiny apartments to keep the same kitchen/living room concept in their house and to talk down about how stupid people are who built their houses with separate rooms for the kitchen and living room (what were they thinking). I hate open concept because I grew up in an open concept home long before it was fashionable and there was no privacy and the whole house always smelled like whatever it was my mom was cooking or burning. Like you, I love walls and doors too plus I like nice wide halls as well and don't consider it wasted space like a rarely used dining room usually is.
@@JohnFourtyTwo exactly, and I remember the cozy kitchen we had,and closing the door, doing homeworks there, listening to the radio, was so nice,an extra room!

Am I the only one who is tired of just all white homes every time someone "renovates" their home? Like white walls, white furniture, white decor. Come on, do something different!
I know someone who bought a super nice house in a good area that had really nice colorful walls (not like too bright or ugly colors, like pastels) and they repainted it to beige! Like, you spent nearly a million on a house but you want that house to look like every other house you’ve lived in? What’s the point of a house that looks nice on the outside when it has no personality on the inside. I know when I get a house I’ll be painting my walls all kinda colors, even if it’s paler colors
They generally do it for resale value. I’ve been told that, at least with paint, neutral colors sell better. You also don’t see much wallpaper anymore either.
l just love it when they renovate for families in very young children and then give them white couches. l'd love to see a follow up show a year later and what the renovations look like now after being lived in.
The whole concept of the show "Love It or List It" never made sense to me. I would never invest thousands of dollars into something I would sell. As my father in law would say: "Let the next guy worry about it."
All of these shows are unrealistic. I would have to say Trading Spaces was the worst because they made shiplap and barn doors appealing compared to the disasters they put out every week.

+Daners 424 The logical thing is to fix and replace what's worn out, but keep what's still functional. My house (well, it's not really a house, it's a duplex where I live in one side and rent out the other unit) had to be partially remodeled because some things were old, worn out, or not original. It was built in the 1950's. I saved money by keeping the 1950's look. I kept the knotty pine kitchen cabinets, because they were original and in great shape. The laminate countertop was in poor shape and not original, so I had my contractor install a laminate countertop with a linen print, which was popular in the 1950's and is still available today. Now I've got a nice, functional retro kitchen that was done at affordable price, rather than tearing out the vintage cabinets and putting in blah new cabinets with blah new trendy granite countertops. The bathroom was in terrible shape and nothing was salvageable, so I had it remodeled in 1950's style, so as to integrate it with the retro kitchen. I get tons of compliments from people who visit my duplex. And it was affordable to remodel, too, because I kept original features where possible. Anyway, the point of this story is that it's so stupid to get into debt because someone wants their house to resemble some overpriced houses they see on TV. It makes more sense to remodel a house around its original features. Or, don't remodel at all, if it looks good and is in good condition.
+Gabby Flores Those 1950's tract homes are everywhere. Hey, maybe one day you can buy one for yourself! They were so well made. My place is made of concrete block with stucco on the exterior. Even if there's a severe storm, you don't hear anything creak, because it's so solidly built. And my place is really unique. It's a duplex, with each side being 1,140 sq ft, and 3 bed/1 bath. Each side is the same size and layout of a typical 1950's ranch. It's like two L-shaped ranch houses stuck together to resemble a U-shaped ranch house. I bought it from Mr. and Mrs. Slumlord, who were selling it because they were divorcing. They put no care into it, letting it deteriorate. That's why I needed to have both sides partially remodeled. It's quite surprising that Mr. And Mrs. Slumlord put no money into it, given that it's located in an upper middle class suburb. Luckily I came along, since I appreciate 1950's houses, and gave it plenty of love. And the rent from the other side helps me pay my mortgage, too!
Someone was trying to pull a scam like this here in my town. I emailed them to ask about it. The wanted home owner to but $100k in materials and their unlicensed tv actors would do the work for free. And home owner had to pay for hotel to live in for 5 weeks or find somewhere to stay. Shows like this used to pay for everything from commercials and sponsors.
It’s still there. I can hear it although it is a bit more muted than the previous clip. If they are British but have been living in the USA for a while, then that is to be expected. I had a roommate who’s father was from London and although he still said typical British words like telly (tv) his accent became more Americanized to the point that i was disappointed when i met him and didn’t hear a thick accent. Even his British family still living in the UK said his accent changed. You tend to pick up more of your surroundings when you move and living in a new place for a significant amount of time.

