I have been leaving this comment for years but I guess I’m never early enough to get noticed: Can we please upvote this so the guys at Max Tech see that the term “binned” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the “cut down” version of a chip? 14:19 brother, 48% vs 46% isn’t simply “2% more” when the former is a 100 Whr battery and the latter is a 72.4 Whr battery. That’s actually a substantial difference. Here’s what I mean: 46% of 72.4 Whr = 33.3 Whr but 48% of 100 Whr = 48 Whr. Thats 44% more.
But what counts on the real world is the remaining battery time and not the Whr number. If one device has 46% and the other 48% it means that they have very similar time left running on battery.

I have a video about the fan noise (with audio recording): I pushed the CPU to 100% on my 14" M4 Pro MBP and it's "as bad" as my old 2019 Intel 16" MBP. But It's completely silent (fans are off!) for UA-cam watching, screen recording or having an external monitor attached - 3 things that would spin my 2019 Intel MBP fans quite fast.

I’m curious what you guys do for backing up files in case of an internal or external drive failure. Many suggest not paying for internal storage and using external. That’s fine, but then are you backing up what’s stored on an external drive.. onto another external drive? Isn’t that super tedious? Do you plug both drives into the Mac at the same time and manually make 2 copies of everything? Or do most pay for cloud storage and use that as a backup to the external drive? Internal and external drives do fail.. so again, how are y’all backing up years worth of files?
Yeh, saw it straight away in the back left of the 14". I've had no dents in my M1 MBP but certainly got a ding in my final Intel MBP when I had to put my personal bag into the cargo compartment on a small plane. Thought the M-chip cases were a bit more resilient.
Can’t wait for a base 16 M4 max vs upgraded chip 16 M4 max video. Is the 36GB going to limit heavy multi-tasking? Would love to unheard your thoughts for “on device AI” usage in future years from extra GPU cores and RAM?
Should I buy the MacBook Pro with 14” M4 Pro 24GB 512GB or the M4 Max 16” 32GB RAM 1TB? I also have 200GB iCloud for files too. I need it for beginners photo and video editing, programming, web browsing, watching UA-cam videos, listening to music and podcasts with high quality audio interface and headphones amp. Maybe taking to university and cafes sometimes too.
@ Ok, thanks! And also, should I buy M2 iPad Air and Mac mini M4 or only M4 pro MacBook Pro 14” with maybe iPad mini 7? Which combo would you choose for both Mac and iPad setup for both university and desk use if I am not sure I will take out the Mac but the iPad maybe will take it out too?
i have the m1 pro 14 inch which can also get pretty hot but seeing 104 degrees on this was quite shocking, as well as seeing the fan speeds max out at a much higher speed than on mine too by at least 1000rpm
We have to wait and watch , with software updates and optimizations and Mac OS updates , the 16 in battery performance and life will definitely improve , too early to decide, but as always great videos from Max Tech team , keep up the great work
The video does not really show how much better the sound of the speakers in on the 16" (you need to hear it yourself). I can do video calls with the 16" all the day without headset - but it's really no fun at all with a 14" (sound quality and fan noise - I'm running some performance hungry apps during the day)

So, having a comparison of these will help a lot of users to see if has benefits overall in performance and features. please 🙏. Thanks in advance
14:19 Wait, wait, that battery performance .... You are comparing 46% (of 72.4kWh battery) to 48% (of 99.6kWh battery) like it was the same scale?! This means 14" used 54% of 72.4kWh = 39.1kWh for the same work where 16" used 52% of that 99.6kWh = 51.8kWh. 39.1kWh vs 51.8kWh, that is 12.7kWh difference. Seems like batteries would last very close, in time.
Yeah I don’t get that part. If it was 46% in the 14 inch what percentage would it have been if the unbinned was in the 14inch and measured at the same time? Maybe 35% roughly?
So what do you think in the 14inch should I get the 12-core or 14-core? What would be the battery life difference between them as in this video the 16inch has a larger battery so not sure what the battery difference is if it’s at 46% vs 48% what would it have been if it was in a 14inch?
I think it's awesome! Best implementation so far only the circular camera cutout is smooth. M4 iPad Pro was bad since the entire bezel all around was smooth.

