I totally agree with you, I'm glad I'm not the only one that can see that, I wish more people would speak out, it's like a conspiracy of silence nowadays, nobody wants to tell it like it is, this society we live in is an even bigger confused and directionless mess now than it was in the 1980's when this was in the charts, at least back then we still had some semblance of a plot, now it's like the plot has been thrown in the bin. The only thing that is saving society from going under and into total anarchy today is the technology, mobiles, internet etc, which even the poorest can afford, unlike decades ago when such technology was something you had to be a Yuppie or very wealthy in some other way to afford, having access to this greater technology is helping us to cope with all the even bigger complications we face nowadays, although I suspect that this technology is a double edged sword and can work just as much against us as for us.
John, the technology is the reason why the powerful ones are pulling our strings and making us deaf and blind. Anarchy is the only way to save human kind.

"My generation will put it right, we're not just making promises that we know we'll never keep." Great fucking job with that. EDIT 2022/11/05: I was wrong. The world is far from where it should be and there’s a lot more to be done, but there’s so much good that’s overlooked because hatred and unfairness resonate so well with our focus. Things that plagued the 80’s such as the HIV crisis, extreme global poverty, and children dying of starvation in Africa, are now largely a thing of the past due to the efforts of the previous generation. There’s a lot more to overcome, and there probably always will be - but life keeps getting better and we’ll figure it out. Have faith and do what you can.
Yeah, my generation and the ones before that have messed up . But we must have hope we CAN change, never give up, never surrender! ( I know it's from a comedy Sci-Fi film, But I think it works)
Lyrics: I must've dreamed a thousand dreams Been haunted by a million screams But I can hear the marching feet They're moving into the street Now did you read the news today? They say the danger's gone away But I can see the fire's still alight Burning into the night There's too many men Too many people Making too many problems And not much love to go 'round Can't you see this is a land of confusion? Ooh this is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh) And these are the hands we're given (Oh-oh-oh) Use them and let's start trying (Oh-oh-oh) To make it a place worth living in Ooh Superman, where are you now? When everything's gone wrong somehow The men of steel, men of power Are losing control by the hour This is the time, this is the place So we look for the future But there's not much love to go 'round Tell me why, this is a land of confusion This is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh) And these are the hands we're given (Oh-oh-oh) Use them and let's start trying (Oh-oh-oh) To make it a place worth living in I remember long ago Ooh, when the sun was shining Yes and the stars were bright All through the night And the sound of your laughter As I held you tight So long ago I won't be coming home tonight My generation will put it right We're not just making promises That we know, we'll never keep Too many men There's too many people Making too many problems And not much love to go 'round Can't you see this is a land of confusion? Now this is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh) And these are the hands we're given (Oh-oh-oh) Use them and let's start trying (Oh-oh-oh) To make it a place worth fighting for This is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh) And these are the names we're given (Oh-oh-oh) Stand up and let's start showing (Oh-oh-oh) Just where our lives are going to
Come on, the puppetry in this is goddamn outstanding. So many different puppets, so geniusly designed, and decently animated. The number of those puppets I think is what amazes me the most. These aren't drawings, you can't easily come up with them on the spot according to necessity, you gotta draw them, build them, perform, and some of them are only on screen for fractions of a second.
To be fair, only two of these puppets had to be made for this video specifically (two of the band members), the rest was taken from the Spitting Image show
*This song should be played in the headphones of all at the united nations, especially the line, there's too many men, too many people making too many problems and not much love to go around*
The story I heard was that the spitting image lot had to make a new puppet out of phil Collins because the old puppet didn't have eyes, because the old phil puppet was always crying into his arms and was "so sad". Then they thought, well we already have the old puppet might as well have him pop up in the background and have him do a bit of drumming where the audience can't notice that the puppet don't have eyes.
I liked the part where the guy is putting ketcup on his tongue and Reagan gets hit on the head by Nancy. Today's politicians are more dangerous than the 80's ones were.
@@borinakoune1803 I like that scene as well. I think the puppet was the artist "Prince". I never got if that scene had any deeper meaning, "we are eating our own words" Todays politicians are not more dangerous than the 80's ones were, their evils are just more out in the open and the peoples outrage is nonexistant. We have 24-7 news which makes secrets impossible, but makes the people in a constant state of blasèd jadedness. Believe you me the evils of most politicians in the 80's is still 30-35 years later the main cause of our troubles.
@@borinakoune1803 i wouldn't consider them more dangerous, it's that everyone as a whole moved more to the right Today's democrats are yesterdays Republicans
Is it? I don't see how. Seems to me more about like, the media and politicians are lying to the people, saying things are better when they're not; and that it's time for the people to rise up and force change to happen. That the world won't improve until we make it better. I suppose that's kinda close to what you described.
It's actually the opposite, which makes it more depressing. They make it very clear that this is meant to be the turning point. That their "generation will make it right" and that they aren't making empty promises. 35 years later and we see now they instead got absorbed by the machine and let things get worse. In retrospect its' a song about stasis, how nothing changes. But at the time, I don't think that was the intention.
@@Crawver No, I'm prety sure this was meant to be timeless not just for Generation X. If that generation fails, its up to the next one, if that generation fails, so forth and so forth. Names changes, identity changes, actors change...but the aspects of ego, greed and what i like to call "sport mentality" is pretty much constant and can take any form. You're not gonna turn this entire rock around, but its still important to strive. We can't knock of every dictator, strongman and autocrat of the planet(exceptions are called for with all the good and bad that follows). But if we get enough people to stop putting "Supermen" on pedestals, then at the very least we won't make it worse. So...nothing changes?...not true...it could be worse.
Teenager here, funny how this song is so true today I also have no clue how todays kids don’t like this music and judge my music taste for liking this stuff, it’s bloody awesome and so much better than most of the mainstream trash today.
This world was always the Land of Confusion, we just didn't see it until a few years ago. I'm amazed that some of the greatest songs from the 80s gave so much detail about the world we were completely oblivious about. But the good part is that now most people can see it and want it to change, so now we are on the right path.
I just saw the version of this by "Disturbed" and I'm feeling very, very sad because nothing at all has really changed has it? I bought this when it came out (I'm 47 now) and my 20 year old son is living in a world that's no different than it was back in 1989 when I was 20. When the Berlin wall fell my dad was full of hope that our generation would be the one that saw a world at peace but now I think it won't happen in my son's lifetime or for that matter his children's if and when they come along. I bet someone could release this in 2043 (when my lad will be 47) and it will STILL be totally relevant. What a crying shame.
We are making slow progress with medicine, science, crimefighting and peace. It's hard to say how much of the enviroment can be saved but there are definitely hopes there too. Sure, there will always be too many people making too many problems so it can be hard to be hopefull.
Amen brother. Same age and I agree. If anything, it's worse today? Gadgets and Internet is better, but that's about all. Employers treat us like dirt, nobody can trust our Leaders.. I do worry about the future for our kids?
I doubt it will be relevant in 2043. At that point in human history mankind will look back, yearning for the era of peace. Enjoy while you can. The clock is ticking.