The old home makeover show 'Extreme Makeover' is no longer around either because of the lawsuits as well. They scam people all the time for these shows.
I hate that show, I always thought people were getting a bum deal. I don't like getting railroaded and bullied into something I don't want. I think HGTV is not worth watching
Love it or List is fake; it's a way for homeowners to get a discount on a renovation as they do not move despite what the show's ending may appear. Production films two endings and then later on pics which one will air.
I hate this show! the way those two hosts argue and insult each other is stupid. who needs a show with all that contention and fighting!? it is literally the WORST show on tv.

August 2020 Update: They ultimately settled out of court, while the homeowners were able to sell the property for $570,000 in April 2017 after they only paid $335,000 in 2007. Nice little return on their investment, eh? The bad news is that the new owners then sold it for $500,000 in Dec 2017, while the new Owners after them only paid $479,000 in 2018. Phew.
Having watched this train wreck of a show, It is cringe worthly, I would NEVER trust the woman who acts as the Project Manager. What i've seen is a gross ineptitude and lack of any understanding of building and remodeling. She is clueless. I hope this couple wins the lawsuit and HGTV drops the show.
That show is NOT a train wreck. Hillary is a very intelligent and competent project manager with superb taste who always produces magnificent results. That couple who sued is probably a couple of kooks who expected far more than they got but were unwilling to pay for it.
Having been a PM in the construction industry the woman is NO PM. She is a designer. She is clueless about building anything including time requirements, material, and costs. the woman and the show is absolutely the most annoying thing on HGTV. Every show where she "acts as PM" always has cost over runs because she is clueless, in the industry if you don't estimate correctly and do not have contingencies budgeted, you lose your job. Job 1 in a whole house remodel is a thorough inspection and estimate of work, prior to bidding on the job. She wings it and it bites her and the client in the ass every time.
*Willy MacTavish* Wait a minute here, big boy. You seem to be a chauvinist who is threatened by a woman who works in the same industry as big macho YOU. She doesn't have to be skilled in all aspects of remodeling because she employs competent trusted tradesmen who are, as any good manager does. She is certainly NOT clueless. She is always keenly aware of time constraints, material and costs. Cost overruns occur because of unexpected problems or last minute changes on the part of the homeowners, not because of any fault of Hillary's. You must not have watched the show very often because she ALWAYS brings a trusted contractor with her to inspect the house, the work to be done, and an estimate of the costs. She does NOT wing it.
shadrach that's all them cookie cutter houses built on spec some are better than others but most are built as cheap as possible if you want a well constructed you have to hire a reputable custom home builder with no less than 20-25 years experience or build it yourself/be your own general contractor but that's a gamble if you don't work in the trades go with the home builder
*hoopenhanger* Hillary is not shallow or fake. She's an intelligent woman with amazing skill at home decorating, and produces beautiful results for her clients.
Tiger Cub and *Frank Quitely* "...shallow, fake and corrupt!" What an absolutely idiotic, stupid and FALSE thing to say about an American patriot like Hillary Clinton, who has devoted her life to helping people and public service. *Tiger* and *Frank* Please go FUCK yourselves... individually or together, or maybe invite DaddyT to join you. *H I L L A R Y . . . Bill and Hillary Clinton are American patriots who deserve respect for all the good they have done for this country, and have yet to do. Hillary's going to be a great president. When I read the ugly lies and stupid remarks people like you make it dumbfounds me. It truly AMAZES me how a reasonably intelligent person could support that damned stupid fool Donald Trump for President. But go ahead, vote for Trump and show the world what an ignorant FOOL you are.
This show is so suspect. They seem to need way more money for renovations than any other show on TV. Then they can literally NEVER do everything they say they are going to do. They are the only show that never finishes and never has enough money.
Exactly! What reputable contractor bids a job before s/he inspects the site to see if walls are load bearing, what kind of materials, plumbing, electric, HVAC etc it has?
