John Lennon once said that this was the best song ever written.
YEP, and it acrually based a little bi on harmonies of Johann Sebastian Bach. This is surely one of the best rock songs ever wrote and this is Hammond organ. First time I heard it, I was 11 years old.
Ditto, loved the first version, heard this one and jeez!
@@clannad99germany70 yes Bach's 'Air' (on a G string) It's a beautiful interpretation of this masterpiece. Copyright wasn't really a thing back then, and a good thing too!
I think America might have the shortest amount of years before music is considered to be in the public domain.
Anecdote: The melody of Eric Carmen's 'All By Myself' was based on a Rachmaninoff piece. Public domain for American music.
In Europe, no. Mr Carmen quickly heard from the Rachmaninoff family/estate. A settlement was reached.
I'm 63 and have listened to this song all my life. It never gets old. I shed a tear when I heard Gary had passed this year. A true artist. RIP you wonderful soul.
i'm 58, same. this is one of the best ever.
So sorry to hear, didn't know that...
the same for me 60 !
Ditto's on the (your) age and the rest👍 me too 😀...old man using emojis 😑

I heard that song, when I was eight years old, and it stopped me in my tracks. I'm an old woman now and it still takes my breath away. One of the finest songs ever written.
Absolutely breathtaking. Never gets old.
Without a doubt one of the most touching songs ever.
My childhood crush used to play this on his organ for me. It's beautiful. I'm 64
I was a smartass 19 yo and saw them live in Buffalo, NY, I cried at this song like everyone else in the audience
Same
to me, this is best version ever with the orchestra.
Agree. The piano, organ, orchestra, chorus, and soloist, Gary Brooker (rip).
I'm an old man and I've lost a lot of steps along the way , so how is it possible that this man sounds 10,000 times better than when he was young ? 😢
I agree with you, then I can still hear my grandma whispering in my ear…..
WE AGE LIKE FINE WINE ….
This has to be what music in Heaven sounds like!
I agree....
If there is a heaven this song for sure. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Scott Joplin, Muddy Waters, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd will be there. All music that evokes all good human traits and emotions will be there.
No shame for crying for a masterpiece.
Amén…I’m still crying…
Everytime I hear it. I attribute it to the orchestra, I mean when have u ever heard someone play the oboe ??
The choir, and of course Gary Brooker’s marvelous voice.
The Hammond organ!!! We had one and my dad would play it while singing to us…. Brings back great memories, and it does make me shed a tear or two ……
It's ok bro.....I cry every time I hear this song also
Makes me now… I was in jr. high & im now 70… still makes me cry… this is a magical song… 😅😅😅❤❤❤
You can't think of "Whiter Shade" without hearing the Hammond organ. And you can't think about the Hammond organ without hearing "Whiter Shade". The two are eternally linked together. There can't be one without the other.
Harry, I'm 71 and if you want to know what the 60's were like, this song makes you feel the magic and the purity of that time, revealing it through your heart and soul! You said like it transported you back in time, exactly! The essence is of this song is pure, true and authentic by raising feelings of nostalgia and longing for a spiritual awareness even if it was before your time here on earth.
Very well said👏👏👏
110% agree...! In the same catagory is "Fleetwood Mac" with "Need Your Love So Bad"...... Please Harri, give it a try.......
I am also now 71 and count my blessings every day that this was the music of my youth
I am now 76 and was in college when this song came out. Much like artmanjohn and Linda, I love the music we had when we were young. There is another reaction video of this by a young black man from LA who wept when he talked about the difference between a song like this and the music his younger siblings listen to now. This concert version was almost an out-of-body experience for him.
I was enthralled by it in 1967 and this 2006 version is even more thrilling to hear and see. I have been to a few Procul Harum concerts over the years and they are a great band to see live. I loved Harri's reaction. The song deserves our attention and respect.
@@johncurran6031 Well said!
