+Graphomite the thing is, nobody wanted a Speed Racer film, period. after the original series, there have been at least two atempts to reboot it, wich all sucked, and the fact that it came out at the time when people were just hating on the use of CGI just for the sake of hating it and not how well it was actually handled also was a big part of the negativity towards it
Yeah! I remember that's what all the backlash was about: it's a CGI-heavy movie, and people were just sick to death of movies having so much CGI in them. All in all, it just had really bad timing.
I've only seen it once and I remember it not leaving much of an impression on me, but I think I went into it with big expectations because it was the Wachowski Brothers (who now are the Wachowski Sisters) and I got disappointed. Everything they did after Matrix was just downhill...
Watching Speed Racer is IMAX is literally the best movie going experience I've ever had. When I'm billionaire tycoon, I will recreate that experience. Subscribed!
There's something really satisfying about knowing your not the only one who likes a thing that is clearly awesome and yet for some reason a lot of people think suck.
Speed Racer is definitely a movie worth watching. It's so much fun! I could watch it over and over and over again without getting bored. It really brings out the kid in you.
I had to stop the video at the motion line part and download the movie ASAP because I was already sold and didn't want to spoil anything else.... I watched it after dinner and a couple of beers and, MAN, if I enjoyed it! Thanks guys ;)!
+treiz It was pretty much the fact the trailers made it look like it was made to look like Spy Kids. There were much better scenes they should have used to promote the movie.
I didn't know much about the franchise when going in (but had some vague memories of the anime...) but I remember being excited for the movie because it was the Wachowski Brothers latest... and it didn't live up to that hype. Instead it came of as a mediocre movie that was stylised
I actually loved this movie. My dad loved the cartoon as a kid, so he got me on it when I grew up. So when this movie came out, we were quite excited. And I gotta say, I enjoyed this movie very much.
Wow!! I didn't know other people like Speed Racer! I recognize that the film is very uneven tonally and has some pacing issues (I always get little bored when John Goodman gives his speech to Speed right before he gets invited to the Grand Prix) but I find it to be infinitely rewatchable. Michael Giacchino's score is perfect, it compliments the movie perfectly. I've listened to that soundtrack more than Harry Potter, Star Wars, or any of the other soundtracks I have on my iPod. The races are INSANE they're so amazingly fun to watch after repeated viewings. The visuals in the film are so colorful and over the top. The movie is great. Glad to know that someone else appreciates it as much as I do.
I love this movie! Definitely one of my favorite movies. I saw it in theaters when I was 8 years old and I still love it at the age of 17. Speed Racer is a film that was ahead of it's time.
Speed Racer is so unreal that it made soo much sense! It’s ultimately my favourite movie until now. Just purchased Mach 4, 5, & 6 Hot wheels for my collection cuz my old Mach 6 was broken back when I was a kid since I almost played with it everyday for more than a year. Watched it at 7 and now I’m 21
Speed Racer is 100000000000000000/10. Watched it as a kid, got the wii game, adored the art and just wanted to get a remastered game that was closer to the movie in terms of visuals. I would give literally anything to see a trailer on the tv, with speed racer's iconic theme slowly playing in the background, finally announcing a return to the fantastic franchise.
Speed Racer is my favourite movie! When the mom starts her monologue in the final lap of the final race. I cry tears of joy EVERY... SINGLE... TIME without fail "When I see the things you do, you just take my breathe away" and the timing of Speed ramping into the air, everyone cheering!
My history with this film is one of tragedy: I was 10 years old when it came out, and I saw it in the theater, and thought it was the best movie ever. But then my older brother informed me that it actually terrible because it wasn't realistic like The Dark Knight, so I started to hate the film, cause 10 year olds who like kiddie movies don't get laid. Now I can recognize how wonderfully ambitious it is, I love a lot of things about it, but I have a hard time enjoying all 2 hours and 15 minutes of the run time because it is such an energetic film. I want to love it, I love watching it in bits and pieces, but as a film, it's not my favorite right now.
One of my favorite movies too! That ending scene is gripping at an action and emotional level! When Speed finished, car wrecked and all, I'm emotionally depleted. And the good guys won! Against all odds, the good guys got it right and their effort meant the world! A bit of redeeming escapism for a change.
