The fault is more likely the batteries than the ebike kit, since it worked on 24v after you disconnected a cell. The BMS in one battery probably hit the low volt cutoff.
@@campingwithsteve LiFePO cells also normally read lower than Li-ion - 3.2v per cell vs 3.7v per cell (nominal, not full charge). There may be something kooky in how the eBike controller is reading those voltages. But still, I saw the meter at the start there reading 100% charge, when you'd think it'd read 90-something percent if that were the difference. Look forward to the result on this one, that's interesting.
Watching camping with Steve is helping me beat the heat and feel cool when its 98* outside and I live in a pop up camper with no ac in Texas with 80% humidity
Steve I look forward to living vicariously through you on these adventures every single week! Thank you so much for your dedication and your pleasant, always calm and cool demeanor.
Hub drive has one issue you must address. Because of the torque the spokes loosen. After each trip give them an inspection. On the trailer, with all the weight, do the same. Lift the wheel, lay your fingers inside the spokes close to the axle and then with your fingers move the rim back and forth. You'll feel it if the spoke nipples are loose.
Also, make sure you have zip ties and practice using them to true a wheel with junk wheels ahead of time. You can look it up, but you wrap it around a fork leg and cut the ends to a point and set the tip just touching the rim. You do need to learn which spoke to tighten to pull the rim the direction you want, but never loosen if you screw up. If you check it daily at least, they shouldn't get too out of wack to fix. As a back up to the back up, zip ties shouldn't be the primary tool, a brake pad can be rigged to do the same with less precision. Oh also, brake disks should be checked! They can be straightened with channel locks and you can use the zip ties to check. I am a wheel builder.
I can imagine Steve converting a bike to a "rail- bike" adventure. I'm sure there are abandoned rail lines nearby.. my friend did this on the old San Diego & Arizona Eastern railroad. Welding two beach cruiser bikes to a steel basket. And guides to the tires. It worked a couple miles. Propelled by a tiny gas motor. But we drove this mess on dirt roads. Fun.
Camping with Steve kept me going on my hike across America now this is the first one I get to see as I thru hike the PNT. Another 11 episodes and I should be hitting the Pacific ocean. Thanks Steve
Both of you guys were a big influence on my decision to hike the AT. Sitting in my tent by a creek in PA mile 1112 watching Steve on his bike. Thanks to you both!
One of the thing I've been considering for camping trips like these is a pop-up tent. Even though it takes up a lot more room, it's so much faster to set up and take down, and you have to do that at least twice a day when you're on the road. Plus if you have to stop to get out of the rain fast, you can just pop up that tent.
Pop up tents don't have a lot of strength and generally aren't well made or high quality materials. The day that you you get caught in heavy rain or wind it'll let you down.
You bring me such relaxation my friend you actually given me the motivation to make videos of my own and i enjoy it so much just my way of saying thank you are doing and bringing us along with you on these trips
I just completed an e-bike add-on to my old (over 30 years old) CCM bicycle! :) I didn't use a kit though it has a 24 volt motor on the back carrier and a big #20 chain to a 10 or 12" diameter gear :) .. I put the battery i the trailer tooo (out of a wheel chair) and the speed controller mounted to plywood on the handle bars ... Not much off the line, but super on the straightaways!!
That looked like alot fun except for the battery issues. Probably it pulled alot more power than you thought. Give us an update when you know for sure. :)
I think it would be interesting to see you try to stealth camp with just what you can fit in cargo pants and a cargo jacket or vest cuz I think you can get pretty creative with that
A tip for the trailer Steve- go to a bike store and get the solid rubber tyre's for it, they will never get a puncture or go flat. They are also great for off road E-bikes/mountain bikes BUT being solid rubber, they make the ride quite a bit more bumpy. So Id just get em for the trailer and MAYBE the front of the bike if you find a cheap one to try, but def dont do the rear bike tyre unless you enjoy feeling every bump thru the seat to ya arse.
Just started the video super excited to keep watching but I wanted to say I have owned two e-bikes in my life and in my opinion generally speaking you get what you pay for and it is good to spend extra money on what will feel like a very expensive ebike will pay off over the time that you own it that's my recommendation you don't be afraid of the price tag it is more likely worth it than not of course always do your research stick with brands that you've heard of or that you can find UA-cam reviews you can find content on those bikes always do your research but you get what you pay for.
@@wmluna381 I own the rad power bikes, rad running for a year now and I love it. And I previously owned the lectric XP from lectric ebikes I would still have that one but unfortunately it was stolen. So Rad power bikes, and Lectric ebikes are great places to start.
