Games like Star Wars Outlaws seemingly sell significantly better on console than Steam at launch. I looked up some data, the percentage of PC sales are rising for Ubisoft titles, but is hovering around 35%. I suspect some of this is Ubisoft Connect, not Steam. Let's be generous and guess that Steam is 22% of the 35% of PC sales. Do we think that 22% more sales would put the game into performing as expected? I would image not.
Ubisoft games haven't launched day 1 on Steam in years. That's a huge missed opportunity. Late ports = Wishlist and maybe a purchase down the line on a steep sale barring certain games that I know I'll love like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, Returnal, etc. I played Hitman 1 and 2 on Steam but they went to Epic for H3 for a year exclusivity. Hitman 3 is still on my wishlist and I'll probably pass on it.
For as long as the PS5 exists in the current generation I'll never forget that scalpers after a global fucking pandemic that we were still going through later that year were going 'But we got lives and families too!' as they parttake in making the conditions for getting PS5's for normal people far worse than ever need to be.
But i feel ironically that may bite them in the ass since it cost 700 bucks anyways One i saw on fb marketplace was set way too damn high 4,500 bucks like you got to be most stupidest scalper to set that price way too high then retail
Tbh the cancelation of the Titain MMORPG really pissed me off after their reasoning. The quote stuck with me, "Do we really want to be the MMORPG company"? Yes. You do. Because you're the only company good at it. Then Overwatch came out and things felt even worse because I loved Overwatch's initial release. I saw OW as a small fraction of what Titan could've been. Now finding out it costs 80 million just to scrap it because they didn't feel like making it, come on man.
As per usual, Valve does nothing and everyone comes crawling back. This is why they can charge 30%. Don't like it? Leave. You'll be back. They always come back.
Valve as a company is very consumer and developer friendly. Whereas every streaming service is turning off password sharing for extra profit, Steam literally made it easier for family sharing games and stuff. Additionally, the 30% is only for the games that are sold on their platform. If someone sells the steam key on some other marketplace or even sell through your own means, they can keep 100% of the revenue that you get from the sale.
@@mezkoo4259 Yeah, but like it or not, a majority of console gamers are on Playstation. That's a huge chunk of people who are going to have almost zero interest in AC when Ghost of Yotei is an option.

A stakeholder is simply someone who has an interest tied to the company. So the town the factory is in, the customers who purchase the product, distributors, suppliers, etc. So when they mentioned stakeholders, they are including gamers. But let's be honest, the "stakeholder" part of that quote is total BS.
A "reveiw" aka, executive teams, not at all aware of their actions on the company and the real situation decides to put blame on everyone else but them and go, "We never knew!" Executives doing what they do best, shift around and blame others
But in this case they are losing so much money that they have to actually do it in order to save themselves if they pretend they would continue to lose money
Was it a surprise? I was thinking that ubisoft was weirdly quiet not pushing an assassin's creed game coming out soon then a week later the delay was announced.
Console exclusive and PS5 exclusive. The biggest game market right now is PC. Whole lot of people on Steam and PC in general who are passing on consoles this gen because who wants to pay $500 to 800 and have to pay to play online just for handful of exclusives? Lol at even bringing up GTA VI as if that's relevant. That game isn't coming until 7 or 8 months later and I wouldn't even be surprised if they delay it further.
@mandu6665 so you agree with me then. I don't see where the lie was, lolol. Do other countries have a different month where they celebrate black people?
It didn't help. Skipping a platform with 132 million users total and 69 million daily users is a good idea. It probably wouldn't have sold 2 or 3 million more but skipping Steam in this day and age is just shooting yourself in the foot if you're not Nintendo, Sony or Epic Games. Why do you think every other publisher besides Epic came crawling back to Steam? Bethesda lasted like less than a year.
To defend morhaim- the utopia studio you described is literally valve. They don't care about cancelling games after 5 years or working on them slowly for a decade in the background. They also have an infinite money machine and it's better than blizzard's And they proved with Deadlock that by preserving their 'magic' and allure, Valve can have a hit with zero marketing.
I think the real problem with Blizzard is that they don't think a game is worth shipping unless it has some deeply involved stat system or an extensive strategy and counter-strategy relationship. They don't just make games to be games, they make them to be chores. Much like Ubisoft does, but from a different angle.
100% agree with Bruce on SP becoming a favorite studio of mine. I just replayed infamous 1&2 and just started the first Ghost of Tsushima and it's amazing to see how much they've grown as a developer. Super excited for the sequel.
