Wish I got into folk punk earlier, I would’ve loved to see pat the bunny live
I was into folk punk fairly early and never got to see em lol It wasn't a guarantee. Especially the way he did shows and as much as I was on the road back then.
I was late getting into folk punk. 2011/2012. Not sure why; I was into punk since I was a teenager in the 90s. I feel like I'm very lucky that I was able to see - & meet Pat - twice, both at house shows in Huntington WV. The 1st was Ramshackle Glory in 2013 maybe (with the Taxpayers) The 2nd was just Pat acoustic while he was touring with Ceschi. Not sure when exactly. 2015 maybe.
It was alright, what was better getting introduced to the wild who opened for ramshackle.
I keep hoping that one day Pat will re-emerge and release something new. But so long as he's happy doing whatever he's doing, so much the better.
@@JakeStrange66 I lived near Huntington during both of those shows and can’t believe I didn’t go. Big regret.
Great video, but you cant talk about folk punk without mentioning Erik Peterson.
Your a real one
Erik was truly an awesome guy. I'm lucky to have met him, but he wasn't associated with Plan-It-X Records though.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Good old fistolo records
Erik
I know this probably doesn't matter, but this video is why i started listening to The Taxpayers
Rob is great, he's from Ohio and a chill dude to talk to. Do you listen to Ceschi too?
Def matters
This was a good video. Pat the Bunny's music specifically (johnny hobo, wingnut dishwashers union, ramshackle glory) really helped shape me into who I am today. It's really nice to see people still into this niche genre that I thought was dying off.
punks not dead!
A punk rock song won't ever change the world, but I can tell you about a couple that changed me.
Truer words.
@@vorpalrabbit4927 man i miss him
I still listen to Pat all the time I even have the chicken from his album art tattooed on my arm. His music has strangely been a huge part of my life.
@@skylerowns8818 I've found my people
Defiance, Ohio’s “The Great Depression” is still the best GW Bush protest album. The One Reason album was also incredible. Sad story about Plan-it-x though. Thanks for posting this.
Great video! I would love to see a video on Pat the Bunny and his history!
That would be cool ass fck. I haven't heard much about him lately. Never coming home i guess. 😢.
@@paulsecrest9427he moved to Brooklyn and got a real job. Probably won’t hear from Pat again.
Pat got me clean
@@kerryknell6639 that's awesome!
You should check out the Back On The Grind podcast. Episode 15 is about Pat
Would love to see a video on Erik Petersen
Love this video man
I was a dirty kid traveller back in the day hopping trains hitchhiking and sleeping under bridges. Ajj and pat the bunny followed me the whole way. I'd meet other punks on the road and we'd sit in vans or around fires singing songs by these guys.
That's awesome! Their music was a big part of why I started playing guitar. Did you ever get to see any cool bands live while on the road?
Haha I ended up randomly seeing days n daze with a friend from hometown who was in railyard ghosts, I liked ajj and others as well but that was before I was crusty good times
I heard some allegations against one of the members of Rail Yard Ghosts too. Haven't heard much else about it though. There's also a guy in my hometown who traveled around a few years back that had several allegations against him too, some while he was traveling & some of them from here in our town!!! (Actually he was convicted of them.) It sucks that it seems that it's not that uncommon. 😢
@@JakeStrange66 I mean some people are just bad people lol
@@TROBassGuitar well, yeah. There are bad people everywhere. My point is how much of it there is in a punk scene that's so opposed to that kind of behavior, if that explains it better.
I'd do anything to feel how I felt at pix fest 2014/2016. The downfall of Chris/PIX really reshaped my later adolescent years. Ever so often an AJJ or Defiance, Ohio song will pop up on a playlist I'm listening to. Inevitably causing me to return to the rabbit hole that was folk punk music only to forget and do it over again.
pix fest 2016 was just amazing ..way too hot but life changing
@@tugboatfool i hope vodka jesus is still out there blessing souls with the liquid from his bottle.
Damn, man. This was a great video. I'll be sure to keep an eye on your uploads. Thanks for this
The introspection at the end was amazing man. That feeling is always a difficult one to parse and it was comforting to hear somebody else put it in their own words.
I've been into folk punk since like 2015 and this is one of the coolest videos I've watched. Thanks for making it super cool.
Glad this came up in my recommendations. Thanks for the video.
You have sent me on one hell of a music rabbit hole with this video
I remember being a huge Ghost Mice fan and having this shit unfold. I had to literally explain to people who it’s not okay to defend an abuser even though he made some of our favorite music.
Best video by far ive seen on folk punk there's like 5 hope you make more
Great vid but sad to see no love for my favorite band when I was into this label/music, This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb! 😛And of course their awesome release on Plan It X, Front Seat Solidarity! Anyway, lost interest for a few years and then when I came back to see what the label and bands were up to I was floored to hear that it had completely shut down and the reasons why. I lived in Germany at the time I was into folk punk so I was never able to go to any of the fests or see a bunch of bands from the label although there was a few European bands that played similar tunes. I did get to catch This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb however, in Germany during their European tour and they played an awesome show! 😄
Thank you for this special gift
Saw AJJ live pretty recently, and I hope Against Me reform soon because i absolutely adore Laura and her music!
new album of laura is coming in 2024
Great content my guy, very well made
brings back the highschool days :') 2006 cruising around in the Fall on my bike listening to defiance ohio, ghost mice, ajj....
