There are lots of scams you need to watch out for, but I thought I would go over some common ones, including a brand new scam known as the "can you hear me" scam. It involves the scammer recording you saying Yes so they can use it later to charge you bogus fees. I also discuss other scams such as the call forwarding scam, the windows tech support scam, and others. Plus how to avoid scams in general.

If you can, for starters...don't answer calls from ph numbers you don't recognize. Your friends /family will leave you voice mail or text you. Then block the numbers for any future calls. Do not answer any calls that show unknown # or no caller ID. Hope this helps.

I tell all my personal business people and my family that I do not answer my phone due to all malarkie scams and spam risk ect. There are other means to contact me. If not by text then you have my address so please understand nothing personal but contact me other ways besides a phone call. I keep my phone turned down for a good reason. Understand and respect me for my decision it is nothing personal what so ever. My choice alone.

100% agree. Plus I switch off my cellphone unless I need to use it. Anyone trying to reach me should sms or use the Internet. As an added safety, I have a separate cellphone just for banking transactions and nothing else. And that phone is always powered off until I need to do Internet banking connections.
I buy the cheapest phone. No need for the most expensive, latest model. My best protection...Power Off. Power On only when I need to.
The biggest weakness is to keep the computer and hp powered on especially the hp.

What most people forget is that any real notifications will be mailed. My wife and I are both receiving calls from a scam collection company who say they can help us with a large bill from around 2012. They're using multiple phone numbers, even some numbers local to us. We did in fact incurr that bill back then but has long since been resolved. Where the scam comes in is that they tell us the bill is still pending without resolution and they'd be happy to "help" us with it by making payments to them. This company has many registered complaints against them yet they continue to bother and victimize people without interference from law enforcement.
There's a phone app called truecaller I think which can help individuals in these cases.

As many have stated, in this thread along with thousands of others, if you do not recognize the name, or it lists no info on who is calling, you are not required, or obliged to answer the phone. Also, as stated, if it is important, they will call you back, or find another way to contact you. If by chance you do happen to answer, end the call immediately! Power to the people!

Why does EVERYTHING require a law? Even if there was one, how can the government do anything about it if they dont know who is calling you or when the caller is outside the US where that stupid law means nothing? Besides, why do you think the government even CARES about your piddly issue? Thre is one surefire control and its in your hands. Just hang up the phone. Its THAT easy to stop from being scammed.

I've gotten this one several times: A professional American sounding woman recording says they have a special lower rate offer for your credit card. You press 1 and someone sounding Indian or Middle Eastern starts to explain how since you are an excellent customer, you are now eligible for a 3% interest rate, but he just needs to verify your VISA credit card number. I repeatedly gave him a fake number, and he kept getting frustrated saying it was invalid. I then said "well, you're Bank of America, don't you KNOW the right number? He repeated that he needed to verify it. I then told him to hold on while tried to find the right one card in my purse. And then I said "while you're waiting, please take this opportunity to go f--- yourself!" And I hung up.

They misuse the word Verify. If they’re verifying, they should give you the number! I got a bunch of these from a drugstore, American callers. About some fakatka “points” plan (where you wait 20 minutes in line while an old dear looks for her “card.” I never shop at those places.) Asked me to verify my dob. I said ok. Then they wanted me to give it. I refused. They’d put me on hold, come back saying, “Sorry Ma’am, we can’t do that.” I’d reply, “I didn’t ask you to do anything! You called me!”

We had a keylogger put on our computer by a scammer. I was in the IT field and feel embarrassed that this ever happened but trusting a large company was my mistake. My husbands Dell was under warranty so I told him to have Dell fix it because it needed a new motherboard. He called Dell Support and (to make a long story short) got a tech that talked us into getting on our computer and he put a keglogger on it. After going through 3 techs we finally got it fixed but now had to deal with all the problems. We had tickets to Elton John and he sold our tickets to someone else. We eventually were able to stay and watch the show from nose bleed seats. Ticketmaster refunded the entire amount. We ended up replacing the hard drives. NEVER EVER let anyone on your computer remotely. This guy had an Indian accent and I was Leary about it but I trusted Dell. Doing research I found that Dell knew for many years that they have hired scammers but don't do anything about it.

Thank you very much for sharing this information, much appreciated . I can't understand why phone companies don't block calls from scammers, perhaps all the scammcalls increase the phone companies profits? Nor why there is so little done to put skammers in jail. There should be international co-operation aiming to stamp out this prevalent criminal activity, but I guess someone take a cut out of money transfers, perhaps including corporations that sponsor politician's?

Wow! Recently, I did receive a call where the first words I was asked was, " you can hear me okay, can't you?" Now, I am aware of this very scam and yet I froze, knowing full well that I would've given him an ear full, but in the nick of time I did remember this video (hooray, for me) and ended the call before uttering a word. That was a difficult thing to do, so thanks again, ThioJoe.

