Small Town Stealth Camping

- Well, technically a hamlet, it used to be a village, but perfect for stealth camping. I packed my hammock to a great camp spot behind a ball diamond. Little towns are an excellent opportunity for stealth camping, there aren't the crowds of the big city, but there is the possibility locals will be more vigilant regarding people they don't recognize. Great camping trip overall though!

I like how Steve's idea of a town having everything it needs is just a montage of bars and liquor stores
Welcome to small towns in Alberta, the only thing to do is drink 😑
I dont think Canada HAS any dry counties, it would be , almost criminal
🤣🤣
@@infinymagnus here from Massachusetts U.S. and there's nothing to do here but drink 🤣
it's everywhere...
I certainly have never heard of any in Alberta anyway. The place I'm from had an overabundance of two things. Bars/liquor stores and churches. It was in the Guinness record for a awhile for the shear amount of churches per capita.

He seems so happy and himself doing something he loves. Recently I’ve been feeling down and I’ve been binge watching all of his camps. While watching Steve I forget about everything that’s been going on. It’s like a trance. He really deserves the world, never complains about anything. Just wanna say a huge thank you to Steve for everything he does. Living legend ❤️
Omg. Ditto. But its south Park* reruns. They programmed a bunch of shooting scenes in multiple shows in a row.
Strangely disturbing with all real life shootings. Cant they show videos of like water parks or something people having harmless fun instead. Thanks Steve.
Think about him if you ever spot someone sleeping somewhere.
For sure even if he just wants to wing it with a livestream tour of Hunkertown update. I'm going to watch. r🧡
Get a sleeping bag hammock and backpack get out for a night. You'd be amazed at how much better you'll feel after.
So true my friend. What’s your favorite camping Steve video?😊
Hey Steve, don't be too quick to throw out that particular non-DEET mosquito spray. The one you have is 20% icaridin (sometimes called picaridin) which in my experience (with heavy population of mosquitos in the summer in Japan) is actually better than DEET (I know hard to believe), but you have to treat it differently. It doesn't really repel them away but 100% prevents them from biting, but only in the exact areas you've applied it. So treat it more like sunscreen and thoroughly wet and spread it across all your exposed skin (though don't get it in your eyes). One reason it's better than DEET is that it doesn't really have any strong smell or sticky feel, and it won't melt plastic, so you can apply tons of it. 20% icaridin is lab tested as effective as 30% DEET but because it's easier to go ham applying multiple coats of the icaridin you can get protection that would take an uncomfortable amount of DEET to equal. I know it sounds like I'm shilling for it, but I just really wanted to inform you because I'm super glad I found out about it living here in with the amount of mosquitos in Japan. I enjoy your content and can see that mosquitos are an issue for you so just wanted to give a heads up on it. (BTW there are tons of other "non-DEET" sprays that don't do much at all, so check label to make sure it has 20% icaridin (or picaridin).
Thank you for the advice I will try it.
NICE TIP!!
What are you, a DEETective?
Thanks Kung

Funny how when I drive along the highway’s now, I’m always looking for stealthy spots for camping.
Yes, the non-biblical version of "what would Steve do?" :)
Yeah me to!
Same here!!!
Funny when I am driving along the highway I am looking for Steve. Haha
After all this time I finally realise why I love Steve’s videos so much: I’m so damn paranoid about everything I do, born of a childhood fear of getting in trouble for the most irrational things. But Steve, he just goes out there and is like “I’m literally going to walk into a forest and sleep there and just Not Get Caught”. THATS why I find so much cozy comfort in his content, the fact he can go anywhere and set up a comfy camp and be visibly so calm that nothing will go wrong.
Have you ever thought about sharing your stories on Reddit?
Things sometimes go wrong. But the more you survive things going wrong, the more you just know you'll be okay.
Me two. Caution is good, every thing else is in my head.

