Kudos bro! Keep the videos coming! Also you should do a few videos on installing all the different gauges and how to install them into the eyeball vent.

Thank you for making this video!! I'm convinced in keeping my 1.8 and having fun with it, and upgrading to a bigger project when I can actually afford it.
+GenuineGeoff Haha no problem. My first Miata was just supposed to be daily driver, but once I started modifying it I realized that they are super awesome cars.
Great advice and guidance for a first timer like me. I am buying the parts for my car and was considering doing it in stages like yourself. I didn't even realise that I could have the Megasquirt installed before I even thought about the turbo! Thanks for the video!
A lot of these things, I did not do. My engine and turbo were out of the salvage yard, and my megasquirt was self-tuned. Gone through 2 head-gaskets and cracked one head. This is quite the learning experience it seems.
7:00 Take the oil pan off get new gasket so you can do it the right way other than this Perfect video. I am in the market for a miata for a fun car. saving to pay cash but I have my eye on a Hard top conv. Black on black to turn into a drifter. Thanks for the video
Only issue being that on this car there is a crossmember directly under the oil pan, so removing the oil pan is an engine-out job. Hence the "shortcuts" with greasing the drill and using tape to stop it going in too deep.
Great video! Walks through the basic process pretty darn well. I found the interfooler pretty hilarious, but totally understood if it's a daily driver. It took me about 6 days to turbo my Miata (including fabricating the manifold/downpipe, and only working limited hours on it). One thing to note, the two ports you used for vacuum/boost reference right by the throttle body aren't the cleanest signal. The best place to reference is to tee off of the fuel pressure regulator line for Megasquirt and the boost gauge.
+Adam Watson I use the throttle body port for the boost gauge, and have tee'd off the FPR for MS. I do want to try to tee off the FPR for the boost gauge though as the readings aren't always consistent with MS.
Should also prime your turbo! Crank the motor with the spark plugs removed/coil pack disconnected, or fuel pump fuse disconnected. Just do the engine cranks and gets some oil to the turbo
Would be super interested in Megasquirt install. Trying to wrap up my research for my turbo miata build so i can pull the trigger on the parts! Thanks for the video!
I started down this same path! Getting the engine healthy, got injectors and Megasquirt... then my engine lost compression so Im rebuilding it and starting over. Please make the this of Install/Setup of mesgasquirt!

Fell Rider I can't reply to your comment so hopefully you get the tag. At idle, if you have a 1.6L running the stock fuel configuration ("batch injection") you want to be in the mid 13's for a stable idle. If you have a 1.8L or a 1.6L with sequential injection you can shoot for 15.0 or so. In boost, mid 11.s is perfect. If you're in boost but AFR's are fluctuating, it could be a variety of things. What fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator do you have? What ECU?
I bought a new Miata straight from the dealership in 1996, and although it was no street bruiser the power to weight ratio isn't all that bad for a stock vehicle. I like the turbo idea though. There's no such thing as too much power.

phaques1 I just published an "Introduction to Megasquirt" a few days ago, and I am filming "How to Install & Set Up Megasquirt" this weekend :) I'm going to try to have it up by Monday.
Dude, excellent video. The only thing I'd say you left out was upgrading the oil system to meet the demands of high horsepower and a turbo. I would think you want at least a pan with one additional quart of oil a higher pressure oil pump (additional 15-20 psi) and an oil cooler. I personally would put a small functional scoop in the hood that send cool air directly onto the turbo body(80's 300ZX style) Thanks for the video man.
+hotrodsather Thanks! I'd ahve to say though after 29,000 miles near the known limit of the stock internals, and tracking/autocrossing every 1-2 months as well as daily driving, I'd say oil system upgrades are optional. Once you get up to the 275+whp level it's time to start thinking about an oil pump, but that's primarily because the Miata engine's lack of balance likes to crack the stock gears; the upgraded pumps use billet gears. A side effect of those pumps is higher oil pressure though.
@Jakub Doulan is that why 99% of turbo builds and stock turbo cars have blow off or recirc valves? As soon as you close the throttle plate all that pressure between the compressor and the throttle body has to go somewhere. if it can't escape though a blow off or recirc, it will try to force its way back though the compressor. At very low boost it's not as big of a deal but the more pressure you have in the system, the more damage it can do to the turbo.
