Great video.
Just a question ? Should we train legs with weights or should we avoid weight lifting all together ? Do weight lifting make things worse ? ? Should i stop working out my legs in short ? Also i like walk barefoot at home, should i stop that ? I like hiking also as a way of training .... should i stop going hard with hiking ? Will make things worse ?
Very good questions!
Thanks for the video!
The video is informative, helpful, and appreciated. I would like to know if you know or believe that the damaged valves in the veins can regenerate and heal over time with a generally rejuvenating noninflammatory diet, and appropriate exercises ( stretching and straightening of lower legs, etc.) I may also try horse chestnut or oak bark compresses.
I’ve never been overweight. I’m an exercise physiologist and yoga teacher, I used to teach aerobics and indoor cycle classes. I’m fit and active person who eats a healthy diet.
My weight, at age 59 and a half, is the same as it was at 19.
I don’t sit all day.
My brother had his varicose veins stripped out in his 20’s. My Mother developed veinous ulcers, and I feel lucky that mine didn’t show up until now.
Just wanted to say that it’s not always an unhealthy lifestyle that’s causing issues.
Absolutely great point! We are definitely not trying to suggest that is the only cause, but there is definitely a correlation.
@@DrTomBiernacki
I appreciate your videos.
The weird thing is, every doctor says that the best way to prevent varicose veins is to stop being sedentary and overweight - but when I ask am I overweight - well, they know I’m not. So they are just repeating something from the textbook instead of looking at the patient.
One of the veins around my ankle has gotten really uncomfortable- it’s the place that was damaged after a skydiving accident. So I’m going to have sclerotherapy on that one and a few others.
Can be hereditary
@@ginomartini4708
Yes, that’s my point. But every information pamphlet and every video talking about it says to lose weight, get more active, etc.
Same here varicose vein doesn’t have anything to do with bad life style. I am in my sixties, very active and healthy, same weight as in my twenties but I have spider veins and I hate them going to remove them very soon…
Great!! Never had this kind of care and concern from podiatrist before. Thankyou for getting to the " Bottom of things" !

This video is INCREDIBLE. Packed full of extremely valuable information for an issue that I have had for most of my adult life but continues to get worse. However, I have been an avid exerciser all of my life so that may be what has prevented it from getting worse than it is. I am now in my 60s and the discoloration (minor) on my shins has started which is not something I have had before. Just such valuable advice and reinforcement for me to go see our vein doctor!
Since you asked, I wish you'd spent more time specifically addressing spider veins or done a completely separate video about it. At 50 I haven't got varicose veins but I have several unslightly spider veins. The first 45 years of my life I was within normal weight range, except with each of my 3 pregnancies during my 20`s when I gained 45-50 lbs each time. With the added weight and a desk job, it was then that I got my first spider veins, but I easily got back down to normal weight after each pregnancy. The last 5 years or so, with perimenopause and Hashimoto's I have put on an extra 20 lbs that I'm having hard time taking off, however I haven't got any new spider veins in many years, just the ones from my 20`s and pregnancies. Anyway, it was hard to distinguish whether what you were talking about was with regard to varicose or spider veins and if the solutions you talked about would actually make them disappear, which is what I desperately want because they're hideous. It is my understanding that varicose veins and spider veins are 2 different things, so I'd appreciate a thorough discussion about treatments to remedy specifically spider veins separate from varicose. Thanks!
Which you may not get since they lump them together
I was wondering if they were the same as well. My mom had HUGE green bean pod veins which she had removed in 1977. The spider ones were still there but the intense pain from all the years of walking thousands of miles in the Amazon and before that across Europe were minimized. I still remember her praising Dr. Yamaguchi. I inherited he left leg. 😥
You didn't have any symptoms with the spider veins..?I have spider veins but ony left feet down are varicose veins.I feel heavy my legs, especially going up the stairs..For me also is not clear this video, doesn't specifically explain when a treatment is necessary before any ulcers or phlebitis.Venus insufficiency does not require any treatment for varicose or spider veins?
I've struggled with unsightly spider veins, but Venorid Vein Serum has been a lifesaver. It's reduced the appearance of my spider veins and improved the overall tone of my skin.
Thanks. Very helpful!

Thank you. In just this one video you have given me more integrated overview of what causes varicose veins and methods for alleviating the problem than everything else I’ve found. I’d never made the connection between walking around my house barefoot during the Covid years and venous insufficiency in my calves and feet. Never been overweight (too thin actually) but I’ve had varicose veins on my outer thighs since I was a child.
Could use HSA, health spending account for compression socks. Just realized my socks that I have been wearing for a couple of decades due to varicose veins stopped in my 40's

Great informative video! My doctor sent me to a dermatologist for a bruise that did not go away. She suggested supportive socks. She said t hat she wears them all of the time. But for me, they are too hot during the summer. As an alternative, I like wearing my leggings which are still supportive but are only one layer and some have mesh panels that make them cooler. But she did not tell me everything that you have. The bruise was from repeated injury to the same area that did not go away. Also, my lower leg is sensitive. However, walking and exercise does help! I like the message and stretches are a good idea! I will try that too! I will look at your walking shoes and slipers for summer.
Thank you for the advice!

