Just Hang Up - Scams Against Seniors, Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 гру 2024
- It all starts with a simple phone call or a piece of mail telling you that it's your lucky day. You've won the lottery! But there's a catch- to get your prize you need to send the caller a few small fees. And then a few more. Through incremental and persistent requests for money, con artists squeeze their victims out of funds they don't have, all the while promising that the prize winnings are just around the corner.
"Dan Rather Reports" investigates a scam that targets American seniors, bilking them out of hundreds of millions of dollars. But a few victims are fighting back and working with police to help trap their would-be tormentors. The trail leads to Jamaica where con artists have built a thriving organized crime network to prey on unsuspecting Americans.

I'm 53 and I'm on Medicare (I'm a cancer survivor).
2 weeks ago, a young woman "from Medicare" called me & was asking me a bunch of questions. She had a thick Indian accent.
I told her, "if you are indeed from Medicare you should know this stuff. Just mail me some info if you're wanting to give me a service. Explain it in writing".
She said I would need to talk to her "supervisor" which I knew was a translation for "ok this woman is sharp. I better go get the big gun".
So this Indian guy gets on the phone & starts asking me how much I get on my HEALTHY FOODS card.
And again , I said, "gee if you are indeed from Medicare you should have all of my information. Just mail me some paper"..
He HUNG UP ON ME!
These criminals thought they were gonna get all of my information so they could use it for Lord knows what!
ALWAYS just tell them to mail the information
I agree. I received a phone call from a woman who said that I had won money. I told her to mail it to me. Of course, a hang up.
Th IRS.or Medicare WILL NEVER CALL YOU, they will send you a letter. I had a mn call me & said my grandson needed help. I told him I might be old, but he was full, of crap as I have no grandchildren, my only child isn't maid & lives with me. He quickly hung up.
Exactly, don't tell them anything they ask for.
Someone called me recently and said, _"Good morning Linda! I'm calling to help you save money on your car insurance!"_
This was especially funny because I'm not named Linda, and I don't own a car; but when I said, _"You have the wrong number, I'm not Linda"_ she asked, with sickly-sweet fake niceness, _"Oh I'm sorry! Who am I speaking with?"_
Me: _"You're not speaking with Linda. Goodbye."_
I NEVER answer a number I don't know. If it's important, they will leave a message ! 🤐
10 Years have passed since this wonderful series and scammers are still thriving. Educate yourself and your family members. It's our only defense.
So true. Inheritance, romance, lottery, the scams go on and on. Ten years later and scammers are thriving. Lessons are not being learned.
One big red flag is when the strange voice on the other end warns you about telling the clerk behind the counter what you are doing!
HANG UP THE PHONE!!! IGNORE THE CALLS!!!!
I only answer phone calls that I know are legitimate.
Don't give them your name or any other personal information to them and don't hang up on them until asking them where they are calling from. If you do that consistently they will start becoming afraid to call you at all anymore.
@@SusanHolbert Even it is legitimate it can be a scam, hang up and do your own research by calling back the official company number. They can fake numbers, locations and identities
My Father always told us, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Meaning if it sounds too good to be true you cannot count on it or believe it.
Your father gave good advice! 👍
Unsolicited phone calls = hang up
Unsolicited mail = bin
Unsolicited messages = delete
Unsolicited visit = call the cops.
Unsolicited phone call/unknown number = don't answer at all. If it is genuine they will leave a message explaining who they are, why they called, etc. A scammer almost never will.
@@OLDCHEMIST1Nobody can scam you simply because you answered a phone call. There's no need to be paranoid about answering the phone.
@@OLDCHEMIST1 Block the numbers.
@@Stangmaster Sometimes for emails you have to block entire domains, because scammers just run emails as 00001 ... 00002 @scammerdomain. Obviously not as simple as that, but along those lines. For calls I have a message saying that I will only deal with a call if a message is left showing they are genuine.
Absolutely DISGUSTING robbing an elderly person. This makes me sick and breaks my heart.
It’s when they frighten and intimidate them that pisses me off.
Even worse when it was done by a trusted member of one's own family.
Makes me cry to see people who are evil enough that they see these vulnerable, elderly men and women as marks. I don’t know how these sociopaths can sleep at night. Do they have elderly parents? They probably steal from their own grandmothers. I really do hope they get there’s - perhaps they don’t realize that they themselves won’t always be young. I rather hope they suffer for their disgusting crimes.

