  • While Saturday Night Live, 48 Hrs and Trading Places made Eddie Murphy a star, it was 1984's Beverly Hills Cop that made him a household name. Street-wise Detroit cop Axel Foley is still considered by many to be his greatest role, and with a fourth film in the franchise, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley due out this summer, we're revisiting all three of his classic (and not so classic) Beverly Hills Cop films right here. So strap in because The Heat Is On!

This is such a fantastic movie that holds its own against any movie of the era. Murphy's comical talent was clear but the dramatic moments that needed him to feel real came naturally to him. Even with the great names mentioned, I can't see anyone else as Foley. I've said this a few times recently with creators covering older movies. When I was younger, actiom movies were often on TV during the evening when I could watch them anyway. But darker or sci-fi movies were often relegated to late nights, I have my older brother to thank for recording movies like Dune, Psycho and The Alien movies. I watched this so often on VHS.

I don't know if I'll say this is Eddie Murphy's greatest franchise. I think The Nutty Professor earns that, but Beverly hills cop is an essential '80s movie. You can't mention that era without mentioning that movie. I liked it because for the time it was completely different. A completely different take on the action cop genre and help put the action comedy/ buddy comedy genre on the map

Trading Places is arguably a _superfluous_ film, for Eddie had already had his break with both SNL and 48 Hrs. The retelling of The Prince and The Pauper did result in Dan Aykroyd finally leaving the shadow of John Belushi.

Sometimes you should just make one good movie and let it be. People can look back on it fondly, buy a dvd or watch it on streaming every so often and it'll bring back good memories. Of course most of the time Hollywood wants to cash in on a popular movies and just milk it to death till it ruins the whole franchise.

Bruv there are no goodbyes. Hollywood has given up on originals. the movie going public simply will not show up for them. i don't care how much they claim to hate reboots, remakes and sequels. they piss all over originals even if they are based on established works. Every movie that made more then $5 in profit over the last 30 years is going to be remade, rebooted or get a sequel in the next few years. i will keep saying it until somebody listens, the girl in the spiders web was one of the best movies of the last 15 years period! if you disagree then watch it 30 times like i have and come back. As far as BHC 1-3? one was 4 out of 5 stars. two was 3 out of 5 stars. three was 0 out of 5 stars. Part three was soulless and lifeless and thankfully even eddie murphy was ashamed of himself for making that movie.

The original had a gritty, real-world feel to it, as if you were watching much of Axl's world through binoculars. The sequels would have benefited from directors from a documentary background, like Friedkin or Mann, as the sequels looked too polished, over-lit, and over-planned compared to the original. The sequels lacked the spontaneous aspect. Far less love and care went into the sequels, and the objective of the second film seemed more of a cash grab rather than a labor of love. The third film as made to solely keep the franchise and flagging career of Eddie Murphy alive. The headspace of Murphy during the third installment wasn't in a good place, which was clearly reflected in the finished film.