Thanks for another great video! You're inching closer to my goal of motorcycle camping. I believe that I'm 100% set up and in the "what can I do without to lessen the load?" stage. It's 100°F in N. Louisiana and getting hotter, so I guess I'm sidelined from camping until late September or October. No way I can sleep in 80° temps at night! please provide us some updates on the e-bike! Very cool stuff!
Motorbike camping is great. I took a 3 week trip last summer from eastern europe to wales and back and still arrived home wanting more. I'm still optimising loadout but I have a top box, 2 panniers and a waterproof bag I strap onto the pillion so can afford to pack about a week's worth of everything.
I like your videos a lot. Great escape entertainment for me. It's like going camping in interesting places and I don't even have to do any packing. Thanks for that and I can't wait to see where you take us next 👍
One of the features of LifePo4 batteries is that they have a very flat discharge curve. They maintain a constant voltage through about 90% of their capacity and then drop off very sharply. For this reason, you usually have to measure consumption via monitoring current through a shunt rather than monitoring voltage. I expect your batteries will be fine, they'll have an internal BMS which will have shut off the power before you over discharged them.
Just a heads-up with the front motor. Just be careful, they are known to break front forks or the drop out for the wheel. Also make sure you're using a torque arm for that wheel with the motor on it.
I've always felt that midmount motors were better. I prefer that the bike be a pusher, and not a puller. Plus, having that motor up front effects steering and it is unsprung weight. Time to throw a bafang mid-drive on. Have a 2wd bike. Heck, if you're going to be hauling tons of batteries around, toss a motor on the trailer too.
Interesting video Steve, as always! I have watched a lot of videos concerning travel trailer LiFePO4 battery conversions. One thing that they always include is NOT a voltage meter, but a state of charge/battery monitor meter. Something like the RBM500-CA from Renology. When you charge them up, it shows how many Amp hours are left available, instead of volts. As some of other comments have said, LiFePO4 batteries can show 100% and then 0% with no in between. If you get yourself a BMS, and that battery monitor, you should have a more accurate view of what you have left. The BMS will allow all batteries to charge equally so they all have the same charge. Cheers!
I agree you shouldnt do sponsorships, but you should let companies sending you stuff to review. Letiing them know of course that you will be honest about your review.
@@Ozmandius no, a sponsorship is when they pay you to show their product and say it a good product. A review is when they only send you a product to test and give your honest opinion. Sponsorship = a commercial for said product. A review is an honest test and opinion.
I considered getting this same kit, but decided to go with a 48v rear hub setup instead. Costs a little more but it's worth it. You just get better traction in the dirt when the rider weight is over the powered wheel. Converting the rear hub is harder, and involves even more swearing, but the end result is something that handles a lot more like a bike is supposed to feel. I'm a big fan of these conversions. For under a thousand bucks US, I built one that can pace car traffic. Quite a thrill to do on my $8 thrift store bike. I was talking to another ebiker about off grid camping with a solar charger. Basically ride until the battery dies, set up to camp and charge the battery over a couple of days. Bring enough supplies to last until the battery charges back up. He was essentially describing a trailer setup like this, but with a pivoting solar cell. Because the cell would need to be tilted toward the sun at all times for optimal charging. I just wonder how long it would take to charge up, and how attentive I would need to be at constantly realigning the panel.
Steve can you speak on your experiences with ticks? in southern Ontario they are LITTERED everywhere in the woods and its ABSOLUTELY SPOOKY. I'm afraid to go in there for any reason.
Another pure Steve but with a lot of prep that went into it. Just when I thought you would pull out a fancy multi tool like other UA-camrs, out comes the simple crescent wrench. Thanks for keepin it direct and stealthy.
Love your videos, man. I got caught once because, at night, a flashlight on that tall grass shows the path I trod through to my camp. From the road right to my tent. I walk the the tree line now even if it takes a little longer! Have fun, Steve!!
Was just think that as well. I always walk an indirect route through tall grass. Or just stick close to the tree line as you say. MUCH less obvious that way.
@@nevaehmorgan4030 They tore my pack and tent apart looking for anything illegal and found nothing. They told me I better have everything packed up (after they threw all of my camp gear, clothing, and supplies all over the ground and put several holes in my tent) and gone before they came back. So I haphazardly stuffed everything back onto my bike and was gone in minutes. This was in the middle of the night. It was a scary ride down the highway until the sun came up. I took a nap in a local park and was back on the road to freedom.
