@@mouseshadow5828 in the interview with Rick Beato he says he rarely plays fills exactly like on the album. He likes to change it live and also often these takes in the studio are "in that moment" and hard to exactly replicate. @@jrgdrumsandwatches Yep, the fills in this performance are different from the studio recording. I actually like the fills here a lot better, to the point where I consider this to be the definitive version and the album version to be, I dunno, a practice session?

Live version in this video is not *precisely* like the studio recording, but the differences are tiny -- when the composition is this complex, he's not going to go completely off the rails. Two examples: the small staccato hits on the tiny cymbals in the middle of the guitar solo are not on the record; during most of the instrumental interlude in this live version he's keeping time with the high hat, but on the studio recording it's the kick drum doing the quarter notes (after a few bars of matching the bass pattern). I'm sure there are others.

@@yarpyarp85 I believe Danny tries to "master" a song so that it sounds as close to perfectly the same each time, although sure there's always going to be some minor variances, but with Danny it's more than likely that playing the same song/s all the time he has made "slight improvements" to each song so that while they "sound the same" to fans but to him they probably "sound better" than ever.

@@yarpyarp85the solo is slightly different from the album but he plays it exactly, like this video, during the live shows, no improvisation during that middle section. The only thing he improvises is the order of the fills in the “instrumental chorus section” the 4/4 section.

Sorry bro, you are downplaying how good this is. That middle section is straight swiss triplets, and fast ones, across different pads, while playing alternating ostenatos with his feet. @@yarpyarp85 Now that you've seen Vlad Ulasevich (Jinjer) I'll throw Alex Bent into the recommendation pool. He taught himself to play drums by largely watching UA-cam videos around age 11. By age 18 he was a hired gun including for bands like Battlecross and Testament. About 7 years ago - at the ripe old age of 24 - he became the permanent drummer of Trivium. I think his drum playthrough for 'Betrayer' is a good place to start.

What an outstanding drummer! His body language , His gestures, his touch and his mastery of his instrument are simply incredible.
I'm pretty sure that one of his great influences is Christian Vander, drummer for Magma, the French cult band from the '70s that blends classical music, jazz, contemporary music and progressive rock.
If you don't know Christian Vander, you'll have to fix that mistake, Matt. This man isn't human, he's a genius possessed by his music, an extraterrestrial haunted by the spirit of John Coltrane. I suggest you listen to one of their live tracks called Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh or the version of Hhaï / Zombies Live Triton 2005.
Finally, I wish you every happiness with your wonderful wife. May your love last forever!

    @mushroomcloud222 2 дні тому +1

Chairman Matt, here's a few things:
    1. Don't know how it is with drums, but with some things there's an interesting curve, like, if 1.5 hours was a bit of a torture for you, there's always a chance that 3 hours will end up feeling entirely different, like as if you opened a different chakra. No guarantees, but happened to me with hiking, once I went a trail and was completely done at the end, next time full of anxiety, I went on a harder trail almost twice as long as the first one, and I felt some pains, but at some point it started to feel different. I have a sort of theory of an "another you" that shows up with something valuable only when you don't expect it. Not like I can guarantee it shows up when you want it.
Either way, just... keep doing like and subscribe challenges, but simply - strategize and choose something that will really force you to push yourself and get rewarding.
    2. There's this thing called video ad blocker, you can do as simple as only turn it on when you're recording. UA-cam has declared a war on it, but then seems to have backed down. For now, but pretty sure "The Internet" of "the many" is more likely to figure something out sooner than a limited number of IT professionals, even if corporations like YT are possibly on the look for the best of the best to hire (no bad word intended at them, just consider that it took Tomas Haake to nail down Bleed like 6 months, then he challenged drummers to learn it and a few came up with solid imitations pretty fast - not saying they are better drummers, but that there are occasionally ways to speed up the learning curve by throwing the right milestones at yourself. That said, it feels to me that in metal or similar genres, it's sometimes a better game to distribute your skills between a sort of hunch or intuition, where you just take the pattern like trr-trr-ttrrrrr-trrr-tr-tr-trrr-trrr in through repetition and start replicating it intuitively without counting, until you get it into some sort of semi-conscious muscle memory, and pull out the counting only when you need it. )
    3. Get ready to eventually react to the Drumeo video of Mike Portnoy trying to learn this as soon as possible. A treat and of course, even if he's a super-class, still different drummers would have different ways to approach this or just different things to notice if they were to learn it as quickly as possible, ideally knowing their own strengths and weaknesses, not to mention the vocab blocks to use, so it's bound to be exciting.
    4. While everyone can keep discussing whether Tool is metal or not, I'd say that onwards from the first two albums, it's only a matter of where exactly they are going to land in not just metal or rock, but simply music history. Don't want to insult anyone, only my feelings are that Fear Inoculum (their last album and where this song is from) wasn't really as innovative as I expected, more like perfecting the craft, and while that's OK, I just felt a bit let down with regards to how innovative Tool could get at moments when least expected.
And I'm not even of the Tool army, just felt a few more paragraphs than usual could make this place more interesting.