His voice is just as good as the original. Back in 1972 this song we chose in our wedding to walk down 'aisle' in gorgeous garden wedding in an auntie's house in Rose Park, Adelaide, Australia. Special song for me and enhanced with orchestral background. Think it is the organ that gives this song life and meaning.
I'm 71 years old and been listening to this song since it first came out and this is the best version I've heard. The song was just screaming for an orchestra.
Kind of like church, isn't it!
Cry on brother.... I'm 67 and have listened to this song at least 1000 times since 1967. Gary Brooker's voice only got better over forty years. How anyone cannot consider this a "Top 10" of all time live performances is beyond me (and I'm including Queen at Live Aid)
Right on. He is older but his voice hits harder. Too many times older they get the voice fades. Does not change how great to see anyone who played some of our favorite toons. Gary Brooker must be timeless.
A Timeless Classic ❤
I'm nearing that and i still shed tears of joy and thanks for this song and for music.
I am not worthy, either, in the face of such artistic majesty. But this song redeems me every time!
Top ten, hell, top 5!❤❤❤❤❤
I'm 75 and remember when it first came out! Very emotional I love it!
We skipped the light fandango...
I’m 66 my dads 89 and we both cry together listening to this masterpiece ❤
We are all on this rock together. Doesn't matter what side of an imaginary border you live on, we all can enjoy great music.
In my lifetime one of the most majestic performances I have ever heard.😂❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice to see our music last and be appreciated by younger listeners.
A true masterpiece enhanced by the Orchestra..one of the best songs ever made!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I'm 60 and I still wonder why. There were so many deep songs that came out during this time what a treasure!!!!
I'm 67 years old and have loved this song since it was first released. I was lucky enough to see them live a number of times over the decades. The last time was unexpected. My girlfriend of the time worked for a corporation with front row seats at a somewhat close venue. She told me she had tickets to see Jethro Tull for the next weekend. I didn't ask who would open for them and only found out once at the venue and halfway to our seats when I heard a couple telling their son who looked about 12 years old how he would love Procol Harum. As much as I love Tull I was more than twice as excited to have the chance to see Procol Harum again. That was in 1993 and Gary Brooker still sounded as good as he did when the song was first released, and still sounded fantastic in 2006. He was an incredibly talented man.
In 1967, the first time I heard this, a week after my mother passed, I was
14 yrs old. I knew it would be in my heart and my soul til I was very, very
old. At least one time in my life I was right. Thanks Harri. ❤️🔥
I'm glad I'm not the only one that's reduced to tears by this. Gary Brooker's voice is incredible.
Jesus Brooker's vocals
are absolutely stunning. You got it right, Harri, his voice is like it's in a time capsule. So transplendent.
Wow, you had me in tears. Such a beautiful song, I'm 60 years old. Love my classic songs, even today. Growing up listening these master pieces is a privilege. My kids are adults now, and my grandkids are young adults. My family enjoys listening to these classic also. I have the biggest smile right now. Thank you for taking down memory lane. God bless you sir.
@RicoBurghFan - What a wonderful word, "transplendent"! It may not be an officially recognized word but it should be!
I'm 65 and grew up with bands like this but this song is special. Love your reaction and grateful that you let it play.
Nothing but gratitude and sheer joy for that song and his Voice since I was 20 yrs and living in London...now 78 and still listening. Love your total immersion in this performance...special!
That organ line goes right into your soul. Even for me as a little kid in 1967.
That Hammond organ hits me so hard. I grew up in the 80s and this song has always had a special place in my heart. And Gary's voice aged so well.
Summer of love,I was 13.
My God I miss those wonderful carefree days.
Same here!
MATTHEW FISHER a eu le génie d'écrire à l'orgue Hammond , ce passage , cette intro incroyable .....
Aaaaaahhhh Bach !!!...
Tears, I'm 56 years old, die hard Beatles fan, this may be the best , loss for words
This version is just sublime and I won't lie gave me a lump in my throat .
