I used to agree. Lateralus with the Fibonacci sequence just proved how astounding they were. I can not recall any other bands that have done that. Gave me a whole new respect for them
Danny studied classical percussion at Kansas University for a few years before heading out to Los Angeles to try and make a living out of music; he played in several bands at the same time (putting more irons in the fire), including Green Jello and Carole King. After Tool had difficulty finding a permanent drummer Danny joined and things took off fairly quickly (much to their surprise) after playing Lolapalooza in '93 which helped boost sales of "Undertow" (their first LP) & the "Opiate" EP is legendary. I like Vinnie Colaiuta, Gavin Harrison and Matt Cameron for groovin' odd-time drummers, all these guys make a simple 4/4 groove sound awesome too.
"danny carey hits hard" i had the pleasure to sit within arms reach of hiim and his set during a show and you he hits the cymbals so hard i felt the air come off them like a fan.
The "instrumental section" where Matt was saying how Danny's hands are playing different beats, I recall another drum expert who said all 4 of his limbs were playing different time signatures during this song, but that for much of that section his right leg and his left arm were playing the same time signature which is pretty amazing since those limbs are controlled by the opposite sides of the brain. Danny truly is an Octopus in human form.
Dude, hope you have a great time in China! I love this album, one of my favourites, and this song is incredible! Watching your video reminded me of sitting in your living room in our teens watching different live band performances after jamming together!
The composition of their music has grown in complexity but they’ve maintained that unity sonically that makes them more than the sum of their parts. Heaviest band ever, by sheer mass. Even when they aren’t heavy, their weight is undeniable. They move you because their mass displaces you like the hull of a ship.
Man, I don't really think about just how big a dude Danny is, until I realize I have some o.g. signature sticks of his...and I use them for warm up sticks before a gig. They're not small sticks by any means, but they look like extended 5A's in his hands. LOL Great video and commentary, I never get tired of seeing that footage of Danny and this track.

Live version in this video is not *precisely* like the studio recording, but the differences are tiny -- when the composition is this complex, he's not going to go completely off the rails. Two examples: the small staccato hits on the tiny cymbals in the middle of the guitar solo are not on the record; during most of the instrumental interlude in this live version he's keeping time with the high hat, but on the studio recording it's the kick drum doing the quarter notes (after a few bars of matching the bass pattern). I'm sure there are others.
@@yarpyarp85 I believe Danny tries to "master" a song so that it sounds as close to perfectly the same each time, although sure there's always going to be some minor variances, but with Danny it's more than likely that playing the same song/s all the time he has made "slight improvements" to each song so that while they "sound the same" to fans but to him they probably "sound better" than ever.
@@yarpyarp85the solo is slightly different from the album but he plays it exactly, like this video, during the live shows, no improvisation during that middle section. The only thing he improvises is the order of the fills in the “instrumental chorus section” the 4/4 section.
My approach to appreciating drumming is like the old adage about art, I may not know drumming but I know what I like. You don't have to be drum expert to know Danny Carey is one of the best. Also my guy, GET UA-cam Premium!!!
Am I wrong to think k the reason odd time signatures are so difficult for some people to grasp is because what is being played is so much more personal choices being made by the drummer and not something that’s mathematically easy to emulate?
What an outstanding drummer! His body language , His gestures, his touch and his mastery of his instrument are simply incredible. I'm pretty sure that one of his great influences is Christian Vander, drummer for Magma, the French cult band from the '70s that blends classical music, jazz, contemporary music and progressive rock. If you don't know Christian Vander, you'll have to fix that mistake, Matt. This man isn't human, he's a genius possessed by his music, an extraterrestrial haunted by the spirit of John Coltrane. I suggest you listen to one of their live tracks called Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh or the version of Hhaï / Zombies Live Triton 2005. Finally, I wish you every happiness with your wonderful wife. May your love last forever!
Sorry bro, you are downplaying how good this is. That middle section is straight swiss triplets, and fast ones, across different pads, while playing alternating ostenatos with his feet. Jeff Porcaro wouldnt know what to do with this. Playing it is one thing, writing it...DC is on another level.