+TheCarPassionChannel But you said that your blow off valve is hooked after the throttle body. Why? Does it operate on vacuum or pressure? Because if it opens with pressure it makes sense to have it's control line before the throttle body.
Wolfshark Blow off valves open using vacuum, not pressure. As soon as the intake manifold has lower pressure than the intercooler piping, the BOV is pulled open by that difference in pressure. It's basically a valve with intake piping on one side and manifold pressure on the other, it needs that manifold pressure signal to open.
+TheCarPassionChannel They have bypass valves for emission reasons, in Australia if you go to a drift or drag day most people aren't running a valve, including people pumping 30psi+ out of turbos for years without issue.
TheCarPassionChannel First part I'm talking about recirculating valves as that is what every factory turbo car runs (at least I don't know any that runs a blow off valve), second part I'm talking about valves in general.
Linus Vingesand Typically anywhere from $1500 to $6000 for a basic stock-engine setup. There are a lot of variables. The setup on my car here was around $3800 including drivetrain modifications. I also have a playlist on my channel of 10+ Megasquirt videos 🙂

dane5331 What kind of things would you like me to address in the MS video? I'm kinda taking suggestions from everybody, I will probably release it in the next 2-3 weeks.
TheCarPassionChannel I was thinking any main features you used to get it running right with just the injectors before the turbo install and after the turbo install, and if you have any tricks for the infamous idle issues with AC on or just idling settings in general.
dane5331 Sounds good. Unfortunately idle is borderline witchcraft to me as well as many others running MS, I have all of my idle systems deleted so I probably won't be covering much there other than how my car is set up.
TheCarPassionChannel Yes good idle with MS does seem to be nearly impossible. Seeing what you have done for your setup will be great. Excited to see the video man! Keep em coming!
***** What kind of things would you like me to address in the MS video? I'm kinda taking suggestions from everybody, I will probably release it in the next 2-3 weeks.
The mega-squirt video would be great, if you could talk about the different mega-squirt systems that would be even better like pnp, ms1&2 as well as the diy ms systems. I myself am looking into a diy ms!
dailydriver55 I won't be able to say too much about the DIY as I've never built one. But if you're good at precision soldering, and good at following directions, then you can save a lot of money with a DIY!
I need a video for the NC Miata! I'm looking at getting a NC 2.0 Sport (LSD, Bilstein shocks etc..) but want to find a cheap way to make around 276bhp (the gentlemans agreement).
You have some great videos. Keep up the great work. I'm in the process of piecing together a T25 oddball setup for my 1.8. It is one of the T25's from a 300zx...which you probably already know have the unique non standard exhaust housing flange. I already had one laser cut so I can make a downpipe and run an OEM nissan gasket on it.
The NA6 1.6 is the same 1.6 from the AWD turbo Mazda 323 gtx. So yes. The 1.6 /was/ designed for a turbo. That's why there's a bung on the other side that's not used.
Cullen Duncan It won't be overkill. That 2554R will spool like a banshee hooked up to a 3" exhaust. You should easily see 10psi by 3000RPM even on a 1.6.
Maybe in a few weeks I can post up a video when it's fully tuned. I had the old school greddy turbo kit on the car before so I can't wait to see the differences.
Good video, I think you should reshoot a longer more in-depth version of this. With more examples of what you are talking about and getting a little more deeper into each topic for the guys that are really interested in this. I know they would appreciate it.
minameise I'm planning on doing something pretty similar to that soon, it's going to be a series on how to boost your Miata as cheap as possible while staying reliable... or something like that. I'm actually going to turbocharge another Miata for the series, does that sound like something you'd be interested in?
TheCarPassionChannel Absolutely, although when I saw all the extra labor and modification involved it was a bit discouraging due to lack of time for a project like that. And, whether or not I would want to make such extensive changes for sure, but it is nice to know that it can be done should one desire.