The intro I think is more or less the Bach piece that whiter shade of pale is based on and when Gary's piano comes in it just sent chills down my spine .The choir towards the end really lifts the song ,I've been watching this video for years and I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves because it's an incredible rendition of an already all time great song
I agree with all that; Gary was into classical music and wrote this as he was inspired by Bachs' Air on the G String. (look up an interview he did that's here on youtube where he explains it). For a young lad at that time, that was a unique place to come from and bestow (and probably birth) progressive rock on that generation of music lovers. Then the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, the Beatles and the Beach Boys followed suit. They all kind of inspired each other. But Gary did take that nice simple, descending progression and made a modern masterpiece with it. Man did he ever...
RIP Gary Brooker. Thank you for blessing us with this amazing performance. There is just something so special about this song, it emotionally touches so many people and tears start to flow. It's beyond words.
RIP, Gary Brooker, you co-wrote a timeless masterpiece. “A Whiter Shade of Pale" has been named Britain's most-played song in public places in the past 75 years!
Actually for the past 300 years since J.S.Bach wrote "Air on the G string" from which this music was stolen from they just changed few notes and add some lyrics. Procol Harum are businessmen not musicians.
Not to many times when a song is perfection. This is one of those times. It's absolutely beautiful and perfection.
I will never tire of this absolutely great, beautiful song. Never!
Witnessing that performance is the blessing of a lifetime.
brings tears to my eyes every damn time. one of the best songs and performances ever
ME TOO I always weep everytime I hear this song ever since 1967, the organ just makes it for me.
me too. I know the sing but couldn't tell you who they were, but listening to this version brings me to tears and I'm 61
Same here
E v e r y T i m e 😭
Every single time.
It's achingly beautiful.
This is such an overwhelming performance. Stunning, too much to handle. Bravo!! RIP Gary.
The world weeps for the passing of the great Gary Brooker. He without a doubt was one of the foundation stones of rock & roll. Rest in peace.
This song always brings me to tears. But the end of the song when the horns come in is so celebratory as though this is what it is going to feel like when my soul returns to God and Jesus. On earth, people may cry at my passing but in heaven they will be rejoicing my arrival.
One thing I really appreciate about Harri , is his genuine love of music. When Harri almost choked up, I almost choked up too. 😥 Been listening to Whiter Shade of Pale for years and the lead singer made this version on par with the original recording. Raw and True talent.
Yes I love that about Harri also. Gary Brooker is the singer and maybe if you get a chance check him out in the CONCERT FOR GEORGE documentary, the show put on a year after George Harrison died. Gary sings George’s song OLD BROWN SHOE masterfully!
I feel this version is much better than the original in every way.
His voice mellowed like fine wine listen to him when I was a teenager Procol Haarlem
I love to watch old bands nail it decades later.
FScott Gray That's why they have lasted. They can still nail it. I'm with you.
Singing in the same key, decades later. Not many artists can do that.
@@shella5963 He sounds even better in this version, over 50 years later.
RIP Gary. We miss you so badly. You never lost your voice ever. God Bless and RIP.
“…her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale”. I mean, seriously, come on! EASILY one of the best lines ever written. And this performance…is arguably one of the best live performances of any song, ever. I’ll even go so far as to say it’s epic!
No argument here!
BACH would be impressed for sure
They are not "rock stars", they are true musicians. Splendid rendition. Gary Brooker is the master. He can sing to me anytime.
Exactly 😁
One of the most beautiful performances you’ll ever see!!
The voice,that organ,those drums,that orchestra,that choir....Tears of joy are the correct response❣👊
Absolutely incredible. The entire band has aged like fine wine, getting even better with time.
Gary Brooker is the only original band member. The other band members here were either born AFTER the group was formed in 1967 or were just children.
@@miks48 I hadn't even considered that. My bad. They still sounded amazing however, and the orchestra and choir certainly helped.