Nice! I've been saying for a few years now, that electric rideables will start to see a massive increase in these sorts of uses. I myself have heavily explored the idea of backpacking on an electric skateboard; just wrapped up a four episode, nearly 300km adventure on it. I've also tried using my Super73 to do the Durham section of the Trans Canada Trail
Awesomes self e-bike build. You stacked the power! Life always has kinks. I've been interested in doing my own e-bike for my kid and me but the price is crazy. We love remote primitive camping too. May I suggest since you were near a pond taking a pop-can of chili on your next trip. You can eat the whole can with the bread you said you brought. Use just a drop of dish detergent with a brush to clean the can and your hands, face completely repack your trash to keep site clean and I think that should keep you clear of bear. Honestly though I've never camped near bear infested areas. I have had plenty of groups of raccoons try to raid me of food and supplies. Stay blessed. Loved your video. Keep the adventures coming.
Another quality video. Sorry this one didn’t work out perfectly but at least you have a great story to tell! You always learn the most when things don’t go the way you expected. Keep up the great work! Thanks for taking us along on all your adventures 👍
The planes look like they might be the CL-215 Superscoopers (or something similar) that our local agencies here in southern California lease out from Canada every year during fire season. They pretty much always fly in pairs (I'm not sure why, but they do). And they are yellow and red like the ones you're showing.
They Looked like C-130’s to me. The wings high up on the fuselage and the nose are the giveaway. . Hercs have a massive tail which I think is what we can see on the second plane.
The company Hurley makes E-Bikes at a pretty reasonable price. I picked up their single speed model for around 600 Freedom dollars. So like 700 something maple syrups. Its been a great bike so far. Ive put roughly 57km on it so far. And the range with the pedal assist is pretty great. I can get around 32km on a single charge.

Also the times you’ve accidentally called crazy neighbor by his name!! Definitely want to see you and corporals corner do a collab, maybe a weeks worth.
I was also thinking CC would be an interesting cross over, the hardcore survivalist meets the hardcore fresh bun enthusiast. I think CC could learn a thing or two from our Steve, let’s make it happen lol
I'm sure that you're on top of things, Steve, but scam "sponsor offers" have been hitting channels pretty hard recently. Not saying that the Gear Top offer was a scam, but the scammers are spoofing real companies that they think channels would get excited about. It's possible they have been watching but aren't who they claim to be. Stay safe, (online and off, as our dear sweet UA-cam overlords would say 😂)
those big batteries are normally just a bunch of individual small cylindrical cells all spot welded together inside. It's very probable that you damaged one internally as they are actually not at all okay with being beat around like that. If you did in fact end up with one broken one after this, it's worth it to crack it open and try to locate a broken connection. Safeties in consideration and all that. your better bet is giant prismatic lifepo4 cells, they come in rectangle and you can even distribute them around the bicycle if you want to ditch the trailer entirely. I would for sure do that and go with saddle bags and a rear cargo rack for the gear

There are channels on my subscription list that sometimes I second guess. Basically all channels at some point I question how much ill actually watch them. Or if its even worth subscribing. But with Steve. Never. I would never second guess my subscription to this channel. If steve stopped making vids millions of peoples lives would take a hit. A monumental blow to the mental health of the masses. Hope u understand truly how loved you are steve.
The fault is more likely the batteries than the ebike kit, since it worked on 24v after you disconnected a cell. The BMS in one battery probably hit the low volt cutoff.
I just tested the batteries and they check out ok, time for an amazon warranty claim I think
@@campingwithsteve Have a look at what Keith Maclean said up above Steve.. technology... you know its not going to be straight forward!

Ouch. I couldn’t do that.

Love it - very informative Steve especially when there is a FAIL. keep up the honest reviews and always enjoy those Step 2s.
@messin with mikeyup. just like a guitar string!
Welding two beach cruiser bikes
to a steel basket. And guides to the tires. It worked a couple miles. Propelled by a tiny gas motor. But we drove this mess on dirt roads. Fun.
Hell yeah! I'm surprised they're so cheap for conversion kits. Thanks for the video Steve.
After this they will go up a hundred bucks. Especially once they got hit with a bunch of orders.

Watching this while stealth camping in my own garden 😻
😎
Steve is so close to 1 million subscribers and does a diy bike project. Makes it more realistic for the rest of us.
Most realistic would be Steve taking a $20-100 mountain 🚴 like the rest of us. He would've gotten through that tall ass grass just fine lmao xD
You bring me such relaxation my friend you actually given me the motivation to make videos of my own and i enjoy it so much just my way of saying thank you are doing and bringing us along with you on these trips
Good on you for wearing a high vis vest on your bike. It really really helps drivers spot ebikes.
Raisins could give or take so glad your precious furbaby is safe

That looked like alot fun except for the battery issues. Probably it pulled alot more power than you thought. Give us an update when you know for sure. :)
Will do!