You've inspired me to stealth camp around town that I eventually sold everything I owned, and bought some high quality camping/hiking gear and I've been homeless for two years. I ended up saving a shit ton of money and have had a freedom to go and work wherever I want without anything weighing me down. What a thrill ride.
Sounds like a dream life, but i can’t imagine I could do that forever
You might also want to start experimenting with Fentanyl and Crack for the full experience.
Nice! Well depending on where it's done lol
I'm jealous AF. I've been thinking about doing that but not homeless per say, I wanna get another aatro van and slightly hook some stuff up. Now a daya it's easy af, especially in the US, you can buy the 7 dollar a month Subscription at Planet Fitness use it to workout and even better SHOWER lol. My friend had to do that for awhile. Idk if they have those in Canada or something like that.
How do you shower before work
I love how cautious and alert Steve is, like this little park might be safe now, but give it a few hours and there could be patrol cars and helicopters combing the woods 😂😂😂 It’s the perfect mixture between innocent and exciting.
It's Alberta..... we have a land mass equivalent to that of Texas with 4 million people provincewide, most of which in Edmonton and Calgary. Nobody is looking for Steve... ever lol. He is in the perfect place to stealthcamp lol
Lmao yes. I guarantee that guy and his dog doesn’t care at all about some random guy walking into the woods. Even if I was walking through the woods and saw someone sleeping in a hammock I’d just continue on like nothing happened 🤷♂️
yes! from here in Australia, its the best way to finally see what Canada is really like (away from the tourist hot spots): ''see Canada the Steve way''', I like it!
That's what so hilarious. You would think he might be a wanted criminal on the FBI's list or something at times xD

This is my first blind, I'm using it for coyote. Easy to set up and take down. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxLQGtOO9dXIsNktEeycGoIT6jtJJNTScA Definitely happy with what I got. If you are looking for something cheap to get you by, I recommed this blind it does the job just fine. I'm giving it a 5 star over all because it was better then I expected, I really thought with it being so cheap I was going to get what I paid for and I'm happy with it. Also I had my 11 year old son and a buddy of mine in it and it wasn't too cramped
"Nothing better than going to bed with trains in the distance." I quite agree, and thought I was the only one. It reminds me of my childhood, as a major RR line crossed through the center of my town.
I found the sound of a distant train very soothing as a child. Relieved anxieties of the day and fear at night after bad dreams or scary noises. Then 😴💤
As long as it's in the distance, anything works - even chainsaws.
@@microwavedinamerica3005 Not for me. 🤷♀️
Me too. I grew up on the edge of town with tracks about a mile away across empty fields. (Well, after a few years, it was no longer the edge of town and the fields weren't empty, but you could still hear the trains at night.)
I rented a place with my ex for a while near a rail yard, and it's hard to describe how soothing the sounds of a rail yard is. there's a lot going on there but it's all at a slow even pace. currently I live next to a passenger rail, those trains blast through but they're going really quick, will be gone in under a minute, and they're not very noisy, in contrast to a freight line which might have longer trains rumbling past for half an hour, which rumbling can be so loud you can't even talk to a person sitting next to you.

Stealth beer cracking tip:
Put the thumb of one hand over the little oval that opens and use the other hand to raise the tab as you press down a little with your thumb. Generally, this will mean that your thumb with both muffle the sound and the downward pressure will help the opening of it not to be as sudden, which means less overall force in a single area, which contributes to the cracking sound. At the very least, people might not know what they heard. Also remember that soda cans and energy drink cans all make that same sound so it's not like people immediately think beer when they hear it.
Great tips
That’s a good tip ! Is it me or does beer have that distinct cracking sound, I dunno it sounds different form pop and other carbonated drinks.
It can be done single handed and is even more effective at silencing if you use the meaty part of your palm (base of the thumb, the Thenar) pressed over the opening. Almost completely silent.
I almost want to ask why you know this, but I probably don't want to know.😂
Haha. It has been a handy(bad pun) 'skill'(?!) over the years. For example, sleeping newborn in left arm, stealth opening a can of coke with the right.
Steve, finding a drunk bum in the middle of the woods is an important milestone in any child's life. You have the opportunity to provide that experience and should take it.

