5ge next time you hit a low clearance overpass... and you are not sure you can make it. You can let some air out of the tires and then you can go thru there. of corse this is just for emergencies , in case there is no where to turn around or get off the road. Just a FYI for ya... love your videos .. Happy Travels. TTYL

I would think that the "Terrible Boondocking Experience" gunfight in California would be #1, high wind experience in the Dakotas you had would be #2, being stuck in the sand with the tide coming in #3, and THEN this...

Yes Northern State and other parkway overpasses have a 7 foot 5" head-room, I've had many gut-wrenching low-overpass situations in New York's pot-hole state !12 foot 6" max height on my Thor Outlaw motorhome Eric !

Welcome to F'd up NY. Try taking those bridges on as a truck driver. You probably know now with your videos being on delay. The clearance signs are actually 1 foot less than the actual height. NY measures from the axle up instead of the ground clearance to make up for snow and ice accumulation during the winter. NY is also still backwards in their exits. Most states mark exits by mile markers. Ney Ney in NY. If you are on an interstate it could be 25 miles between exit 1 and exit 2 as an example. Just remember if go to NYC STAY OFF of THE PARKWAYS! Happy trails!

I used to work near a low overpass in Boston that wasn't clearly marked. Every autumn, a couple of U-Hauls would get stuck under it as the college crowd moved in for fall semester. Stay off Soldiers Field Road, Storrow Drive, and Memorial Drive. But Boston isn't all bad, as there are Dunkin Donuts on practically every street corner!

ERIC in Canada we are in the same Depression ....but....we are giving money to families to stimulate the economy.
We are also working on roads and bridges.
The US gave all the money to the Bankers in 2008 and print money while turning off food stamps.
In hard times countries should build highways ......and make jobs for people not give money to bankers for bonuses and money loans they refuse to give in hard times ??
By the way we don't do tolls in most of Canada......the US could use tolls to fix the Highway bridges and roads from hell.

I used to live in Gates - you should try cruising that road on a motorcycle! If you can, look for Nick Taho's and get a garbage plate... Used to be my favorite meal on a Friday night! I think it changed hands a few years back - to Steve T Hots and Potatoes, same Gates location though. I get back that way every few years. Also pull into a Wegmans supermarket and buy some Zweigle's white hots. They are made in the area and are great natural casing sausage dogs...Good Eats!

Good Morning, Eric; I've seen my share of AC units on the roadway at low bridges. Tunnels, too! You are very alert to your size, which is good! I wish some boaters would be just as alert when passing under a bridge. Spars get knocked off.

I'm confused why he keeps saying "11.8" or "eleven point eight." Wouldn't that imply that there are only 10 inches in a foot? There are actually 12 inches in a foot. Is that a Washington State way of saying 11 feet 8 inches? On the east coast, we would say "eleven eight."

As someone who drives over 3 hours a day on those shitty roads during rush hours, i feel you pain haha. It's not so bad during normal hours like you were driving on... but stay off of those roads during commuter hours, 5am to 10am and 3pm to 6pm the roads are still just as shit but you add a mess of drivers bumper to bumper at 80mph in a rush cutting eachother off, an accident every 10-20 miles, it only gets worse as the weather does. Seriously about to quit my job before winter so i can live long enough to see summer again. Safe travels

As a Commercial Driver I learned that you can USUALLY assume 6-8" more clearance than the sign says because of ice, snow and repaving that is often put on top of the roadway over the years. It was true every time I came to one and needed to stop and confirm.

I know the issues of using a Vehicle GPS when driving an RV. I use the Motor Carriers Road Atlas. It shows all of the safe truck routes and lists all of the low clearance and narrow bridges by state and comes in the standard atlas or laminated "Deluxe" version. You can get them online or at truck stops. This is a good to have "at hand" just in case you don't have cell reception Unless you put out the big bucks for an RV GPS or a Motor Carrier's GPS" this is a MUST have for all RVer's.

He's actually not kidding. Put a sign in your window that the AC is on, or you're guaranteed to get a broken window and a cop waiting for you. As for the bridge heights, NY's brilliant engineers decided to mark some of them lower than they actually are in an effort to prevent strikes. What they didn't account for is that the word got out, so people thought, "Oh, I've got a couple extra inches.. I'm good." and then hit the bridge. They also didn't do it for all bridges, so even more strikes happened.
If you think Lake Ontario is beautiful, you should definitely check out the Finger Lakes.

