Abandoned Campground Heat Wave Stealth Camping

  • I finally got to camp in a spot I've been checking out for quite a while. It's an abandoned campground in the city of Edmonton Alberta. This was a city-owned campground and now it's just used as a park. It was quite hot, quite busy, but made for a very fun stealth camping trip. There was a heat warning of course, but not quite too hot for camping like last week.

If you REALLY want to be stealthy, you don't cook hot food. Can of spam, shnieders pepperetts, can of beans, crackers, V8. All that extra weight in gear. Especially when its bitch hot and you don't need the calories. More room for step 2. Also jeans aren't a good choice for outdoor activities.

I really love the idea of making bean, rice, and cheese burritos as a camp-fare dinner but the one thing EVERYONE doesn’t do is reheat and partially toast their tortilla. If you hold the tortilla towards the open flame of your camp stove or burner and lightly toast it on both sides it totally makes a monumental difference in the overall texture and taste of not only the tortilla but it makes them so much easier to fold into your classic burrito shape. Even when you’re not camping, I recommend to do that on your home stove top providing you have a gas stove. It makes a world of Difference. Once you start toasting your tortillas over an open flame you will never eat a cold or room temperature one again! You can achieve the same thing on a grill by placing it on a grill grate for several seconds on each side or until you get some light grill marks. You just want them to get a little color on both sides. Then again I’m a professional chef. Either way I highly recommend it to those who’ve never done that to try it. You won’t regret it. Cheers!

For those not in the know Steve's choice of "step two" is two Alberta stories in one can.
Blindman Brewing is from Lacombe, Alberta and named after the Blindman River which is a tributary of the Red Deer River system in central Alberta.
"Five of Diamonds" refers to the classic lure pattern from Len Thompson Lures which is also located in Lacombe, Alberta. This company has made 55 million fishing lures since they opened over 90 years ago in 1929. A Len Thompson spoon is a classic for a reason, a real workhorse piece of tackle for northern pike, trout and salmon.
With an assortment of sizes and patterns of Len Thompson spoons and Panther Martin Spinners (made in Thornhill, Ontario) you can catch just about every fresh water fish in Canada.

Anyway, THANKS for answering the question about the meaning of the names, it’s all very interesting. I’ve only been able to visit Canada once, some years ago. Beautiful place! It’s definitely on my list of places to visit & spend much more time, when I finally get the chance! In one video Steve was collecting fresh clean stream water from a pipe: AMAZING! No hiding from dogs when you are doing a mosquito fog, I suspect they can smell that. Sunset is prime walking time, Canada and places like norther Michigan or Wisconsin always cool down quickly once the sun sets.

There's so many people on that trail there is no reason for the dog to alert unless directed to.

I like how you capture the real life happenings like them hikers an dog rolling up on you. You DIDN'T EDIT it out. It's showing what it's really like to STEALTH CAMP.

There's a huge park by my house in Colorado and during lockdown I really missed camping and backpacking. So I made a ring in the park of old tree branches and then wove grasses and weeds into the perimeter to create like a natural fence. I thought for sure it'd be discovered, but for 8 months I camped there along the river. I even left an old tent and chairs there. From the trail it was almost invisible. Finally a homeless man moved in and I told him it's his if he wanted, and he still lives there

    It's cuz he's LITERALLY US

Dude, if that’s in Edmonton you could set up a blaze orange tent and the hikers/ runners/ cyclists wouldn’t look twice. There are so many people camping in the parks and river valley.

The people hiking make me think a good strategy while close to inhabited areas would be to constantly say "I know you are there, Steve"

Oh Dude that would be so funny if folks did it and he caught it on audio! OK all you Canadian fans you need to just randomly holler this out any time you see a patch of trees or a small town sign that someone could sleep behind. Well not just the Canadians we ALL should be doing it. But They have a better chance as I don't think he's pulled off a stealth camp in the US or England or Egypt or ... (insert country here) But I could just see someone randomly shouting that into the trees in their given country as some random passer by stops dead in their tracks turns and hollers back HUNKER DOWN!
