Brilliant advice. I avoided double knee replacement. I went low carb and IF, reversed T2Diabetics, lost weight, lowered my BP and went off all meds with 6 months. I go to my physio and do some knee exercises now, could barely walk six years ago. This is a lifestyle for me now, has been for 6 years and I'm 72 years old.

Strawberries are good for keto and blueberries... some nuts, such as pecans and almonds. I completely reversed my Type2 Diabetes by eating lots of meat, salads here and there, dairy, eggs, LOTS of bacon... just educate yourself on what foods have carbs. My surgeon asked me to lose 20 pounds before my LTKR surgery. I lost 29 pounds (in 3 months) using low carb, IF & exercise. My knees felt so good I was considering NOT doing surgery.
Today is 5 weeks after my total knee. First, I had an excellent surgeon and I have followed his Pre-op and post-op instructions to a T. Started PT the next day after my overnight in the hospital. I have a wonderful Physiotherapist who is helping me get ready for my next surgery in 3 months. I have been following your videos on UA-cam and think you are one amazing PT!! Thank you for sharing information with others about IF and Keto. Cutting out sugar & processed food is a real game changer! I use (the free version) the ZERO app fasting clock. It too was a game changer for fasting. I choose how many hours I want to fast and it does the rest. Even tells me when I'm burning fat for fuel or in ketosis. I can't thank my orthopedic surgeon enough for asking me to lose weight before my first TKR.

For knee osteoarthritis it is important to strengthen all your leg muscles to support your knees. I began exercises in 2006 and incorporated all the exercises that I was taught by my physiotherapists. Now I have my own routine. Despite my fat free vegetarian diet, I began bloating and gaining weight. By 2017 I was my heaviest ever. That is when I discovered the Keto diet. I am still vegetarian; lost 10 kg; and lowered my blood pressure too. I am now 76. I began trekking at 70 and continue to do so. So All this is possible if you are disciplined. I have my wonderful doctor to thank for his advice on how to keep knee pain at bay.

Dr, the last 4 years have been amazing. I eat 90% Keto and IF around 18-20 hrs daily. I also do OMAD 1-2 days a week. I lift wts and exercise daily. I've gone from 18/20 XL to 8/10 M, going recently to S. Btw, I'm almost 71.
I never snack or feel hungry, do not think of food after my "main meal" which is normally around 2. I do go out to eat at least twice a week and make good choices.
For Keto, I eat mostly 1 ingredient food, no processed foods. We can do this! Don't believe that as we age we cannot be healthier and/or lose weight. Keto is not a diet but a lifelong way of eating for me now. 🙏 💪 ♥
I started this because 4 years ago my knees were in very bad shape.

Things are getting much better after some consistent intermittent fasting, cutting out sugar, cutting out seed oils and having less than 20g total carbs each day. Years ago I had general arthritis problems in my knees and what not and just for fitness sake started doing intermittent and prolonged fasting. Over a period of time I lost over 50 lbs of fat doing fasting and eating mostly beef and butter and eggs. After doing that and losing weight I was feeling fantastic. Hi Dr. David! I wanted to make sure none of your people had the wrong ideas about "keto flu". When you eat carbs those carbs hold fluid in your body and in those fluids are your electrolytes (sodium, potassium and magnesium) Once you are in ketosis, your body doesn't have the carbs so will lose the fluid. It is one of the reason people lose weight so quickly in the beginning. If you replace those electrolytes daily you will NOT suffer from keto flu and will do quite well! The lousy feeling are not toxins you must sweat out but your electrolytes you need to replace so your brain, muscles and nerves work well again. So great to see someone recommending keto to heal.

The reason why it's important to leave a sizable time gap from your last eating to bedtime is because when you sleep your body goes into fat-burning mode. If you do this consistently you can lose significant weight over time. You can enhance this effect by selecting a time "window" during each day when you eat, and not eating anything, or just very small amounts of food, outside of this window. My window typically is 6-8 hours, from about 11 am to noon and spanning until 6-8 pm. Top this off by restricting carbs, and everyone who wants to lose weight WILL, and quite easily. I am 70 years old, and i will tell you that it's a fallacy that the older you are, the harder it is to lose weight. After a bad two years starting in 2020, through the gyms closing due to COVID, coupled with accidents and a very bad injury, i had grown despondent and put on significant weight. However, from around April to now, i have lost over 40 lbs. by severely restricting carbs and intermittent fasting. It is NOT hard .... just takes a basic desire to get back into shape and LEARNING the facts about dieting, fasting, moderate exercise, and avoiding evening / nighttime eating. The nighttime eating thing is REALLY important. GLTO.