I've got a lot of research to do I'm waiting on my compensation from a car accident, I won't have all the money for the full build, probably, just the car, megasquirt, afr dial, and a few other pieces maybe just the clutch. I'm considering forging the engine but like I said research is involved I want to aim for 300bhp at the wheels but not push the engine limits and with a 1.8 mx5 I shouldn't have to change out the back end or gearbox, thanks for your videos
300whp will destroy a stock engine and 5-speed gearbox in short order. Yes people have done it, but on average you be bending rods before 300. 220-230whp is a pretty safe number on the stock running gear, as long as you have a 1.8L differential.
nice! for sure gonna stay tuned for that i messed up though i recently changed my clutch but i put an exxedy OE replacement clutch but i did upgrade to a 10 pound racing flywheel i only plan to boost 6 pounds hoping ill be ok but as far as tuning my city has nobody that tunes miatas TheCarPassionChannel
Lucious Arrington Yeah that OE Exedy probably won't be able to take much more than 6psi anyways haha. Once you learn MS you'll be able to give yourself a nice strong street tune. I gave mine a rough tune at 10psi and it was fine, only made 174whp and ran real rich up on top, at that point I was still very new to MS. With your clutch you won't really be able to maximize your power on a dyno anyways. Are you planning on using an intercooler?
Lucious Arrington You'll be able to get 130whp no problem, I'd just keep turning the boost up until the clutch slips then back it down a couple psi. It would be a really good idea to port the wastegate if you only want to run 6psi though, especially if you have a free flowing exhaust. My buddy has a TD0514G (small) on his 1.6L with a 6psi wastegate actuator and it creeps all the way to 12psi by 7000RPM because the wastegate just can't flow enough to keep the boost that low.
I just want to leave this here for people who are trying to do this on a budget: You do not need a megasquirt ecu to run a turbo in your miata. while it is recommended, you can simply purchase an FMU (fuel management unit) and have it know how much fuel to put in!
+Azrofox Yeah I have an entire video series on boosting a Miata on the stock ECU. But on the flip side, there's no way I would trust it for the kind of power this car makes now. MS just has so many safety features that are important when you're pushing the limits of the stock engine. (It's had several upgrades since this video).
Azrofox I have a whole video series dedicated to budget-boosting a Miata on stock ECU & injectors. Long story short: yes. It's better to piece a kit together rather than buying any "kit" off of ebay though.
My friend; you have just achieved hero status. I can't be the only one with a blown miata but doesn't know how it works. My worry gauge (afr) has ADD!! At cruise/4,000 I get a steady 14.7 +/- 3 and on boost about mid-11's but it flicks all over the place. Should it be? My high idle (RX8 injectors) is about 1500rpm and the worry gauge will read about 12 - 12.4. It smells waaay rich. What sort of ballpark figures should I be getting for idle, boost and cruise? Many thanks for the vids so far. Subscribed and watching with interest...

Bring it to Australia and race Marty's Miata. The Miata Scrimmage.
Excellent information and presentation. Thanks for sharing!
Please do a video on tuning and setting up the megasquirt!! That is the part that i am still confused about and need help understanding before i start my build. Otherwise awesome video man, super helpfull
Sam McCown Stay tuned my friend, the Megasquirt series will be starting... very soon.
Awesome man! Thanks
That's San Diego! Just recognized it. :) I'm a Brit btw!
An MS video would be awesome!
dane5331 What kind of things would you like me to address in the MS video? I'm kinda taking suggestions from everybody, I will probably release it in the next 2-3 weeks.
TheCarPassionChannel I have never heard of it, but I know what it does from what you said in the video. maybe that helps lol.
Tick tick tick tick tick
Lifters
Marvel mystery oil cleans that up
2:34 best advice ever! 7:11 is also pretty damn good advice.
thank you this helped a lot but yes megasquirt install!!
please please do a megasquirt video. That will help many of us sooo much!
***** What kind of things would you like me to address in the MS video? I'm kinda taking suggestions from everybody, I will probably release it in the next 2-3 weeks.
Great video man. Caught the Miata bug lol👍👍🤪
@7:10 it's a forewarning +RicerMiata ignored with the Miata he gave Wil lmaoo
The mega-squirt video would be great, if you could talk about the different mega-squirt systems that would be even better like pnp, ms1&2 as well as the diy ms systems. I myself am looking into a diy ms!
dailydriver55 I won't be able to say too much about the DIY as I've never built one. But if you're good at precision soldering, and good at following directions, then you can save a lot of money with a DIY!
this was brilliant. thanks for uploading this!