@@DavidBrianPaley My initial reaction was the same as yours until I've found out that none of the original members, except for Brooker, were still active in 2006. Matthew Fisher, who played the Hammond organ on the 1967 "A Whiter Shade of Pale", left the band in 2004, two years before this performance.
@@miks48 I should have thought about the time difference but it just sounded so good I guess it simply got by me. Thanks again for the heads up. I guess Brooker is another performer I'll now have to remember for longevity beside Springsteen who just released a new album in his 70's (and still sounds great).
@@DavidBrianPaley Can't believe young Bruce is in his 70s. Time flies.
This is too emotional. He's blessed with an amazing voice. These are the kinds of music I grew up on. Unbelievable!!!!
Possibly the best song ever written. John Lennon was listening to it over and over in his rolls in 67.
Let those tears flow, my man! The pristine beauty of this arrangement pulls them right out of your eyeballs!
Gary Brooker - a true musical genius. Note the way he looks to the orchestra before he starts to sing.
and before he finishes
Absolute masterpiece of a song and such a heart felt performance. Gary's voice just keeps getting better with age
We should all be enjoying music together all the time - regardless of age, race, religion, or anything else…
Peace Everywhere! Free Palestine!
No more Wars!
This is even better than the original.
Hearing that vocal chorus when it starts to swell in the background grabs me every time! The original recording has been a favorite of mine since it first came out...but this...THIS...is extraordinary! Gary's vocals, the band, the orchestra, the chorus...and of course, that iconic Hammond organ! So delighted the performance was taped so we can watch, listen and experience this masterpiece over and over! Thank you Harri, for acting on your subscriber's request!👍👍👍
My hair stands up everytime ( the vestal virgin part especially).
You can actually buy the whole concert on DVD.
I was a teen there in England when this came out and it affected everyone of my generation. It was before the Beatles really took off too. Yes. We all felt it was ecstatic and I never knew what the words were then, but it did not matter. We sat on a cliff one night at midnight and this was playing from a party behind us, and I have never forgotten how that felt. It took us all to some heights of emotion that we had never felt before. Yes WE CRIED too... and I still feel that now 50+ years later.
A sweet recollection...thank you for sharing it. Cheers, from the USA.
Your post is great. I know what you mean.
I'm sorry to be so picky: This masterpiece of a song was released in 1967. A bit after the Beatles soared to fame.
To make this less of an eye rolling note: John Lennon called this song, the best song ever written.
I don't have the words to describe how absolutely brilliant and gorgeous this song is. Fucking marvelous mwah
Man, thats just the right emotion for this absolute masterpiece
This is truly one of the greatest songs ever written, it transforms time and genre without loosing anything in translation. I am amazed every time I hear it.
I agree, Roberta Kline. Do you know what this song is truly about? What the lyrics are trying to convey? So many people (including me) are not sure what this song is truly about. I have heard so many opinions/comments from so many people, but I wish so much that we would hear Gary Brooker (himself) tell us what this song is truly about before he ascends into Heaven.
If one is not enthralled by this incredible performance, they are not alive. It's absolutely PRISTINE and SENSATIONAL!!!
@@MinnieGinny I have no idea what he meant when they wrote the song, I only know it feels like something lost or something hidden revealed.
@@MinnieGinny The lyrics were actually written by Keith Reid (the bands lyricist).
As he describes, “ I was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story. With the ceiling flying away and room humming harder, I wanted to paint an image of a scene. I wasn’t trying to be mysterious with those images, I was trying to be evocative. I suppose it seems like a decadent scene I’m describing. But I was too young to have experienced any decadence, then. I might have been smoking when I conceived it, but not when I wrote. It was influenced by books, not drugs.”
Perfectly stated
The Miller's Tale is Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. But I never fully understood most of the lyrics, and almost never wanted to, especially once the organ sweeps in and carries you away.
