I wish for video editing people would test timeline performance and denoising instead of export times. This to me is much more important as I don’t mind leaving a long export running overnight but I do care about how smooth the actual editing experience is
Same also with blender, renders of a little bit longer are no problem but how does it perform when adding better lighting, cycles, more models, more subsurface divisions, etc
They did that in the past and it was always very smooth (M1, M2). I think this is why they do not mention it anymore. Of course if you do multitasking and use bigger files or bigger projects you need more RAM and maybe more storage. 8GB: Great for browsing online, streaming movies, messaging with friends and family, editing photos and personal video, casual gaming, and running everyday productivity apps. 16GB: Great if you will be multitasking across a large number of memory-intensive apps, including professional video editing. 24GB or more: Best if you typically work on advanced projects that require enormous files and content libraries.

Still, I wouldn't have touched the M2 -- the M3 Max with the revised TSMC process looks like a winner. Looking forward to see what the high-end desktops look like next year.
Same here. I'll probably upgrade around the M5 or M6, the next leap. The M4 vs M3 will most likely be like the M2 vs M1. Not sure if we can get to 2 or 1nm in the next few years, so looking to Apple to make the gains in the actual chip itself (which is also good). Another good thing, the SnapDragon is starting to catch up, which is great for the M series as Apple will want to make sure they keep innovating for their sales. Also means lots more native ARM software in non Apple areas, like Windows and Linux. Also noticed chip lithography technology is improving and getting cheaper. Hope it can get to a place in 10 or so years where Apple could set up their own fab and not need to schedule with TSMC or whoever (won't hold my breath on that one though)...
I went for the 16" M3 Pro with 38GB Ram and 2TB SSD. Upgrading from a late 2016 MBP with the screen gate issue so I hope I see some performance gains. 2016 MBP took 3.5 hours to export a 27 minute 1080p iMovie project a few weeks back.
Thank you for this video. With all the doom and gloom all over media saying the M3 is just a modest gain in performance, it's great to finally see REAL WORLD tests versus the Max chips. However, what about M2 ULTRA versus the M3 Max in price/performance/etc.?
Wow. That was a thorough and comprehensive testing! Thanks for doing this. I am long overdue for an upgrade but I am still hoping for a bigger pro iMac some day.
The graph at 7:58 is ridiculous. Whoever draws your graphs either can't do basic math or is being intentionally dishonest. The M3 Max score is 328, vs. 194 for the M2 Max - that's an increase of about 70%, but the bar is 325% longer. Also, how about showing what's on these "tracks", since comparing "tracks" is meaningless without knowing what plugins they're running, or whether it's just hundreds of copies of the same audio clip with some basic effects.
This video makes me so glad that I'm waiting for the M12 extreme's arrival. Just had it confirmed that it will a 58 core CPU, 190 core GPU and WILL be able to tell you the meaning of life within an 8hr time period. So excited.
Having an M1 and M3 I can tell you the difference in everyday activity is undetectable (browsing, email, basic work activity etc...). Big difference if you are compiling or converting video.
Seeing the benchmarks I was getting pretty interested in maybe upgrading until I saw the fan speed during that Cenibench test. For me the quietness of my M1 Max has been so key to an amazingly happy experience. They never ramp up unless I am playing a game and then its really not that bad at all. However, the M3 Max, while super fast, if it starts to ramp up and eventually hits 100% fan speed when my M1 Max only ever hit around 40% when I am running harder tasks, it honestly makes me want to consider getting a M3 Max Mac Studio just for those tasks and keep the M1 Max MacBook for a much more comfortable and casual experience. This Macbook is now litterally the reason why I love and hate PC gaming laptops. Ultra gaming performace but they get SOO loud that it's just not enjoyable for me. Thankfully those gaming laptops usually have performance modes so you can lower the fan speed at the cost of some performace. I wonder if running on low power mode may do the same thing for the M3 Max... MaxTech if you read this at all. can you please do a noise comparison with the M3 Max gaming or running Cenibench to max out the CPU/GPU and then put it in Low Power mode and compare the difference?
