I started developing telangiectasia a few years after a Scleroderma diagnosis. I always had beautiful, flawless skin until then. They have become more abundant over the years and have covered my face, neck, chest and upper arms. I even have some on the back of my neck and behind my ears. It frustrates me that treatments are not covered by insurance because they are considered cosmetic. My whole appearance has changed and maybe it is cosmetic, but it is a blow to my self-esteem when going out in public. I never used to wear make up and now I find myself slathering on as much full coverage as I can. One day, I went to work without any make up on, and one of my coworkers thought I had the chickenpox or maybe even the measles. It was humiliating and embarrassing! Thank you Dr. Dray for this video. I appreciate you educating us all!
My blood vessels on my left cheek has gotten worse. I did use St. Ives scrub, the wrong skincare, in the 80’s we baked with baby oil and sun in. My parents smoked in the house. Both my grandmother’s and my father had fair skin. My rosacea started in my 20’s. The redness isn’t as bad but the blood vessels are still there.
St. Ives scrub caused mine, even tho it's not really noticeable if I don't look at my magnifying mirror. Just learned in the last year that it's so bad for your skin. I tossed all mine.
I'm a 70 yr old woman who takes HRT (estrogen & progesterone), AND I have rosacea. In my youth, I was a sun worshipper, and a smoker. I do have broken capillaries around my nose & mouth. I really should see a dermatologist.
There is nothing boring about etiology/root causes. And thank you for the workout tip w/ regards to flushing. I have rosacea and my face feels like its covered in battery acid after working out. Ty.
Thank you for this! I don’t have really any sun damage; but I noticed them around my nose folds when I pushed too hard with a comedone extractor. They haven’t gone away since, I’ve learned my lesson!
I was just taking notice of how every night I get pretty intense facial flushing as a 20 year old and I was researching rosacea. This video came at a perfect time for me. Thank you!
I have the same problem. Redness progresses as day goes along and worse at night. It is NOT allergy to sheets or doing anything different at night other than getting through the day
I have had primary Sjogren's syndrome since my 20s (unusually young) and I tend to get telangiectasias, alas. Of course they're the least of my health problems, but it's good to know about treatment options, so thanks! Have never smoked, don't drink, and I've worn daily SPF since my 20s. All vitally important advice.
I used to have these growing up. They were blue and red around the fat of my cheeks. There were only 2 of us who had them in our class. We were brown skinned, definitely not fair skinned Asians. For some reason, I outgrew them in my late 30s. But as a teenager, it was a source of insecurity. Some classmates often pointed it out along with our chubby cheeks. It made me self-conscious 😊
Really interesting points about how some medical interventions can affect different levels of skin! Particularly now with the rise of mental health concerns, I would love to see a video on how commonly prescribed psychiatric medications may affect the skin, and how these may be best managed.
Dr.Dray is right, knowing the cause if half the battle. I had laser to get rid of my facial blood vessels with great success, but they came back within a year because i flush while working out. There are treatments (expensive) but prevention is key.
I just had a consultation with a dermatologist about removing broken blood vessels around the nose, which were caused by using St. Ives facial scrub. They recommended at least 5 treatments a month apart by a vascular laser, $350 a treatment. The problem is they said that it's pretty much guaranteed that the condition will come back. Some lucky people can go a few years before they need treatments again but others will only have a few months. What's the point then? You'll have to heal after each treatment (they can bruise), then do it again next month, then heal, then do it again... And it will only last a short while, from a few months to maybe a couple of years, then do it all over again. Basically, living your life with a constantly reinjured and rehealing area in the middle of your face. The dermatologist said that there is no permanent solution.
I just spent 1200 on 3 laser treatments for broken capillaries around my nose. The board certified dermatologist used the newest laser made specifically for treatments such as this. Called excel V. Total waste of money. Not one bit of improvement. Just trying to spread the word.
Yes same here. I had 9 laser treatments. Very slight improvement but within weeks it looked the same as it did previously. I am going to try red vine extract as it strengthens capillaries, taking it internally. I used a gel with it in but it didn't do much but I have heard the tablets do help.
@@cookiehoarder5967 I have used a serum with liquorice. It helped the redness but not the broken veins. Sorting out my gut issues/ Candida helped the rosacea also but the veins are persistent.
Yes, I've struggled with this disfiguring skin conditions for over 40 years! I live in southern CA., and the dermatologist I went to charges $500.00 a treatment and you need to go at least three times. At this point, I can no longer afford the treatments.