Exactly! I thought the same thing. The reason this show is so expensive is because the production company pockets a big part of the renovation budget. In this case the production company got 55k of the 140k budget. That explains why it's so expensive on this show. Chip and Joanna Gaines could do better work for half the money. I can't for the life of me figure out what the homeowner gains by being on the show.
All "reality" tv shows are scripted. So in true reality, they are not reality. If you want to watch real reality, just watch families here on youtube. But I still love HGTV. Lots of fun ideas for your house.
Lol. Says the person pushing their family youtube channel. You don’t set up videos? Come up with subject matter beforehand? Coach your children about videos you’re about to do? That’s not reality then. Sorry...
If you want reality, UNPLUG THE CABLE as I did 14 years ago. Now my TV is used to play commercial-free DVDs from Redbox. [insert happy, contented sigh here] Now I'm finishing more of my projects on time and under budget.
I’ve always wondered why people would trust shows with 140k of their money. I feel like I could pay contractors and get all the features I would want for much much less... I would never trust random contractors hired by the show to do major work on my house.. nor would I trust a show with my money. That’s just crazy to me.
I hate this show to begin with, the two hosts are very annoying, she with her hoity toity accent. The guy seems to have a realtor's license that covers every state/location they're in. And the disaster that occurs in EVERY remodel. Give me a break. I've pretty much stopped watching HGTV Why is everyone Canadian? Is HGTV a Canadian company?
Have some common sense, people. Hoity toity accent? Perhaps you'd rather she speak 'murican english, and all programming come from 'murica. It's television; change the damn channel if you don't like something. It really is that simple.
My guess would be that they believed they would probably get top-notch professionals and workmanship, thinking that it would be better to deal with people who have a big name and reputation and are even going to showcase their work on television. In other words, they thought it would be 'safer.' Apparently, it didn't turn out that way, though.
Stop wishing and start working/saving. Do what most home owners do: sacrifice for years and years until you get your down payment. It's just the reality...
Some of these commenters act like ppl haven't searched for anything a day in their life. Property, houses, jobs whatever. I feel like if anyone can think of some sh, they'll find their way around. The only ppl trying to deter is just ppl just trying to keep others down. To cowardly take advantage of. Also, you really don't hafta be an economics major to figure out money flow from state to state. If u're getting paid more, you putting that same sh back out. Unless u live cheap, & save. Then get to where you're at. That would pretty much sum up the basic language. Unless your born rich. Then that means you just lived off mommy & daddy. Then just fueled whatever bs u got handed. In that case, obviously need not apply. I hate literal definitions tho. If the ppl think they're rich, let em think it 👆. .. That prob just means they're content with themselves. A lesson most ppl should damn learn about.
There's always someone who has it worse than you. It doesn't mean that you, or in this case they, don't have the right to have a problem with something. And my house cost less than their renovation budget and I still think they have the right to complain. It's their money that they are losing and they hoped to get the loan money back after selling their home. It takes money to make money.
Cheryl Haywood, I’m with you, I haven’t watch HGTV in years. I love having the old shows that actually did things on a budget and diy. There is just nothing that I want to see on there anymore. We can’t afford a $300,000 home so I sure don’t want to watch a show about $600,000 vacation homes.
On the other hand, when I tune into "My Lottery Dream Home," I want to live vicariously and see some amazing million dollar-plus homes, real fancy stuff....and instead they usually are looking at extremely affordable, boring homes. LOL.
WHY do people pay up front??? In California you are only allowed to collect 10% or $1000.00 whichever is less! After that you work out a pay schedule as work progresses. NEVER EVER PAY THE FULL AMOUNT IN ADVANCE!!!
I used to love this show but always wandered why the lady host was always saying how like “$140,000 is no where near enough for what you want! I’ll need more!” When that should be plenty for a huge renovation + addons. I always thought it was due to location, but now I see it’s probably because of all the cost for production 🤔
