I'll never forget in around 2015 probably only 6 so months before Plan It X announced they were shutting down, Chris posted on his E-bay that he was selling a "mostly" complete collection of his Captain Chao box set he released. I was a huge fan of that project and even though it didnt come with the wooden CD holder and I think it was missing one of the albums, I still ended up bidding on it and winning. Shortly after winning Chris messaged me on E-bay apologizing that I payed so much for 5 CDs and a little stuffed Monkey. I probably payed about 60 bucks for it. He ended up sending me all kinds of PIX goodies like stickers and drawings and a couple extra CDs. I was so happy being really into the Folk Punk scene at the time, I still have it all packed in the same box he sent it in. I look through it every once in a while but its just makes me sad now. How someone who was so influential in the scene ended up doing some horrid shit. I feel the same way you do with owning the book, I almost feel bad I bought it, but I also feel like I own a part of Folk Punk history. Lovely video though, brought me back to highschool for a bit

A lot of these bands got me through some messed up times in my life, shooting dope and drinking myself practically to death. I was really pissed they wouldn’t let us listen to Pat the Bunny in rehab 😂❤ If you’re reading this, your heart is a muscle the size of your fist. Keep on loving. Keep on fighting. And hold on TO your life, because it’s worth it. You can always do it later but you can’t take it back. You know what I mean if you know what I mean

Lesson learned. At least at the end of the day, no punk rock song will ever change the world. Everything changes so fast, so long as we can cry to songs we've heard in the past we still try to understand. We have to keep going back to the caveman stuff to have any hope of surviving. The people in control will always keep taking things away from us and those younger. We will have to keep adapting as long as we can. Just think about it for a bit. These rich ass holes never stop, your neighbor might be a vet with $400,000 that agrees with you. Be open. Right and Left don't matter anymore, we need a hero...

Great video! Another great album from 2016 was Psychopomp by Japanese Breakfast, not sure if it was in the book tho. But tying back to the premise, i feel like 2016 was such a great year for music because it kickstarted a good amount of careers (from what I've seen). Up to interpretation, but these albums may not be their best work but are a key point in their discography. Like for JBrekkie, Jubilee is her (imo best album) most celebrated album but Psychopomp is "where it started".

I think the ending of your video where you talk about appreciation and open mindedness towards genres really captures acasters perspective towards music. Cause it really segues well into his later music project (temps) where its a mashup of 40 artist and genres, something that can really only be done well with that mindset

I met Chris Clavin after a Ghost Mice show and my initial opinion of him was he was a cocky asshole with a chip on his shoulder and me being more of a hardcore kid at the time and well dressed like a hardcore kid was probably the reasoning for snobbiness but I bought a pile of music from him anyhow, just thought he was kinda of a douche bag. Turns out… I was right. I’ve met the fakest people in punk and hardcore, it is what it is. I still enjoy Operation Cliff Clavin, and I’m able to separate the artist from the art. Still a rad record label I wish someone took it over.

Hate to say it, but when I think of folk punk, I think more of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphy's, The Tossers, The McGuillicuddy's, or Gaelic Storm. Yes, I just listed a lot of punk bands with Irish ties to them, but they are the original artists that I've listened to growing up, and there's one thing I've heard in there was an acoustic guitar, tin whistle, or some other folk guitar being played along with the guitar, bass, drums, etc.

I hate to gatekeep but that's not really folk punk and they probably don't claim to be, but you should check out Barrett’s Privateers, Riding a Raid by knox massey ( Scottish Bonnie Dundee), and Blackbird Raum in general (but especially False Weavers album)

@@Sabhaois They tend to get called celtic punk, but they're undeniably inspired by the first wave of folk punk (which was near simultaneously popularized by the Violent Femmes in the U.S. and the Pogues in Ireland and the UK). I'd personally put them all under one wider label of folk punk, but it's slightly confusing given that the wave of folk punk described here is clearly a distinct movement that didn't see fit to give itself a subgenre name.

It's interesting to see what peoples take on Chris, Plan it x and folk punk are that got into it way after I stopped being involved with it. I went to the first plan it x fest in bloomington. I got into it from political pop punk, since that was the first stuff they were putting out. It felt like everyone really took influence from the acoustic Against Me stuff. But by the time I had gotten into it Against Me were already seen as sell outs and a lot of people seemed to want to move on to other bands that had that same feeeel. It honestly was really exciting to see this scene that seemed like a natural extension of crusty anarchist stuff. Like we can have this ying to a yang and still be gross punks. We can listen to Aus Rotten and Dropdead but we can also listen to This Bike is A Pipebomb and Erik Petersen. That first plan it x fest was very exciting. You could see the potential, the variety of folks that all kind of came to a similar conclusion about music and politics. I was 17 at the time so it seemed very positive. I made some lifelong friends there. It was also very exciting to think that everyone could just "move to bloomington" and join the commune in a way. I didn't, but I know a lot of people did. And that's bananans to think now. Imagine this weirdo accidentally becomes the face of a scene and everyone believes you into thinking that Bloomington, Indiana of "Breaking Away" fame was your logical next step. Anyway, I think that in the late 00's folk punk was so pervasive and had some how already gone through a few waves. It felt like the message DIY and openness and inclusivity above anything had just let a lot of creeps in, and also a lot of it was bad bad bad. I stopped listening around the time Ghost Mice did their Europe record. Sucks that Chris turned out to be awful. I often wondered what Hanna's take on all that was since she seemed to be very close with him for a long time and had been in 3 bands with him (that I know of). Most of the stuff I liked seemed to fall under the Plan it x south umbrella and I still think a lot of that holds up. This bike, Sexy, One Reason, and Madeline are great. And it was cool to get introduced to bands like Japanther through the label.

I’m like, do we know each other? Also, weird that he’s calling him a folk punk legend, since mostly he was in pop punk bands. I was playing folk punk in the mid 90s. Not knowing there were other folk punk acts. Rymodee had one prior to This Bike. And I got so excited. Also, I played a show with Against Me! The first time they played NY. All they had was their original 10” and they had their new 7”. But they were still using bucket drums at the time. They asked me to do a split 7” with them, and I never followed up on it, stupidly. I had my first comp appearance in 1996 and then was on another one in 1997, but none of my other stuff was ever on any labels, just self released. the Devil Himself played my house, as did other PiX bands. I mean, bands from tons of labels played my house back then.