This is the saddest thing I've watched. Really broke me to tears watching how these poor elderly people are treated. We need to find these scam centers and make them pay for the lives they've ruined. We also need to provide counselling services for these elderly people who had to go through the trauma from being scammed. We really need to do better for the elderly.
I wish I had the money to reimburse Norman for ALL his losses! I am so very very SORRY NORMAN!!!!

Don't feel bad for Norman. Norman is fucking stupid.

You hear how Norman speaks about hanging em from a tree, you could tell he lynched a few blacks back in the day.
I feel bad for those who fall for the scam. These scammers target highly on seniors, handicaps, and disabled peers. Making you spend countless and countless dollars. Now I’ll admit, I don’t know Norman... but you have to understand he is old. Not stupid. If you aren’t interested in this story, don’t watch the video then. 😂
My friend got a call from a scammer telling her she won 2M dollars but can only receive it if she paid a certain fine. She responded: "OK take it out of the winning and send the balance for me." She NEVER got another call from them again! I spend what I earn.

summerslake1814: I once got a call from someone claiming to be working for the power company. He told me my bill was past due and if I didn't pay it now with a gift card my power would be turned off. I told him I didn't have a car so do what you have to do. He hung up and my power was never turned off.
Great comeback
Why would you believe you had won a large lottery prize, if you have never bought a ticket..?
That would be my first indication that the people on the phone were scammers..😢
When they mention :God-fearing," you know it's a scam. They're looking for the most gullible victims.
Lock up these scammers for long periods of time behind bars.
And throw away the key !!!
This is probably going to fall on deaf ears, but I have to say something here. To the commenters calling the victims "stupid" or "greedy" try, "gullible" or "desperate." Many senior citizens live paycheck to paycheck, and I'm talking a social security check. They have no one to care for them and no means to return to work. Keeping this in mind, one can start to understand how the promise of money becomes enticing. The technological world we younger folks live in is not the same world as our grandparents once knew. How dare any of you chastise them for becoming a victim. It is this same heartless attitude that the scammers have when they swindle our elderly out of money. One of these days, if we live long enough, we will be old too. I guarantee in 50 years, the world will again have changed into something wholly unfamiliar to us. I don't think any of us would appreciate the young people at that time saying we somehow to deserved to have our lives destroyed. So next time, before you open your uninformed, hateful mouths, think about what the fuck you are saying. It could be you or someone you love one day. My opinion has been stated and I will not discuss it further with any of you hateful bastards.
It happened to me before and it was a Nigerian. God will punish them. And they go to church everyday 😢😭
I agree. No one knows till one walked in their shoes. Scams rip my heart
Absolutely I'm a Army Veteran and even young soldiers as well as civilians become gullible, desperate and needy as long as blood flows through your veins guess what you have emotions, moods, feelings, needs and need comfort whether financial, emotional or sexual. Our logic is only clear when we tend to behave like robots instead of human beings.
Anyone that has to clean up AFTER the fact understands your position Traci.. A child of a co-worker of my fathers had them all wrapped up in a financial "plan" that took me a two minutes to "see" through and nearly 6 months to unravel..He had my parents money tied up in annuities that were losing value.. 20K in a money market account earning 1/16th what it could earn in 18 month CDs.. because they were physically insolvent and could be conned into thinking he would take care of them..As soon as the fees dried up however he was never to be seen again
Big up!
Bless you Pat Coffin. You are working in a sector that cares for our treasured people who form part of our history. My guess is that you are under paid and under valued. I mean it's wealth and status that matters right? WRONG! Without people like you there would be no wealth!
These elderly come from an era when people were decent and there was no exposure to the global cesspool of despicables. We do need to find ways to protect them using technology, law and software.
But still, they have witnessed the horrors of WWII, Vietnam War, the Korean War...you would think they would be more worldly.
Yes more morals ...around. back in the day.do not open anything up if unsure about...let alone give your details...or money
We pay so much for technology yet none of these companies do anything to keep our information private. You can “block” calls and before you can turn around, they are back. Receiving calls about your credit card, day and night, and getting short shrift from credit card companies about fixing this problem. The Post Office fills mail boxes with stuff we didn’t ask for and do not want. There is accountability there but never acted upon. These scams are crimes and if as much effort was put into vaporizing these criminals as goes into many other idiotic spendings by the Federal Government, it might just possibly be stopped.
Some people have never been decent
There have always been scammers, technology has just made it easier to scam more people so it is much more prevalent.
These scammers will rot in hell.
Rot AND burn OVER and over
Don't say that =( . That's mean..we are all humans and we all make mistakes. They can change, they can repent for what they did. We are all able of change.