I think Gary Brooker's voice sounds better at 60.
I watched a video of him in Germany when he was I believe 72, and he was still great.
Clean living!
At age 82, Whiter Shade of Pale came into my life and will aways be my most favorite piece of music. It takes me away!!!!
This song wont let you forget it even years later.it stays with you and all those memories throughout those wonderful years
I heard Procol Harum and Gary Brooker perform live in 1973. This performance is even better than their performance back then. Such a rich voice and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra was simply perfect. I love your reactions. It is so wonderful to see music stir your soul like it does. I'm also a huge Beatles fan (Saw The Beatles live in 1966) and I enjoy your Beatles reactions too. Rock on Brother Harri. Peace ✌
I watch this at least once a week because my soul needs something this beautiful.
Good to know I am not the only one to do that. I'm 73 and about to turn 74 in Nov. I shall always miss the REAL MUSIC of my youth

@@joycemgrimes7657 This is definitely music that nourishes the soul. Beautiful.
I'm 66 and have loved this song as long as I can remember..it's not just the lyrics or the music it's the whole experience..you've helped me describe how I've always felt..the saddness, the beauty and the place it takes you..as you were saying that I was thinking...yes! that's exactly how I feel. I've always loved the original but this one is so beautiful..enhanced.
I'm glad Gary was able to record this version. This is a gift to the universe.
Procol Harum was one of the most iconic bands from the late 60s and 70s and I should know I was there it was a great time to be alive
I was a teen in the sixties. This was the first song I'd play with when I ran upon a jutebox. Indeed it was a magical Era.
The older I get, the more I love this song!💜💜💜
Also fighting the tears every time I hear it. The same when I hear God only knows.
Frederick Nietzsche "Without music, life would be a mistake"
Truly is the most beautiful song live, ever!
In a way, this is a love song. It encapsulates the pain and the pleasure of love. And it shows a window on love's purity. Emotional to hear, almost too emotional. The years don't matter, it's immortal. Thank you, Procol Harum!
I am 67 Harry and I cannot tell you where this song takes me emotionally. What I do know is that the 60s were the most beautiful times, especially for me, living in London when it was the most wonderful place to live.
I've always liked this song. But this version is beautiful! The addition of the orchestra and choir just take it to a whole new level! Sent chills thru me. Awesome reaction!
Magic. It has to be magic because it’s the only explanation that fits.
No Magic, just one of GOD's creations.
So many years later and his voice is better than ever. RIP sir!
Undoubtedly one of the best songs of the past CENTURY!!! Pure 60's emotion . . . It captures the unique time and space of a newfound consciousness . . . 🙏🏻
I love the way they add one layer after another. Best arrangement of this song ever.
Chills still after hearing this song for 55 years.
I have trouble producing tears, and this version almost always brings me to cry. This is probably the greatest live performance in history. I'd give anything to have been there. Rumor has it he was battling cancer the first time when he did this.
This is one of those songs which will never age, never be old. Gary was an amazing vocalist and artist, he will be missed but left this beautiful work of art.
Harri this song is timeless. It was my older brothers and sister-in-laws song, We played it at his funeral, I miss him so much. What a comfort to hear this version. RIP GARY
It was an iconic song before this. THIS IS A TRUE MASTERPIECE!! I would never have thought it possible to improve this song and we get this. Gary Booker's voice sounds even better 40 years later. When I discovered this video about a year ago I was shell shocked. Got to see Gary Booker with Ringo Starr and his All Star Band along with Peter Frampton in Fort Lauderdale, Florida around 20 years ago and Gary played this song on the organ. Wonderful memory. Wish I could have been at this concert in Denmark. Beautiful.
