This is the first review I've ever seen on underwater housing... Sometimes it's nice to be reminded of all the options available to the world of photography. Thanks Tony! It would be really cool to see this in action too as raphael mentioned.
Thank you so much for the continuous tips and advice on photography! Much appreciated! Shout out from St. Lucia!
Great video very informative. I was wondering what your opinion is on the SEALIFE cameras available for purchase, where would you place them in terms of quality when compared to the other items you've mentioned?
Nicely done. Thanks for the video!
Nicely done Tony! I use both an Ikelite and a Sea&Sea housing for my 6D, while the sea and sea housing is black aluminum it has a moisture alarm that lets you know if it is taking water. Someone asked if IS or VR works underwater and the answer to that is YES, specially when using scuba and you cannot help but gain and loose buoyancy as you breathe. I would say that using fins is mandatory when using a DSLR with a housing and strobes.
Really well done review - educational and high quality. Just subscribed - thank you!
i have a 7d and im into surfing and wave photography, what pro housing can i check out for my camera,i notice you missed the wave housing gear.
I have a Sealife DC1200 set and I'm looking for a more modern upgrade. Something more less fussy. What would you guys recommend?
just want to tell you myself...that im in the search and reseach on getting into underwater photography - i have seen a couple of videos, read thisng hear and there, even look for classes around me that others underwater photographers with experience can teach me (all very expensive btw).....but, out of all this things, this video has been the most informative and complete to the point one. so thanks
NathalyCalle Glad I could help!
Great and informative video. I wish I'd have bought a housing for my 50d when they still made them. Deciding on whether to go with the new 7d MkII and save for a housing, or the Olympus mirrorless rig. I really want to upgrade from the 50d anyway. Decisions...decisions...
Nikonos the all time legend, picked up on ebay for a steal.
I use the Underwater housing from Aquatech and they are amazing. I can still use any of my lenses.
Tony, i would like to see a review of this big camera housing compared with the new outex housing.
Cool overview of the dedicated Ikelite system. I want to get one of those for SCUBA Diving!
This go pro camera; would that also work for birds and thus zooming without damaging picture quality like phones do?
I like the ocean and birds so I'm thinking about getting a camera one day that works for both due to its expensiveness
Tony, is there any way you could do an update with new cheap housing (Meikon/Seafrogs) for compact/ sony mirrorless (A6XXX) or surf housings?
I've been scrolling through your videos for hours trying to soak up as much information as I can. Thanks for going into so much detail in everything that you do. I'll definitely be purchasing your book, but after that it's penny pinching time until I can find an Ikelite.
Is fiber optic TTL the same as electrical TTL with regards to performance?
most don't float when you go down deep and air gets compressed....scuba divers don't use their arms to swim...
Lovely video Tony and it is great information about using under water camera s you are an inspiration to the photo world and I love watching your videos amazing how much you put in to everything you put out there thanks a million Tony, Brian Geoghegan Photography Leitrim Ireland
Thanks, and you're welcome!
I always wanted to see a housing review. Loved it!!! Now I know, I DON'T need it that bad....lol
What about a housing for a R5 or the upcoming R5C? I’m looking into beginning with photography and scuba diving and taking pictures instead of hunting.
How does the diopter work on the housing?
Any chance of updating this for 2018
Can Tony please start recording audiobooks?
what with the "dicapac ws10" you forgot to mention it. it's a great "housing" and a cheap one that can fit also to a DSLR
Is it possible for you to do a review of the canon eos t2i and t3i they look very interesting and not to expensive but they don't look to bad. I watched some vids but non are as good as yours tony thanks.
We do cover the T3i in these videos: Canon 70D ULTIMATE Review (vs T3, T3i, T5, SL1, 60D, 7D, 6D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III) and Canon 6D, 5D Mark III, 7D, T3i, 600D, 5D Mark II ULTIMATE Review and Comparison.
Hello, I have a Canon 6D Mark 2 with some lences like tamron 15-30 , and sigma 85 F 1,4, what kind of housing do I need? I apreciate your help and orientation..
I use Nimar for housing with my Nikon, but ikelite is also a great company for housing
how much does the dslr case cost
Hey tony have you heard anything about the new possible 7d mkii?
I follow the rumors, but there's nothing concrete, or even a release date.
You should update this video due to more quality/ affordable options like the sony rx100 series cameras that came out
Dude. You're the best!
Bought 4 camera's last year !
Love your videos Tony, I've learnt a lot. From this video, I have learnt you have never done scuba diving or underwater photography. lol
I've done both
Sorry for that. Normally you review cameras by using them and in this video you didn't discuss cameras just basic stuff that would be common knowledge. As well as other points that people have discussed.
