In relation to modern orchestral tuning, one could say yes. It is a matter of perspective. The period of these compositions was Baroque. The Baroque tuning was almost A4=415Hz (440Hz -100 cents = 415.3046975799438Hz) which is almost Ab in modern tuning, if one could define any standard from that period. If the key makes any difference in color, then this choice of tuning is likely the closest to what Bach had in mind when choosing the key for this composition. That comes in contrast to several other interpretations of Bach's cello suites on the double bass, where the solo instruments are commonly set up with solo tuning, which is one whole tone higher. That makes many interpretations 1 /1/2 steps away from the original intended keys. Most great interpretations on the cello are tuned to modern A4=440Hz, anyway. The same applies to violins Sonatas and Partidas, all Teleman's, all Bach's and all other Baroque compositions. Downtuning usually requires its particular instrument set up. In the case of double bass, an adjustable bridge and sometimes a proper string set should do the trick, in other words, it should be easier to tune properly. I think if one is going to record an epic performance like this one, every detail matters. Look at the bow, the instrument, the church, everything adds up, just like the baroque tuning. However, It seems not to be considered so sacrilegious for most people to play baroque music in whatever tuning standard the instrument is set up to.

I’m just so surprised the bass can hold such huge scordatura which must imply a special set of strings for them to be tuned a major third up compared to normal tuning. That would be way too much tension with both solo or orchestral.
@@pietroeliabarcellona some companies have started doing high C strings for bass, i know pirastro do a flexocor deluxe C, these look like spiros though, wasnt aware that they did one