I hope the Mac Mini Pro with unbinned chip does better, maybe with further optimizations. (Unbinned Mini Pro 48Gb 1 Tb was my pick) Apple is generally good about that. Coming from a base model M1, I am sure to be amazed right away. Enlightening review for the laptops, thank you.

I still believed that the Base M4 model should be the best for over 90% of the users. the M4 Pro model indeed shrink the power gap between various Pro models and Max models across previous generations, however the base M4 model already is a great powerhouse sufficient for most people. And you get the same chassis, same QD-miniLED display upgrade, same sound quality, same I/O support and mostly important, MUCH MORE BATTERY LIFE with much lower amazing price!
My first comment to you was Apple screwed all the 16” screen users. Just sucked 800 bucks out your pocket. Glad you finally got around to a real review.
According to my research there is no need to upgrade to 96W, it shortens life span of your battery and you win only about 20-30 minutes top with faster charging. But if you know that you always gonna use it unplugged and therefore you need faster charge speed to minimise your plugged in time - then go with a 96W.

I got the 16" MBP for for the screen size. The better battery and more capable pro chip were added benefits. Yes, apple has marketed and priced their offerings like the little bitches that they are, nobody will deny that. A base Pro chip in the 16" would have been totally acceptable, but this is the game Apple plays and the result is a love/hate relationship that everyone has, even if they won't admit it. The results of this nickel and dimming are that no-one is loyal to the Apple cause, they just pick them because they produce a capable product. When they stumble, nobody will waste a second jumping ship to a different brand. Tim Cook, I hope you're listening...
Agree for the most part, however they are still way ahead of the competition in terms of performance on their machines, that’s the love. The hate is paying an additional 200.00 for 1 tb, where on a machine of this caliber should come standard with the larger ssd. I would have the base cpu as well since the testing max did show not much benefit, but it sure does consume more power as well.

The rigs have to be the same in all respects other than the 12/16 vs. 14/20 (so both have to be 14”).
I wonder why some people in the Apple youtube community refer to a binned chip as the lower end chip. Even the higher end chips are binned into the higher category.