Everything you've said about diet is so true as I've fully experienced it for myself. I've suffered with acute osteoarthritis for very many years. If only doctors would educate us about this. I was having continuous flare-ups with terrible inflammation so bad that I had the fluid in my knee removed twice in one year with a stabilising steroid injection because it was so incredibly painful. I could barely move much less walk for months on end. At one time spent practically all day in a hot bath to try to get relief from the stiffness in my knee joints. So I took my stationary time to use Google to find out what's going on in my body. This research took a good few months but by the end of it I was far more well informed as to how to help myself with diet rather than relying on medication which made me so terribly nauseous. I was under the hospital consultant who arranged for me to have knee replacement surgery. The appointment date came but I couldn't go through with it. I continued on this new diet programme I started keeping a diary of what I ate and when I had a bad flare-up tracked back to find the culprit. I cleared out all the potentially bad foods and started afresh. Within 4 months I started to feel a definite change in the continuous pain and rigid stiffness. Slowly but surely I was able to walk again pain-free. It took roughly a year to get to this level of non medication and free of any pain and stiffness in my knee joints. I thank the Lord that I was able to find this information 15 years ago. I've kept to a healthy diet lost a lot of weight and am very active going on regular hikes the gym and anything and everything outdoor life entails. I know I have arthritis but I no longer suffer from it ... and I'm always shouting out to everyone to please research and check their diets for a healthier pain-free arthritic life and with YOUR help out there with the combination of the right exercises there should be far less replacement surgeries needed.

Right knee was scheduled for replacement in December and I heard a vice telling me not to do it. I called the surgeon and told them cancel it. I’m in my 40s and thank God I did it.
I still go on walks and hikes. Swim 5 days a week. Use steam room and sauna.
We can definitely cope without surgery and medication

Just ran across this video, although I subscribed a while back. 60, overweight. But 4 1/2 months ago, I began intermintent fasting. (12/12 and 16/8) 6 days a w week. I also cut out the breads, pastas etc.. increased fresh fruits/veggies. Haven't weighed, but have lost 6" or more in the waist.
I was already doing many of your exercises and seeing some results. Since the weight loss and daily exercise, my knee pain has almost gone, and the right knee is bone on bone.
I had to cut back on the fasting due to time conflicts with work, beginning in September. Still doing an 11 hour fast overnight, wake up at 4am, doing light cardio by 4:30 while still fasting. Then doing 20-40 minutes of exercise in the evening, totaling about 5 hours per week. I don't work my quads or hams, but do my glutes and calves. I use the heavy bag daily, and am getting my kicks back (former Black Belt competitor).
I was probably going into keto in the first couple of months due to diet and fasting. In the past few months my diet has been poorer than before. This video has convinced me to not cheat as much ! lol Thanks !

Wow! 100% agree. Low carbs high fat medium protein was and is my medicine. Using ketones for energy is absolutely the best. I eliminated 95% of my knee pain with going carnivore. For 2 years and a half. This is true. I can walk again. Thank you for going this way. IF and keto/carnivore! 👍

I don’t think you need to eat meat eg be carnivorous to succeed. Lowering unhealthy processed foods in general is the key imo. Starches such as rice and potatoes are much healthier and are not inflammatory. No one eating enough calories has to worry about protein regardless if they are starch or meat etc.

I am beginning to think that not one size fits all.
I find rice extremely inflammatory. Potatoes mildly inflammatory. Also a grain free diet had me 100% pain free in 8 days. High fat works for me. Rice makes my joints hurt. My MD suggested no legumes as well. It was working well. Then the joint pain returned. I found I was eating too many omega six fatty acids. (Too many nuts).🌄

    • @andreafong9952
      @andreafong9952 Рік тому

I think you have to do a real elimination diet before you attribute symptoms to very benign foods like rice and potatoes and use a drastic diet like carnivore to heal your symptoms. As you said too many nuts may have been part of the problem. Even they are probably not the real problem which is why a proper elimination diet is important. Dr. John McDougall has one for free on his website.