Temazo de 1986, como siempre phill con su voz espectacular y junto a genesis hicieron esta melodia que a mi juicio es una de las mejores de la decada de los 80s.
While I've heard the song plenty of times this is the first time I've seen the music video. Often I listen to music without really thinking too much about the lyrics, but listening to them along with the music video really put them and the theme into focus. Clearly people were just as skeptical about their leaders then as they are now, and clearly totalitarianism was just as big of a threat then as now. It's eerie how the issues this song highlights seem just as relevant today, but what disturbed me a little was the following verse: I won't be coming home tonight My generation will put it right We're not just making promises That we know we'll never keep They've not managed to put it right, we still face large societal challenges and issues, perhaps even bigger problems with environmental issues and an aging population. A part of me thinks it's demoralizing, are we destined to suffer the same fate, struggling for change just to see the same challenges in 40 years? Or what the more optimistic part of me believes: They faced challenges and societal issues and made change and pushed progress, things got better although all problems weren't solved.

The visuals aren't too disturbing to me. For those who aren't aware, the video was made by the producers of a British satirical show called Spitting Image - which used latex puppets to mock politicians and celebrities of the time. It was a running joke that Reagan was so 'out of it' that he could hit the 'nuke' button by mistake at any time.
"Too many people making too many problems" - the single quote relevant throughout the ages. I'd honestly love to see a 2019 version of it, with no punches pulled.
@IcIcle As awesome as their cover was, a 14-year old song is hardly "new". And what I meant is not even a new version of the song, but more a '19 version of the videoclip, showcading our current "too many people making too many problems".

One of the most iconic music videos of all time, right up there with Smooth Criminal and Thriller and spitting image was one of the best things on tv back then.
"My generation will put it right, we're not just making promises that we know we'll never keep."
Great fucking job with that.
Have faith and do what you can.
boomers had it too good. hence why they shIt on younger generations with ease.
Why don't we fight for it nowadays??? Are we lost?... Don't we have concepts at all???
Maybe the point of that lyric is that every generation wants to change everything but they end up doing the same thing. The cycle repits itself
@@franciscovilches4358 God that's such a negative outlook 😕 have some hope .
Yeah, my generation and the ones before that have messed up . But we must have hope we CAN change, never give up, never surrender! ( I know it's from a comedy Sci-Fi film, But I think it works)
I really miss the times when I was playing in my room as a child while mom was cleaning the household listening to Genesis or Phil in general.
And that's why music is so great, it takes you back there.