I fave a few broken vessels around my nose but they're not terrible and my foundation does a good job of covering them up. Thanks for the helpful information, as always. Love your pretty floral top. Looks beautiful on you! Happy Thursday, Dr Dray!! I hope you have a tranquil evening. 💞
What a fantastic video -- so detail oriented! We just don't hear this from other dermatologists, Thank you so much, Dr. Dray! This is one to listen to again and again!
Your videos are such a thoughtful act of service. Thank you for providing such in depth information to people who may not have any other way to access it. You are a gem.
Thank you so much for this information! I am 44 and this is definitely something that I struggle with. It could be worse but I have them in the crease of my nose, and around my cheekbone area. Since adolescence, I have been conscious of taking care of my skin, but I clearly wasn't educated. My childhood summers were spent out in the sun. Sunscreen was generally something that I used after I got burnt, so that it would not get worse. Throughout my 20s and 30s Saint Ives walnut scrub was never not in my shower. I used it daily. Like so many, I wish I had known this information in my 20s. Today my skin care is simple, and expensive yet surprisingly effective. I wash my face with CeraVe hydrating cleanser. At night I use Olay retinol 24 advanced along with Laroche-Posay Lipikar body cream. In the morning I use SUNSCREEN along with CeraVe moisturizing cream. I'm amazed at how much more effective this lineup is, as opposed to the expensive department store products. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I love your videos!
Thank you Dr Dray! In my past I was a chronic heavy drinker, smoker, sun worshipper AND face scrubber. Not that I’ve gotten my life together, I can see that the broken capillaries do look better, but I think I’m now at the permanent part. Currently I’m wearing sunscreen, avoiding sun, using OTC retinoid, hoping that my skin will thicken up some. I got laid off this year but once I have enough money, I will look into laser.
I hear ya! That sun is a bummer. I’ve heard the BB laser was awesome for removing sun damage. It did wonders on my friend’s décolleté. I want to look into it too soon.
Julie, step by step. 💪 You’ve been through a lot and it's awesome that you take care of yourself! I wish you all the best and cross my fingers for a new job. Stay safe 💜
lasers only make the capillaries smaller, they don't eliminate them and you will have to go in for repeat treatments every 4-5 months unfortunately its permanent, i have tried every expensive vitamin, mineral, herbal, cream, gel, etc
I have telangiectasias due to rosacea. I received two IPL treatments over the winter, and it made a huge difference. After IPL, many of my broken capillaries are gone, others are less noticeable, flushing isn't as bad, and background redness is greatly improved. My plan is to get one IPL treatment every winter. IPL and sunscreen are my rosacea holy grails!
I very much appreciate all the detail that you go into. I learned so much. I had telengiectasia on the side of my nose, and it took to laser treatments to completely eradicate it. That was 15 years ago. Now I know what probably caused it!! Thank you for thorough education.
I can confirm that incorrect use of topical steroids causes rosacea and telangiactasias, mine were triggered by the long term use of the infamous Mario Badescu cream that contained undisclosed steroids... 10 years I'm still battling all the side effects. Thanks for another very useful video, Dr. Dray!
I just listened to a podcast discussing that lawsuit last week. I'd never heard about it before but I was never a fan of Mario Bedescu products already. When I worked at sephora I'd always roll my eyes at girls buying those face sprays by him lol.
Wow, I didn't know about this! I used a couple of MB products but I don't remember which ones. An Ulta employee actually recommended it to me for my Rosacea. 🙄
This was excellent! I’m glad to see this specific topic as it can be a symptom in so many (as you mentioned) other conditions. It’s nice to see people being taught correct terminology and explaining the science! Your energy was great and you seemed excited to present the info! Loved it.
I found your channel as I began trying to better my skin care about 2 years ago. I have autoimmune diseases that make skincare more difficult. In my attempt to help my skin I began using a ceramide serum about a year ago and my blood vessels that were prominent on the apples of my cheeks lessened. I doing even use cover-up on that area any more. The serum has a lightening ingredient (aiming to combat melasma). I assumed that’s what was dealing with the blood vessels. But after your educational video - it was likely stopping my birth control pills. Thank you for this video! I don’t find these boring. Keep them coming!