6:05 I've made it this far and I'm 98% certain you guys don't even acknowledge the real problems gamers collectively are having, but that's your guys' call. 🤷♂️
I know, they are talking about releasing on steam as if it was the deciding factor between good sales or bad sales. Like WTF. So I guess all the PS exclusives have had bad sales, because they are only on playstation at launch. The game was shit, period, that's why it didn't sell.
Been a predominantly PC only gamer for like a decade now (have a Switch though cuz Nintendo doesn't do PC releases) and I don't think a game could possibly exist that would make me want to spend $500 on a PS5. Could be the next coming of peak WoW and I would still rather just stay on PC.
As a consumer I love Steam, it's SO easy to locate all my games in the same spot and having that extensive library of literally any game I could dream of purchasing is a huge draw. If I'm watching the market though, Steam's ubiquity is stifling competition. It's not a problem right now, and depending on how Valve handles it we may not see it escalate this far, but there's a reason companies were broken up to de-monopolize the US economy. If we're taking an objective view of the state of the gaming market, Valve has all of the control and this has been proven true time and again as these big companies try to launch their own game hosting services that eventually flop, just to have sales jump when the game is released on Steam.
I think it's just such a slap in the face for long time AC fans to FINALLY be getting a Feudal Japan AC and we're forced to play as an African... At least we can play as a native Japanese person through the female character. Yasuke could've been a cool side quest character but forcing you to play as him is unforgivable. I won't be buying it that's for sure. Ubisoft needs to stop doing this, they even had black people in Valhalla if you can believe that. Absolutely insane and extremely disrespectful to the native Japanese people.
There’s no way I’m paying for Ubisoft plus just to play a that game for 20$ a month is huge. And because I made that choice I’ll never even looked to buy it.
I don't think "ehmehgerd the protagonist a female" is the issue at all, at least for the vast majority of players. I reckon there are two factors that make people cautious these days whenever a game makes you play as a woman: 1) there's the same tendency as with movies these days to put a woman lead into everything, which makes people cautious. And 2), this is more of an issue with Ghost Of Yōtei - the voice actress they hired for the lead role is a proven activist. I really have no problem playing as a woman in games when the option is available, the issue is when a game has an agenda, like lots of games these days, and you can just tell the choice was not organic, but driven by corporate agendas and stuff like that. And that's the stuff that makes people tense whenever a studio chooses to make the protagonist a woman. In the past nobody cared, because it was pretty much a given that the choice was made purely based on the plot and the devs just organically came to a decision that making the protagonist a woman was the best choice regards to gameplay, the story etc. But these days it tends to be a political message thing. Gamers are not stupid, they can tell and I think they're just tired of it. Of course there are and there will be games where a female protagonist just fits in better, and gamers are smart enough to tell whether it's a political choice or a choice based on what's best for the story. And I hope Ghost of Yōtei is the latter case 🙂
$70 price tags and owning a steam deck have really changed my buying habits. Something being on steam and being steam deck compatible are huge selling points. Also I can't imagine being about games being "woke" or whatever, it sounds like an exhausting way to live
Regarding Outlaws, Ubisoft has a habit of releasing unpolished games and Star Wars is an overmilked franchise at this point. For me, the game looks like it is fun, but I am definitely in the camp that is going to wait for the game to be on sale.
Steam wont help Outlaws, it's Massive, you need to give them at least a year or two to get their shit together. After thousands of hours in Division and Division 2 believe me, they will need that time, their ability to consistently drop patches that break as much as they fix is impressive.
The game underperformed because the game is bare minimum effort. I'm sure there were passionate people working on the game but the whole package barely passes the bar by design. Not just because it didn't launch on steam.
One silver lining, though most game dev companies will never admit what the real problem is, they'll most likely blame exclusive sales and stop with those moving forward accross the board more than like.
I’m seeing comments try to justify the complaints against a female protagonist and at least some of them are 100% just someone trying to come up with something that they think sounds more reasonable than “I don’t want to play as a woman in a fighting game.”
Everyone: "Ubisoft games always launch with bugs and poor performance." Also everyone: "Launch Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring 10/10 best games evah. Launch Jedi Survivor 9/10!!!!!!" Gamer and critical hypocrisy has never been higher. Now, before the superfans come screaming in, I'm not saying an Assassin's Creed games is just as good as those because that all comes down to personal taste. Elden Ring and JS sure did lift a lot of things from Ubisoft's open world styles though lol.