The question now, for me, coming from M1MAX/64GB - will I (or can I) be happy with the M4PRO/48GB, giving me better battery life for non-compute intensive tasks (80% of my day to day), or will I get bummed, for the 20% that I do need compute intensive tasks (mostly photo and video editing), that I didn't get up the M4MAX.
The dent in MBP 14" breaks my heart :D
Was strongly considering a 14 inch m4 Pro with nano texture and 2tb unbinned. Probably keeping my 16” m4 max glossy unbinned though
After watching this video, I feel like it makes more sense to go with the binned chip version of the Mac Mini instead of the full chip.
What mean by binned? Cant be overclocked?
@@ADHDOCDbinned version has 2 less performance cores in comparison to unbinned version. Actually these 2 cores are physically present on the chip, but they have been disabled as some of them can be defective (during manufacturing process). However as long as they are disabled they don’t affect stability of whole M4 Pro chip. There is no possibility to enable them.
I think upgrading from binned to unbinned M4 Pro is a very poor value.
Buy binned Pro or un binned Max.
It would have been interesting to include the 16" M4 Max to this and see if the price jump from the 14" Pro to the 16" Max is better justified than to the 16" Pro.
I have an M3 Pro 16” for work. I had an M1 Max 14” and now have a M4 Pro 14”. I thought I’d like the 16” more than I do, but honestly the portability of the 14” is totally worth it.
It would have been helpful of you let us hear the difference in fan noise on each machine, but thanks for the comparison. I'd love to know how the 24GB RAM in the M4 Pro compares to 32GB of older RAM in the M1 or M2 Pro.
I have a sound recording of the 14" M4 Pro fans (12 cores) on my channel.
💳 received 16. its insanely fast. after my Air 13 M1. but I was not ready for the size. this thing is HUGE.
Are you going to take it with you and carry it in your backpack/bag? it will be interesting to find out how uncomfortable it will become (I have 15" m3 and it's a pretty light thing)
@@KirillTr I would be glad to buy 15" m4 24gb instead, but don't want to wait 6 months.
I just checked for you, 16" fits perfectly all my backpacks. I think the size is about a standard office windows 15" laptop.
My only discomfort is to carry it one hand between rooms and floors in my house. m1 13" was a weightless.
Awesome!!!! Stoked on my choice and so happy to have it validated by you guys! The comparison I was waiting for. Thank you!
I had my heart set for 14" MacBook Pro M4 Pro chip. I usually like 16" but considering $$$, I thought I should go with 14" this time. You made it clear that I should go with 14" Thanks for such a detailed review-!!!
Useful comparison and much needed too. Thanks!
I use a RAID, redundancy in one enclosure.
What the heck did you do to that 14 inch? dented the f out of it
Also saw this lol
Really like your comparison. Amazing. Can you compare m1 pro vs m2 pro vs m3 pro vs m4 pro?
The choice is easy.
If you use a monitor go with 14 inch.
If you just use the MacBook itself go with 16 inch.
And if you travel?
@@raiiiargo with the “16 still. There’s no monitors in a hotel room.
I have a monitor and still love my 16"
Whenever I move elsewhere, family house, sofa, bed, office - having that 16" screen is a bliss.
@@Skaratak me too. 24” 4K At the desk.
That was an amazing test! This result will be a huge help in deciding which version of the MacBook to choose.
What’s up with the dent on the 14 inch? Is it more prone to denting?
have had an M1 Pro for 3 years, zero dents...
Only if you're a professional dentist.
I had the same worry
Yeh, saw it straight away in the back left of the 14". I've had no dents in my M1 MBP but certainly got a ding in my final Intel MBP when I had to put my personal bag into the cargo compartment on a small plane. Thought the M-chip cases were a bit more resilient.
What dent? Why am I not seeing any?
Which will give more performance m4 pro (12core CPU 16 core GPU)MacBook Pro OR Mac mini m4 pro (12core CPU 16 core GPU)
24gb 512 gb variant?
I think macbook pro have better cooling system otherwise they should perform almost same.
I went with the mini and no regrets
Can’t wait for a base 16 M4 max vs upgraded chip 16 M4 max video. Is the 36GB going to limit heavy multi-tasking?
Would love to unheard your thoughts for “on device AI” usage in future years from extra GPU cores and RAM?
Maybe it will come down to longer projects and exports. That better thermal architecture should help in the long run.
conclusion seems clear, a binned version is a better value for money deal, shame 16' doesn't have a binned version option
For sure or better performance something that makes it seem like we are getting our moneys worth.
The smaller one, it will be easier to carry and do everything no problem. 16" is overkill for your workload.
Thank you for making this video! It looks like I can save some money this year.
We have to wait and watch , with software updates and optimizations and Mac OS updates , the 16 in battery performance and life will definitely improve , too early to decide, but as always great videos from Max Tech team , keep up the great work
Makes perfect sense but I prefer the 14" size due to travel, so I'm one of those rebels buying the 14" M4 Max.
Ouch. Hope you like the extra heat. Everyone is saying the the Max chip in the 14” model is too much for a small chassis.
The video does not really show how much better the sound of the speakers in on the 16" (you need to hear it yourself). I can do video calls with the 16" all the day without headset - but it's really no fun at all with a 14" (sound quality and fan noise - I'm running some performance hungry apps during the day)
I wish someone would compare 16 core in 16" to 14" so we can see any thermal throttling or performance differences over long workloads
I just ordered 14" with CPU upgraded (w/48 GB of ram) for heavy photo management and editing. It will ship to me next week. if I don't forget about this, I will update to you later that It has any thermal throttling or not.
m4 pro maxed out is enough on 14" (96w power is more than enough) , there are only 2 reason to burn 300 bucks ( 1st more quietness (fans are generally quite) , 2nd u want big speakers.
3rd you want bigger display. (Most imp reason)
3rd: you want a bigger screen.
I bought the mentioned 14” and returning it on Friday to upgrade to the 16”. 512 gb is not enough so I’ll be ordering a 2 TB nano texture display.
I use an external monitor and my Vision Pro but still want the 16”