@ShookSaltShaker they did not even use the whole 140k. they say in the video the contractors used 85k and the production crew pocketed the rest. which sounds like theft to me because this couple were paying for the renovation...
Hold up, Wait!!!! You mean to tell me those people on that show have to actually put up there own money to get their houses renovated? I always thought for appearing on the show they renovated your house for free as long as you stayed within a agreed upon budget. What's the use of the show again if I have to pay my own renovation cost?
I am really shocked the tv company took $55,000. The rest doesn't surprise me. You would think the TV company's compensation would be that they get a project, free actors and a story to tell.
I would think the money came from the shows sponsors or the network. i understanding paying for the work but not the production. something seems fishy here.
That threw me for a second, too. It was weird he worded it that way. It's not relevant to viewers whether the money came from a loan or from their savings account. What's relevant is the homeowner's portion vs what the TV show contributed. Paying off whatever loans they have is their own personal business.
This seems to be normal in the house renovation market. My son's house was badly damaged in a house fire (condemned). Within hours a "home fire renovation" company showed up & said that he worked with the insurance company (actually the insurance company let's you choose the contractor of your choice). The fire renovation company (contractor) told him that they could rebuild his home & it would be better than it was before the fire. These contractors get you when you're still in shock that your house "burnt down", & assure you that they are going to "take care of everything" and you won't have to worry about anything. They take care of getting a crew to come into your home & clean up the debris & hire sub-contractors to do everything else. (1) A company comes & goes through anything that can be salvaged & cleans it to be reused. Including clothing & bedding. They don't tell you that the price they charge for this is more than what you can go out & buy brand new. (2) A subcontractor is hired to do the actual rebuilding. He sub-contracts the cheapest "tradesmen" he can hire to do the plumbing, electrical, replacing furnace/AC , insulation, sheetrock, kitchen cabinets, etc. Most of these people probably don't have a license to do that work or if they do, it is a LOW GRADE license. Tradesmen licenses do come in grades, A ,B, or C. I'm sure that a lot of this "work" is paid "under the table" so that as much of the money from the insurance company goes into the contractor's pocket as possible. These tradesmen overcharge their services because their thought is "well, it's not costing the homeowner anything because "the insurance company is paying for the renovation." The worse part of this is that the homeowner gets sub-standard work on the renovation of his home to the point that the workmanship is dangerous & could be deadly to the homeowner's family when they move back in to occupy the home (loose, dangling live electrical wires under the kitchen sink, under the house, in the attic, unstable-improperly connected vent pipe from the furnace that removes deadly gases from entering the home). Yes, all this happened at my son's house. Fortunately, my son knew enough about home maintenance to catch all these things. Getting the "tradesmen" to come back & fix these problems took a lot of time & delayed the process of finishing the house. Some of the problems were never fixed & my son had to "fix" the problems himself. Even the individual building supply companies (roof gables, windows & doors) delivered the wrong sizes & everything had to be reordered which further delayed the "moving back in" date. Not one thing in the rebuilding was done right the first or even second times. You can image the stress on the homeowner after seeing his house almost burnt to the ground, also seeing his home constantly "molested" by incompetent sub-contractors & "tradesmen" for six months. This home was only 1,000 sq. ft. & had a simple floor plan. What the h ll , was wrong with the people working on this home? The only people that knew their job & did a good job were the firemen who put the fire out. The lesson here is -- if you have fire damage, give yourself a week or two to get over the shock & then look up reviews for contractors in your area & try to talk to people who have had work done by them. It is a long process to rebuild, so take your time to get it done right.
You can't rely on the city codes inspector to see or catch the poor quality work done. The codes inspector passed a lot of work that should have failed inspection.