If you normalize to performance, there will be less noise. In other words, if you were to slow down a new 3nm chip to perform the same as an older 5nm chip it would use less power and by proxy run quieter. Not that it helps you if you’re regularly maxing out your cores, but if that’s you then you’ll likely prefer saving half your life waiting for things in time than a bit more noise anyways…
@@cmoullasnet it does not that way, the heat is propotional about frequency^2, and you cannot manually reduce the freq of any apple chip (please do the calculation yourself)
@@broccoloodle The die shrink has reduced power at the same performance level. Yes, to some extent power will increase with frequency, but the effect is minimal and more than offset by the die shrink. Otherwise, power is also highly dependent on the input voltages which need to be ramped to reach higher frequencies typically… but this topic can get VERY long. Just know that the die shrink increased performance per watt by a significant margin…
Please perform exactly the same, once the M4 Pro/Max is out. I think many M1 owners do slowly start to consider doing their next upgrade soon. And since not everybody wants OLED (burn-in and PWM issues) this will be the last MiniLED Macbook Pro, I guess.
Great news for 3D rendering. Only issue remaining now is the lack of a Numpad. Blender can simulate the numpad keys but I would prefer to have one. Perhaps in future versions they could offer a full size keyboard option. The problem I see with that though is the speaker might get in the way. Hopefully they find a way to do this in the future. Great vid guys as always.
Nice if you need all that power of the M3 Max. But I only need a mid range M3 so got an M3 Pro. It’s great you really need all that power but I wonder on lower everyday tasks would the M3 pro last longer?
I plan to buy a Macbook Pro soon. If say 4000. is my limit better to go refurb M2 Max 96gb Ram/1T HD or new M3 Max 48gb Ram/1T HD? My usage is: Adobe CC + Cinema 4D. Tnx!
Thanks for this amazing review! Did you experience any kind of Throttling with the M3 Max? How does it perform having some external monitors and running the tests?
The video editing test are not enough to have a true feel of the performance, maybe you could test the timeline smoothness by looking at the fps while noise reduction apply for exemple. But thank you for all the great work you do !
Nice video. M3 Max chip is great chip indeed, but for me it's also very interesting how unbend M2 Max compares to base M3 Max (14 core CPU and 30 core GPU), as it's direct replacement for that and priced exactly the same. Haven't seen them compared yet.
As a video editor any of these m chips is a upgrade. I was using a 2018 entry level mac book with 8 gb of ram. As I started creating content more consistently and bigger projects my computer started seeing decline in year 3 for sure. I got 5 years out the computer but export times and timeline problems and the way the apps worked started taking its toll. As a video editor ram matters and hard drive space especially if you have to download plug ins stuff like that the entry level mac books are as good as toast. For me I needed more ram more hard drive space. It's crazy I did a wedding it was 3 cameras 4k took about 500 gb of memory. It's crazy how much space footage content takes. You definitely need above 16 gb of ram and at least 1tb just to be able to store certain things then delete when transfered to a hard drive. Memory matters on these devices especially if you are a professional always creating running programs rendering stuff like that. I feel the whole m family is a really good buy. If you are a animator stuff like that the m3 is for you but for video editing m family max is just a huge upgrade for the Intel users.
Would love a video comparing the base config M3 Pro 16 inch to the base config M3 Max 16 inch. Those two configurations is what I'm having a hard time deciding on.
I had the same dilemma but when considering the base Max has a higher memory bandwidth, more base memory, two video encode engines (vs 1 on the pro), and two ProRes encode engines (vs 1 on the pro), seemed like a lot more bang for the increase in cost. I will have it for years and I didn't want to have memory bandwidth envy.
Thank you for also shooting the new Machines out against the original M1 Max! I have the 16 inch M1 Max and I was considering getting another machine but I think I will wait for M4 and see how that shakes out!!
