In case you guys actually read this: Thank you very very much for this mention. I remember the early FXhome days vividly and it was absolutely influentual to me growing up in that place. The inspiration was mutual and you‘ve obviously surpassed me in everything a long time ago. I still have a lot of the old fxhome videos on my harddrive and you were, even back then when you started, a huge inspiration.
All the best wishes for you guys, your friends and families from switzerland (not austria). 😛
(Oh, and: It was composited frame by frame on photoshops „filmstrip“ format, which was basically a huuuuuuge file containing all frames from the top down. Times were veeeeery different.) 😀

I'm so happy to see people who appreciate the jaw dropping VFX in speed racer. I love this movie and it blows my mind that it gets so little attention. That final race is visually brain melting amazing.

It was too far away from the original cartoon. They were relying on nostalgia of the (at that point) 30 somethings that watched it back in the early 80s, but They changed it TOO much.

    • @supersizesenpai
      @supersizesenpai 3 роки тому +108

@@ryanatorryanson9535 😂😂😂 If there is one anime that would need a revamp for the new age its Speed Racer. You say "too much was change" but I disagree. Honestly outside of the vibrant colors (obviously) I really don't see what else is so different.
They had every main character including the damn monkey. Which (if I'm being honest) would be a hard sell in any movie but they somehow pulled it off without it being cringey or distracting. The movie also had the action filled racing with advanced high powered vehicles just like in the anime. Sure the movie is going to be an upgrade to the anime because the anime came out in the 60's.
What people seem to forget when they criticize this movie is that the anime was as goofy as it was action filled and this movie gave us every ounce of that. So I'm not really understanding why you think so much was changed when they've clearly added everything from the original anime. I honestly think you have no idea what you are talking about but whatever.

@Anonymous-73 That is true, however, and especially in the earlier years of CGI, realistic graphics will eventually start looking outdated, even amazingly made CGI will show its date sooner or later
However, CGI or animation in general that focuses on having strong art direction will never feel outdated. Take this very movie for example, or anime like Gurren Lagann or movies like Into the spiderverse, if you didnt know about them beforehand it would be pretty hard to "date" them based on the animation quality.

I have been trying desperately for years to tell people how incredible Speed Racer is. After I saw it in the cinemas, I went to the box office and bought another ticket for the next session and saw it twice in a row. It's one of my favorite movies and no one in my immediate circles has any love for it for reasons that I have never been able to understand. I started to think I was crazy. I can't express how much it means to me, after over 10 years of holding onto this, to hear people gush over it in the way I have ALWAYS thought it deserves to be. You have made my flipping year.

It very obviously borrowed heavily from The matrix but what made it so great as opposed to most others is that they knew it did it on purpose and used it so well

speed racer was such an underrated film like honestly. it was one of the most stylistic films of the time and still holds up today. it achieved the look that everyone wishes the anime live-action remakes had.

Hey I have a suggestion for a guest, Ian Hubert. He is a pioneer in small budget production vfxs. As for a shot to react to, Klaus animated movie. Apparently it’s not just hand drawn but also appears to be. I don’t really know actually either way it’s got a fantastic art style and direction as well as originality.

the thing freddie mentioned about the emotional energy being expressed through imagery is exactly why anime is so great sometimes, the japanese anime film, A Silent Voice, gives a really good example. near the end, the main character, who had basically shut himself off from the world begins to open himself up to the world again. in the film his connection being cut-off is built around the fact that to him, people's faces are blocked off with giant x marks on their heads, which also symbolises his tendency to even avoid looking at people directly in the face/eye which is also shown in the film. anyways, at the end, he covers his ears, because he's also "cut off" the sound of the outside world, and he slowly lifts his face, and drops his hands, at the same time the x marks on everyone's face around him falls off like a piece of paper, floating on the wind, and the moment is accentuated by the music lifting up to a crescendo of "victory" or joy, and the sound of the actual crowd around him also comes into focus, creating a cacophony of sound showcasing him reconnecting with the world around him in sooooo many different ways, showcasing his metaphorical mental and emotional changes, its honestly an incredibly brilliant piece of art.

Wont lie, the video that got me into video editing was Freddie's Cereal Killer. Before I found that video I thought UA-cam was just a place for short and funny clips, but when I found that video and watched it multiple times I was amazed. The part that blew me away was the fact that there was a behind the scene video showing off how it was all done. I think I started studying video editing for a good while after that, watching whatever behind the scene videos I could get my hands from them, learning what to do and not to do, everything.
I never got super deep into video editing honestly, 3D stuff is still far from being done in my mind but what I learned back then was something I could use for a long time coming.
Oh also Freddie needs to grow a Viking beard, braid and all.

I recently saw speed racer and my dad came in and was so happy when he saw the TV. This was his favourite childhood TV series when he was growing up and seeing that movie come to life got him through a joyful reaction. He told me everything he knew about speed racer and how his car worked in the show and I was also pretty impressed with the visuals of this movie. Thank you for reviewing this visual gem!