I show this couple on the episode and the house didn't look like that at the end. They even took money away from her and gave it to David. She was extremely picky at everything and literally raised her voice at the Hostess. The producer's has to get involved

With $140k, they should’ve made a down payment on a new home instead 🙄🙄
@@HylerMusic oh I'll have my own renovation show in Oklahoma. It may just be on UA-cam but it'll be there

I would not buy any house that was flipped even if it wasn't for a TV show. They are in it for a quick buck and cut many corners to make the house look nice but that's all. It is only a matter of time for the lack of quality to show itself.

I wish Room by Room was in reruns. I enjoyed Matt & Shari so much.
I got to interview Shari from Room by Room (she’s awesome) and she talked about how they built everything themselves so they could actually teach the viewer how to do it, that’s a crazy amount of work for two people! She basically started HGTV, it’s not the same now for sure.
I know, I miss Candice Olson "Devine Design" and Genevieve Gorder "Dear Genevieve"...those were the good ol days. Now everything is a competition.
Love it or list it always asking for 100k and dont complete peoples wish list. Fixer upper & property brothers gut damn near the whole house with that kind of budget
100k doesn't really buy a brand new house of any size. Maybe for a 1-1.5k SQF house, but most of these are double that, if not more.
Thanks for sharing.
That’s so shady, making the homeowners take out a loan and then HGTV pocketing almost half of that. No wonder the work was so shoddy.
Nobody made them do anything. They did this willingly.
And the best thing is... they actually fell for it! 🤣🤣🤣
@@Jason2-legit How would they know it was going to turn out like this?
@@Jason2-legit I agree, even with the offer to be on the show I would never have agreed to give 140k to a production company to renovate for me. The gotters got got is all I see here.
Well in all fairness, I don't expect HGTV to bring the same contractor everywhere they go throughout the USA making sure they do a good job. They are going to hire local people that don't care but to get paid as the production packs up and moves on to the next house
Damn why not just hire a contractor and not have it on TV? What was the point if you had to pay?
Dr. Drake Ramoray ikr
National TV spotlight on their home for future foster children....
Presumably they're getting a discount on the value of the work.
Dr. Drake Ramoray seriously!! and having no control or input...I always assumed these shows paid for the renovations!!
Half of what they paid would have been enough to renovate that house off camera. Being on TV must be the main reason they agreed to it.
This show always urked me, you give the British lady 6 figures and she "can never do everything your asking for with that budget..."
That's because she doesn't actually do anything when the cameras aren't rolling. She wears work clothes and goes through the motions of handling tools only for the scenes you actually see then she's back in her capris or leggings and back in her Mercedes driving back to the hotel.
To be fair; home renovations do cost a lot of money. A new kitchen like the one in this video can cost about $40k.
I'm confused. If the homeowner has to take out a loan for the renovation then why use the tv show?
Their house gets fixed up, while the guy looks for a new home for them. The owners decide to sell their renovated house and buy the new property or stay in their renovated house. Their renovated property goes up in value and if sold, the money might cover the cost of the new property. At least that's the premise.
The owners will have to pay off their current mortgage plus the loan to fix up said property. They'll still be in eternal debt. How is this show successful? How do the producers manage to perpetuate this scam?
It's a better question...
Sounds like scammers falling for a corporate scam
Because they get to be on TV.
I was always under the impression that the show either pays a portion of the renovation cost, or offers a large discount on the renovation work. This would save the homeowners several thousand dollars, and if they sell, would net them even more on the sale of their old house.
Exactly my thoughts. I'd take my money & hire a reputable company..not a tv show. That's asking for trouble
I always wondered why the small projects on love it or list it cost 4 times as much as an entire house remodel on fixer upper.
To be fair, Texas seems to have a pretty cheap realestate market. And they also act as their own general contractor and realtor, so they save a lot of money there. But I agree with you, they seem to be able to do a 2k SQF house and fix it up pretty good for like 50k sometimes.
Matt Monroe ..fixer upper seems too cheap to believe...I'm convinced they don't include labor costs into the renovations
it's most the market.
It's because she's pregnant and doesn't want the baby to be on TV
I bought a special edition HGTV magazine. And the interview them and announced that she would take time off and raise the baby like she did with the other ones.