So, I think I need help. What would you say is faster? M2 Max 38 Core GPU - or M3 Max 30 Core GPU? I‘m having a hard time to decide between a refurbished M2 Max and a new M3 Max. Don’t know what’s better value for the money. 🤔
I just got a M1 Max for my general use and for music and it is outstanding, was cheaper than a M3 and the M1 came with more RAM and 4 TB of storage. Benchmarks are realistic sure it faster in the benchmark for when actually using to you even notice it. Look at the results between the M1, M2 an M3 yes higher and the percent difference sounds like a lot, but in real world your talking seconds difference or a minute on large graphics project. Music is my thing these days and you dissed the M1 118 tracks compared to the M3 328, but real world recording most songs are way less than 100 tracks more typical would be 30-50 tracks. A large project would be in the neighborhood of a 100 tracks. So benchmarks are fun, but real measurement of typical work load on typical sized projects. When I was a programmer we liked when it took awhile to build a project because it gave us time to get another cup of coffee and stretch our legs.
Well, current modern tunes/releases can have 200+ track but not all of them contain synths or heavy plugins. Many will have rendered .wav files inside. What did he put on those tracks in Logic test?
You guys really should be testing games with these MacBooks. Yes I know, “nobody games on Macs” but those are real world apps that push the GPU hard. Resident evil 8, lies of P, psychonauts 2, there are lots of graphically demanding games would highlight the differences in GPU and CPU performance
Can't wait for mine arriving tomorrow, and I will test it out by playing CS2 at full settings through crossover, thanks for your reviews as always. Best

Your new laptop will do it in 1 second
Thank you for this video. With all the doom and gloom all over media saying the M3 is just a modest gain in performance, it's great to finally see REAL WORLD tests versus the Max chips. However, what about M2 ULTRA versus the M3 Max in price/performance/etc.?
I will be doing this 👍
Please include lots of tough video tests as this is what many people use these machines for.@@MaxTechOfficial
@@MaxTechOfficial Great! Thank you!
Really wanted to see a heat test after 2 hour of solid gaming. Cooling is my problem with the M2 Max.
I just recently bought a mbp m1 max - still couldn‘t be more happy since I upraded from the 2014 intel one haha
Max can you make a video comparing the binned M3 Max against the none binned 16 inch?
MaxTech if you read this at all. can you please do a noise comparison with the M3 Max gaming or running Cenibench to max out the CPU/GPU and then put it in Low Power mode and compare the difference?
there is an app to manually ramp up the fans. spoiler: the noise is terrible 😂
@@cmoullasnet use numbers to compare not words 🤣
Love this video. Comprehensive tests!
Makes me feel good about my new M3 max :) 😅
Please perform exactly the same, once the M4 Pro/Max is out. I think many M1 owners do slowly start to consider doing their next upgrade soon. And since not everybody wants OLED (burn-in and PWM issues) this will be the last MiniLED Macbook Pro, I guess.
Very impressive! Still waiting for your WoW test. You missed it on the M2 Max and I'm hoping you can do it on the M3 Max 16/40
They unlikely to offer full size keyboard in future... But you can buy an external numpad.
@@DezzKB true but kind of makes things less portable. But not a bad option.
How abt m1 max vs m3 pro cuz the 16 inch m1 max 32gb is on sale now. What do you think?
Nice if you need all that power of the M3 Max. But I only need a mid range M3 so got an M3 Pro. It’s great you really need all that power but I wonder on lower everyday tasks would the M3 pro last longer?
Please make sure the bar charts are correct according to scale, some of them look off.
Everything else was great as usual, love these videos.
Can't wait to see the m3 Max and Ultra in the Mac Studio next year! That computer will be a beast!
I wish I could afford to upgrade... Stuck using early 2015 13 inch MacBook
Pro connected to 4K monitor and it's chugging like craaaaaazy.
Need a review of the M3 Max base binned chip!
69% more Logic Studio track playback. Nice.