So the "strobes is what I can use underwater for light and flash or just for flash?
Flash and Strobes if you have a synch cords, if you have a TTL cord from Ikelite, then your strobes will be acting like your camera internal flash. I have the TTL cord. Some smaller point and shoot underwater case ( e.g. sealife or sea and sea ) sometimes are designed to use your internal flash for shooting, but in my experience, it is not reliable source of flash.
I haven't underwater fashion shoot coming up in 2 weeks and was thinking about renting the Leica XU from borrowed lenses. am I going to get quality images with that
*have a
how deep?
30 feet and shallower its amazing. I've used it down to 50 feet and the flash is totally insufficient at that depth -- strobes are needed.
Hi Tony, could you and Chelsea perhaps do a remake of this? I really value your actual opinions and other underwater gear revieuwers seem biased or sponsored to me.
That Ikelite housing is not "translucent," it's transparent. The flash diffuser one the point-and-shoot housing shown earlier is translucent.
2:26 "The housing itself [...] traps enough air so it will actually float so that's a big bonus right because if it slips out of your hands it's just gonna go to the surface surface and not to the bottom of the ocean" LOL good point :)
the Ikelite uderwatre case alone is weigh about 15 lbs. if you put 2 DS161 strobes with it, that's another 10 lbs. or more not including if you're using an 8" dome. By 80 feet or more, that's when you start to feel the camera becomes buoyant, but 100% of underwater photographer use a bungee cord or a harness to secure the camera, just In case you let go accidentally.
make a video of you and chelsea making an underwater photoshoot
I find the underwater casing for PnS tend to fog up due to the different in temp. Do you experience it on the dslr casing as well?
Anson Chew Odd, I've never had that happen. My goggles certainly get fogged, though. I suppose you could use the same defogger that you do for scuba goggles.
Thanks for the tip. :)
If you don't have a moisture muncher, assemble your camera inside a well air-conditioned room before you take it to the water. I have the Ikelite DSLR for Nikon, I never use a moisture muncher, but I always assemble my UWC first in my air-conditioned room, or hotel room before you take it to the water for UW photography.
MrWarbeast By the way, never ever use a defogger for scuba mask on your UW case.
Cachoeirinha but another one
i guess this kind of stuff tends to get rented a lot. maybe even privately. a good way to make some money.
I saw a guy using a clear zip-lock bag on his point and shoot! I wonder how the quality came out.
There are some waterproof bags that have optical-quality filters that screw onto the front of your lens. They're a bit clumsy for my tastes.
Tony Northrup I just started using something similar to a ziplock bag made for a DSLR very affordable and results aren't bad at all... still getting used to it but check it out.. (the underwater image was shot with my t3i and kit lens) www.dienossa.com/photography/fashion/
Don't use a zip lock bag it reined my phone
U dont use ure hands wiles diving
I use Nikon primarely but I would never buy the AW1 bcuz it has no video stabilisation built in!
almost all of the video cameras in phones use stabilisation that makes video smooth but not in the AW1 that is soo choppy when u walk and film!!!!!!
3:01
LOL
I bearly listen to him I was in the comment section
Fins not flippers and your not supposed to use your hands to swim when scuba diving it’s 2 inefficient
now
Update required...:-)
Is image stabilization effective underwater?
Good question! I've never thought about it. I guess it would be a good thing, but usually you need to be using a fairly fast shutter speed to freeze motion, anyway.
All depends on shutter speed
FINS!!!!! YOUR NOT A FUCKING MERMAID
I guess Jamie Foxx is your brother from another mother.
You look like Robin Van Persie.
The strobes are expensive because the type of plastic there housing is made out off
No Flash underwater.....Really?
Hi Tony normally I enjoy your video's but, this is one you should not have made due to your lack of knowledge on this topic. You got so many things wrong in this video not just from a photography standpoint but from a diving standpoint as well. I would suggest talking to someone who is experience on this subject like Stephen Frink, Eric Cheng, Paul Nicklen or my self to educate you on underwater photography and the underwater world.
Maybe you should not use words that you don’t know their meaning. Translucent is not the same thing as transparent. Clear plastic is transparent not translucent
i sense old people
Have you ever photographed sharks?
Just cute tiger sharks... That was one of those times when I wish that I had good strobes on my housing; they tend to hide in dark places.
this guy must not be a diver.. flippers? really?
Mc and bc
Piece of shit quality underwater box selling for rocky high pricing. Literally no developing cost and production cost product.
still a good review tho.
Thank you so much for the continuous tips and advice on photography! Much appreciated! Shout out from St. Lucia!
St Lucia! 😍 my favorite island!!!
