  • If you've ever wondered what's behind Apple's chip names like M3 Max or A17 Pro, you're not alone. In this video, I break down the confusion around Apple Silicon and make it easy for you to understand.
I start by exploring the two main types of chips Apple uses - A-series in iPhones and M-series in Macs. Then, I dive into the different M-series chips like M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra, making sense of their progression. I'll also cover Apples latest chips including M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max.
Learn the basics of chip generations and classes without getting overwhelmed. Discover why more cores don't always mean better performance and get practical advice on choosing the right chip for your needs.
I also touch on memory (AKA RAM) and why claims of needing less than intel might not be true. Plus, I keep it focused on the essentials - the CPU and GPU - to help you make sense of Apple's chip lineup without too much tech jargon.
If you're curious about Apple's chips and want to make an informed decision when choosing a device, this video is for you. Tune in for a straightforward guide to Apple Silicon!

I love your calm, yet inflected delivery. I hate the over-the-top, exaggerated facial expressions, rapid speech, excited gestures style of presentation that so many UA-cam tech personalities have. You look and sound very professional. You are interesting to listen to, factual, engaging and just REAL. Major kudos, man.

Fantastic video and incredible quality for a new channel, got this in my recommended, you’ve got success ahead man.
I’d also like to add that the baseline chips have gotten incredibly more capable with the introduction of M3, the baseline chip can actually handle quite a few pro level tasks with ease and the new GPU architecture enables them to compete even further with the pro and max variants, people are seriously sleeping on base M3.

    • @TechDeclassified
      @TechDeclassified  4 місяці тому +1

I fully agree - the latest M3 chip is really truly powerful and can handle some pro tasks well. It’s exciting to see where things go in the next few years! The addition of ray tracing was pretty huge. Apple still has some work to do with their GPU to be competitive with NVidia but they’ve made some big strides forward.

It is my understanding that the M1 is basically what the A13X would have been with some Mac specific sections added. When it came time for the next gen iPad Pro why produce a separate line when the M1 already exists with what they want. The simple and more affordable option is to take the chip you are already producing and use it. It adds value to the iPad Pro line and saves development costs.

Be careful moving into the M3 series of chips. Apple did a bit of futzing with the die design. Their low and medium grade chips have less memory bandwidth than their equivalent M2 chips, and they emphasized power efficiency over raw performance. You need to go all the way to the M3 Ultra to gain back much of the memory bandwidth and horsepower they took away that were part of the M2 chips. For some programs that could mean a performance hit compared to the equivalent M2 chip. Apple wants you to pay a premium for the Ultra to gain some of these gimped features back. On an M3 Macbook Pro that could mean spending A LOT more than before.

"The ultimate guide to Intel, Nvidia and Ram" Would be a title I'd click on. Especially if you manage to ram it into 20 minutes or less.
Im also looking into which laptops are great as a work station. Meaning I need to be able to take my laptop to school, and have a dual monitor setup at home, with the screens plugged into the laptop.

A way I've noticed smaller channels make money is via affiliate links. Just a thought :) I wouldn't click on them personally but I guess some people do.

Nice video, a good guide for non-techy folks who are looking to buy a new mac. One small error; it's Parallel (sorry I'm a spelling and grammar nerd!) Cheers

Thank you! I appreciate the spelling correction hah it’s frustrating that most video editing software doesn’t have spell check. My recent video I uploaded and was ready to publish before I caught a big spelling error and had to re-upload. Sometimes I work too fast and my brain goes faster than my hands.

Nicely explained. For my shopping for work, I look at current model which fits our budget and then compare cost wise with a previous generation or two with 1-2 steps up. ie, if the current model we would buy has an M3 Pro, I see if I can snag an M2 Max or M1 Ultra for a similar or better price.
I keep hoping to find a real comparison of creative cloud... intel mac vs apple silicon mac and RAM. As a legacy CC user, more RAM is always better. But now that RAM is super expensive. Most review videos of Apple Silicon assume 99% of the world is doing video editing. They act like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are dead. Would love some real test results of how the M series in its different levels coupled to the varied amounts of RAM...function.

Congratulations on your new channel. Well presented. One slight "hick" I find the repetitive music background a little irritating and distracting after a while. Your don't really need music for this type of channel which I repeat it is well presented, informative and useful. Thanks.

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. After this first video I had a few comments about music so in the second video I turned the music way down. I’m still experimenting with editing and my style so I’ll keep refining as I make more! Thanks for the comments and helpful feedback.

When the M series Apple silicon came out Apple decided to introduce a new limit the external screens your allowed to run.
This is vital to know to professional use.
Basic M series chipe M1,M2 or M3 are restricted to running only 1 external screen.
To get two you need the next level chip.... But that only lets you have 2.
To get 3 you need the highest end M series chip, the most expensive one.
You used to be able to run 2-3 screens out of Intel Mac machines and were great for projectionist and video art installations, but now one has to be very wary of what you M series chip you buy.
So if you use multi screens for advanced editing/arts work or are an artist that uses projectors to make your art then beware of Apple M series for these tasks. Unless you buy the most advanced M series chip you will have limited creative options if you expand your arts career in the future.
I have no idea why Apple choose to limit a M series machine to just 1 screen only, esp given there is more than enough power in the ship to do it. I struggle to see why they would limit the creative potential for professionals.
Most other 'Pro' creative laptops/desktops will support min 3 external screens, some that use AMD support 5 external screens and I've seen such machines used in the arts industry running 4 projector installations easily.

    Hey, great video.
I am just about to buy an M1 Max (used in good/very good condition) or an M3 Pro basic model. Both in the 14 inch version. Which one would you recommend to me in order to be covered for the next 4 to 5 years in the future?

    • @TechDeclassified
      @TechDeclassified  4 місяці тому +1

That’s a tricky one. It’s going to depend on what you’re doing. If you can get the full M1 Max for a good price I would probably go with that. For some tasks the M3 Pro may actually not be as good as the full M1 Max.
But both chips are great! The M3 Pro does come with the new GPU cores but unless you’re doing gaming that utilizes them (most don’t) they don’t have much advantage yet.
I personally own the M1 Max myself (the top end one) and it’s working great for me. I edit all these videos and graphics using that.

@@TechDeclassified Thank you for the detailed answer.
I would be able to get the M1 Max (10-core CPU, 32-core GPU 32 GB RAM and 1TB SSD) for less money than the M3 Pro basic model. I would use it, mainly for video editing, photo editing, coding, and sometimes simple 3d animations.
For gaming I have my ps5.

@@Felix-kz8wi in that case it seems the full M1 Max is likely a better deal then!