Hey Steve. I've been watching your videos for about a year now give or take. One thing I always like about your videos is the meals you make, they look pretty good for camping meals, some of them are better than my own camping meals!!! I wish there was a way to compile all of your camping recipes into a book (Steve's camp cook book) lol; Without re-watching your videos and writing the recipes down. I also enjoy seeing your different camping style with each spot you camp. Keep up all of the good work :)
That is a great idea! Steve should totally do this, he’d make a bunch of money I’d wager.
I think the best way to stealth crack a can is to start pulling the tab so the edges crack, let some of the gas hiss out slowly, then put your thumb over the cut-out gently (not pushing because you don't want to push your thumb into the sharp hole!) but just keep your thumb over the metal while you pull the tab the rest of the way, your thumb blocks some of the high pitch of the "tinny" sound of the metal cracking apart and crinkling, the softness of your skin kinda muffles it in a way, if that makes sense. And you wanna do it all really slowly. Sometime I have to stealth crack a secret beer camping after my friend falls asleep because she's trying to stay sober and I don't want her to start craving a beer because she heard me crack it. Also do the same at home sometimes if I don't want my dad to know there's beer because he can overdo it sometimes XD so I have mastered the stealth crack pretty well.
I'm camping right now (not stealth though). I've noticed in every campground I've been to in the past year, everyone has an rv or camper. I'm the only one in the whole campground with a tent. It's like a glorified trailer park. Might have to do more stealth camping.
Thanks Steve!
Are you staying at private campgrounds? Most of those are designed for rv's as they can charge more. If tenting or even sleeping in your vehicle look for state/provincial or national parks. Cheaper and WAY better.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love Steve anymore he makes Donairs!!! My little Nova Scotia heart grew 6 sizes today!!!
Hello brenda how are you doing over there?
Your production value has skyrocketed over the years , nicely done Steve!
It's incredibly surreal to watch someone doing stealth camping in places I've been to or grown up near. Born and raised in Edmonton, my grandparents have a cabin at Wabamun. I don't know why it's so fascinating in a video when it was so mundane in reality!
Steve thank you so much for your vids. I quit drinking 79 days ago because I was drinking too much, but I enjoy sitting watching your videos and watching you enjoying a beer two. You always seem to bring me up when I'm down AKM Always Keep Moving!
The beginning part is absolutely my favorite. Growing up in a small town, and county, there is literally more bars than food places.
Same here! I live in a town of around 4000 people in Ohio, and we have 6 bars 😂
Just... so much love for the joy this brings me every week. I don't get to camp this weekend, but next weekend we will be, so this tides me over.
Steve, never used one of the hammocks except military ones, I am definitely going to get a couple now! Thank you! Great video.
I remember that he recommended hammocks by Hennessy, so I am thinking hammock by Hennessy and a bottle of Hennessy for the step 2wo, side of bear mace, just in case. Cheers from beautiful Colorado! 🥂
I've had the same hennessy hammock since 2012 and used it every year in very rough conditions. It still has basically no signs of wear. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
@@markfish8403 Colorado USED TO BE beautiful...🙄
A hammock is responsible for the absolute worst night I have ever had on the trail. You've been warned. The second night on that weekend I snuck into the campground further south on the trail. No way was I going thru another night in a hammock
Make sure you get one long enough for you - the Hennessy ones are borderline for many people, anything even shorter is a recipe for a *very* bad nights sleep, because there's not enough room to set it up so you can actually lie flat... 11'/3.3m and up (length of cloth) at a 30° sag and feet somewhat higher than the head works well for most. Also, consider getting an underquilt - insulation doesn't work when compressed, but we all know Steve is frost resistant to a ridiculous degree...
As always, some of the best camping content on UA-cam. No distracting music, sponsorships, or unnecessary intros. Just a guy having fun and documenting it. I've been under the weather recently and these videos have been the best. Hopefully I'll be able to get out there again soon.
I could not agree more with you!
Hope you feel better
Absolutely true, the best camping videos by far 👍👍
Im the same dude. He takes my mind off my depression. X
