A piece of flat iron will suffice for the camshaft locking . A bolt with a 24 mm head used for a tow ball onto a tow bar will do for the injection pump locking pin

Just passing on something I have learned recently- check the number of teeth (as well as visually aligning to ensure it fits) that are usually written on the toothed belts. Much easier and no ambiguity.

      That's good advice. Thanks!

This is a great instructional video for how not to repair your car. I have never seen such a ham-fisted attempt with such total lack of knowledge in my life. If you want to spend an age and irreparably destroy your engine then this video is for you. I would say do what you are good at and pay someone to do this job for you.

You can buy locking tool set for vw very cheap. This was painful to watch it

It worked though! And obviously having the right tool is better but for those who don't want to or for whatever reason can't get the locking tool, this is an alternative method and one which I've heard of mechanics using.

Another lazy way - slit the old belt lengthways in two whilst on engine. Remove outer half of old belt and push new one on half way. Cut off remaining half of old belt and push new one fully on. Sorted 👍

I tried that method the problem is difficult to slide in the new one without undue the tensioner

THis was a really good video thanks very much. You said the timing belt should be able to be twisted by hand by 45 degrees to ensure correct tension. A guy in another video said 90 degrees. Is either one fine? Definitely not less than 45 degrees and definitely not more than 90? Thank you....hope this makes sense. :)

I might have to try this the next time i have to do it. my mtdi mk2 will soon need a new one. and my brother has got a new JX engine for his syncro after the block on the old on cracked, so that one also needs a new timing belt.

Just use drill bits to line it up. You could have done it quicker doing it properly 😂

You could use both methods together as a sort of belt and braces approach.