That's great to hear they vessles have lightened up! Do you mind sharing the ceramics serum you used, I've tried so many products nothing is helping :)
Thank you! I have noticed a significant increase in these and couldn’t understand why. Now I have a better understanding of the root causes and perhaps how to eliminate or at least reduce the occurrence. For almost 10 years I have been on a low dose HP medicine, underwent radiation therapy for cancer, and a lot of sun exposure when I was a child. My skin is fairly brown so I was surprised to see these red spider like veins! Knowledge is powerful 👏🏽💃🏽✊🏽
Yes, I struggle with T on my cheeks. Thanks for mentioning Calcium channel blockers as I have been taking one. I have always had sensitive skin. Thanks for honestly sharing.
I developed these on the sides of my nose from wearing glasses that were too tight. I usually just cover up with makeup but I’ve always wondered what else I could do so I’ll be looking into a laser treatment. Thanks so much Dr. Dray you’re always so helpful!! 😊
Ipl laser. The green diode handpiece focuses on rosecea and telagentasias. Im a NYS Medical Aesthetician and laser instructor at a esthetics school. I treat lots of sun damaged patients.
I use sunscreen everyday since 10 years. Since I'm pregnant, actually 40 weeks now, those vessels appeared around the 6th month. I've never flushed before, I was very surprised to wake up with those rosy cheeks. I don't use scrubs nor chemical peels. Actually my skin changed from mixed to dry.. so yes.. hormonal cause 😊
Thank you for addressing this. I really feel I can make better decisions on the products I purchase since watching your videos. I certainly appreciate it. I don't spend money on useless skin care. 😄
I have a small one of these on my cheek from one of those scrub gizmos. Also probably alcohol use as well (which I just stopped. Yay!). Didn’t realize it was bad for me till I discovered you Dr Dray. My derm recommended her use of Cutera laser. Haven’t done it yet as I’m also going to see about maylar bag treatment first. Man, getting old really isn’t for sissy’s. But so greatful for this channel. Wish I’d known all this years ago. Especially sunscreen.
thank you for talking about this. I had these around my nose and a little on my cheeks I started wearing sunscreen and using tretinoin but I also found products that finally don't irritate my skin and I don't notice the blood vessels anymore because it looked so bad and made me self conscious a bit. thanks again for talking about this.
@@christinagarrett7760 sunscreen and tretinoin plus using the cetaphil gentle clear salicylic acid cleanser has helped with the redness plus the cetaphil redness relieving night moisturizer and I also use the 5% urea cream by zeroid.
Synchronicity. I was just thinking about broken blood vessels the other day. Yes, I have a few but nothing serious. Thanks for covering this and Happy Thursday 🌞🌸
My Adrenal glands shut down after surgical menopause and that was probably the worst time of my life. I was on Steroids for 7 years until the doctors weaned me off of them and my Adrenal glands were working on their own. I hated that time and I hated the steroids. Thank you for dumping your knowledge out for us. My daughter has one little pink vein on the tip of her nose and she's only 31. She doesn't know how to get rid of it. I forwarded this to her.
Also be careful with microcurrent. I had an experience with a refreshed NuFace device. I only had one broken capillary (I had it for 40 years) and now I have dozens of tiny ones on my cheeks. I still use microcurrent as it is fantastic. But if it shocks you, stop! If I had money I would get the laser procedure. I now have to wear some kind of cover up. ☹
Aaah super informative for me. I have these with rosacea and have had these since I was a child. I finally know that the prominent veins and redness arent going anywhere, thank you. I appreciate this video so much and all the detail you go into!!!!
I’ve been searching causes for the unsightly Telangiectasia on my face and nose. I have them rather prominently and have fair skin that flushes easily. Thank you for explaining the underlying causes and effective treatments-very helpful and useful.
I’ve had a few of these around my nose for most of my life. Twice I had the IPL treatment. Both times they went away, but after awhile they came back. Glad to know there are other laser treatments.
I love all of your videos! I was recommended V beam laser by my dermatologist for my blood vessels around the nose from rosacea. Any advice on V beam laser?
Wow, this was super informative! I have this on my nose and chin as did my mother, in the same exact spots. I never knew what it was or what caused it.