Hi not sure if this is helpful but my orthopaedic Consultant advises definitely no breast stroke leg action for my knee arthritis and to stick to straight legs when swimming or water walking resistance up and down the pool is good too. Good advice for me as I was often very uncomfortable after my swimming sessions I only did the breast stroke, then changed and experienced much less discomfort. Good luck to you, maybe I should consider a move from my wee cold Scotland to somewhere warm! That might help my OA too but think I’d miss it 🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

I love intermittent fasting. It worked for me (I only had 15 lbs to lose) after years of trying to diet. It's been 4 years and it feels like it has reset my "normal" slim weight that I had been my whole life until my 60's. Admittedly, I'm not hungry for breakfast but waiting until 1pm was a bit hard. Drink water or tea or coffee and get busy and the hunger goes away in a bit, it doesn't build up as people think. Your body is smarter than that. It worked for my husband until he didn't have the will power not to snack. It worked for my sister too and she had 35 -40 lbs to lose. 3 years later she is still slim. Btw: I'm now 70 and my sister is 73. We both exercise and eat healthy.

I eat once A-day anywhere between 11 and 2 PM and then in the evenings just a piece of Fruit and I've eaten that way for many years. It just feels normal to me. But incidentally since I began eating this way I have slowly shed 100 pounds. Can't imagine how bad my knees would be if I still had that 100 pounds to carry around.

I’ve been doing the keto diet for several years and am more recently keto/carnivore often called ketovore. I’m in that menopause range, have had gut issues, and diagnosed with Macular degeneration at the young age of 50(there’s a carnivore eye doc I’ve listened to who believes this way of eating can halt the progression

Been using Keto & IF to control & maintain my health stats & weight for 4 years with wonderful results. But last year I broke my femur pretty badly & drifted away from full Keto eating & IF. The leg healed fine but now I'm dealing with knee osteoarthritis - twinges, clicks, pops & some mild crunching. Luckily I recently began to feel driven to go back to Keto, IF & exercising - & fast feeling good again, knee included. Quickly dropping sedentary weight gain too, which really helps stop lower body joint paint.
Your body is created to move & burn energy to do it. When it can't (or you don't let it), it's the most miserable unhappy feeling, physically & mentally. Keto & IF are the only habit changes that ever worked for me long-term & changed my negative health habits & stats; energy levels to positive ones very easily, quickly & significantly.
(Lowered blood sugar range to 80-90; dropped 50 Lbs & no longer in pre-diabetes danger - all issues gone within 1 year. There were also nice changes in my vision abilities; hair & skin appearance.)

I have lost 110 LBs living on Keto. It has taken me about 2 1/2 years, but the thing is, it is so doable. Easy to stay on. When you talk to your doctor, I would not say a Keto Diet. I would tell them, I have cut out sugar and wheat and I am eating low carb. Many doctors don't know much about Keto. Just ask the many doctors who do know about Keto. They said in their years of medical training, they probably only had a few hours of actual nutritional training. I have heard of people who started Keto because they had cancer. Eating Keto turned their cancer numbers around and saved their lives. Another good book is Any Way You Can, by Dr. Annette Bosworth, who actually saved her mother's life by putting her on Keto and actually doing it with her. She is also on UA-cam, under Dr. Boz.

Good video. I guess I've been doing intermittent fasting and not realizing what it was. I have been not eating after 7pm every night. I have been doing this for the past 3years. I do exercise 4x out of the week. And I do have high cholesterol
. I have noticed that I do weigh less the following day. My problem is carbohydrates, and I know it. However I'm trying to eat in moderation.

Processed carbohydrates and too much meat are probably the culprits. You could easily give up meat and any processed foods for a month and see how much weight you lose. Surprisingly adding starches such as rice or potatoes cause weight loss. There is a lot of concern about gluten so I would forego bread and oatmeal etc. just to ensure optimal results.

Stopped eating after 6.30 at night years ago to stop my acid reflux. It worked like a charm. Unfortunately the keto diet is one I cannot tolerate at all. I now eat mostly fruit and veg, eggs and fish, occasionally a little meat. I believe a little of what you fancy works best. I'm not overweight, so not looking to lose weight, but do have generalized arthritis. It began in my late 40s in my spine, and now 35 years later It's pretty much everywhere. Worst places are my left ankle and foot, right knee and hip and my left arm from the shoulder down into the fingers. I don't use a cane or walker, but have to limit my walking. I swim for fun, which is pretty painless, but I do periodically need pretty heavy pain medication if the nerves leading from my spine become compressed. I'm pretty functional, but very slow. I'm always up for trying other ways of dealing with things, but I'm starting now to think I'm probably doing as well as possible for my own circumstances.
So, interesting ideas, but nothing for me.