Hey this was good! As a former daily runner for 20 years, I knew most of these tricks. Unfortunately I have genetic varicose veins and flat feet. Now that I am older my veins have become painful. Thanks sooo much..for this..it is alot of hoopla I can tell you..
For sure, usually foot, ankle and leg pain comes down to repeated stress over and over ans over. I have seen 1000s of people with their varicose veins removed, but pain not necessarily any better due to the underlying causes still being there
My various veins disappeared 3 weeks after taking 30,000 IUs of Vitamin D3, now I am on 20,000 IUs as my kidney began to ache which means reduce the dose till it stops aching. But the veins are disappearing, muscles are feeling stronger (heart), white dots on my arms are fading and my skin is regenerating.
So this treatment helps with spiderviens

Thank you. I have been dealing with varicose veins this for 3 years only on my right leg below the knee and last 1-1/2 years has been hell. Trying the leg pump but not working. Currently using compression socks. Will consider the ablation before the year is up. I’m 55 210-215lbs 5’8 unfortunately I’m an outside salesman and traveling around Texas and Oklahoma
Let me tell you it sucks! I’m hoping that takes care of my issue.
Thanks for the video

I was hoping you would have given more advice regarding how to treat spider veins . I have lost weight and I do walk regularly however this has not changed my spider veins, I do have high BP that is controlled by medication , I also have suffered with a disease called Endometriosis for many years and I recently read that suffering from inflammation in your pelvic area can cause spider veins too, I wonder if you can advice if this is correct ? Also can you advice anything else that I can try as I really don’t want to have surgery however I really want to get. Rid of these as it has such an affect on my confidence. Thank you for your help.
Try yoga, get in the sun or take vitamin d, vitamin d is important for blood flow, get a good massage, make hot and cold showers, drink green tea with lemon, stay alive 😂
Canada Merci Québec
I went to shop your links (BTW Thank you SO much for the recommendations!) and I noticed a few running shoes from Brooks in the recommended list for men but none in the recommended running shoe list for women. Get them for women as well, they are amazing! This is just a list of 5 really good ones.

Some people have ‘hidden varicose veins’ and yes it is well worth getting the treatment as long as it is the appropriate professional treating them with the correct procedures. I know because I have been through the lot and some doctors have little idea what they are talking about.

Question... I got my varicose veins after losing weight. I know doctors say you just don't see them until you lose weight, but I didn't lose that much! Like 20 lbs and my legs didnt lose that much fat. Very odd. All sorts of veins started popping out all over my legs. Within a few month period.
Mine too!
What about laser treatments on varicose veins? Is it effective? Does it render results for venous insufficiency? Or is it solely a cosmetic removal of the unsightly veins? Any consequence? Please explain what exact laser treatments are available and what they result. Thank you for all your information.
Lol.. I didn’t find the first joke funny. I see a vein in my inner right calf. My main issue is that I run three to miles per day for six days and I can feel a pain in that area. I can’t stop working out though.
I took natto a few months and the spider veins completely disappeared!
Hi Doc @Michigan Foot Doctors .
I didn't know that blood clots were also an issue associated with this.
It has got me immensely worried.
Is it fairly probable outcome of varicose veins or a scarce one ?

I will do more stretching and massaging I've had trouble wearing the compression socks because it goes all the way up my leg to the groin and the socks just seem to cut off the flow and very uncomfortable. One question I have is I have read that vitamin D in large quantities is very good for the veins and can actually diminish or completely get rid of some varicose veins can you clear this up for me? I'll check back
My mother had problem with her fot she goes upp and down she fell pein she cant go well, help me
Yoga is great or legs up the wall with supported back for 15-20 minutes a day and it will do you wonder … not just the veins, but your digestive system and lymphatic system
I wish you had addressed pregnancy more. Also, varicose veins seem to run families. I’ve had mine since I was 30 and I’ve always been healthy and never overweight. It seems like my pregnancies have aggravated my veins worse each time.
Friendly feedback- didn’t need the images of making healthy food choices especially taking pizza away from the kid. It was a little fat shaming.
I'm only 41 an i have numb in my feet but they are so much painful
I have had varicose veins since I was in my early 20's. Had 3 x surgery, last one about 12 years ago. I was always fit and active and a good weight till about 10 years ago. In my late 40s now and the varicose veins have started to appear on my thigh. They are ugly and I can't remember the last time I went bare legged. I have worn compression stockings, exercised, nothing seems to have worked. I have been left with thick scarring where they made the incisions on the back of my knee during the 3 surgeries. It's funny because it's only in one leg too, like you said.
Everyone is different, but I almost always see varicose veins in the tighter, stiffer, or previously injured leg. This is usually the leg that has to work harder (as a result of surgery, rehab, or prior injury). The more weight, age, stiffness, poor shoe support, and lack of exercise are added, the more likely it is to have swelling and varicose veins. But again, this is not 100% for everyone.
Thanks for sharing your story!
@@DrTomBiernacki I also have joint hypermobility and suffer a lot with joint pain, repetitive strain injuries, bursitis and now arthritis. Doctor told me early onset varicose veins are more common in those with joint hypermobility, especialky those with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Though I haven't been tested fir Ehlers, I do have a lot of the problems associated with it like varicose veins, hernias, recurrent sprains, strains and dislocations. Anyway, I enjoy your videos, thanks for uploading.
What if you are born with it?