I'm with you intros and outros get skipped when I'm watching youtube. I also dislike the set-up camera walk-bys for b-roll clips. Once or twice a post is understandable but the "Watch me gaze off into the distance" clips are lame.
You’re such a nice guy Steve honestly. One of the good ones. Cheers to you and yours. 🍺🍻
Imagine meeting Steve at a bar or something and he casual brings up he has 1.41 million subs on UA-cam. You'd think it was a joke, he's the most laid back and non-pretentious person of this size. He's an international treasure.
Never camped and I love your channel. Spent 13 in a small town in Illinois & I loved it. Weather was great and the area looked lovely. Looking forward to the next stealth camping trip you bring all of us on.
I definitely agree about trains in the distance. I used to live along the river directly in front of a power plant that was a mile across the river. There was a train track about 75 yards behind my house. If the trains didn't put you to sleep the hum from the power plant would.
That “magic heat“ is Sterno. They do last six hours. It is what is often used to keep the steam tables warm at weddings and things like that. They do work great, low but steady heat. Thanks for the great video!
Don’t forget about strip club buffets!
You can boil water on them with the stove but it does take a while to do. I carried one when I used to hunt and camp o heat mre or what not.
I lived on cooking with Sterno. I had a little hibachi rack and 2 red bricks, and I could cook in my van when I was homeless for about 2 years.
One lasted me 2-3 days.
I've had some that said 2.5-3 hours. Last a week. I think alot depends on how your using it, and the temp. If it's cold out, they seem to go quicker. But warm out, n they last awhile
look for the Sterno Inferno, it’s like a jet boil stove for cheap.
Hello Steve!
The Thermacell seems like a lifesaver literally.
However, a cheaper repellent, I found is unscented incense sticks, upwind of me, chases skeeters away. They don't like any smoke. Speaking of smoke, bud is finally legal in Virginia! Hooray! Happy Trails Steve & everyone.....
I never leave comments but, Steve I hope you’re doing well. I love your videos and the personality you put into them. With much love I hope it gets better
Laughed about your “juicy brown recluse spider” in your boots, although it is not a laughing matter, I was bitten in my lower left leg about 4 hours into a trip from central MA to Aiken, SC (1000mi, 2days drive). Didn’t realize the severity of the situation until I reached SC in great pain and agony and then spent 2 weeks in University Hospital, Augusta, GA and almost lost my lower leg and suffered two operations. Recovery was long and painful. Now just a slightly disfigured and discolored limb is a constant reminder about what those little bastards can do!
My wife had a golf ball size hole in her butt after a bite. Scares the crap outa me.
my friend's dog died from a brown recluse bite, evil creatures!
What's funny is there is a good chance that if a hiker finds Steve, it will be one of his viewers bringing him a step 2 😆
That would be awesome. LOL
Compared to the winter it's really remarkable to see nature come to life during the warm months.
but not the mosquitos and pests proliferating, that part makes me miss cold camping. It's 100 degrees here now, hard to snuggle up and fall asleep
That was a world class Stealth camping spot. Scouting efforts do pay off from time to time. Dinner looked very tasty.
I love your "contentious" meals Steve! I love to cook also and even when I camp I like to be "fancy" sometimes. In fact I'm hopefully, if I don't chicken out or something, gonna do something kinda fancy when I do a stealth camp here in November some time. It's interesting what you can do even with limited elements. Last time I did car camping with my friend, I made french toast one morning (brioche slices in ziploc bags, cracked eggs into a jar to carry and spoon out when needed, and a bag of flour and bag of sugar, my camping "pantry" items), and the second day I made eggs, sausage and biscuits with sausage pepper gravy - made the biscuits at home the morning of departure and cooled them, put in a freezer bag, envelope of peppered gravy mix, eggs in the jar except for the 2 I used for french toast the previous morning, and a packet of heat-and-serve sausage links, 4 of which were chopped into the gravy at the end. I also love cooking a ziploc-marinated steak on the open fire or grill and sauteing onions and mushrooms in olive oil I brought in a little spice bottle I cleaned out. And sometimes I'm lazy and just put a can of chicken into a Knorr Fettucine Alfredo side. It's all good lol. I'm also gonna try to do either a cobbler or a crisp with ziploc baggeed ingredients and a can of fruit pie filling, we'll see how that turns out.
No other stealth camping videos even come close to yours steve! You're the best!
It’s nice to see someone do them that don’t have all the sponsor Bs flooding the video like others have done.