It captures all I wanted from the series that I did see plus not much of what I didn't. Trixie was incredible, made me jealous of Speed. Racer X was every bit of what I wanted to see! He was dark and secretive while badass to so many young racers. They even let Speed think he figured him out to explain the show version of why he never saw it like the audience. The fighting was a perfect mix of campy and video game graphics. It was the fun movie to get nastolgic about.
I ended up going to see this alone in theaters bc my friends absolutely refused to see it. That last racing sequence always hits me where I live, it's just awesome. Plus the payoff on the Racer X arc at the end is totally satisfying.
+1 This movie is one of my favorites as well and it means a lot to me personally. The car designs for the Mach 4, 5 and 6 are absolutely phenomenal and my favorite cars designs of all time. I have almost all of the Hot Wheels they made for this movie and they bring me so much joy and satisfaction. Also after watching this movie as a 10 year old kid I started calling my grandpa "Pops" and it stuck forever, even to this day I will always call him that and it feels so natural I sometimes forget it's actually because of this movie.
The whole time I was watching, I was hoping you gentlemen would point out how "Speed Racer" is a perfect defense for making a movie based on an existing IP. You have the villain who is only out to make money and who proves that the entire industry exists to make money, the hero who wants to make art and struggles with the idea of if it is even possible to make art in a medium he learns is corrupt, and then the hero deciding that pursuing his art is worth doing even if he fails because he must be who he is. It is, literally, my favorite thing about the movie. Oh, and you are totally right, I didn't watch the film until it was on DVD, and then wondered what I had been doing with my life.
Speed Racer is fuckin awesome! Saw it twice in theaters with my friend, who also clearly loved it. The races are incredible and have all the spirit of the show, and the acting is perfect. As a really young kid I liked the anime before knowing what anime was, and there was a super cool arcade game with a Mach 5 steering wheel and some buttons, so I always had some enthusiasm for the series
The only time I watched Speed Racer was flipping back and forth on cable. I though "all right that was fun" but after watching this video I immediately re-watched it and can see why it is one of Arin's favorite movies.
I watched the movie the second day it came out. Me and my two friends were LITERALLY the only people in the cinema. The ticket checker even giggled when she saw what movie we were going to. We were 18 then... this movie is my everything.
I think I just love how much this movie stands out from other live action manga and comic adaptations. Instead of diluting it and making it gritty it goes full balls to the wall with insane visuals and crazy story. Like just the fact that his actual name is speed racer; in a lesser remake that would've just been a nickname.
Thank you sooo much for posting this video, i've been waiting a log while for a positive discussion on Speed Racer and you didn't disappoint. It's the character's that do it for me, Pops saying the kids being the most important thing since marrying his best friend and not making the same mistake with Speed that he did that he did with Rex, Speed and Trixie's relationship - there us just so much good with this film and it needs to be reevaluated!
I have been a huge fan of Speed Racer ever since I saw it for the very first time. I didn't have the honor of watching it in theaters and didn't see it until the next year when it aired on television, but I recorded it onto my DVR and watched it at least a dozen times before buying the disc and continuing to enjoy it. I bought it on Blu-ray recently, and it remains a favorite film of mine to this day.
I recently rewatched Speed Racer, and I realized just how much “adult stuff” I missed, I saw it so many times in the theaters as a kid despite hating loud noises, I don’t even remember how many times I’ve watched the movie, I love the anime, so I couldn’t get enough of this movie
This movie definitely needs more love, because their right while the movie looks simple but completely bonkers, it's completely complex, and the world building that you're put through isso organic but fast paced too it's incredible.
I recently rewatched Speed Racer and one thing that struck me the second time is how colorful it is. It's like I got used to all of the greys and browns that seem to permeate movies nowadays. The color in Speed Racer is fantastic, I wish all movies could have that much color and use it so well.
I really found a lot of joy in this film and I hadn't even seen the anime before. I don't usually like films like this but the amount of well constructed emotional elements laced throughout kept my eyes fixed on the screen. I really love it.
