I just changed my mind about having my procedure done at a local "wellness center". The "doctor" never asked for my family medical history or suggested any tests to see if I had any underlying problems that might be an issue. I have spider veins but my larger varicose veins are what I'm really worried about. They make leg exercises difficult and they seem to be ulcerating. This video has convinced me to look for a specialist.

I had laser surgery on my terrible varicose veins that were primarily on the inside of my knees. they were extremely embarrassing. The laser was the best thing I have ever done for myself. One leg at a time. Recovery is tiring if you work on your feet. If you have them, get to a vascular surgeon and get them burned off. You will be very, very happy.

My primary Doctor referred me to a cardiologist because of leg swelling. I have bulging varicose veins. He sent me for a vein ultrasound to rule out clots and also some heart evaluation studies. My heart was strong. He did not recommend any treatment because he said "you never know you might need them for cardiac reasons. Apparently if you have bad veins to the heart they can strip leg veins them and use them. He said too many take the vein stripping or other treatments too lightly. Cardiologists are the most trained to do vein surgery. He recommended support hose and prescribed a diuretic. This is just my perspective. I'm no authority but for now will live with my bulging varicose veins.

No cardiac surgeon would use a varicose vein as a bypass conduit. Cardiac re vascularization is usually 1 stent, 2 internal mammary artery, 3 arm artery, 4 vein. Cardiologists should stick to the heart.

Although my spider veins were very webby, dark and obvious on my inner ankles/feet, luckily, mine were not too severe.
I was able to reverse the appearance of them completely, by committing to walking 5+ miles daily and rolling the bottoms of my feet with a tennis ball 5 mins/day. I still do these routines daily for maintenance, and they are very relaxing to do. Moving your body daily is very important!

Cellulite, painful heavy legs, varicose veins etc. It’s so tough sometimes and I can’t even wear tights or leggings anymore because my legs get soo painful! Dr. Dray, thanks so much for this video! I am 64 years old and have a family history of vein disease. I first noticed my varicose veins when I was 28 and pregnant with my second child. They weren't painful, but pretty ugly. I never went to a vascular surgeon because I had heard terrible stories from various women in my family who had had their veins stripped. It wasn't until about four years ago that I finally decided to see a vascular surgeon, specializing in varicose veins, due to pain in my lower legs. My doctor has changed my life! Over these last four years, I have had numerous radio frequency ablation procedures, and phlebectomy in both my upper and lower left and right legs. It's been quite a process, and although it sounds terrible, it really wasn't painful. And all of these procedures were covered by insurance. Today, I have no leg pain and they look so much better. I'm so glad that I finally did something about my vein disease, I just wish I had done something years ago.

I've had spider veins for many years. I just recently had scleratherapy (2 rounds) and the results were great. Unfortunately I had to have many needle injections just because of the way my veins are connected. It was so very painful so my dermatologist tried a laser for round 3 and it was so much better. I hope the results are as impressive as scleratherapy. The hose were almost impossible to get on but they make my legs feel good. Bought the Jobst brand.

Was nice to see you talk about this. I had my left leg vein stripped way back in 2003 (I was only in my early 20s) and a phlebectomy on my right calf following a couple years of symptoms including phlebitis which I had been managing moderately by wearing graduated compression stockings. The recovery from that procedure was harsh and required a general anesthetic. I agree wearing stockings daily are uncomfortable and also left me with skin issues and itching. I managed to go almost 20 years without major problems until a couple years ago and a couple of months ago had my right saphenous vein removed via rf ablation. This was a much easier out patient procedure done under local, the difference was night and day in terms of recovery, only needing a week and I was exercising again within one month.
Unfortunately I still have some skin issues on my calves from some superficial veins and swelling of my feet which I think could be solved with sclerotherapy. I will investigate this option soon.

I got my first varicose veins when I was aged 15 and working after school in a cafe. I was super fit, very active and perfect bodyweight. As I aged I put on weight and developed more VV. I recently tried a "glue plug" option but it didn't work at all. VV are hereditary in my family. I have huge, blue, knotty, ropey varicose veins now.

My father has varicose veins all on his lower legs & tops of feet. It never bothered him (no pain), which is why our internist said, to please leave it alone. Many years later, a colleague of my mom decided to have it done (pure cosmetically, as it did not give him pain either) and he ended up being in pain afterwards. He would never do it again. My dad is 75 now and has been living with this since his late 20s.

At the end of her life, she ended up having very low flow in her legs and had to get one leg amputated as she developed gangrene. They said they believed it to be related to too many veins being removed when she was younger.

I wish information was more readily available about other possible causes of varicose veins before I sought treatment. I found a vascular surgeon, had an ultrasound, got radio frequency ablation, and a phlebectomy 3 weeks later. A couple years later I got another varicose vein. I have new doctor now who diagnosed me with May Thurner Syndrome which was the cause of varicose veins for me. If I went longer without finding this about myself, there is an extremely high chance I would have had deep vein thrombosis/blood clot. I encourage all people seeking treatment for varicose veins to search for a vascular surgeon familiar with this condition as it is easy to miss and the consequences can be severe.

Folks, you don't need to see a board certified dermatologist to treat spider veins. You also don't need an ultrasound to rule out underlying causes of spider veins. She is referring to the evaluation of varicose veins and yes, those other providers are appropriate. But if you just have spider veins and just want them to go away, it's perfectly safe to see a Nurse practitioner or nurse who has been trained to perform the procedure. A good provider will refer if the issue is more than just spider veins...

I enjoy wearing short skirts and shorts in general. I don't want to wear compression socks. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I don't go out any more and at work I feel awful 😞 when I have to wear what I don't want to especially during summer. My spider veins are not so strong but they give my legs a feeling of being dirty.

I’ve used Compression stockings for years particularly after numerous varicose vein sclerotherapy treatments by a vascular surgeon. I recently developed contact dermatitis from them and am faced with additional sclerotherapy. HELP? I’m using Sarna for sensitive skin and cera ve anti itch cream. But the compression stockings continue to be an irritant.

I wear thigh-high compression stockings. They have rubber grips that help them stay up on my chicken legs. The 20-30 mmHg compression pressure is where it's at. Athletic socks ain't enough. I HAVE to wear them in 4+ hour flights and hikes.

When I tried compression socks-no matter what the socks were made of-my shins would then itch all night and I read somewhere the compression socks could be the cause. At any rate, as soon as so stopped wearing them-no more itching. I shouldn’t have bought so many pairs-I thought I was going to be wearing them all the time!

I have broken capillaries on my cheeks that I cannot get rid of. I'm 55 and have had hot flashes for 20 years so..... I got an IPL treatment or two from a local derm and it made little difference, and now they're back even worse. Ideas? I'd love to wear less makeup...

Find a different:) dermatologist that performs VBeam lasers. My broken capillaries were from sun damage and were v v bad. They are entirely gone now. You might have to do several depending, but so worth it. Good luck.

I work as a Customer Care Advisor and I sit most of the day. I was also 298 pounds. I lost 70 pounds (as of August 2021) and started noticing bulging veins on the back of my calves. It makes me feel very uncomfortable as it is ugly :( I haven't worn socks yet. I also wanted to start slerotherapy procedures to remove them but a lot of people have told me not to start as it will just keep moving to another vein. Is that correct? My doctor claims I could have issues in the future. I walk also a lot and move on a daily basis as well as keep my legs elevated when I can. It hasn't helped. I'm self-conscious now wearing clothes that show my legs. It was not an issue before.