My approach to appreciating drumming is like the old adage about art, I may not know drumming but I know what I like. You don't have to be drum expert to know Danny Carey is one of the best.
Also my guy, GET UA-cam Premium!!!
Hahaha sooooo sorry! I’m gonna!
Am I wrong to think k the reason odd time signatures are so difficult for some people to grasp is because what is being played is so much more personal choices being made by the drummer and not something that’s mathematically easy to emulate?
Ya dude totally, the worst kind of odd time signature playing is the stuff that is worked out ahead of time. No soul no feeling. ✊✊
Carey says this song isn't even the most difficult song in the Tool songbook to play..
Did he say what the hardest is??
I love Magma so so much. Did not expect to see Magma/Vander mentioned in this comment section!
@@wordswordseverywhere9113 I'd never have imagined I'd be talking about Magma on youtube myself, except on the band's videos!! ahah
Go to Drumeo and watch the mighty Mike Portnoy try to learn this song. It’s brilliant.
My guy, he said that this was #1 and literally perfect, I don’t know what more praise you could ask for from him
Dude you r right I wish I caught that! I think im gonna do a lesson video on this eventually and rectify my mistake. Thanks for the input! ✊✊🤘🤘🤘
I concur with that call I reckon he's number 1 to me then Eloy
You know Danny has a jazz band named Volto?
@@GranTurismoJunkyi think he explained that pretty well. He had an expectation of something very specific being mentioned, and got indignant that exactly what he wanted to hear wasn’t said. Basic internet childishness and lack of manners.
And as amazing as he is, it's an interesting watch to see he step into a tribute performance of YYZ with Rush after Neil's passing.
Oh shoot I gotta check that out for sure. Thanks! 👍🤘
Pay for UA-cam premium man. 15 bucks a month and commercials will never ruin your vibe again.
Yup I got it now💪💪☺️
ublock origin is way cheaper.
aka free.
Congrats on your marriage! That's awesome! Enjoy. my dad and little bro went to China with my older bro and his wife to meet her family, and they frequently talk about what a great time they had. Any plans to check out the Chinese jazz and/or metal scene while you're there??
Dark Satellites!! Thanks so much! I wish, apparently all were gonna have time for is the wedding stuff and my mom really wants to check out a botanical garden 🫠🫠🫠🫠 still really excited. Just touched down in Korea for a lay over. Gonna crash hard now after the 14h flight 💀. Have a great week eh!
There Will Be Blood is amazing. Great comparison.
One of my absolute favourite movies. 💪💪☺️☺️
Great reaction! Have you checked out the drummer El Estepario Siberiano? He does a lot of covers (including Carey); extremely impressive
100% I almost feel like he’s too big and to obvious to do a reaction but I should right. Literally like the best drummer around right now.
@@yarpyarp85 I WILL NOT HAVE THIS BLASPHEMY IN A THREAD ON A DANNY CAREY VIDEO!!🤣
At 11:00 he's playing swiss triplets. How can I get mine that fast? lol
Congrats btw!
And thanks for this too mang!!
the thing that makes this video is that its like a ride-along, do a le-mans lap with a pro driver, fly a sortie with a f16 pilot, play a song with tool
Spiral out, keep going....🌀🌀🌀
🤘🤘🤘💪
❤❤❤so coollll video
There’s my baby I missed this comment!!
GL with ur chinese speech! I would love to see you react to some Leprous; Baard Kolstad is next level
So many recommendation for him, gotta do it! Thanks eh!☺️🤘
Try to play that on your next tour lol
Hahaha no chance
Danny Carey is actually 8'4.5". And scientists studied his composition and found out he's made out of 63% Hickory.
Lololol 💀
I think Danny is the closest drummer to John Bonham and his greatness 😅😊
U might be right dude. 😉😉
first time hearing this song, but then you already know all the things that are going to happen? :D