Speed Racer's probably the only good anime based film made with a Hollywood feel. There aren't that many that go all out and give you the same if not better experience than the show itself gave you. Dragonball Evolution was hilariously bad, and Guyver's 2nd movie is the only one that's watchable (the final fight scene in that movie is so good). There's probably more films based on anime, but those are the only ones I can remember, besides Speed Racer (which is a lot of fun).
Well, The Matrix was pretty heavily inspired by anime. Pretty much directly lifted a whole bunch of shots and themes from Ghost in the Shell, which is the movie the Wachowskis used to sell the producers on the idea. If you look at how they filmed everything, they really used a lot of the camera angles and editing techniques you'd typically see in Japanese animation. Also, if I remember, the whole final fight in the third film looked just like DBZ without the giant energy blasts everywhere.
frobie54 Well, yeah, but it was still it's own thing. Like, if you read the manga for GITS and see the movie, they don't even feel like the same thing AT ALL. Like, the manga feels more up beat and more humorous compared to the more darker and serious tone of the film. The same happened with The Matrix and the GITS film; similar themes and style, but completely different ways of portraying it. I love that. But, aside from that, I meant direct adaptations of Japanese animation and stories made by foreign countries, specifically the US. Aside from Speed Racer and, probably, the 2nd Guyver movie, straight up adaptations of anime and manga sucks (at least the ones I can remember).
ranwolf76 I haven't seen that one, and it was based on a novel that has a manga adaptation (drawn by the artist of Death Note I think). I've heard good things about it so I really want to see it.
Speed racer is a movie about a little brother learning to be a big brother, about an artist trying to be himself in an industry that's stacked against him. It's a candy-colored kaleidoscope of psychedelic surrealism. oh and it's a kids movie about racecars.
Dudes! Yes!! I saw it in the theater and I bought the bluray asap. It is an incredibly strong film and listening to you enjoy talking about it makes me want to go plunk in the blu. Oh, and the great Michael Giacchino score is noteworthy as well. Such a fun flick. It's nice to hear someone loving on it for once. Thanks guys!
The first time I ever heard Arin talk about Speed Racer I literally cheered because I love that movie to bits and that was the first time I'd heard anyone who liked it as much as I did.
A factor that makes speed racer such a great movie that you gentlemen forgot to mention is the music. The music is constantly driving with staccato guitar eighth notes, the rythm section often mimics the pulse of galloping horses, and then there's the four note theme that leaves you anticipating more of the melody to arrive. I'm speaking of course about the four notes that supply the rhythm to the words," go speed racer". With the rest note interrupting each repeat it drives an anticipation. The composer, Michael Giacchino is a certifiable genius whose work includes The Incredibles, the latest Star Trek films and the latest Spider-Man films. I have the Speed Racer soundtrack album on my phone and regularly listen to it. If you know the movie listening to the soundtrack can bring you immediately into the scenes that they are the backtrack of. Bloody genius work!!!
SO great to finally see people appreciate the movie. I had the privilege of being an accountant on this film and the love that went in to it was obvious from the start. One thing that a lot of people aren't aware of is this: The announcer for the beginning races is Pete Fernandez. He was the American voice actor that did the voice for the 60's version of "Speed Racer". Yet another homage to the source material. =)
Royalton was also in V for Vendetta, he was the reporter guy. Speed Racer is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s only behind interstellar by a little bit.
I saw Speed Racer shortly after it came out and didn't think much of it. Then I heard Arin say it was his favorite movie on Game Grumps so I decided to rewatch it. I don't think it had the spirit of Speed Racer like they do, but I do believe it had the spirit of F-Zero, which is awesome, and because of it I loved the movie to death after the rewatch. So now I show it to all my friends who haven't seen it. Seriously, tho, I think it would have had a much better reception if the characters were changed to Captain Falcon or something. People would have known what to expect more and I believe it would have kicked ass in the box office as well as become a cult classic.
As if I couldn't like Arin more. Speed Racer has ALWAYS been one of my all-time favourite movies. The visuals, the PERFECT casting and some amazing moments (can't believe you didn't talk about Pops Racer's wrestling fight with the ninja!) really made this movie for me. And for those wondering, NO, I did NOT get any seizures watching this movie in theaters. Admittedly, some of the plot did get a bit confusing on first viewing, but after multiple viewings on DVD, I was able to understand it more. This film is right up there with Scott Pilgrim vs The World, How to Train Your Dragon 3, and The Three Stooges as one of my all-time favourites.