Really unimpressed with all the M4 machines for video editing. Keeping my M1 Pro for longer.
Hi Vadim, I think it will be ideal for a video MacBook M4 Pro vs MacBook M1 Pro. The upgrade cadence is now like iPhone, where users will tend to upgrade every 3 or 4 years.
What do you mean in time? , it’s still a big difference
Strange results, could it be a bug in 16" CPU/power management?
So what do you think in the 14inch should I get the 12-core or 14-core? What would be the battery life difference between them as in this video the 16inch has a larger battery so not sure what the battery difference is if it’s at 46% vs 48% what would it have been if it was in a 14inch?
Your wasting everyone’s time here, you already have a 12/16 and are trying to decide to return to get the 14/20.
Finally! I’ve been waiting for this video a lot , thanks guys
I believe you’re using the term binned in reverse. Binned is usually used for the better, not the normal chip.
The 14 inch is sufficient for most uses and is significantly lighter - this is the choice for me
Thoughts on nano texture Max? I’m wondering if it will wear over time and worth getting on 14 in?
I think it's awesome! Best implementation so far
only the circular camera cutout is smooth. M4 iPad Pro was bad since the entire bezel all around was smooth.
@ thanks so much! Yeah, I noticed that… I guess I heard that nano texture could wear on a very thin screen, but I’m hoping that’s not an issue on the MacBook as I hope to have for many years :)
@@JustineCooksVegan I would go look at it in person if you can. I bought the standard display and when I went to pick it up in store looked at the nano and decided it wasn’t bad, but for me good enough.with standard.
@@otwer22 thanks! I did but it was hard to compare in a very bright room with a skylight lol so of course the nano seemed very appealing :)
The m4 pro with the additional cores with the $200 upgrade is worth it instead of going straight for 16 inch.
It’s not
That’s what you took from the video, watch it again cause that’s not the case.
@ not at all. I do heavy editing and coding and for me the small upgrade works. I’m satisfied with it. If you don’t feel the same good for you
the 16 hands down is the best, everything is just better on it, and no its not that heavy at all lol....having all this power on the go especially traveling is insane, another is being able to use this for multiple days sometimes without charging is nuts as well...
Thank you, been holding off on what Pro model to get for Black Friday (hopefully they offer some Apple vouchers or something, for a purchase)
I feel like so many people didn’t even really pay attention to this review …. He is stating that the base 14 inch m4 pro in the standard configuration is a MUCH better buy and it is not worth upgrading the cores !
You should go harder on multitasking, real world multitasking with internet tabs, videocall running, a couple of heavy softwares open...
Export times aren't that helpful, those M series Macs are all fast enough for that
M3 Max vs M4 Pro, to decide more GPU power for games, or M4 is still good?
M3 Max more powerful
Please make a video comparing 14 pro and 14 max. Thanks.
You’re not going to want a 14” max they will throttle big time.
I believe there's a significant difference in performance between Capture One and Lightroom Classic. Why that would be the case I don't know but test results in a video by one of your peers showed it to be the case.
Really surprised there isn't more of a performance delta. It seems if you were comparing the same spec CPU and GPU, they'd be near identical.
I alrreday bought macbook m4 pro max 14 in model with 14 core CPU,36 GB . my work mostly memroey intensive ,now bit confused want to return and buy MacBook m4 pro with 14core , 48GB ram. here I am requesting you could please compare both version 🙏
How loud are the 14” & 16” M4 models by comparison to the M3 models
Does the 14" M4 Pro, priced at $1999, recommend upgrading the charger from 70W to 96W?
According to my research there is no need to upgrade to 96W, it shortens life span of your battery and you win only about 20-30 minutes top with faster charging. But if you know that you always gonna use it unplugged and therefore you need faster charge speed to minimise your plugged in time - then go with a 96W.
WHEN YOU UPGRADE YOUR CHIP IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY UPGRADE TO 96W ...
I'm going with M4 Max, 128GB unified memory and 14inch. This is my final laptop for a while. I like something small, compact and fast. I kind of hate my 16inch Intel MBP
Check videos for this, the max will throttle.
waste dont get max in 14 inch it will throttle so much that max benefits will go away. m4 pro 14c is more than enough
@@avienxyz i just like the fact is small/compact - haha. i'll consider the m4 pro.
@@avienxyz wow... glad i looked into this. i'm shocked. but i see m3 vids regarding this. should i go with 16inch if i am going to go with 128GB memory? or i don't need it. tbh i like the small stuff, easy to carry lol
@@HeyHammadAusafi I can’t make that decision for you, depends on your workload max gets you 1 more media engine ( mostly beneficial if you are professional video editor) + 2 performance cores+ 20 extra gpu cores ( mostly beneficial if you are running very heavy AI models) if you really need max would recommend 16 inch size that can cool everything properly but trade off is it’s heavy and bulky and not really portable, personally I have 14inch m4 pro 14c version with 24gb ram
OMG, his 14” M4 Pro MBP already has a dent in the corner of the lid. Strip him of his Apple Fan Club Card!
Do you recommend 12-core pro or the 14-core pro if I keep the laptop for 7 years?
The video show very little benefit, spend your money on more ram.
If you virtualize the noncut version
@@otwer22 Agreed. I went for the 12-cord 14" version with 48 GB of RAM.
I am sure 16 inch is better, but I just can't justify the price difference which around $900-$1000 in my country for buy the 16 inch with the exact same spec as above.
So far, I am happy about my purchase 14 inch M4 Pro. Mind blowing difference compared to my Intel 2019 MacBook Pro wew...
Please do a full M4 Pro 16" vs binned M4 Max 16" comparison!
Also, please do a bit more 3D and maybe Ai / stable diffusion stuff, instead of Figma.
Basically both 'entry configurations' on the Apple page :) Thx mate!
Could you please compare M1 Max with binned m4 pro MacBook Pro.
Want to know where to upgrade from m1x and what the min price I can spend to still get an upgrade
Dented 14" vs undented 16". What's your choice?