Awesome comparison! new subscriber. Can't wait for the Studio M3 Max to come out!
7:48 The visual representation of 328 is WAY too long here, compared to 194. The difference is 69% but the bar is several times longer.
Thank you for amazing comparison test.
What happened to the Davinci Resolve tests? 🤔
Can you make a video comparing the intel vs m3? Would be nice since there are still lots of intel users out there.
Thank you very much. Can you recommend a protective case for the new MacBook Pro?
Nice video. M3 Max chip is great chip indeed, but for me it's also very interesting how unbend M2 Max compares to base M3 Max (14 core CPU and 30 core GPU), as it's direct replacement for that and priced exactly the same. Haven't seen them compared yet.
Can you do a similar comparison between with Pro chipsets? M1 pro 10 unbinned vs M2 pro unbinned vs M3 pro unbinned.
The video from the channel I was waiting for. Thank you guys! 🔥
I want to know if the new space black is faster than the original silver
please do one for m3 pro vs m2 pro vs m1 pro comparisons, the m3 pro base model vs m3 pro upgraded would be great as well, thank youu
@MaxTechOfficial - thanks for the Xcode benchmarks!!!!!! 🚄👏
Nice video, Now we need the same tests in 14” .What about the fan noise ?
Would love a video comparing the base config M3 Pro 16 inch to the base config M3 Max 16 inch. Those two configurations is what I'm having a hard time deciding on.
I had the same dilemma but when considering the base Max has a higher memory bandwidth, more base memory, two video encode engines (vs 1 on the pro), and two ProRes encode engines (vs 1 on the pro), seemed like a lot more bang for the increase in cost. I will have it for years and I didn't want to have memory bandwidth envy.
Thanks a lot for your efforts, one question please: How many hours did the battery last on the M3 Max?
would be great to see adobe premiere pro / da vinci / capcut in the video tests
They used to test the three most popular NLEs outside of Hollywood: Premiere Pro, Resolve, and Final Cut Pro; now it's just FCP.

Can y’all compare the base M1 Pro 16-inch to the M3 Pro version?
Looks like the maxed out Pro 16 Max M3 competes with the high-end M1 Studio. Nice review. This is amazing. (Yes, I bought one.)
m3 max is better
Im still curious whether to buy the M1 Max with 64G Ram 2T or M1 Pro 18G Ram 1T. Any idea ?
Plz try to compare the m3 max with most powerful windows laptops
Oh man, can you imagine the difference on battery power!
Thank you for also shooting the new Machines out against the original M1 Max! I have the 16 inch M1 Max and I was considering getting another machine but I think I will wait for M4 and see how that shakes out!!
I HATE how my M2 Max squeaks on the back when you put pressure. I am sure those rubber pieces are to prevent that. Maybe I can add them to mine!?
Thank you
So, I think I need help. What would you say is faster?
M2 Max 38 Core GPU - or
M3 Max 30 Core GPU?
Glad I waited!
You guys really should be testing games with these MacBooks. Yes I know, “nobody games on Macs” but those are real world apps that push the GPU hard. Resident evil 8, lies of P, psychonauts 2, there are lots of graphically demanding games would highlight the differences in GPU and CPU performance
Great video, interesting comparison.
Thanks for the great review. It will be nice if you compare base 16-inch M1/M2/M3 models.
What is the name of the tools that he is using to check the temperature and the core utilization/speed?
Can't wait for mine arriving tomorrow, and I will test it out by playing CS2 at full settings through crossover, thanks for your reviews as always. Best
Really I love your channel and I love this comparisons. I have been waiting for this comparison between M1 M2 and M3 max. Thank you so much.
To see true video Editing you need a timeline with cuts, transitions, music tracks etc. that’s what slows things down in adobe premiere. On mac if you try speeding up playback to scan footage the mac stutters often. The macbook struggles with iphone pro max footage once you start editing. Unless its a user error on my part im not impressed with video editing on mac. Its slow on 1080p editing from iphone.