Speed Racer is such a good movie. I remember me, my best friend and her mom went to the movies to see Sex and the City. And me and my friend didn't want to leave afterwards so we snuck into Speed Racer and we loved it. The final race had me so pumped. And the visuals were crazy and bright. I just loved it. I own it on DVD haha. I'm so happy you chose this movie. More people need to see it because it's worth a watch.
I worked at a movie theater from 2007 to 2010 and I could see any movie for free. Speed Racer is one of two movies that I didn't see on the big screen during this time and always regretted missing out. The other is Sunshine.
one of my favorite films also. in paticular i love the scene where racer X is chasing the fixers truck. gets in front and is driving backwards dodging missiles. then the camera changes to the side on view with the streaks of fire as the missiles explode mid-air between the two cars. Amazing. Only criticsm is that quick-cut to the racer garage after the casa-christo rally where you find out togokhan betrays them and you feel like theres a scene missing.

after the original series, there have been at least two atempts to reboot it, wich all sucked, and the fact that it came out at the time when people were just hating on the use of CGI just for the sake of hating it and not how well it was actually handled also was a big part of the negativity towards it
DarkZide8 - I thought Cloud Atlas was good...
Honestly, this movie was ahead of its time. Put it in theaters now and I swear it's the best thing you've ever seen.
Watching Speed Racer is IMAX is literally the best movie going experience I've ever had. When I'm billionaire tycoon, I will recreate that experience. Subscribed!
I'm in total agreement with you guys. I saw Speed Racer three times in theaters, and it's pretty much the embodiment of everything I love about film.
Speed Racer has the best transitions in film history. It's definitely in my top 10.
Wow, Arin and Michael's coats are good. Like REALLY good!
It seems the conversation is shifting away from coats. Fuckin'. Panic!
I had to stop the video at the motion line part and download the movie ASAP because I was already sold and didn't want to spoil anything else.... I watched it after dinner and a couple of beers and, MAN, if I enjoyed it! Thanks guys ;)!
God it's been years since I saw this movie, I need to rewatch it again sometime.....
+Terry Jones Five minutes into the video and I'm already checking Netflix.
Sunset Hero And if I don't have Netflix?
+Terry Jones Then we both don't get to watch it on Netflix. It isn't on rotation. Redbox?
My favorite scene, to this day, is still when the ninja backs into Pa Racer and it Dramatic Zooms to his Wrestling Championship Ring.
I loved Speed Racer, never understood why it got so much hate...
+treiz It was pretty much the fact the trailers made it look like it was made to look like Spy Kids. There were much better scenes they should have used to promote the movie.
My family can't either
All the green screen and cheese, even though it was intentional campiness.
I didn't know much about the franchise when going in (but had some vague memories of the anime...) but I remember being excited for the movie because it was the Wachowski Brothers latest... and it didn't live up to that hype. Instead it came of as a mediocre movie that was stylised
Same here ,why did it get so much hate i love the movie so much!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Speed Racer so much. I thought for years that it was kind of against everything to love this film.
Arin is my spirit animal. I adore this movie no matter how much it's bashed.
Just rewatched Speed Racer for the first time since I saw it in theatres and wow. It really is so so so so so good.
''Eeeuugeeheutsutseu it's a movie'' ~ Arin Handsome
One of the most underrated films in history
I watched Speed Racer right before watching this. Its a fantastic movie, its super exciting and, like Arin said, it definitely had a lot of heart!
So I'm not alone in my love for this movie. I seriously thought I was the only person on earth who genuinely loved this movie.
Speed Racer is my favourite movie! When the mom starts her monologue in the final lap of the final race. I cry tears of joy EVERY... SINGLE... TIME without fail
"When I see the things you do, you just take my breathe away" and the timing of Speed ramping into the air, everyone cheering!
This is one of my favorite movies ever!! It really inspired me to become a filmmaker.