The chimney has stood for 45 years, crooked and bent as the day(s) it was built. Funny but not the same show
As a carpenter my dream is to get hired by one of these home improvement shows.
@@StephenKershaw1 it shouldnt matter where you live, a rip off is a rip off end of story
Not even 300 150 to 200 tops go to a lumber yard or home depot.
And where are you located? Would love to reach out about some work!!
Because fewer people have any carpentry skills, they fall victim to outrageous prices. My elderly friend almost paid way too much for a super simple, short rail. When I told her the price was robbery, she found a guy to do it for a reasonable price.
You have to pay for it? What is the point of being on the show?
Vanity
Clout
The point is that is ASSUMED that they will have the best of the best and that the renovations are done super quickly, like the other HGTV shows. I think it's around a month whereas normally a project like that would take several months. They also imply, imply being the key word, so idk if it's true, that the realtor on the show, David helps you buy the home. (Meaning again, that it saves a substantial amount of time) I'm not defending the show by any means, I'm just saying that's what is advertised.
What kind of idiots will PAY for a T.V. show to renovate their home? The entire point for a T.V. show to renovate your home is they pay for it.
The whole “reading from a script”/“being told what to say and how to act” shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. There is no such thing as reality tv. It is all just for entertainment purposes and an effort to gain as many ratings as possible.
The same can be said for the news industry (print,t.v., cable, internet).
@CrazyWarriorCatLady
I’ve been saying that for years about any show claiming to be a reality show, the only reality is that the show knows before they record the first episode(Survivor, Big Brother, etc..) who the final winner will be or in this case the losers!!!
A TV show trying to get ratings ??
Well I'll be dog gone, who would have guessed ?
I used to watch HGTV years ago, but they became crap TV. All about buying houses not DIY like they used to be. I do not even know what their content is anymore.
i got rid of cable..all together..all these "phony" reality shows got old..thats $80 a month of my hard earned money going to crap tv..no thanks
I got rid of TV altogether YEARS ago! It's ALL crap. I wouldn't watch it if they paid ME!
Arent you perfect
burly636 same. I also miss if walls could talk 😢
:(. Basically they don't want us fixing it ourselves.
those shows are on diy network
One more thing HGTV does...they are one looooooong commercial. You need stainless..wood floors...etc. Hurry to buy
all this stuff.
I agree with you, Karen. I miss the organizational shows and the decorating shows.
Don't kid yourself, almost everyone doing "renovations" these days is an unskilled contractor.
Or a illegal.
They need to reach out to others that had "renovations" by the show to start a class action.
Class action suits really only benefit class action lawyers. Anyone with a good case will probably want to file fheir own suit.
Kind of a useless report because they don't show the alleged shoddy work.
Exactly.
They didnt want to show the shoddy work because that would then inform HGTV of what they did wrong and able to make up an excuse.(defense)
Right on.
Are you blind the unfinished floor, holes in the floor, the shotty concrete pour, semi-finished paint work
Look at the final shot at the kitchen cabinet the whole cabinet has a gap