Thanks for comparison. I work mobile, usually in my car or on the go. Wanted the 16 for size but weight and extra costs (don’t need extra HP) for the extra $ I could buy an iPad and use as an extra screen with 14 mbp
These are ridiculous tests. Need sustained load on both CPUs and GPUs to really see 16” thermal envelope advantage. Results like 44 sec. vs. 48 sec. aren’t very meaningful. And if you want to really compare binned vs. full-fat M4 Pro chips, then use the same laptop size for both. The rigs have to be the same in all respects other than the 12/16 vs. 14/20 (so both have to be 14”).
murn i glad this video came just right after wanting to buy one
Is there already a dent on the 14" top?
Wish you did the Logic Pro comparison…. The P cores will make a difference in extra headroom…
Did you find any reasons why you can't select more than 36GB of ram with the 14-core M4 Max chip configuration?
Will the mac mini 12 vs 14 pro cores be the exact same results?
You CAN get the unbinned 14/20 core M4 Pro in the 14 inch MBP by the way, I know, I have it.
Are your numbers on benchmarking any different? Enquiring minds would like to know.
Yes, we mentioned it multiple times that you can upgrade for $200. The one we have is the 16" model which forces you to upgrade.
Who said you COULDN’T ? Lol that was one of the first things that was mentioned in the video
Thanks. Exact this question I had. Ich spend the money to the Nano- Display, not in the 14 Core-Modell.
I wonder why some people in the Apple youtube community refer to a binned chip as the lower end chip. Even the higher end chips are binned into the higher category.
Noticing the dent on the case on the 14!
Is there a 14' M4 Max vs 16' M4 Max in the works guys?
I'm planning on upgrading from my 14' M1 Pro MacBook Pro [out of RAM and Storage].
I'm not a huge fan of huge laptops [lol] because they're really not portable, but I don't want to spend so much money on the 14' without knowing if it can handle the M4 Max without going full F-15 Mode.
Would really appreciate a detailed comparison!
There’s been a lot of talk from this channel and others about Not Getting the Max chip in the 14”. Your use case might be different.
No disrespect intended

Still stick with my 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro, not that much different than the 16" M4 Pro when it comes to features like display and sound mainly. I dont do professional video or music work but power user.
Is it worth it at $1750 on Amazon?