In 1972, Procol Harum recorded the first album of a rock band with a symphony orchestra in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In '92 I was working in a Mexican restaurant in Edmonton and it was my first night closing the kitchen alone. I was waiting for midnight when I could close up, and I heard 'Conquistador' coming from the bar area. I had never heard a bar band cover this song and had to see who it was, so I poked my head from the kitchen and there was a bunch of people on stage in tuxedos, some with jeans from the waist down and tails above. It was the twentieth anniversary of the original concert and they were back in town for a repeat performance and came to my bar afterwards to party. It was an amazing night.
This song is the Pachelbel Canon by J.S. Bach from the 1680s, and it still rings true today ...
I know that I was not the only one waiting for the organ to kick in. That was just heavenly. Absolutely magnificent.
I grew up surrounded by music but never mastered an instrument. I’m always amazed that so many people can come together with their instruments and make something that sounds so damn beautiful. Music is life.
Although Procol Harem never had the success with singles after this and Conquistador, their 70's Albums are REALLY worth checking out!! The songs on them are unique & phenomenal just like "Whiter Shade of Pale" is!!
I was 7 years old when I heard this song. One of my older brothers was playing it.
I cried as a child and this version moves me to tears every single time I listen to/ watch it.
His passing saddened me deeply.
This is absolutely the most beautiful live performance of all time.
I once saw Paul Mccartney say that this was the most beautiful song he knew.
A rock song of the 60's, now played by an orchestra, how fitting it seems. A song from when I was 21, and just a fine a piece of music as it was then. The past is the present when you listen to 'your' music from 'your' time. Great music such as this, brings on great emotion. Your a fortunate person if it does.
I had the same reaction Harry! I was in Air Force Tech School in 67 when this first came out and thought it was a haunting song. But then I heard this 2006 version and was just blown away! The singer just died the last year or so. I think his name was Gary Brooker. What a fitting piece of music to be remembered by!! PEACE....
I was born April 1954. I grew up with the Greatest Music In History. “The Beatles” Changed everything forever. The 60s set the table for the 70s and the early 80s and we all thrived on the best bands ever making incredible music, before it all started to go Digital with forms of noise I refuse to call music.
In the past when I heard a song on the radio I couldn’t wait to hear it again ASAP….. Today when I listen to the top 40 stations I usually think… I never want to hear that crap ever again. Things have changed a lot since the 60s.
Yep…..I had tears streaming from the time Gary began singing! It was #5 for several weeks in 1967…..& was an anthem for that “Summer of Love”.
Just fabulous….!!!
A new masterpiece of an old masterpiece
This entire song is based on a tune by J.S. Bach called "Air on a G String" (of a violin) from his Suite #3 in D, written in 1723. Both versions are truly incredible!
Your reaction is perfect! This presentation of this song is eternally grand.
RIP Gary Brooker (1945-2022)
One of the best songs of all time. You're right, my generation was truly lucky.
I’m almost 68 now and wouldn’t swap my time on earth for any other in history.
The music,the vibe,the community spirit.
Oh yes,we were spoiled alright.
Me too.
If I could give you 5 thumbs up, I would. In my 53 years on earth I have listened to the original version hundreds, maybe more than a thousand times. I finally found this version about 4 months ago now and I literally let it flow through my soul at least 2 or more times per day. This was more brothers favorite song and I mist up every time I hear this and realize just how fitting it would have been for his wake.
You are so right about his voice, except that I instantly noticed that it is aged like a beautiful whiskey. In the original version I heard and felt the bravado and dreams of youth to change the world. In this version the voice is damn near the same except I immediately noticed that there was 40+ years of living in the world taking some of that bravado away. Every time I listen to it, I tear up and yet I cannot stop smiling. I feel as though Gary is reaching into my deepest corners of my soul and releasing the demons and dragons that I have so carefully locked away; but, at the same time is lifting me out of the fray unfolding before me on the wings of angels...
Very poignantly expressed.
I got emotional and it's not even my era, can only imagine how I'd feel if this was an anthem of my youth. Amazing performance, tragic he's gone.
The choir totally lifts this version through the roof...