That's exactly what I say about all these people come out and say they were sexually abused by celebrities they wanted to be with a celebrity they took the hush money they got sexually violated and now the money is gone they want to complain and sue. It the same principle it's just a different subject you wanted to be famous is the bottom line. They wanted to be on TV you got what you asked for but you didn't get what you expected that's how it always goes with victims.
Liza Tanzawa honestly this isn’t something that could have happened to any of us for a multitude of reasons lol
Smullet90 I like that they keep spewing “for foster kids!” ????? Like that literally has nothing to do with anything at all ever lol a cheesy line to make people feel bad for them.
How is this a surprise? So-called “reality tv” is the greatest oxymoron ever! There is nothing real on tv. C’mon people, wake up!!
Exactly
(Both the show and Bob was sued by more than one home owner.)
But hey, some people live to get screwed over.
(Bob became a bit of an ass when he began to get popular.)
Anyone that has enough money to spend too fix their home, regardless of what it is, should be realistic and NOT just trust a reality television show to be above board.

Yes! Why are people so afraid of color?
I get the want for something timeless, but not every single thing has to be white. Yawn hahah
This is the most unrealistic home makeover show on tv.
No. Flip or flop is. They literally teach you how NOT to do construction.
All of these shows are unrealistic. I would have to say Trading Spaces was the worst because they made shiplap and barn doors appealing compared to the disasters they put out every week.
i recommend watching home town, its a super sweet show and its cute and lowkey and very unique. and the people on it are so sweet

What most don't realize is that you signed away your right to sue typically in this situation.
@@pjt3887 You're clearly wrong, they did sue them.
@FlyingMonkies325 I can only hope so. Extreme Makeover did a house a few miles from me. They so overbuilt the house, that the homeowners couldn't even afford the utility bills. They actually sold tickets and gave home tours to people, in an effort to pay their bills, and auctioned off the SUV that was part of the deal, to help pay their inflated property taxes. They were trying to sell it, but I never heard if they managed to do it.

Or, don't remodel at all, if it looks good and is in good condition.
hamsterama being Jealous right now I love the 1950s, that's the kind of house I want to live in!
I agree. My 117 year old Colonial has most of its original woodwork. I'm keeping it that way. Heck that's why I bought it in the first place.

Huh?
*Willy MacTavish*
Wait a minute here, big boy.
Says the Script.
this has nothing to do with her goddamned genitalia nitwit. It has everything to do with her total incompetence as a PM.
We looked at an HGTV house in Austin. My Engineer son showed us all of the shortcuts the builders took with the house. It was flashily but just junk.
shadrach that's all them cookie cutter houses built on spec some are better than others but most are built as cheap as possible if you want a well constructed you have to hire a reputable custom home builder with no less than 20-25 years experience or build it yourself/be your own general contractor but that's a gamble if you don't work in the trades go with the home builder

Tiger Cub and abused by all parties, let's be fair now kitty.
FumariVI Hillary is no saint friend and I believe there's plenty of fault, and plenty of people it can be attributed too.
This show is so suspect. They seem to need way more money for renovations than any other show on TV. Then they can literally NEVER do everything they say they are going to do. They are the only show that never finishes and never has enough money.
property brothers is even worse about always needing more money
I noticed the same thing! Some of their renovations are so expensive!! Suspect.
@@concorde9615 nothing good

Thankful for what we get to see. Its very interesting the things you can learn.
@Jim Elliott chip and jo are so wholesome