I need a video for the NC Miata! I'm looking at getting a NC 2.0 Sport (LSD, Bilstein shocks etc..) but want to find a cheap way to make around 276bhp (the gentlemans agreement).
Next level weeb lore, sick
Please do a megasquirt video! That would be amazing help
another informative video. thanks for your efforts
my freind we are two of a kind! thank you
You have some great videos. Keep up the great work. I'm in the process of piecing together a T25 oddball setup for my 1.8. It is one of the T25's from a 300zx...which you probably already know have the unique non standard exhaust housing flange. I already had one laser cut so I can make a downpipe and run an OEM nissan gasket on it.
gasper44 that's the turbo I'm using
Nice man!! Great production!
Can you show me how you deleted the air valve? I need that block off plate and want to take care of it on the ecu as well
Nice video. No shouting or over emotional bollocks like a lot. (including the very next one about turboing an MX5 with some annoying loud shouty man!)
good point: Garret or "risk the ebay unit".
This is a thoughtful and common-sense clip! Congratulations on giving good advice.
The NA6 1.6 is the same 1.6 from the AWD turbo Mazda 323 gtx. So yes. The 1.6 /was/ designed for a turbo. That's why there's a bung on the other side that's not used.
+Taylor Trascher The block is the same, the internals are not. But that is the reason for the oil feed port.
Very good post. very helpful information. thank you for posting
Really fine video. Thank you for making it!!
very good explanation for everything you need to do to a miata great job for beginners thumbs up
Bro
You're so helpful. Thank you so much
Great vid! What's the flow rate on the rx8 injectors?
Idk bro
God damnit that windshield sticker is SICK
Ahaha thank you. I loved it.
New to Miata. 2007 miata is quick, but I want fast
Great video keep them coming .
Lots of wisdom there. Thanks!
awesome video!
Installing the GT2554R FM kit this weekend with 3in exhaust. It will be a little overkill but It should be a ton of fun.
Dude. You are the man.
Vicious stomping of the Mustang.
A video going through the whole process in a lot of detail would be good, you know re turbo your miata haha, good video though!!
The first 40 seconds of this video is the best! Lmao
i rly thought i was gonna have to just hook up a couple air flow pipes 💀 ty bro
What a legend, replying after all these years
Good video, I think you should reshoot a longer more in-depth version of this.
And, whether or not I would want to make such extensive changes for sure, but it is nice to know that it can be done should one desire.
minameise It is a bit time consuming to do the conversion yourself. Not only converting to turbo, but also plenty of troubleshooting afterwards.
Awesome! Please do that Msq setup video
please do a how to setup mega squirt i plan on getting one soon as well as rx8 injectors before i even think about tubro
Lucious Arrington Exactly the same thing I did. Definitely going to be doing an MS install video due to popular demand!
nice! for sure gonna stay tuned for that i messed up though i recently changed my clutch but i put an exxedy OE replacement clutch but i did upgrade to a 10 pound racing flywheel i only plan to boost 6 pounds hoping ill be ok but as far as tuning my city has nobody that tunes miatas TheCarPassionChannel
Are you planning on using an intercooler?
yeah thats why i plan on 6 lol hoping to at least see 130 to the wheels i dont need much i plan on going with an intercooler yeah TheCarPassionChannel
I just want to leave this here for people who are trying to do this on a budget:
You do not need a megasquirt ecu to run a turbo in your miata. while it is recommended, you can simply purchase an FMU (fuel management unit) and have it know how much fuel to put in!
You think with an ebay turbo kit an FMU would do the trick? I eventually plan on a ms
Azrofox I have a whole video series dedicated to budget-boosting a Miata on stock ECU & injectors. Long story short: yes. It's better to piece a kit together rather than buying any "kit" off of ebay though.
Yeah I watched the whole thing and plan on rewatching it when I actually have car parts. Thank you for taking the time to do this
My friend; you have just achieved hero status.