5:55 it's weird because steam is doing very little besides being an easy to use game shop and library, and other launchers somehow completely fall short. So everyone relies on steam as the stable library where they keep their games.
That and the whole, launch the second launcher trend I think anoys people needlessly. Imagine if on console you had to launch the launcher then login again, makes zero sense.
Doing very little? My dude you have not been paying attention. Go take a look at the Steam Workshop of any game with a healthy modding scene. Valve has constantly innovated with their storefront in multiple ways. That's why they're so successful and why people are "No Steam, no buy." Other launchers and stores can't even compete in any metric because Steam has them beat on all features. One of the reasons games piracy has gone way down in many countries around the world is because Valve offered them a better service with Steam.
AC is not outlaws. i didn't have issues with mirage, valhalla, odyssey, etc. i think ac shadows would have done fine even if outlaws tanked. i didn't care about the woman protagonist, but i just didn't get super hyped about outlaws. i may play it if it goes on sale, or comes to game pass ultimate.
It would be nice if ubisoft would go back to the good old days where they focused on making good games that pushed industry standards and actually appealed to the broadest audience possible. They also need to get rid of their dreams of competing with Steam, it's not going to happen. Ubisoft has to be the slowest burning dumpster fire of a company I've seen since EA's golden poo award days.
You'd have to be really dumb to buy Ubisoft games at launch for full price. Just wait 6-10 months and they'll be on sale for 1/3 of the price AND they'll be more polished and have more content, you'll get a much better experience for a fraction of the price, meanwhile day 1 buyers overpay for a buggy and unpolished product. Their model is not sustainable. People give Nintendo crap for never lowering the price of their games but it works, if you put out a polished product day 1 and you don't discount it then you create an expectation of both quality and long-term value. I know that if I spend $70 on a Zelda game, it won't show up for $20 with more content and polish a few months later, so I just get Nintendo games on day 1, but these Ubisoft/EA games I don't touch until they're priced at what they are actually worth.
The only dumb people are the ones who like to act all superior and tell people how they should spend their own fucking money. I had a MUCH less buggy experience with Star Wars Outlaws on PC than I did with Baldur's Gate 3 at launch. But why did Larian get a free pass? Hell, they just added new cinematics or whatever to their unfinished game recently. It's cool they supported the game for so long but if you're going to whine about one studio you better hold EVERYONE ELSE to the same standard.
I tried to just get one of the anniversary controllers and got all the way through checkout, but never received a confirmation email and the charge didn’t process. Lame.
Remember female protagonists aren't the problem, bad writing is the problem. Stop crying woke and start crying improve the writing. And pay the writers and animators what they deserve when they actually do a good job.
I'm sure there are people mad about female protagonist. But the majority of them are mad because the voice actress is an LGBTQ activist. Now personally, I don't care. I've actually seen some of her work and I think it's decent. I've seen some of her tweets and I don't agree. That's the extent I cared and it doesn't bother me. Than we have ultra right wing media and "based" story tellers saying she hates cops and hates white people, and in the tweet they used as evidence nothing of what they are saying is even close to what she has said or stands for. People just hating to hate.
Finally someone with basic critical thinking and common decency. Dogshit writing will be dogshit writing if none of your employees have good enough experience in the market.
Lol as if games with bad writing haven't sold gangbusters. The Jedi games have awful writing but they sold tens of millions of copies. The only people crying woke are the goblins like Asmongold and other turds who constantly whine about games. Go check the UA-cam comments for the Ghost of Yotei trailer.
It's honestly simple. Blizzard North was genius. Blizzard sucks and has been burning good will and riding Blizzard North's legacy ever since Blizzard North shut down. Blizzard slowly revealing that it's incompetent is just a long ongoing process.
in those 10 years blizzard prolly shipped 3 to 4 wow expansions, the last starcraft 2 expansion, overwatch 1 and 2 and raked in that subscription and loot box money
So people are wrong for not wanting to buy Yotei just to avoid supporting the weird VA/Actress? Also most people are saying that they wanted Jin's story to continue not necessarily "why there is a woman protagonist" and even if the did say that, isn't that a valid question too? Like is the female protagonist a product of creative choice or source of ESG score? Anyone trying to deny that question is either not paying attention to the industry or lying through their teeth.