I was a vegetarian for 10 years (totally vegan for over a year). I started to genuinely feel the need for meat protein and when I switched my diet to meats and low carb veg, I felt better right away!!. I think the body responds well to dramatic dietary change on a regular basis.

Mercola is ok but don’t take his word 100%. I would look at Peter Attia. Just my opinion… I also do keto. I think everyone agrees with no sugar, fast when possible, don’t eat late. I do measure ketones with blood tests at home and on keto all my blood results from the doctor were sooo much better…I’ll say that! Oh as someone else here said, Ken Berry m.d. also for more of the biochemistry see ben bickman. I like our mr. El Paso. Glad I found him. Oh yes. Keto flu. You can get less of these symptoms if you go off carbs a little more slowly. I’ve done it for years because I sometimes go off keto. When i go back on more slowly, no keto flu symptoms

Be careful of Keto. The IF works on its own. A high protein diet tends to lead to your body pulling calcium from your bones to buffer your acidity. It gives you a blood test that makes it look like you have high calcium but au contraire . Lowering your refined sugar as in candy bars is good of course. You can still go into ketosis after eating say a vegan diet just by fasting. I am just cautioning against increasing in any way the already too high consumption of animal foods, primarily meat, in the Standard American Diet. It may be that the benefit comes from what you aren’t eating such as a bread, cookies, beer, French fries, fried chicken, hush puppies and all the other batter fried foods one avoids when avoiding sugar.

I totally agree. I have done IF for 6 years and went plant based 13 months ago. I have gotten incredible benefits from the diet. Cleared up my sinus allergies, lost weight, decreased my hypothyroidism medication, lowered my cholesterol, my husband stopped getting kidney stones. These crazy people pushing keto are killing people. Dr Sarah Hallberg, who did a viral Ted talk on how keto is so awesome for diabetes, she herself died from cancer a few months ago at 51. Furthermore the real cause of diabetes type two is excess fat, not carbs. As long as you don’t add fat to whole grain carbs they are healthy. Keto is a dangerous diet.

B.S., the proof is in the pudding. I was diagnosed a Type2 diabetic and given a shoebox full of meds. After watching many dr.'s (Ken Berry, Fung, etc.) on UA-cam, I threw ALL of my meds in the trash and went from Keto to full Carnivore diet... NO CARBS. I completely reversed my Type2 (my A1c is 5.5 from 12) and I eat LOTS of red meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cheese and other dairy.
Vegan diets, although they make the hippies feel good about mother nature and help to impress your friends that you really care about the environment, are harmful... too many carbs!!
You wanna lose weight, reverse diabetes, feel a LOT better and eat savory delicious food? Stop eating carbs.

    • @wanda18221
      @wanda18221 2 роки тому +5

@@BarneysBullitI went plant based for my health but if it also helps the environment then even better. You are only putting a band aid on the problem. You have not cured your diabetes because as soon as you eat carbs your insulin spike will be out of control because your system is clogged up with fat. Eventually even the excess protein you eat will be converted to sugar and you will have problems. Plus all that excess protein and dairy is extremely carcinogenic. Dr Sarah Hallberg, was on keto for years, which probably led to her cancer. I am not the boss of you so you should not care about my stance if you are so confident with your choice. I will say that many diabetics, because of lack of blood flow probably, are not the sharpest at making diet choices so they fall for the baloney that these quack “doctors”put out. God bless you, I pray it works out.

@@wanda18221 again, the proof is in the pudding. how can you argue with facts?? if my "system was clogged with fat", certainly my blood pressure would indicate that. my blood pressure is perfect. and i did not say i "cured" my diabetes anymore than anyone taking pills or eating vegetables only... but i have reversed it and i'm well aware of the consequences of eating carbs... that's why I DON'T EAT CARBS.
you really should do more research into diabetes and keto/carnivore, going vegan is not the answer. i know because i've been doing it for over 10 years.

@@cathi7610 I agrée that highly processed foods need to go and many of them are starches such as a cake mix. That said there is no harm in and much benefit to increasing starches such as rice and beans. Fats are not what we had thought but bottled oils are dangerous foods for many reasons. I don’t see the point in an overweight person who has her own stored fat eating more fat. It’s a little unnatural.

Hey Reggie, protein from a carnivore diet is very important for building muscle, but carbohydrates are also really important as well because it requires energy to break down proteins into a form that helps in building muscle. Carbohydrates are the quickest and easiest forms of energy we can ingest. This may explain why you are having this issue. The knee pain can also be from muscle imbalances as well.
