So sad to lose one of the greatest most underrated and talented artists in my opinion . And this.......this version is my all-time favorite song.....ever. strings are so incredibly rich and layered precisely. The brass, the choir... a perfect blending of music, instruments and people never to be matched again. The talent and the style
and sound will never be seen again. I got carried away here. I didn't mean to ramble on, but this is what this song does to me. It takes me to a simpler time when worries were few and and times were relevant, people were free and life was full. I am sorry, not everyone got to experience this Era now forever gone........

Gary Brooker is the lead singer and those of us who heard this song for the first time in the 60s are astounded by the fact that his voice sounds as great or perhaps even better, seasoned by age and experience than it did more than 50 years ago. Beautiful performance of a wonderful classic, and such a warm and enthusiastic reaction! Thanks, RR!

Well said, I have listened to the '67 original thousands of times in my 53 years on this little dusty ball. The original and this song are two completely different versions. The original is full of youthful hopes, dreams and vigor... This version is a reflection of all of those hopes and dreams 45+ years later, Gary's voice echoing a long life of dreams realized and dreams crushed... I listen to both versions as a daily affirmation...

@@Vinterfrid It's a tenor range that has a raspy or gutteral sound to voice without the purity, but still hitting the notes with another quality. There are a lot of rock voices that are 'whiskey tenors'. Not just male, but female singers. I was in a dark place when the pandemic hit, and started binge watching some acrylic pouring videos on UA-cam. I now have a studio, and am actually selling some of my pieces...if nothing sells, oh well. I have given my self permission to just be. I live with chronic pain, and this medium along with some great music when I paint totally helps me forget not just the physical pain, but the emotional nagging pain that could wear me down if I let it. If nothing else, may I suggest you watch Sara Taylor do a painting or two...

I heard a story once, a long time ago. They wrote lots of songs & of course when you write songs there are some lines that are rejected because you've come up with a better line. The rejected lines were put in a bottom draw. They were making an album & needed one last song but, were composed out. They grabbed a hand full of rejected lines from the draw & shuffled them together then put them down. What resulted was one of the most beautiful songs ever. I don't know if the story is true, but they sure produce one great song.

It is so touching to share this experience with a young woman generations apart from me Now let's do "A Salty Dog" from this same concert. I don't care if any of you geezers think I'm a pansy, or a puffier, I will cry when I hear these beloved old tunes. Passion is not weakness. A Whiter Shade of Pale is THE iconic song from the sixties for me. Gary Brooker's big boot in the foreground of the original video. Then, when I discovered the Denmark concert where the song was treated like a sacred piece. Well, that's when I knew that A Whiter Shade of Pale was a classical piece of music. RIP Gary Brooker. You were one of a kind.

It's so enjoyable to watch someone young appreciate the music of my youth. 1967. I had just finished my first graduate degree and started my professional life. This song was one of many of the time that left us speechless.
The beginning of rock and roll and its early years was a magical time.

Did he really? I saw a documentary about Lennon's portable juke box. I would really love to know about this as Lennon's "Strawberry Fields" and Brooker's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" are at the top of my "Desert Island Disks" list. A "Rolls" provides a smooth ride but smooth enough for a turntable? Wow!

Basically the tune of this piece was written by Johann Sebastian Bach in the early 1700’s, and rearranged in the 1800’s so that it could be played by a single violin on the G string, hence the name “Air on a G String”. Fantastic that this music still has such appeal!

Over 70 microphones were used with every member of the choir having their own mike and every instrument being close miked. This was highly unusual---orchestras and choirs would normally have a few overhead mikes. It was recorded on 100 channels of sound. At one of the rehearsals the bass player asked if he could hear more cello in his monitor and the engineer said "sure, which one?" Attention to detail was unbelievable. Was it worth it? You bet it was.