I would gladly do it in a heartbeat except instead of the step 2 being taken from him he would have him take me to one of his campouts with him instead. I have a few places I would love for him to camp at. He is getting closer and closer to one of fhem. In fact this video spot is about 20 min from one I was him to check out
The “backpacker” thermacell is the best model, as you can attach to regular isobutane cans instead of having to buy their ridiculously overpriced plastic fuel canisters.
But it is way less portable. The third model (phone like one with a handle) has a carrying pouch available which works wonders while slowly walking/fishing, hunting etc. The plastic canisters are refillable with lighter gas if you get an adapter and remove the gray node under the connector!
“What I really like about this place”….proceeds to show liquor signs! Love it Steve! Step 2
Those fuel cans can be found at restaurant supply stores, colloquially known by the brand name “Sterno”s. They’re used for buffet tray warming.
These videos are always so chill and are so calming. Makes me wish I didn't have to work and could go chill wherever

I love the casual gear reviews. I know nobody sponsors you, and you probably are leery of endorsements - but I for one, would love to see a page somewhere with links to all your fave products. As a a US viewer, I know I can't get some of them - at least those things that are Canada Tire exclusives - but you seem to have tested everything from DIY to high end gear, in all seasons and a variety of conditions, so a listing of your best finds could be super useful for others....

Stumbled upon your channel and now my kids and I are hooked! Keep it up.
The Thermacell devices work impressively. Last summer I was camping on Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. My tent is mostly mesh and when I woke up, above my head there had to be hundreds of mosquitoes on the outside of the mesh. I fired up the Thermacell and went to make breakfast. Even though the mosquitoes were obviously swarming I didn't get a single bite.
Ha, I live in the Upper peninsula. On the shore of Lake Superior just outside of Marquette
@@czenkusm I usually camp about 14 miles east of Grand Marais. I can remember when the road past Au Sable dune and the Pictured Rocks, from Grand Marais to Munising, was still unpaved.

So i remembered my mother has a massive blanket in the boot of her 4 wheel drive so if she has something big in the boot she puts the blanket over it so it doesn't scratch the boot lol anyway I by 1.30 i thought i need sleep so i got ot off the car had a stretch and then put the back seats down and the front driver's seat down so i could slip in and get away fast if needed i then drove around the car park looking for a nice undercover spot where i could see if needed but people really wouldn' t have the need to walk past and see me. I found a spot then slipped into the back without getting out off the car i put the blanket over myself I ate the banana I brought with me a had a little bit of water to wash it down. 😅 I slept like a baby lol I was so comfortable and warm i slept right up until they called me to get them from emergency at 4.30 am lucky i slept there because i just went home got into my work clothes and went straight to work. Sorry for the long story 😅 thank you Steve for all the lessons 👍 lol my step 2 was water lol
You actually inspired me to start sleeping in a hammock at my own house Steve! I think it's the highest quality of sleep, assuming it isn't cold. And it isn't cold in southern Appalachia