Why do people answer suspicious numbers? Let machine answer.
@julienielsen4462 Because you don't know for sure that the caller is suspicious unless you answer the call. It could be an unknown number, but a perfectly legitimate caller. It's not always a good idea to reject the call.

I don't understand how the elderly, who are supposed to have so much life experience, are Scammed so easily? My grandmother was born in 1906 and she never gave money to anyone, let alone to total strangers! She was a very smart woman.

I work with older veterans at my local VA Hospital. One weekend, a patient wanted me to go to Walmart and get him a prepaid gift card. A scammer called the veteran on his cellphone and said that his service would be cancelled if he did not get a giftcard. The patient was afraid his grandkids would not be able to call him anymore.
I notified the Charge Nurse what was going on. The patient was very upset at me because I wouldn't help him get this giftcard. His phone was never cancelled.

3:45 No one along the way told Norman that something wasn't right? I would think someone had the chance when he was cashing all his stuff in. A clerk, or bank teller. Someone. We really need to watch out for eachother better.
In other shows on senior scams, many people try to stop them, including banks and Western Union (I saw multiple times people were banned by WU from sending money.....and so the victim asked friends and family to send, and when they were stopped they just mailed the cash instead. I used WU and they asked questions about scams over and over. Another women tried to get a Power of Attorney to protect their relative who believed a scam, but the Courts said it isn’t illegal to make bad decisions.
It is just tough to convince others they have been fooled - there is a saying that it is easier to deal with having $1,000 stolen from us than having $100 dollars scammed from us, and our brains are very resistant to the mesas age that we are being tricked.

this is so sad we need to educate our seniors on all these scams that are going on if you don't know who's calling then hang up your phone
All people should be warned about it.
They are not accustomed to doing that. They lived in a different world. It was simpler, and easier to determine who you could trust.
Why would you say this is a scam? Is this the first time you have won a lottery?
If you don't recognize the number let the answering machine take it. If you don't know them hang up.
Why are seniors so susceptible to fraud? Very smart all their lives and then so gullible later in life. If you havent bought a lottery ticket, then you have not won anything. How can you be so easily duped? Get rid of your land line. Cell phone only and block unknown callers.