We are also not allowed to ask why an African male is the lead MC instead of an East Asian male which comprised 99.9% of available male fighters in Japan at that time.
Because y'all are always so fucking weird about it and your "just askin' questions bro" is always so fake. For one, Jin's story is done! Sucker Punch said his story is done. That's it, there's nothing more to it and there aren't any "questions" to ask about it. Besides, what's he gonna do? Go to the mainland, take on the Shogunate and start slaughtering the people he gave up everything to protect? It doesn't make sense and would so forced. A time jump gives them more gameplay options to boot and lets them explore another area of the country.
Staw Wars Outlaws was very dispointing. I was hoping the enemy NPC's would be as dynamic as in Division 2. Different classes and different factions have different tactics (obviously not as intense). They are so dumb. They are standing around, begging to be shot in the face. They speed up to you in a speeder and stop to slowly get off right in front of you so you can take them out of their misery.
Well, enemy incompetence is kind of characteristic of Star Wars. Fallen Order had plenty of that too. I don't feel that excuses the state of the AI, but I suspect mirroring the Division's AI would feel tonally strange for Star Wars.
@@orijimieh, the fallen order/survivor games did have competent enemies in the Purge Troopers and commando droids/special bandit dudes. Granted, given the combat system all enemies are bumbling fools when you can parry and dodge everything.
@@TheMasterblah Yeah, that's why I said plenty of that. Despite being a souls clone, they didn't make even standard stormtroopers and whatnot menacing in the same way those games treat their grunt enemies.

I'm legit having a blast with Outlaws. I hope they continue to work on it. I wont complain about more polish, but mostly I'd like more to give it a shot.

And they are doing it again for the special edition ps5 pro
But i feel ironically that may bite them in the ass since it cost 700 bucks anyways
One i saw on fb marketplace was set way too damn high 4,500 bucks like you got to be most stupidest scalper to set that price way too high then retail
More BG Voices please! I was literally taken there by that subtle lilt to his accent....
Releasing AC:Shadows in the same year as Ghost of Yotei isn't going to help their situation...😅
dont tell them, lets enjoy the fire from a faraway safe distance.
Check the games coming in February... They keep hitting themselves.
To be fair people who don't have or want a playstation don't care.
@@mezkoo4259 Yeah, but like it or not, a majority of console gamers are on Playstation. That's a huge chunk of people who are going to have almost zero interest in AC when Ghost of Yotei is an option.
@@mezkoo4259 That's not really true especially when you take into account GOT on PC. There were plenty of people not on Playstation who were glad that the game was good or wanted to play it at some point.
So they delayed it into the year GTA and Ghost of Yotei comes out? Oh yeah they’re boned.
They also made it so that it comes out in black history month which to me is funny in a cosmic sort of way, lolol
@@FactoryDan Black History month in AMERICA ya gonk.
@@mandu6665 exactly. Why the insulting word if I'm right?
Steam is not the reason star wars outlaws did badly, pull your heads out of the sand.
@mandu6665 concord was on steam...
I love Star Wars but not that much
I didn't even know Ubisoft plus was a thing.
The main reason I haven't bought Star Wars Outlaws yet, is because it forces me into unforgiving stealth.
Yeah and who wants to play an open world game where you are forced into stealth? Not me, lol. I know Ubisoft stock has dropped quite a lot too....
Thanks Brian, I somehow missed they were porting Dragon Quest Monsters. I need to get right on that.
After all these years it is such a privilege to still get to watch you guys talk about video game news
To defend morhaim- the utopia studio you described is literally valve. They don't care about cancelling games after 5 years or working on them slowly for a decade in the background. They also have an infinite money machine and it's better than blizzard's
And they proved with Deadlock that by preserving their 'magic' and allure, Valve can have a hit with zero marketing.
I think the real problem with Blizzard is that they don't think a game is worth shipping unless it has some deeply involved stat system or an extensive strategy and counter-strategy relationship. They don't just make games to be games, they make them to be chores. Much like Ubisoft does, but from a different angle.
Steam being the UA-cam of video games is cringe, regardless of whether the game is good or not
Star Wars Outlaws is for that $30 game. That kind of game that you don't mind waiting for, be it one or two years, you can wait! One day it is $20!
100% agree with Bruce on SP becoming a favorite studio of mine. I just replayed infamous 1&2 and just started the first Ghost of Tsushima and it's amazing to see how much they've grown as a developer. Super excited for the sequel.