They can also call impersonating FBI agents or police officers and threatening you. They will usually try to make you wire them money to supposedly avoid jail time for some minor offense. It sounds kinda legit until they mention you driving to the bank right away.

I received the IRS call that said I owed X amount of taxes [several times now] and if I did not pay right now, they were going to send the local police out to arrest me. The problem is that I used to work for the IRS and also was a state police officer for 21 years. I had also just filed my income tax form a couple of days before and knew I did not owe taxes. I knew that the IRS never called before sending a registered letter to the tax payer, and I also knew that the local police had nothing to do with enforcement of Income tax laws, and that was Federal enforcement. So I just hung up. It was really laughable. I do not answer my home home unless I recognized the number or name. All my calls go to voice mail.

Do a vlog on land-line robo calls and how to made them stop. Sometimes contacting the FTC, National Do Not Call List and the phone company to file a nuisance complaint doesn't work when changing the phone number is not an option.

The 'yes' one is very frightening to me right now because I'm applying for jobs. If someone just asks 'can you hear me?" I'll remember to not say 'yes' but so many of the companies call and ask "is this...?" I have to remember to say "this is.... speaking" instead of 'yes'. Thank you for the info for the star numbers. I'll be sure to pass this along. We have a few aunts and uncles in their 80s we like to keep abreast of everything as scammers love to prey on seniors.

If it’s important, they will leave a message. I have med conditions, and my phone is part of my critical communications. Because of telemarketers and robo-callers, most of the time I have the ringer turned off. I wish there was a way to block or fine the hell out of them for nuisance or disruptive behavior.

This first one has been happening in Mexico for years, I got caught once, and the scammers are insurance or private ambulance service, affiliated with TELMEX. I have learned to answer the question "is this Juan Perez or is this the head of the house" with "speaking", they are persistent, and ask again, I answer the same. It is a lot of work to get one of these contracts cancelled.

I do similarly, when they ask if I am "Mary", I answer, "This is Mary." What often gets them in the end is I ask them what their zip code is. They give up.

Thanks. Have had a number or those described, especially, gift cards, credit card compromised, and computer virus detection scams. A lot of these are sourced from India, based on the accent. Fortunately they were sometimes hard to understand because of the accent. So it is almost a rule, if you get a call and you cannot understand them it is a scammer. They seem to think scamming is just a 'regular profession'. Other times they project a friendly demeanour. -------- Upon occasion you almost want to give them advice on how to improve their story.

Here's my favorite. Regardless of what they ask you, start moving the phone slowly away from your ear and mouth. Since they are on a headset, they will keep turning up the volume, when you get to the point that they truly cannot hear you, literally put your mouth ON the receiver and yell I CAN HEAR YOU, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!!

A couple times, I've gotten this super creepy scam call, I never found out what it is, but it starts out with a pre-recorded message and it doesn't sound recorded at first and it doesn't sound like a robot at all, it sounds like a live person. First, it starts out with some elderly American woman's voice that would be hard to discern if you know the person or not. The first thing they would say is just your first name in the form of a question. Clear as a bell and you think it's a real person. They got me the first with my saying "Yes?". Then it went on, with the same voice, with a chuckle and saying "You're harder to get a hold of than..." blah blah blah. I was still fooled at this point. I asked "Who is this?", I forgot what the next response was, but then I knew they got me and I hung up.
That was the weirdest spam call ever.
There was another one just like that, but it started with "Hello?" in a younger woman's voice and again sounded like a live person. After you respond back, they the same voice continues, saying she's having trouble with her headset and tries to adjust it. I hung up.
I got both of those calls, with the same messages, but I wasn't fooled again and as soon as I heard my name called like that, or with that "Hello?" I would just hang up.
I don't know what those calls are, but anyone get those? Cause those are creepy as hell, especially since it's all pre-recorded.

I got a spam call similar to that, but it starts off with a warm female voice asking how you are doing and you respond something like,"I'm fine, how are you? She chuckles warmly and says,"I'm fine too, glad to hear that you are fine too. Then all of a sudden, a Robotic voice asks you if you want to sign up for Medical Insurance! 🤨🧐 I did,"You're a Robot!" The other line hung up right after I acknowledged that this was a Robot and not a living human being! 🤣

I stopped answering any calls that start with a certain area code (they all use the same one and it's my old area code, making it look like they might be someone I know). I realized that anyone with that zip code would be someone I already have saved in my phone, or if not, they would probably text me first anyway or leave me a real voicemail. There's one really weird one that leaves me the same voicemail: it sounds like a regular lady calling from her office, asking to call her back, but with a little bit of a menacing tone. And then there are the ones where they leave a voicemail with something about "your extended warrantee". I never had any idea what they were talking about, so I figured it was a spam call. I've also noticed the ones that start with "this is your final warning.." or "this is our last attempt to contact you..." or something urgent like that.