Miss planet-x, don't miss Chris.
Awesome video, dude.
Fun fact Spoonboy's early first album and the acoustic versions of "The Papas" was considered folk punk DIY at heart. easy to get confused, also BTMI (Bomb The Music Industry!) oddly enough was one
BTMI, are all a bunch of my old friends. So crazy how big they got. Jeff is an amazing human though, always has been, even back when he was a teenager. I have pics of him back when he was 16-17.
@@anadamvargasblunt that's real sick, did you happen to play in ASoB or meet the infamous Chris Valentino
Pat is ❤
Whew boy this brought back memories. One of my first DIY shows was an Operation:cliff clavin show at Chris’ house. Plan-it-x was a staple for us misfits in my small southern Indiana. town
I was never really a fan of his music but I've been in and around the scene for a long time and it's meant a lot to me. They had a huge impact and place in the community with the label, festivals, everything, so it was painful to see when this all came out. Couldn't go more against the values we've all stood for. Makes me sick.
Goddamn I remember all this happeing in realtime in a very popular Folk Punk facebook group. Its gone now. But I met Pat on his last tour. Wonderful person honestly.
The more I learn about the music industry, the more often my skin crawls😮
It's interesting to see what peoples take on Chris, Plan it x and folk punk are that got into it way after I stopped being involved with it. I went to the first plan it x fest in bloomington. I got into it from political pop punk, since that was the first stuff they were putting out. It felt like everyone really took influence from the acoustic Against Me stuff. But by the time I had gotten into it Against Me were already seen as sell outs and a lot of people seemed to want to move on to other bands that had that same feeeel.
It honestly was really exciting to see this scene that seemed like a natural extension of crusty anarchist stuff. Like we can have this ying to a yang and still be gross punks. We can listen to Aus Rotten and Dropdead but we can also listen to This Bike is A Pipebomb and Erik Petersen.
That first plan it x fest was very exciting. You could see the potential, the variety of folks that all kind of came to a similar conclusion about music and politics. I was 17 at the time so it seemed very positive. I made some lifelong friends there. It was also very exciting to think that everyone could just "move to bloomington" and join the commune in a way. I didn't, but I know a lot of people did. And that's bananans to think now. Imagine this weirdo accidentally becomes the face of a scene and everyone believes you into thinking that Bloomington, Indiana of "Breaking Away" fame was your logical next step.
Anyway, I think that in the late 00's folk punk was so pervasive and had some how already gone through a few waves. It felt like the message DIY and openness and inclusivity above anything had just let a lot of creeps in, and also a lot of it was bad bad bad. I stopped listening around the time Ghost Mice did their Europe record.
Sucks that Chris turned out to be awful. I often wondered what Hanna's take on all that was since she seemed to be very close with him for a long time and had been in 3 bands with him (that I know of).
Most of the stuff I liked seemed to fall under the Plan it x south umbrella and I still think a lot of that holds up. This bike, Sexy, One Reason, and Madeline are great. And it was cool to get introduced to bands like Japanther through the label.
I’m like, do we know each other? Also, weird that he’s calling him a folk punk legend, since mostly he was in pop punk bands. I was playing folk punk in the mid 90s. Not knowing there were other folk punk acts. Rymodee had one prior to This Bike. And I got so excited. Also, I played a show with Against Me! The first time they played NY. All they had was their original 10” and they had their new 7”. But they were still using bucket drums at the time. They asked me to do a split 7” with them, and I never followed up on it, stupidly. I had my first comp appearance in 1996 and then was on another one in 1997, but none of my other stuff was ever on any labels, just self released. the Devil Himself played my house, as did other PiX bands. I mean, bands from tons of labels played my house back then.
Part of me wishes the folk punk isn’t dead, just going through rehab
i lived in bton and knew lotsa ppl from this scene. some cool folks but alotta trust fund kids, poverty tourists, and terrible pretentious cringe music. the whole diy scene back then... i just never fit in and made very few friends. chris was especially snooty to me. but to be fair i really dislike folk punk as a genre. i wanted to get into it but it just makes me feel embarrassed lol nice vid!
You regret getting the book!?? Chris drew my big chest tattoo and I am quoted in his second 😪
But you're right... the community is bigger than any one person or band and I'm still glad as hell to be part of it
Its like damn shawty everything i ever seen or heard or looked at got a dark history
Gosh! All those Memories! I was so much into this stuff. I have the same book lying around here somewhere + loads of CDs MCs and LPs. When Chris posted on fb, that he was looking to play a show in south west Germany, I couldn't help but get him to come to play my hometown. The first show I ever promoted. 2016 I went to Plan-It-X Fest saw Pat play his last show. So glad I was there. In hindsight, it kind of was the end of the scene.