E-bike stealth camping is a great addition to the channel -- I hope you get a rig working reliably so you can go on more ebike adventures.
I had a pretty crappy end to a pretty good day today, things got bogus. Was preoccupied.
Now I'm not, thanks Steve. You rule!
I think it would be interesting to see you try to stealth camp with just what you can fit in cargo pants and a cargo jacket or vest cuz I think you can get pretty creative with that
Great idea
A tip for the trailer Steve- go to a bike store and get the solid rubber tyre's for it, they will never get a puncture or go flat. They are also great for off road E-bikes/mountain bikes BUT being solid rubber, they make the ride quite a bit more bumpy. So Id just get em for the trailer and MAYBE the front of the bike if you find a cheap one to try, but def dont do the rear bike tyre unless you enjoy feeling every bump thru the seat to ya arse.
It's official. Steve is my spirit animal.
Huge fan of the channel Steve. My kids and I love watching your adventures… hunker down .. from Ontario
There's no real freedom without danger and vulnerability.. Kind of the whole point I think, another great vid Steve, good stuff
So what's a short list of 3 brands to start some research on?
@@wmluna381 I own the rad power bikes, rad running for a year now and I love it. And I previously owned the lectric XP from lectric ebikes I would still have that one but unfortunately it was stolen.
So Rad power bikes, and Lectric ebikes are great places to start.
@@JayTheDragonKing Awesome, thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
Stealth camping in a safety vest. What daring! Keep it up and stay safe, steve!
Any company that sends you a product expecting a 100% positive review doesn't really understand what a "review" is
Always entertaining!! I never miss an episode.
Steve my man you literally have no fear, I tip my hat to you
One amazing thing I have learned from Steve is to always be positive, things really are not that bad.
We love stealth camping. It’s comforting
Just a heads-up with the front motor. Just be careful, they are known to break front forks or the drop out for the wheel. Also make sure you're using a torque arm for that wheel with the motor on it.
had that happen, good call
I've always felt that midmount motors were better. I prefer that the bike be a pusher, and not a puller. Plus, having that motor up front effects steering and it is unsprung weight. Time to throw a bafang mid-drive on. Have a 2wd bike. Heck, if you're going to be hauling tons of batteries around, toss a motor on the trailer too.
Try the thermacell backpacker. It takes the butane/propane large canisters so you don’t have to keep buying the small refills.
Hell yeah brother, the best part of my Thursday! Keep up the hard work and awesome content Steve! By far the best channel on the tube!
I totally agree! I watch this channel like a tv show. Thanks for the great content, Steve!
It really is a nice break from all the doomer channels.
You must’ve found the one sunny day we’ve had recently to film this. Great video! 😀
Cheers!
I have the Victron BMV-712 bluetooth model. Works well in my camper van. I guess it wouldn’t add to much weight to a e-bike scenario.
I agree you shouldnt do sponsorships, but you should let companies sending you stuff to review. Letiing them know of course that you will be honest about your review.
That's a sponsorship homie.
@@Ozmandius no, a sponsorship is when they pay you to show their product and say it a good product. A review is when they only send you a product to test and give your honest opinion. Sponsorship = a commercial for said product. A review is an honest test and opinion.
I love my e-bike, it's an extension of my own body. Which is useful given the arm and leg I had to pay for it!
Lol, at least you've got your third leg as a spare, right? :)
Love you Steve! Great video as always, you got me interested in getting a kit like this!
Steve is livin the dream
Nothing better than when you are out on an adventure are thinking... this is either the best or the worst idea.
I was more concerned about your batteries in the rain than the whole camping trip lol Always good content sir Steve.! :)
the batteries are pretty hard to short, you'd be surprised. The problem was with his cable sizes
Steve can you speak on your experiences with ticks? in southern Ontario they are LITTERED everywhere in the woods and its ABSOLUTELY SPOOKY. I'm afraid to go in there for any reason.
DEET. Even in tick-infested areas, as long as you cover your legs in DEET, you'll be fine.
He has talked about ticks in his videos.
Spooky? Lol
What happened when you were caught? Do tell. 😳
@@complementarychaos WOW! Glad nothing terrible happened. I often think about some type of Smith and Wesson protection....
@@markpowell8922 my old eyes just yellow aircraft shaped objects flying in tandem and took a WAG. You're probably right.
I’m guessing 600 American and 700 Canadian??? Hahaha that’s how I’m going to refer to Canadian money now hahaha thanks
I love the way you are just honest about everything! Even about the sponsors Steve. I have been subscribed from the RV days and single days and am here for much much more!!!
Put the same hub on the front of my Electra Townie 21d, it works great!