IT has our height in its memory and ir knows we are a 32 ft class A, but it has still taken us to overpasses we could not get under, down "roads" that could better be describedas "cowpaths," and tried to take us down roads that existed at all only in the programmers imagination.

No warning. Almost every state I traveled in before has state mandated warnings for anything under 13'6" no less than 1 mile prior, and with an alternate exit before the low clearance. I've never seen anything like this. Also, I'm hearing from locals that "parkways" are not for larger vehicles and I "should have known that" ..... Again, without any signs or warnings, or a hint, I'm not going to know this as a visitor.

I reckon they aren't used to having tourists up there.

The north east is full of low old bridges and old construction still in use. Just wait for a cobblestone street in Philly! Pretty scary with that bridge, I am definitely measuring and writing the height of my rig on the dash. Stay safe bud!

I had to tow a boat back from up state NY before GPS. Had a bunch of hand written directions that didn't take in the account that I was towing a boat. People get really mad being on a NY parkway with a trailer but I had no option being I had no clue where I was except for the directions I had to follow. Then the low bridges came into play. Like you I used both lanes and the other drivers got even madder. Not a great day for me either.

Hi Eric. I'm a local from the Rochester area. There been a lot of talk about closing one lane of the parkway and making the other two way traffic be use the stat and towns do not want to spend the money to fix the roads. The said part of the condition of that road is it does have so of the views of the lake. In your stay in NY and visit the finger lakes.

One would think they would adjust the length of the legs of the signs so that the top of the sign would show where the mark is, but I am preTTy sure that the height on the left and right are measured from the ground AT THE SIDE RAILS line thus it would be 10'10" on the left directly above the left rail... and same on the right except 11'8" ...and I am gauging that visually as if looking at a construction 2x4 (96") that would definitely fit amply! ...and it appears a 16 footer would fit at the center with spare room! BUT WHEN IN DOUBT DAMMIT... pull the fck over! and investigate! I have seen wrecks where a truck was VIOLENTLY SCALPED... totalled... ODed! ...and it is spectacular! ... and sad!
Also, it would seem that if the bridge was too low for the average RV, IT WOULD BE FLAGGED for 5000 ft with warnings ALL OVER THE HIGHWAY!

I am from NY and I know about the overpasses. However, I am not sure if RV's are allowed on Parkways vs. Highways and expressways. Trucks and commercial vehicles are definitely NOT allowed on Parkways because of the clearances. Yes, property taxes are outrageous! I have had friends that have paid up to $20k per year for homes that are about 1500 sqft. That is why I live in Georgia!

Eric... When I used to turn Buffalo out of Cleveland back in the70's. Those low clearance posts scared a lot of truckers as evident by the skid/brake marks at a low clearance location including my self. Those roads were old then...Being dispatched to avoid the tolls on the NY THRUWAY, many were forced to run the "low roads" thru Silver Creek etc..or pay out of their own pocket.."Confidence was restored when at a coffee break, it was mentioned that the clearances are measured from the sidewalk, not the roadbed...follow a 13'6" trucker thru those "low" sections. Never lost a unit in NY...FWIW

Boring area....Upper State NY has the famous Boldt Castle at Alexander Bay .....The 1000 islands dressing was George Boldt invention ....The bridge to Canada , in that area (is Lansdowne Bridge , it skips across a few USA and Canadian islands and in the fall with the sugar maples is absolutely amazing ...Singer castle is in the area as well. There is a cool camp grounds for RVès on Canadian side called Ivy Lea park amazing place with lots of history of the war of 1812

Did one of those bridges once. Hope never to again!! I love the back road scenery, but not those low clearances!! Some people pull over to let air out of their tires, but that means you would have to refill them once back on the other side.

Did you get your exhaust(?) fixed? I haven't seen a post on it?Woo, those are ugly roads, obviously, like many states their governments takes money that's needed to maintain roads, bridges, etc... and use it for "convention centers", " replacement stadiums", etc...

very cool watching all the areas that I am familiar with ...Hamlin Beach State Parkway (your low clearance road). This area of the country is absolutely gorgeous. Don't tell anyone. We have horrible taxes and crappy roads, and we get snow ... but, no earthquakes, no hurricanes, no tsunamis, very seldom wildfires ...
