@@paultreadaway102 Yes, that is Jeff Porcaro. I believe this was one of his last albums. Edit: Human Touch by Bruce Springsteen is another great album for great and powerful drumming from Jeff during his later years of life.
Calling Elvis is one of the greatest achievements in the history of studio recording. The guitar and drums are so tight they sound like one instrument. Mark finally nailed the guitar sound he was aiming for in some of the tracks on Brothers in Arms. This song exemplifies Mark's reputation as a studio perfectionist, and his guitar playing had never before sounded so precise and polished. Unfortunately the song set a precedent that the rest of the songs on the album were unable to follow. On Every Street contains some nice songs, but none of them can match the musicianship of Calling Elvis.
i always loved the album since its launch, but never "got" this song and its legendary guitar solo at around 2'20 until about last month -- i agree now, masterpiece
All these years later, and this song still grabs me by the shoulders and shakes me like a rag doll. Fucking beautiful. God damn, it's good to be alive!
This was my uncle's favorite song. He was Bassist in a countryband. At his funeral, I played this song with his band, with me on the bass. Its so bad that people you love pass away first.. 😢

1:13 right through to 1:28 -- 2:15 is a glorious solo, but the bass, drums, and the driving rhythm just builds up the song like a prelude to a rocket launch.
I am not really a friend of their big hits. But this one is outstanding. Especially the guitar of Mark Knopfler. Have this one on a very old 45 rpm Single.
Jeff Porcarro's drumming is just as flawless as ever and this was the first time he used a full Brady drum kit on this recording for Dire Straits one of his last recording before his untimely death in August 92. Rip Jeff
I remember the hype for this when it came out as it was Dire Straits' first single for 5 years, following the Brothers In Arms album. There's a great interview somewhere with Gerry Anderson where he talks about creating all the puppets for this video - I think he really enjoyed going back to his Thunderbird days!
Thunderbirds had a cameo appearance by the puppet versions of Cliff Richard and the Shadows, who were playing white guitars similar to the one in the video. With Hank Marvin being one of Mark Knopfler's influences, I wonder if that is where the idea for the video came from!

This is pure brilliance. Yes, I agree. The song is like a love letter between Mark's guitar and Jeff's drums. Brilliant track. The video is clever but detracts from the music.