I am all of this above 😢I flush constantly and yes I have these little veins. Unfortunately flushing is something I can’t do much about with having PCOS and an Underactive Thyroid 🤦♀️
I don’t drink, don’t smoke, protect my skin from the sun and avoid staying in the sun and I still have these broken capillaries :( I’ve had them since I was a teenager
They can occur from picking pimples, a bug bite, excessively blowing the nose, facial flushing from exercise, hot tub or winter wind etc. The causes can be endless. Falls under the category of trauma mentioned in the video. Affects more people with fair, delicate skin and light hair with blue or green eyes ie. Irish, Scottish, some Brits
Thankyou Dr Dray 🙏 I always learn something new from every video. My lupus that caused those horrid veins!💡 Ever since I started watching your videos I threw away harsh scrubs and stripping clay masks and anything perfumed. Now I do layers of sunscreen, big hats (with face covering especially when driving), UV blocking gloves, a good plain rich moisturiser (QV), and Tret, my skin looks so much better. I still have flares but my skin recovery is much faster. By covering up I'm able to enjoy some outside time. I'm really grateful to you 💖💐
I was born with broken Capilleries on my face and basically everywhere.. been under several hospitals through out life.. now 58, married and use camouflage make up..
Really needed this, I have these around my nose because when I was young suffering with acne I had bad advice from reps in department stores and got a Clarisonic, they told me to spend one full minute on JUST my nose when I had breakouts (it's meant to be for the full face). Awful awful awful....
Been there, Best way> V Beam or Cutera Excel V for facial telangiectasia treatment by an MD. IPL is for rosacea redness usually done by a nurse or esthetician at a spa.> Risky...

Thank you for the indepth information. I ended up getting 3 V-BEAM sessions for broken capillaries on both cheeks, the results once healed only lasted for about 2 weeks, they are now ALL back PLUS some. I'm very discouraged and don't leave my house without foundation. Do you think that maybe a different type of laser or therapy would be beneficial? Or if anyone else has had a similar experience have any suggestions? Thank you for taking the time to help. ❤

Both my grandmother’s and my father had fair skin. My rosacea started in my 20’s. The redness isn’t as bad but the blood vessels are still there.
Sounds just like me lol
St. Ives scrub caused mine, even tho it's not really noticeable if I don't look at my magnifying mirror. Just learned in the last year that it's so bad for your skin. I tossed all mine.
Left cheek could also be from sun damage if you drive.
You are never boring! I trust your advice because you do your research. I love the fact that you’re doing to detail!
Thanks for watching
I was just taking notice of how every night I get pretty intense facial flushing as a 20 year old and I was researching rosacea. This video came at a perfect time for me. Thank you!
Are you allergic to something? Maybe you need allery bedsheets etc
must be something you are doing at night like using a certain product
Look up Mast Cell Activation. I was treated for rosacea for years, nothing worked. Turned out it was a histamine issue and dermagraphia.
I have the same problem. Redness progresses as day goes along and worse at night. It is NOT allergy to sheets or doing anything different at night other than getting through the day
Dehydration manifests this way
I have had primary Sjogren's syndrome since my 20s (unusually young) and I tend to get telangiectasias, alas.
I’m going to look into red vine tablets. Wonder if the licorice would help? 😂 at this point I’d try anything!!
@@cookiehoarder5967 I have used a serum with liquorice. It helped the redness but not the broken veins. Sorting out my gut issues/ Candida helped the rosacea also but the veins are persistent.
Which st ives facial scrub caused it and why?
Yes, I've struggled with this disfiguring skin conditions for over 40 years! I live in southern CA., and the dermatologist I went to charges $500.00 a treatment and you need to go at least three times. At this point, I can no longer afford the treatments.
Your “details” are what is important, thank you very much
🇦🇺
Hi Dr. Dray, does tretinoin aggravate these broken blood vessels? Especially for someone with rosacea. Thank you!
🙏🌹💕🐈🐈🐈💕🌹🙏
Same!
Great advice! Unfortunately I was hoping for a home remedy! 👃
Stay safe 💜
lasers only make the capillaries smaller, they don't eliminate them
and you will have to go in for repeat treatments every 4-5 months
unfortunately its permanent, i have tried every expensive vitamin, mineral, herbal, cream, gel, etc
@@TL....Have you ever tried anthogenol. I've read good reviews on this product. I know it's costly.
I've had the sides of my nose lasered twice and they are still there
I have telangiectasias due to rosacea.
Hello, would these be the same as the ipl devices you can use at home for hair reduction? I am wondering as I have a bit of rosacea on my cheeks. 🙂
I very much appreciate all the detail that you go into. I learned so much. I had telengiectasia on the side of my nose, and it took to laser treatments to completely eradicate it. That was 15 years ago. Now I know what probably caused it!! Thank you for thorough education.