I have premium now 😍😍
14:35 _"Danny Carey hits hard too, bro!"_ Danny beats those drums like they owe him money. (But somehow manages to do it with finesse and precision)
You should check out Braan Dailor (Mastodon) on Drumeo. He does a full hour long session, but there are some single songs. His breakdown of Blood And Thunder is quite nice.
Check out Baard Kolstad from Leprous. The Sky is red or Rewind - drum playthroughs
Dude yes I e had so many people mention him and say that I would love him. I gotta finally check him out. Thanks!
I would really like you to do a double reaction of the drummer David Diepold. Just any of his extreme metal play through's followed by his cover of Dave Weckl's Tiempo de Festival.
Dude!! Hey again! Sorry just seeing this now! That sounds o sick and I had no clue he’s done a cover of a weckl track. That must be sick! I’ll put it on the list. 💪🤘💪
"ToolArmy Reporting to duty -Sir"
Hahah Jesus this fan base is crazy, can’t believe it. Thanks for watching my friend!
One way to make sure a commercial doesn't interrupt your experience is to purchase a youtube subscription. That or use an ad blocker.
Great point, I’m on it. Gonna get a premium account.
@@yarpyarp85 I use librewolf browser with the built in ad blocker. Works just fine for me.
Come here for the tool reaction. Not much on Joey Jordanson though.
Regardless I love Tool. Lateralus with the Fibonacci sequence in the track blew my mind.
For someone who has never listened to anything really from jazz wheres a good place to start, who should one listen to???
Dude thanks for stopping by! A great place to start if you like kind of a funky vibe would be elastic by Joshua Redman with Brian blade of drums “jazz crimes” is a great and iconic tune. For more of an electric thing stadium jazz by Donny Mccaslin is amazing, mark guliana on drums. And for old school the best place to start is kind of blue by miles Davis jimmy cobb on drums. 🤘🤘🤘
Buddy Rich. Neil Peart aka ( the professor) and a Octopus walked in a bar. And said hold my beer
💀
@@yarpyarp85 Buddy Rich was one of my favorites
You need to react to Matt garstka with animals as leaders, he’s a more jazzy and faster version of Danny, I suggest brain dance, Red miso and gestalzerfall for songs, he has play throughs for the second two, live only for the first one
Oh yo I did a reaction already but u plan on doing more. The guy is one of the best around right now for sure! 💪🤘💪🤘
i hate ads so much! gave you a like just for that
You’re the man, thanks. I have UA-cam premium now so no more ads 💪💪💪 thank god

Man you are lucky. My wife is Chinese and I know how life is with Chinese woman. We are lucky.. 😁
Dude, 100%. I feel blessed to have meant her. 😊😊
He said that his jazz training helped him with his approach in a rock setting.
danny should record himself playing descending.
Oh just checked it out, ya for sure such a killer song!
Pay the monthly fee on UA-cam and there’s no commercials
Got it now, no more commercials for me 👌👌👌
New to the channel! I love me some drum content.
If you’re a jazzy boy, check out Blake Richardson’s episode on Drumeo from a couple weeks ago. He’s one of the all time great prog metal drummers IMO, and he’ll leave your brain leaking out of every hole in your head.
Dude thanks so much for stopping by! I’m gonna put him in the list and do a reaction soon!! Thank!!🤘🤘🤘
Try some Band-Maid ... Hate? live, shambles, unleash.... just about anything. I think you'll be surprised.
God on drums...
100%
Appreciate the content! One musician to another, ad free youtube is a worth while investment. Like you said, music that good causes an emotional response ...deserves to be uninterrupted. Saves on a lotta aggravation for me personally, since some videos on here are indispensable tools/info. Enjoy China, cheers!
Try some Gavin Harrison, Matt. Check out his take on Pick up the Pieces.
Thanks dude! I love his playing for sure, especially with porcupine tree. 🤘🤘
Fletcher: not my tempo!
Danny: which one?
I will recommend you take a look at Baard Kolstad from Leprous. He makes drum playthrus of several of their songs. You should check out The sky is red, fun little thing 🙂
And now it's time for the Drumeo video of Mike Portnoy having to try to learn this song.
Tool *is* groove
Tool is life ✌️✌️
Congratulations have fun in China. My wife and I also got married in China a year after our American marriage. Where is she from? My wife is from 沧源 cang yuan, Yunnan Province.
Hey dude thank u so much! My wife is from Shenyang but I can’t remember the name of the Provence 🤦♂️it’s been a totally blast ☺️☺️☺️

He is not getting loose with this and there is no improvisation. This is exactly as played on the album.