All "reality" tv shows are scripted. So in true reality, they are not reality. If you want to watch real reality, just watch families here on youtube. But I still love HGTV. Lots of fun ideas for your house.
Sheryl and Bob so... Was this all scripted lol
Lol. Says the person pushing their family youtube channel. You don’t set up videos? Come up with subject matter beforehand? Coach your children about videos you’re about to do? That’s not reality then. Sorry...
hahah good try! :P
If you want reality, UNPLUG THE CABLE as I did 14 years ago. Now my TV is used to play commercial-free DVDs from Redbox. [insert happy, contented sigh here] Now I'm finishing more of my projects on time and under budget.
"unplug the cable" = infomercial? What reality do you live in, jeommy kin?
I have been on reality tv and I know how awful it is. You are told to say things you would never say. A terrible and exploitative experience.
No, you weren't, cartoon face?
I’ve always wondered why people would trust shows with 140k of their money. I feel like I could pay contractors and get all the features I would want for much much less... I would never trust random contractors hired by the show to do major work on my house.. nor would I trust a show with my money. That’s just crazy to me.
It's so you can be famous on tv I guess
Do not go to a "reality" show for real services.
Lol...
Cathy Coyer damn Canadians never trust them
HGTV is owned by an American company.
Same I haven’t watched it since 2016
Why do people subject themselves to these shows? What's in it for them? 15min of somewhat fame?
Don Quixote Small brains with large pockets.
My guess would be that they believed they would probably get top-notch professionals and workmanship, thinking that it would be better to deal with people who have a big name and reputation and are even going to showcase their work on television. In other words, they thought it would be 'safer.' Apparently, it didn't turn out that way, though.
Cause they're suckers like most people.
Stay away from Hollyweird when it comes to home renovations
I really liked the original shows HGTV had back in the 1990’s, much better than their shows today.
“Damaged floor boards, a heating vent missing, cheap carpet over chipped concrete and unpainted surfaces.” Sounds like it can be fixed in a week.
Who cares if the concrete is chipped if it is carpeted over? I am not sure if I am missing something, but that happens quite a bit.
Yea these are small fixes...seems like this couple liked the TV attention. They were all smiley..don't seem stressed
Not the point? Should have been pristine before contractors left and the job done RIGHT,.
I don't think that is the point. There shouldn't be ANY little repairs left when contractor left!
Point being ... shouldn't have to be fixed at all
I wish i had a house to complain about someone ruining.
a bunch of white people
Only... white people own homes?
Aye don’t think you get out much huh bud
LOL.
1996
WHY do people pay up front??? In California you are only allowed to collect 10% or $1000.00 whichever is less! After that you work out a pay schedule as work progresses. NEVER EVER PAY THE FULL AMOUNT IN ADVANCE!!!
In Michigan you have to pay 1/2 up front and the rest on completion.
I used to love this show but always wandered why the lady host was always saying how like “$140,000 is no where near enough for what you want! I’ll need more!” When that should be plenty for a huge renovation + addons. I always thought it was due to location, but now I see it’s probably because of all the cost for production 🤔
Plus she needs to buy some more designer clothes.
15 minutes of fame
Why didn’t they show all of the alleged problems/issues?
a moment of silence for the spray tan
I am really shocked the tv company took $55,000. The rest doesn't surprise me. You would think the TV company's compensation would be that they get a project, free actors and a story to tell.
I would think the money came from the shows sponsors or the network. i understanding paying for the work but not the production. something seems fishy here.
Wow, someone needs to go easy on the tanning.

Lol that's hilarious, "we had to take a loan, and then put in some of our own money too", people loans ARE your own money too
i think what they meant was that they borrowed money, then put in some of their existing money....like probably money from their savings
loans are NOT your own money whom tf taught you that
Hard cash it different its like spending grocery money
@@londonm3161 you'll learn soon enough.
That threw me for a second, too. It was weird he worded it that way. It's not relevant to viewers whether the money came from a loan or from their savings account. What's relevant is the homeowner's portion vs what the TV show contributed. Paying off whatever loans they have is their own personal business.
The spray tan on the wife. Yikes
Kitana Kojima You need to put a top on. Yikes
TV show did that too
I was wondering why the money wasn't adding up, they're taking a huge percent.

Pamela Earnest Thank you for sharing your son's story! Very good advice! Good luck to your son 😊

I read all of it. It was a very interesting post.
Pretty sure HGTV didn't film most of the areas so the viewers would have been tricked to believe that they did a great job.
Im an Interior Designer and for one, it should have not cost that much! My company does all that for around 50-85 grand. Thats all depending on the material that you pick out. We've even done full house makeovers for around 35 grand. Second was there not a contract??? Lol

Owners: Hold on let me see what the script says...
