Minecraft PSX, The game you've never heard of

- "Minecraft Playstation Edition" is a game developed by Mojang Studios in the Year 1998 in a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment for the Playstation Console released in 1994, this game was a pre-cursor to the classic 'Minecraft' of 2009, although not many people are aware of it due to it being pulled from store shelves just a year after release with only a 1000 or so copies ever being sold, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a copy at a retro game store about a month ago, here's my experience with the title.
If you'd like to play the game yourself via emulation here's a link to a rom to download as finding a physical copy like myself is nearly impossible to do: www.curseforge.com/minecraft/...
Thanks to xKazIsKooIx for ripping the game files to allow others to play the game
Any help to learn more about the game would be appreciated as I'm still learning about it myself and plan to continue my exploration into the title more on this channel

Can't believe mojang hid this version of the game so they could release an unfinished version of the game on pc and slow add back content that was already in the original. That is crazy

ay sorry to break immersion, but i just gotta give out my massive support for the project, both the video and how it was edited and the modpack itself, i can see a ton of love has been put into it and it shows, the way items render, all the way up to the tiny details like using bars for hunger, health and armor, really nicely done stuff! there are some very few criticisms, like how it uses the beta logo instead of the stone/cobblestone logo from alpha, but otherwise, this is an absolutely amazing project! and it gives it more dread and immersion than modern minecraft, cheers and keep up the good work!
What's the mod pack???

i love the vibe of this, the "lost media" feel is awesome.
This is impressive so far, especially the texture warping and UI. That being said, I think including more modern elements really detracts from the suspension of disbelief. You already have a solid main concept of being 11 years too early, it doesn't need questions brought up about removing and re-adding features. You already reverted to old textures and sounds, but it should have gone further.

They could've made this a mod of beta 1.7.3 or something but those are really hard to run without multimc, plus you can't code it the same way forge mods are coded. That and the lack of the console-style crafting system, but nobody's forward ported that yet, and I doubt anyone would want to go through all the trouble of doing so.

See one song at least, it goes by the name of "9 mc 1 [shimmer]" was found on a lone Aphex Twin soundcloud dump (now deleted) and was alledgedly for the Minecraft soundtrack, and it sounds almost EXACTLY like the Lena Raine track in the video. And from what I could make out of the description, supposedly Lena "ripped off" this song from the 1998 version. ESpecailly because it is not in the soundtrack playlist. Don't have an exact time-stamp, but let me know if you could. Again, you probably can't find the song online, since it was on an obscure one-off account (that was only up for about 5 hours), and was likely DMCA'd off the internet.

A cool detail is that this mod uses the additional songs from the Minecraft: Volume Alpha and Minecraft: Volume Beta soundtracks; almost as if Mojang cut out the more upbeat and bizarre songs in favour of giving it a more mystical fee;.
I wonder if you’ll end up encountering any other things which aren’t in the current versions of the game? Gotta agree with the unease thing, it’s quite bizarre seeing these more modern features juxtaposed with the decidedly older graphical limits. Also given the hardware limitations of the time, is the world finite? I reckon an infinite world on the ps1 would make for quite the technological feat at the time.
For example there's some structures, they're so empty and undone due the capacity of the 30 fps limit and the ram, Also you may encounter a Herobrine because its an modified version.
I remember getting a version of this game at a garage sale too. Weirdly enough, the disc came with a translation slip manual thing inside that told you what the back of the case said, and the paper was in _Japanese._ Still has some pretty wild art though.

What really puts me off about it is how it says "PlayStation Edition", as, if this was the first ever version of Minecraft, (and it was only on the PlayStation), why would they need to specify? I feel this story goes a lot farther back than you think it does...
Since I have an obsession with collecting games, I felt the urge to check my "dealer" (and crush) to see if she heard about this game, or if she coule find it.
She knows her stuff usually, but she surprisingly never heard of it, and she haven't found a single copy of it.
But I might have a little theory about it.
Me and my Dealer are french, and we usually play french versions of retro games (since those are the only versions who works on our consoles), so this version of Minecraft probably didn't make it in France.
Soooo guess I'm gonna have to search somewhere else, and find a new ps1, which sucks but hey, that would be a nice addition to my collection.

If you ask when Minecraft was realased, most would say 2009. In reality, 2009 was when notch started development on the fan remake.
Gears? Cut content from the original that notch couldn't figure out how to implement. MD3 models? He wanted more cartoony graphics, but ended up keeping the blocky art style special map types? Extra game modes that were promised in the original, but were never added.

I'm loving the concept, but the fact that many features from recent versions of minecraft are present really turns me off in terms of immersion. There is no way in hell, that glow lichen, sweet berries, powdered snow, raw iron, and many other things would've been in a version of the game this early. The thing that breaks my immersion is the full release features (The End, hunger meter, etc) not being removed or changed to how they used to work in alpha/beta builds of the game (I don't mind certain things like berry bushes or even the small additions I saw listed in the page such as standing half slabs). I love almost nearly everything else about this though. The world generation having a lot of it's old quirks and the extreme antialiasing from older builds are great touches as an example. Plus, Java Minecraft needs controller support for accessibility reasons so when modpacks do that it's always a plus.
(EDIT: if you add in that food works like it used to instead of being a hunger bar, Instant download. There is no mod as far as I know that allows that even as an option within the world creation settings and that is SO ANNOYING. I liked the game loop of old minecraft far more, but I really enjoy a lot of the new additions in modern MC like the Nether material.)

@@quekitTechnically yes but in newer releases. It could be like Gran Turismo 2 or Spyro 3 where there are two ntsc versions or like Crash Warped where while there is only a NTSC and PAL version, since PAL came out later it fixed a few bugs of the original.
Minecraft's first public release was in 2009. This was supposedly released in 1998 by Mojang Studios, which wasn't founded until beta releases. so Mojang went back in time to release this? that would explain why powdered snow was in MCPSX but wasn't added until release 1.17. and why everything from 1.18 is in this precursor to pre-classic
its a story of a mojang employee that went in to a time slip, ported minecraft to ps1, and then released it as he went back to his own timeline. only limited copies were made, and thats why it was recalled very early.