This is really too good for our world) one of the best songs in the whole world. The best by words.
Lyrics:
I must've dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
They're moving into the street
Now did you read the news today?
They say the danger's gone away
But I can see the fire's still alight
Burning into the night
There's too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go 'round
Can't you see this is a land of confusion?
Ooh this is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh)
And these are the hands we're given (Oh-oh-oh)
Use them and let's start trying (Oh-oh-oh)
To make it a place worth living in
Ooh Superman, where are you now?
When everything's gone wrong somehow
The men of steel, men of power
Are losing control by the hour
This is the time, this is the place
So we look for the future
But there's not much love to go 'round
Tell me why, this is a land of confusion
This is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh)
And these are the hands we're given (Oh-oh-oh)
Use them and let's start trying (Oh-oh-oh)
To make it a place worth living in
I remember long ago
Ooh, when the sun was shining
Yes and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago
I won't be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We're not just making promises
That we know, we'll never keep
Too many men
There's too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go 'round
Can't you see this is a land of confusion?
Now this is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh)
And these are the hands we're given (Oh-oh-oh)
Use them and let's start trying (Oh-oh-oh)
To make it a place worth fighting for
This is the world we live in (Oh-oh-oh)
And these are the names we're given (Oh-oh-oh)
Stand up and let's start showing (Oh-oh-oh)
Just where our lives are going to

@@kaori-himawari How awesome, this song has universal meaning, I think it deserves world wide attention and recognition.
Words still relevant today and will be in another 30 years no doubt.
Come on, the puppetry in this is goddamn outstanding. So many different puppets, so geniusly designed, and decently animated.
The number of those puppets I think is what amazes me the most. These aren't drawings, you can't easily come up with them on the spot according to necessity, you gotta draw them, build them, perform, and some of them are only on screen for fractions of a second.
man i wish they brought spitting image back
Yeah, they are great works of art and craft
@@Victor-jx7lt they did last year
To be fair, only two of these puppets had to be made for this video specifically (two of the band members), the rest was taken from the Spitting Image show
We're still living in a land of confusion!

2:17 - I always liked that little nudge to the audience, that there are 2 Phil's puppets - one singing and one drumming.
Lol, never noticed that before!
I never got if that scene had any deeper meaning, "we are eating our own words"
Todays politicians are not more dangerous than the 80's ones were, their evils are just more out in the open and the peoples outrage is nonexistant. We have 24-7 news which makes secrets impossible, but makes the people in a constant state of blasèd jadedness. Believe you me the evils of most politicians in the 80's is still 30-35 years later the main cause of our troubles.
@@borinakoune1803 i wouldn't consider them more dangerous, it's that everyone as a whole moved more to the right

This Synth-Bass Rhythm kills me every time. It’s gold!
This is not a song…it’s an incredible forecast!!!
Well what he sings about was the past, present and future. We're animals, we'll never change.
Nos vamos todos a tomar por el culo, con ésta gentuza que gobierna el mundo. Que pena habiendo para todos.GENESIS O APOCALIPSIS TOTAL.
I would say it's a commentary that's ever valid.
Those people saying "this fits 2020 so well", the WHOLE MESSAGE of the song is that nothing changes, ever. Year in, year out, it's all the same shit.
Is it? I don't see how. Seems to me more about like, the media and politicians are lying to the people, saying things are better when they're not; and that it's time for the people to rise up and force change to happen. That the world won't improve until we make it better.
I suppose that's kinda close to what you described.
Actually thinking about it some more, you're dead right. Nothing changes unless we make it change; and we never make it change.

I'm afraid the clocks are in danger of turning even farther then that, 70-110 years even.
Fucking hell please let me be wrong.
Human nature doesn't change. So you get the same old problems and conflicts over and over again down the ages.
2022 now it's a whole World of Confusion. Stay strong everyone. LOVE, POWER and HOPE to you all out there!!! ❤💪❤

😊Totalmente, es una super pieza
De chiquito uno le da miedo las imágenes

While I've heard the song plenty of times this is the first time I've seen the music video. Often I listen to music without really thinking too much about the lyrics, but listening to them along with the music video really put them and the theme into focus. Clearly people were just as skeptical about their leaders then as they are now, and clearly totalitarianism was just as big of a threat then as now. It's eerie how the issues this song highlights seem just as relevant today, but what disturbed me a little was the following verse:
I won't be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We're not just making promises
That we know we'll never keep
They've not managed to put it right, we still face large societal challenges and issues, perhaps even bigger problems with environmental issues and an aging population. A part of me thinks it's demoralizing, are we destined to suffer the same fate, struggling for change just to see the same challenges in 40 years? Or what the more optimistic part of me believes: They faced challenges and societal issues and made change and pushed progress, things got better although all problems weren't solved.
The 80s, better music, better politicians.
One of the best videos in history.
Isn't it? I sort of feel bad that I had to watch it twice before I realized that was Ronald Reagan though...

The visuals are more disturbing than disturbed. Imagine the disturbed song w these visuals.
+Vaas Montenegro YES
And replace the eighties leaders with modern ones. Potential gold there.
That is actually a pretty good idea
