  • In this video I describe three different categories of underwater cameras that I classify as ideal for scuba divers. All the camera types described take both still photos and capture video but are unique in their abilities and their operation. I try to explain the pros and cons of each underwater camera type and where they are most practical. My hope is the viewer will be able to use this underwater camera insight to help decide what camera system might serve their individual needs best.
    Here is the reef guide book I published using the camera discussed. Check it out if you would like to see all the imagery featured.
    North Florida Reefs = amzn.to/2Cum8uw
    Action Cameras:
    GoPro = amzn.to/2oCj5eT
    -Underwater Housing = amzn.to/2FQ5WpU
    Garmin Action Cam = amzn.to/2oEnNsy
    "Point and Shoot" camera:
    Canon = amzn.to/2F9RMib
    -Waterproof Case = amzn.to/2GZzOj0
    DSLR "Bad To The Bone" Camera beast:
    Canon Camera= amzn.to/2FNY2NN
    The underwater camera systems described in detail include action cameras(GoPro featured), what I am calling "Point and Shoot" type cameras, and full frame DSLR cameras. The latter two camera types require separate underwater camera housings. Each camera system has the ability to capture high quality underwater photos and underwater video. Viewers will have to decide what is the best underwater camera for their own intentions, budgets, and usage expectations.

    Thanks Joe. I still have a question about the point and shoot. Would a larger sensor 3/4 instead of one inch be better then a higher aperture: say 1.4 instead of 2.8?

    • @UWPICVID
      @UWPICVID  4 роки тому

      Not sure I understand your underwater camera setting question completely. I believe you might be asking about a situation where one camera may have a larger image sensor but higher minimum aperture value where another camera may have a smaller sensor but a smaller minimum aperture value. In this case the first camera theoretically should do better in less light because of larger image sensor however the fixed lens aperture allows less light in. The second camera's lens should allow more light on the smaller sensor. So it might be that each camera could produce similar results. I tend to weigh more on the larger sensor but it is hard to say without comparing the different cameras directly.

    Some great points to consider there! I will be in the market for a point and shoot camera shortly. What camera and housing would you recommend. Will be using it for 0 - 35mtr dives mainly. Budget for both camera and housing would be about £800 gbp. Thank you 👍🏻

    Can you talk about how to use stropes with a canon gx7 mark ll in a fantasea housing. I havent been able tonfogure out what setting to use in maial mode so my pictures arent washed out.

    • @UWPICVID
      @UWPICVID  4 роки тому

      Using strobes while taking underwater pictures can be tricky but also can produce some awesome results when dialed in right. Each situation is different but I would recommend only using strobes on close-up photographs. At the beginning of each dive you can take test images of a rock or whatever at an approximate distance you will be taking pictures at during the dive. I would set your shutter speed fairly fast, maybe like 200 or so or as fast as you can while still getting good exposure with strobes. Sounds like you can increase your shutter speed a bit if your photos are washed out now. I would keep aperture a bit higher as well to help keep more things in focus. Once shutter speed and aperture are set leave those locked and experiment with the strobe output. Once you have a decent looking test image you are probably good to go.. This may require some tweaking based on your subjects. If they are bright or dark color you may want to make some fine tune adjustments. Best of luck and dive safe.

    Thanks Joe, you never mention red filter do you just color correct in post and is that better that using a red filter

    • @UWPICVID
      @UWPICVID  6 років тому +3

      I do not like using filters because they limit even more light that enters the camera in an already light limited underwater environment. This makes a obvious difference in small image sensor cameras like a GoPro. Less light due to a filter may result in a grainy image. Check out my GoPro settings video and/or GoPro color correction videos for more insight. Thanks!

      UWPICVID yeah i watched all your videos they are amazing i learned a lot... thank you so much.. i was just confused and wanted to make sure i that no rf is required if i’ve got post experience and tools :) no one address this fact clearly as opposed to normal photography tutorials where many gurus will say do not use polarizing filter for example... thanks again and looking forward to watching more videos:)

      @UWPICVID  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching the vids and the kind words. Regarding use of filters underwater it is matter of preference, type of camera, and abilities in camera and post. In some situations with certain cameras i may considering using them but generally do not.

      This is the underwater housing I use for the Canon g7x mark ii and it works great. It is also one of the less expensive options. amzn.to/2DlainV

    If Canon would have an underwater housing for their G5x II, I would have probably purchased that camera. I went for an RX100 V instead though I still need to decide on the underwater housing for that.

    Sony RX100Va with fantasea housing. excellent underwater solution without spending the big bucks of an APSC or full frame camera and housing. If it had a f1.4 lens and if they can make the eye autofocus work on marine life it would be by far the best solution for underwater photography and videography for the money.

      Camera technology improves every day. It is pretty amazing the tools we have available to us as underwater videographers and underwater photographers.