What I find most devastating... is that elderly people are not selfish..... they dont look at money as just ways to take care of themselves. They look at it as money that can be used for funeral costs. Imagine being old and confused... but on top of that... you dont know if you have 15 days or 15 years to live. Leaving the burden of a funeral on your family is very hard and it can lead to believing you have money when you dont

He said "You aren't the kind of person we want." LOL I found that hilarious- and though "Yeah, you're right. I'm not scam-able."
These elderly victims needs urgent strategic education to help to combat this wicked act. Public strategic adverts needs to saturate the country and be seen everywhere, in order to make these people aware of this cancer. This is just too painful to watch.
How can you win a lottery for which you didn't buy a ticket?
A lot of lonely senior's probably don't get calls from lost friends & family members anymore. So when some stranger calls & act like they care, they'll use that against them pretending to be your new best friend. Getting as much information so it benefits them in the long run.
Rubbish
I always say this: did you win the gold medal in gymnastics at the last Olympics? And I say why not? It's because you didn't enter in the Olympics. Getting all of these notices that you've won lotteries and sweepstakes. How can you win a contest if you never entered?
I hardly ever won ten quid on the lottery i did enter! I got 4 numbers once( for a ticket i bought for an elderly neighbour)🙈🤣
I can easily imagine a senior with memory problems thinking they bought a ticket and have simply forgotten.
This lonely old man breaks my heart. He deserves a break .
Interesting that there seems to be so much outrage at these scammers, yet when casinos offer senior citizens a free trip to their casino, and even include spending money, and these same senior citizens literally gamble away their SS check, where's the outrage there?
I like the way this Man tries to keep his value
above all and never uses cuss or bad words
to help the audience through his recovery!
Hats off to you #crackassetsupport for Helping.
No ... To help foil the scammers always press "1" and then just be silent. Don't say anything to them - BURN THEIR TIME! Their business model is a lot like spam, they are HOPING that 1000 people they call will quickly hang up on them so they get to that 1 person in a 1000 who is vulnerable that much sooner. The more we slow them down - the more likely their scam will start costing them more money than what they can steal.
I wish scammers got more time in prison.
Its really sad but as long as there are lonely old seniors, there will be scammers trying to take their money. Scammers try to be your friend and get close to you that's how they get your money. Seniors are so willing to talk that it make it easy for scammers to scam them.
F all scammers!😮
It’s still come down to “greed” . I don’t feel sorry but feel sorry .....
The title of this should he called "Just don't answer the damn, phone"😡. If its really important, ler them leave a message. If you see a number that you don't recognize, don't answer it. It's very simple. I tell this to my elderly parents all the time and they do it.
Nobody can scam you simply because you answered a phone call. There's no need to be paranoid about answering the phone.
Most of these scammers are probably dead already. There is no honor amongst thieves. They constantly killing each other every day over scamming in jamaica.
Stop telling LIES.
What if a scammer was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer? 😄
Yep that’s right
I have received 4 calls saying that my social security number has been involved in criminal activities and my S.S. # was going to be eliminated, even asked if I had a bank account. Another saying that the govenment was giving me $17,000 because I do not have a criminal record and I have not filed for bankruptcy. Wanted me to send over $200, I told them why would I send money to get money? I laughed and told him to take it out of the money I was going to get and hung up. I now do not answer. The Social Security Administration never calls. They send letters.
I love that call!! They never call me anymore since I asked if they found the body too? They just don’t like me!
The government could step in and stop a lot of this but as long as they aren't getting their money they probably won't get involved
During this documentary to help us,there's advertising that is scamming seniors, right here on line. Imagine that. Lol
Im 62...and not once had a scammer phone me..l'm dying for one to try it on me...a fiesty old Scottish woman...my partner said.."the scammer will end up sending you money"...my mantra is.."never kid a kidder"...😆
