Yup, rarely belt fails because of the belt it self. Even with all the cracks and stuff it will run for years. Belt fails because of the faulty tensioner, pulleys water pump...
Hello, you seem to know a lot about this engine and was hoping you wouldn’t mind answering a question ? I have the same car 1.9 sdi Vw golf 2002. My question is do you know anything about the gearbox? Mine had a reconditioned gearbox fitted 8k miles ago along with a new clutch, but now it pops out of 3rd gear when accelerating and the whole car vibrates when traveling over 50mph. Surely it can’t need another gearbox so soon? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you
Because you say it vibrates based on speed I would guess your tyres need a balance. Or your suspension could be loose? As for popping out of gear. I would check the gear selector linkage. You could also check that the engine and gearbox mounts are all present and tight. I’m no expert on these things. What I have suggested should be found on an mot test. It could be the gearbox. The slipping out of gear thing sounds difficult. If you know it is coming just keep your hand on the gearstick
@@bootsowen Thanks so much for the reply. I've decided just to get rid of it, it's stressing me out to be honest 😄 sometimes it's best to just cut your losses and move on. All the best
Can’t beat the trusty VW PD engine. No DPF to worry about clogging up just pure reliability
It helps a lot, thanks. But why you didn't change a water pump? 🤔
Wasn’t bothered. Some say do it. Some say not. I didn’t. Car didn’t cost me much. I show how to do it in my vw t4 abl timing belt change.

What cause that crying/whining noise when you accelerate the motor? Isn't the belt over tensioned? 11:34
To my knowledge it sounds fine. I got the same engine, whining should be much louder if overtensioned
Os timing belt on SDI might be changed every 6 years? Because of low engine speed in theory belt should last longer ...?
Maybe, but according to the service sheet this SDI has no time limit, only mileage!