If Blizzard hated working for Bobby Kotick, they’re going to *really* hate working for the peanut gallery that runs Xbox.

Ubisoft was at one point my favorite game company in the far cry 3 and black flag era.... It's heartbreaking to see how far they fell

I miss their Abstergo Entertainment splash logo's from the AC 4 / Rogue days. It really set the tonal lore for their company lol.
Thank you for altering Brian’s video frame rate. It doesn’t go unnoticed!
$70 price tags and owning a steam deck have really changed my buying habits. Something being on steam and being steam deck compatible are huge selling points.
Also I can't imagine being about games being "woke" or whatever, it sounds like an exhausting way to live
Them scalpers bouta ticked off in a year when they havent sold a single console
Regarding Outlaws, Ubisoft has a habit of releasing unpolished games and Star Wars is an overmilked franchise at this point. For me, the game looks like it is fun, but I am definitely in the camp that is going to wait for the game to be on sale.
Brian's microphone sounds like it's in the next room over
Steam wont help Outlaws, it's Massive, you need to give them at least a year or two to get their shit together.
Not just because it didn't launch on steam.
brian impression was the funiest thing I saw this week
One silver lining, though most game dev companies will never admit what the real problem is, they'll most likely blame exclusive sales and stop with those moving forward accross the board more than like.
I’m seeing comments try to justify the complaints against a female protagonist and at least some of them are 100% just someone trying to come up with something that they think sounds more reasonable than “I don’t want to play as a woman in a fighting game.”
Everyone: "Ubisoft games always launch with bugs and poor performance."
Also everyone: "Launch Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring 10/10 best games evah. Launch Jedi Survivor 9/10!!!!!!"
Gamer and critical hypocrisy has never been higher. Now, before the superfans come screaming in, I'm not saying an Assassin's Creed games is just as good as those because that all comes down to personal taste. Elden Ring and JS sure did lift a lot of things from Ubisoft's open world styles though lol.
I would love it if The Initiative revived Starcraft Ghost
Brian sold me on a copy of Dragon Quest Monsters. Have never played the series in my life.
Splinter cell, not open world.
Brian's accent work is immaculate.
i would have bought outlaws if it were on steam
Why?
2:57 He started french but turned russian at the end there. 🤣
13:20 Wait... He's right.
A perfect read by Brian of not being woke by saying it in a stereotypical French/Marlon Brando accent. 😂
"Best creative talent" and they came out with Diablo 3 ahahaha
Titan's 80m vs Concord's 200m-400m lmao
So excited for both Ghost of Yohei, and man it looks soooo good. Ghost series chalking up to be such a damn good series.
I tried to just get one of the anniversary controllers and got all the way through checkout, but never received a confirmation email and the charge didn’t process. Lame.
I’ve had so much fun playing outlaws. Sabacc has been the best part for me. I’m excited that the first dlc is basically Star Wars Casino Royale.
The 2nd DLC needs to let you knock Markin's toilet over.
The second DLC needs to grant you the chance to knock over Markin's toilet.

Remember female protagonists aren't the problem, bad writing is the problem. Stop crying woke and start crying improve the writing. And pay the writers and animators what they deserve when they actually do a good job.
Incorrect
It's all connected. You can't separate the bad writing from the activists doing the bad writing.
Ubisoft can remaster Black Flag and get some $$$ back?
in those 10 years blizzard prolly shipped 3 to 4 wow expansions, the last starcraft 2 expansion, overwatch 1 and 2 and raked in that subscription and loot box money

Can we all chip in 5 bucks to get Brain a better microphone? Or is this just a meme after all these years?
So people are wrong for not wanting to buy Yotei just to avoid supporting the weird VA/Actress? Also most people are saying that they wanted Jin's story to continue not necessarily "why there is a woman protagonist" and even if the did say that, isn't that a valid question too? Like is the female protagonist a product of creative choice or source of ESG score? Anyone trying to deny that question is either not paying attention to the industry or lying through their teeth.

I like steam so I dont have 5 different stores to buy games on my pc, its irritating buying games from more than one storefront.
@orijimi I would disagree, the starwars fallen order and jedi survivor has variety and complexity in combat. Still kept the charm of those enemies.
@@orijimieh, the fallen order/survivor games did have competent enemies in the Purge Troopers and commando droids/special bandit dudes. Granted, given the combat system all enemies are bumbling fools when you can parry and dodge everything.