Maybe it's my despise of today's cancel culture, but I'm not sure If the scene handled Chris' situation right.
You're heavily depressed and you are also the king of a scene full of teenagers. I definitly can see how you can develope the kind of behavior he showed.
Grew up with this music and scene. Miss it tbh
Awesome short video, I personally was more a Oi! Punk , pogo punk. Always love some good folk punk tho, all the bands named I like.
Someone should ask Chris “what did you do with the bodies?”
Would love an update on what he is doing today if anyone has one. I'm guessing working a basic 9 to 5 and in an entirely different scene all together, keeping a low profile and just trying to get by, but having met him several times, printed inserts for some of his releases and gone to almost every pix fest, my curiosity always gets the best of me...
@Zachmiller86 I seen something not too long ago that he was trying to put his music back up on Spotify but under a different name. Total scumbag.
Dude you have a copy of Kyle Hall Shoulda Held on Tighter - can you send it to me? I lost my download of the album years ago and haven't heard it til now and the nostalgia was real.
I also want a copy
Same 😊
who does taxpayers singer remind me of??? or who is it? edit: reminds me of two gallants
Kinda tragically poetic how his Chris's last post has the words "against me" in it.
What's the song at the end of the video? 😊
Lesson learned. At least at the end of the day, no punk rock song will ever change the world. Everything changes so fast, so long as we can cry to songs we've heard in the past we still try to understand. We have to keep going back to the caveman stuff to have any hope of surviving. The people in control will always keep taking things away from us and those younger. We will have to keep adapting as long as we can. Just think about it for a bit. These rich ass holes never stop, your neighbor might be a vet with $400,000 that agrees with you. Be open. Right and Left don't matter anymore, we need a hero...
What’s the song at the end?
Oooh this was a good ass video
Whats the outro song?
The song is from the artist Kyle Hall off their self-titled album, although you might have to do some digging to find it since he completely wiped his music off the internet and disappeared. To this day, I still have no idea why.
It was a sad day when I realized Kyle Hall's "The Cool Ranch" performance had been removed from UA-cam. I emailed Kyle years ago and they were extremely kind, although I did not ask about what happened to his online discography. @@killmekatiemusic
@@killmekatiemusic I talked with him in the past. tldr is he moved on with his life and did not want the music to come up on search engines. There *technically* still an active band of his (prob broken up alrdy)
Dont forget folk punk pioneer Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Blonde even wrote a song about him
Hate to say it, but when I think of folk punk, I think more of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy's, The Tossers, The McGuillicuddy's, or Gaelic Storm. Yes, I just listed a lot of punk bands with Irish ties to them, but they are the original artists that I've listened to growing up, and there's one thing I've heard in there was an acoustic guitar, tin whistle, or some other folk guitar being played along with the guitar, bass, drums, etc.
I hate to gatekeep but that's not really folk punk and they probably don't claim to be, but you should check out Barrett’s Privateers, Riding a Raid by knox massey ( Scottish Bonnie Dundee), and Blackbird Raum in general (but especially False Weavers album)
@@mikew3194I don’t know any of those other bands but Dropkicks and FM play traditional Irish folk inspired punk rock. If that’s not “folk punk” then words mean nothing.
@@SteezyMart They tend to get called celtic punk, but they're undeniably inspired by the first wave of folk punk (which was near simultaneously popularized by the Violent Femmes in the U.S. and the Pogues in Ireland and the UK). I'd personally put them all under one wider label of folk punk, but it's slightly confusing given that the wave of folk punk described here is clearly a distinct movement that didn't see fit to give itself a subgenre name.
@@xerxsesbreak8455 Celtic/Irish trad is our folk music in Ireland, and most (especially older) don’t consider what DKM, FM, etc. do to be legit trad so it makes sense the Celtic punk tag never took off here
Check out Mischief Brew if you’re into those bands.
Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley was a musician?
Back in like 1996 my band played with Operation Cliff Clavin at a basement show in my home town. I thought they were pretty cool at the time. The end.

I met Clavin a couple times back in the 00s. He always struck me as a full of himself prick. I wasn't at all surprised when the allegations came out.

I met Chris Clavin after a Ghost Mice show and my initial opinion of him was he was a cocky asshole with a chip on his shoulder and me being more of a hardcore kid at the time and well dressed like a hardcore kid was probably the reasoning for snobbiness but I bought a pile of music from him anyhow, just thought he was kinda of a douche bag. Turns out… I was right. I’ve met the fakest people in punk and hardcore, it is what it is. I still enjoy Operation Cliff Clavin, and I’m able to separate the artist from the art. Still a rad record label I wish someone took it over.
Hmm.... A human being can channel great things and horrible things. So black and white while mixed together....

Half the reason punk is dead these days. Overrun with horseshit. Most of the kids in it these days have no grit, won't actually fight a nazi and get piss drunk in the street. It's all performative politics.