Danny has a strong Indian influence. One of his main instructors and inspirations is Aloke Dutta, Indian tabla master. If I remember correctly he guests on the live version of Pushit they released on Salival. Anyway, that's one of his 'secret' weapons you might say because many people are not familiar with Indian rythyms which can be quite advanced and interesting. Familiarize yourself with more Indian music and I'm sure your sense of timing will advance as well.

yeah, quite unpopular. Danny alone is a spectacle to behold. i get it though, a lot of people don't enjoy long technical, intricate, mind blowing, instrumentation. but for musicians, TOOL are expert level entertainment. not for everyone.

Pretendginger! Thank u so much, I truly appreciate it! And I get what you’re saying, to each her own. I have an unpopular opinion of my own (if we’re sharing) haha I’m not a big fan of breaking bad hahah. Every time I tell people they chew me out😭😭 thanks for watching though!

@@corrob Actually I think your description is right on because I also feel the same about Animals As Leaders and Opeth. If a song or two are integrated into a recommended playlist or played, say, on SiriusXM Liquid Metal I mostly don't mind. But seeing an entire live set is a struggle for me.

@@yarpyarp85 When I first saw your reply I read it as Breaking Benjamin (the band) and thought "Well...🤷". LOL. But then I reread it and realized you had said Breaking BAD - as in the show. Yeah I could see that one causing more than a few jaw drops in disbelief. Lucky for us all there is plenty of media content to choose from - unlike the 80s when most of us had about four channels on a TV that only had dials and no internet/satellite radio.

The "instrumental section" where Matt was saying how Danny's hands are playing different beats, I recall another drum expert who said all 4 of his limbs were playing different time signatures during this song, but that for much of that section his right leg and his left arm were playing the same time signature which is pretty amazing since those limbs are controlled by the opposite sides of the brain. Danny truly is an Octopus in human form.

I don't think Danny "gets loose with it" everything he does is about precision, that's why he has no trouble with the odd time signatures and poly-signatures, if he wasn't precise he would struggle. Just my opinion though, great reaction video.

"This is the type of music, this type of artistry that makes me emotional when I watch it. It's TOO good." Is close to what every TOOL fan thought the first time they heard a TOOL song. I remember exactly where I was when I heard my first TOOL. INSTANTLY hooked! BTW, 46&2. I was DJ-ing at a rock radio station on a Sunday morning in '98. Before computers,I had to know when it ended to push the button to start the next tune. I missed the cue because I was in a TOOL trance. I never looked back. 🤘

Danny studied classical percussion at Kansas University for a few years before heading out to Los Angeles to try and make a living out of music; he played in several bands at the same time (putting more irons in the fire), including Green Jello and Carole King. After Tool had difficulty finding a permanent drummer Danny joined and things took off fairly quickly (much to their surprise) after playing Lolapalooza in '93 which helped boost sales of "Undertow" (their first LP) & the "Opiate" EP is legendary. I like Vinnie Colaiuta, Gavin Harrison and Matt Cameron for groovin' odd-time drummers, all these guys make a simple 4/4 groove sound awesome too.

I didn't even try to count this out, and for that matter follow the guitar grove. What I did was isolate the guitar and vocals, then just vocals. A very cool vocal syncopation you don't see very often (if at all). It did take me several hours to dial it in. Most of use drummers don't think this way. But then again, most of us drummers don't get fed music scores like this to deal with either. Very nice and off the chart's grove and over-all song that a lot of fun to play!