One of my favorite movies too! That ending scene is gripping at an action and emotional level! When Speed finished, car wrecked and all, I'm emotionally depleted. And the good guys won! Against all odds, the good guys got it right and their effort meant the world! A bit of redeeming escapism for a change.
is this the guy that was in that jontron video with final hallway xiii?
+Vinny D Yes, I was that guy.
awesome
+Belated Media Yeah going from your Star Wars was Good video then to this vid where you're wearing glasses I was like "wait a minute" XD
+Belated Media HOLY SHIT!
+Vinny D The game's just playing itself jon. THE GAME"S JUST PLAYING ITSELF JON!
Man, this was the best Movie Talk. It's really fun hearing Arin talk about things he loves.
I still don't get the hate this movie gets, Speed Racer is awesome.
That accidental reference at 15:16. Arin gets it, I don't think Michael knew what he said XD
I'm so glad you reviewed this movie! I've always loved this movie and I always felt like the only one that did! Thank you for this!
I saw it in the theater, and my entire review after I got into my car was, "I fucking love John Goodman."
I wish this series was still ongoing. Really love hearing people talk about their favorite movies.
Finally, the video that got people to realize this is a good movie 8 years ago, and 6 years too late.
I really liked glad I saw it. The filmmakers clearly understood and loved the source material. That's what made it great
Single *most* under-rated film of all time.
Speed Racer is awesome, I see every time I can
Thank you! I am not alone! Speed Racer was one of the main reasons I bought a blu-ray player, it's so damned beautiful.
I tend to use RottenTomatoes a lot. That said, I just don't get why Speed Racer has such low score. The movie is fantastic.
The only time I watched Speed Racer was flipping back and forth on cable. I though "all right that was fun" but after watching this video I immediately re-watched it and can see why it is one of Arin's favorite movies.
Speed Racer shaped my life in many ways I didn't know until I watched it again as an adult. Now I watch it every now and then
I watched the movie the second day it came out.
Also, if I remember, the whole final fight in the third film looked just like DBZ without the giant energy blasts everywhere.
frobie54
Well, yeah, but it was still it's own thing.
Edge of Tomorrow is based on a Manga. I thought it was a decent movie
ranwolf76
I haven't seen that one, and it was based on a novel that has a manga adaptation (drawn by the artist of Death Note I think). I've heard good things about it so I really want to see it.
ranwolf76 Edge of Tomorrow wasn't decent. IT FUCKING KICKS ASS.
Speed Racer is a goddamn masterpiece, idc what anyone says!
Speed Racer is my favorite movie.
John Goodman is good for cartoon movies, like REALLY good.
Yes, this video has so many good parts about it. Love Speed Racer and Egoraptor!
I'm soooo glad you guys love this film!
I adore Speed Racer and I'm glad that other people do too! I only wish I saw it in theatres...
I freakin LOVE this movie. Just from the sheer amount of Eye Candy alone. It just hit me in all the right spots. Absolutely a top favorite.
This movie is so beautiful, I love it so much. Every single race has its own special artist style to it, so cool!
Speed racer is a amazing movie. The tracks were beautifuly done. And they were epic. I probably watched this movie more then 25 times.
I worked at a movie theater from 2007 to 2010 and I could see any movie for free. Speed Racer is one of two movies that I didn't see on the big screen during this time and always regretted missing out. The other is Sunshine.
I actually liked this movie and saw it instead of Iron Man. yay! Unpopular opinion!
one of my favorite films also. in paticular i love the scene where racer X is chasing the fixers truck. gets in front and is driving backwards dodging missiles. then the camera changes to the side on view with the streaks of fire as the missiles explode mid-air between the two cars.
Amazing. Only criticsm is that quick-cut to the racer garage after the casa-christo rally where you find out togokhan betrays them and you feel like theres a scene missing.
They make an essential point here: SPEED RACER captured the spirit of the original show (even if the aesthetic is different.)
I watched Speed Racer after seeing this video and I'm so glad I did, it's so good!! I cried at the end 😅
my icon obligates me to comment on this lmaooo
they hit the nail on the head for all the reasons i love this movie so much. really nice to see people building up one of my fav movies of all time :>