@@Mushroom.Madness. First off, the reason I say you're wrong with such confidence is that I've slept in hammocks almost every night for over 15 years now. I literally replaced the bed with a hammock stand. The hammock easily beats most mattresses.
The gist of it is that at least 11'/3.3m of cloth at a 30° sag angle and feet somewhat above the head is what works for most people. Unfortunately, UA-cam doesn't like links, but there are two forums (one English, one German) with rather descriptive names that have a *lot* of good info if you want to go down the rabbit hole. I live in the Midwest outside of Kansas City and the ticks are so goddamn bad you really can’t go out in the summer months without getting tons of them on you just walking thru the woods for 20 minutes. I also have that same thermo cell. Works pretty great for mosquitoes which is also really really heavy in the Midwest during the summer months. Thanks for the upload, had a few beers for you Steve!
Unfortunately I live in the same city as Steve and I have had my dog covered in ticks this year! Never been an issue before though.. anyways Steve if you’re reading this better start checking!
Love watching your videos and winding down from a long day
The long day is only past noon here
I am literally in the woods camping right now and finally got to crack a step 2 with you! Love the content Steve
Happy Step 2 to you!
The feeling of camping in a place discouraged, makes the adventure feels exciting 💀👌
Love how the beer fund credit has become a birthday graduation celebration feed that is truly awesome

Steve I'm sure you've had lot's of company's reach out to you, but glad you keep it simple. Please don't buy a drone and 10k worth of fancy film gear, your simplicity is what makes you amazing
As a proud resident of Halifax, thanks for the shout out!! Your videos are the best thing on UA-cam to me. Thanks!
i'm going through such a tough time. But Thursday evening is my time. Was looking forward to your video the whole week. Please don't change the way you make your videos. Cheers from Germany:)
Hang in there, bud. Hopefully things get better for you soon!
Unbelievable that your microphone actually picked up the sounds of the mosquitoes as you were setting up your hammock. I was wearing headphones, and it was really noticeable,
"What I'm making is what people eat after the bar in the middle of the night. They're usualliy the size of a football, some are the size of a baby."
Thank you Steve for sharing our culture with the world. Now I want a beef donair.
I love this dudes content. It's so relaxing to just keep clicking play. I'm here for the 1 million subscribers video.
Love the videos and that food looks so incredible!!!
Every day I drive into work I see the huge stone signs that list off the quad cities of Minnesota and I always think of how they are perfect for stealth camping.
I have both a screw-top thermacell that goes on a camp fuel can as well as the patio style from this video. Personally, I think the camp fuel ones are more effective, the patio style using their fuel cells doesn't seem to get as hot so less repellent vaporizes or something.
I have the original style, for like hunting and fishing, and the lantern style. The original style seems to work better of those two.
It's weird how I learned the cutting grass schedule of places around my area so I can Van life without being woken up in the morning
I’m sad, I want to see other camping videos for a change and have found nothing like “camping with Steve”…Steve your are the meaning of camping for enjoyment. Keep on camping.
Always “A Hoot” Steve! The Humor is always on point!
Best quick camping vids on UA-cam. Bring back crazy neighbor!
You're living the life, Steve! Can't say the same for myself.
I'm not even a camper, but I like your videos. They're fun. I especially enjoy your stealth camps. But I like others you do too. The satellite internet one was way interesting to me.
Fun, relaxing video, Steve! Perfect thing to watch after a stressful week!
Great video Steve. The forest sounds of the wildlife must have been relaxing to listen to as well.
This video hit two of my favorites too... The sound of rain on my shelter - the heavier the better - and the distant train...
In Europe Döner Kebab is very common street food. And it amazes me how Steve did this variant^^ Put some salad in and please dont overload it with meats so you can actually eat it. But the worst thing is, i want one now but its already late here
Great video as always
So great to see you hammock camping again! It’s been way too long. More hammock camping please!
