  • Episode 240: What happens when your family gets sucked into fundamentalism, and your father insists on controlling your life, including who you will marry? You grow up under Christian patriarchy, and you experience serious emotional abuse. Today Cait West joins us to talk about her absolutely beautiful memoir Rift, about how and why she had to break free. Then Keith and I talk about why people are deconstructing, and why it’s so desperately important to listen to stories like Cait’s.

My family was also involved with Vision Forum and my ex husband was a pastor of a family integrated church. It’s a very dangerous situation for people married to narcissistic and unstable partners and their children. I’m now a single mom with 6 of my 10 children still at home.

No one deconstructs from the grace of God!🤦‍♀️ they are deconstructing from abuse, control and being victimized by other's sin!

Thank you for acknowledging that everyone is on a different journey. I was raised in religion and ended up in two toxic churches . It wasn't until after I left organized religion, that I actually started to study the Bible for myself. I started on path of going from a head knowledge to a heart knowledge of Jesus. I do longer believe in blind obedience to a pastor. I believe that we should question everything against the word of God.

We say both "Happy 4th of July" and "Happy Independence Day". Happy Canada day!

Yes. We in the USA refer to it by both terms interchangeably.

I slowly started questioning and deconstructing after 2001 because the pat answers didn't help with real life pain. Then i met all the people my fundamentalist training told me to hate, and they were normal people, and I questioned more. And then 2012 racism and the GOP "tea party" happened and then 2015 the betrayal of all the faith leaders and theology i was raised with destroyed my trust in evangelicalism and pentacostalism. The bad fruit was too much, the emotional manipulation is too much. My faith is stronger than ever, it just doesn't suffer abusers and fools.
Accordingly both sides of my family consider me an apostate. They don't know me.

2012 racism and the GOP Tea Party? WTH does the TP, an anti-higher taxes movement have to do with your personal life? I'm so tired of people believing in left wing memes as if they were real.

@@TGP109 a troll doesn't deserve a polite personal response. But just so you have the chance, like I did, to find reality outside the poisoned air of the fundie bubble culture...Try starting at "Jesus and John Wayne" by historian Dr. Kristin Du Mez. It mirrors events in my own life history as part of the Evangelical extremism I was raised in. What I fully think of the tea-party and it's troglodytes is neither printable nor a reflection of Christ's mercy. As an American, I neither forgive nor forget their hypocrisy, open bigotry, pretend patriotism or their shortsighted "policies". You calling me a liberal is an honor by comparison.