Unfortunately, these scammers prey on the elderly because they have trouble with their memory and hearing. My father almost got scammed for $2000. Thank goodness my mother had the car or else he would have been at Western Union wiring money. The caller said it was his grandson (my son) that was in South America with a broken down car. He needed the money to fix the car. When we questioned him, he didn't know if the caller identified himself as "your grandson" or "Johnny". He couldn't remember if he called my dad Grampa or the special name my children call my dad. My Dad explained that my son was in South America for a school trip possibly. It's scary because my father was adamant that my son needed money until my mother and I had to prove to him he was at home getting ready for school in the morning. Unbelievable.
nice to see that Dan Rather is still doing good work even after CBS unfairly ousted him, I hope he never retires
Yeah....a man who was fired for lying is exposing other liars If the shoe fits.....
Didn’t Rather lie about his past and got caught, he’s like Hillary and biden just makes up shit
If the number is NOT on your contact list, don't respond. Add them to your 'contacts' and then block them. A scammer's calls will usually be 1-2 rings before they hang up. Scammers rely on you clicking on links in their emails and SMS to confirm you exist and to "reel" you in. DON'T DO IT.
I won a “lottery” that I never bought a ticket for???
I can well imagine a forgetful senior thinking that they may have bought a ticket and just forgotten about it.
There should be heavy fines on scammers who cause immense harm,in several areas of their lives.
The government should pass laws that would put a life sentence on these criminals. If the creeps live in another country, then the government should threaten these governments with sanctions.
The scammers have an especially hot, torturous place in hell awaiting them.
No such thing as hell
It's right here ! 👿
Imagine Norman said “fuck off I don’t gamble! So I didn’t win shit!”
What scammer can't understand is their scam will eventually catch up with them. For the time being they will make money, but just for the time being.
In the long run they will feel just as bad as the people they scammed. This is the law of the universe!
Omg! How could someone do that to another human being?! It's just wrong and predatory. Those scammers will burn in Hell.
sadly they think it's their job and aren't doing nothing wrong
I love ❤️ getting these calls. Calls letting me know my warranty is about to expire or any of a dozen different ways to get my money. Then I save the number under the name junk, junket, Junkie, etc. each time I get a new number I add it to one of these categories. It is great as when they ring again I don’t have to answer because it comes up as a junk call. At age 84 it is just one of these little things that add a little fun to my life love ❤️ it.
86 now huh? I hope you stayed safe and Covid free
you go grandma!
These kids aren't as smart as they think. Enjoy wasting the scammers' time 😉
Selfish and greed is wgatt lead to this
How can you win a lottery that you never entered? Anyone who goes for this deserves to be scammed. It's called greed and stupidity.
Hi, I get these emails and sometimes regular mail a lot telling me if I send a thousand dollars I’ll get back four thousand bucks! I delete them and shred the ones from the mail! I also get a automated phone call about this and I just hang up!! If it’s sounds to good to be true, then it’s a scam plane and simple!! Just my experience, regards, Bob
When they call me I always say I don't buy s*** over the phone.
Poor Pat, i feel so sorry for her, lonely and not well off. To hear his phone calls being so threatening I was not surprised she was afraid and had to secure her door.
I know this video is 6 years old but i hope Pat is well now and able to enjoy her retirement if she could afford to retire.

Seems as if everyone turns their backs on her, heart rendering story, these scammers going to get what's coming to them, it's called karma.
to OCDTraci....AMEN!!!! agree with everything you say...I'm "older" now and alone, but I am a cynic due to betrayals in childhood and marriages, etc., I don't trust ANYONE...however many senior citizens are out there who are alone....maybe have Alzheimers.....vulnerable.....in poverty and desperate for a better life....I have to work to suppliment my SS which is a joke....I am American and worked here all my life and govn't is giving away my benefts to people who never worked here..they live better than me....but I always am of the thought----if it is too good to be true...it IS too good be true.....I toss spam letters in the trash.....anyone not on my phone contacts, goes to VM and unanswered.......I don't talk with ANYONE over phone nor do I respond to scam mail........thats how you shut them (dirtbag scammers) down........these bottom feeders...lizzard crap eating sub-humans....may their karma that comes back on them be sooo hard, they get on their knees and surrender to the light............I HATE a F***ing predator.....predators need to be removed from us good folks......exterminated or sent to a special island for evil so they can kill each other off...............sorry, but I absolutely HATE predators..........Humans are the only species who prey for greed and power and sex.......I love animals more than most people......