Super helpful, thank you. Do you think it's safe to use a retinol or tretinoin if you have this?
As much as I enjoy doctor Drayss advice. She is someone I’d enjoy spending time with as a friend. I love her intelligence and sense of humour.
Dray!
How was there no lawsuit regarding this
I just listened to a podcast discussing that lawsuit last week. I'd never heard about it before but I was never a fan of Mario Bedescu products already. When I worked at sephora I'd always roll my eyes at girls buying those face sprays by him lol.
@@melodyblackhall6702 what’s the update on it…
Wow, I didn't know about this!
@@christinagarrett7760 sure. I use Coréana Ampule:N Ceramide Serum Shot, and since this comment I also began using their Peptide serum as well.
I have this condition and have undergone several laser treatments. It's uncomfortable, but works.
Yes, I struggle with T on my cheeks. Thanks for mentioning Calcium channel blockers as I have been taking one. I have always had sensitive skin. Thanks for honestly sharing.
Needed this information, good video. Also, the pink lipstick is so cute on her!
God doesn't mind if your not perfect...Allah akbar
I use sunscreen everyday since 10 years. Since I'm pregnant, actually 40 weeks now, those vessels appeared around the 6th month. I've never flushed before, I was very surprised to wake up with those rosy cheeks. I don't use scrubs nor chemical peels. Actually my skin changed from mixed to dry.. so yes.. hormonal cause 😊
I had a mini facelift which I now have a few surface blood vessels. Your post has given me ideas. Thanks 🎉
Thank you for addressing this. I really feel I can make better decisions on the products I purchase since watching your videos. I certainly appreciate it. I don't spend money on useless skin care. 😄
Thanks for watching
I have a small one of these on my cheek from one of those scrub gizmos. Also probably alcohol use as well (which I just stopped. Yay!). Didn’t realize it was bad for me till I discovered you Dr Dray. My derm recommended her use of Cutera laser. Haven’t done it yet as I’m also going to see about maylar bag treatment first. Man, getting old really isn’t for sissy’s. But so greatful for this channel. Wish I’d known all this years ago. Especially sunscreen.
No Dr Dray never bored here!!!
thank you for talking about this. I had these around my nose and a little on my cheeks I started wearing sunscreen and using tretinoin but I also found products that finally don't irritate my skin and I don't notice the blood vessels anymore because it looked so bad and made me self conscious a bit. thanks again for talking about this.
Great to hear it cleared up for you :) do you mind sharing the products u used
@@christinagarrett7760 sunscreen and tretinoin plus using the cetaphil gentle clear salicylic acid cleanser has helped with the redness plus the cetaphil redness relieving night moisturizer and I also use the 5% urea cream by zeroid.

Hi Dr. Dray🌻happy thursday and thanks so much for all the detailed information
How did they wean you off ?
I have had severe sinus issues/allergies all of my life. The years of nose blowing and two sinus surgeries have definitely caused capillary breakage.

Thanks for this video. But may I ask one more question? Does using tretinoin cause telangiectasia too?
Thank you for making such comprehensive videos. I think having more information is better!

They come back with vbeam. Its a waste of money
How timely. I’m get laser to remove mine in a few weeks ! 🎉🎉

Hi dr dray! Thank you for the new video! We’ll be learning from this today.

Me too
Same here
Thankyou Dr Dray 🙏
I always learn something new from every video.
My lupus that caused those horrid veins!💡
Ever since I started watching your videos I threw away harsh scrubs and stripping clay masks and anything perfumed.
I'm really grateful to you 💖💐
I had a photo facial many years ago. I was so happy to see that my broken capillary between my eye and nose has disappeared.
I was born with broken Capilleries on my face and basically everywhere.. been under several hospitals through out life.. now 58, married and use camouflage make up..

Thank you for the indepth information. @@katherinemariotti244 thank you for your reply dear, i was Wondering if the home ipl is effective for the small blood vessels🥰
Some people have all the luck. Ipl was useless for me only for redness not broken capillaries
I’m so glad you are talking about this, I have one on on my cheek that popped up when I used NewA RF on my face, and it’s there now permanently. So I’m hoping there is something I can do to get rid of it.
That happened to me too! Mine went away, but I googled to see if this happened to anyone else and found nothing.
I think anything causing heat is the reason, exactly what happened with my home devices, dont know if microcurrent is doing it also.
