    Not a bad idea to take a bush broom and drag behind ya for final “drag” as you wanna be sure there’s some grass blades poking through the sand.. The broom essential “brushes” the grass.. when done with your drag passes be sure to water 💦 it in wanna het the grass coming through asap.. I always apply a liquid fertilizer app just prior to any “leveling” aids in the grass 🌱 🌱 ability to punch 🥊 through the sand 🏝

      Not a bad idea! I actually used a take with very thin tines and lightly raked up the blades. Would do this every couple days especially in the heavier low spots.

    What did you use to get the gras so green?

      I threw down a fast release nitrogen fertilizer a few days before the project to push growth

    Can we use cow manure instead?

    • @HomegrownHowTo
      @HomegrownHowTo  Рік тому

      You can add composted manure to the lawn but it can do more damage than good. I would probably shoot for an organic green compost vs manure.Regardless of compost type just make sure it is no longer hot when applying to the lawn.

      It’ll burn the grass if it’s too hot out.

    Why is sand preferred?

    • @HomegrownHowTo
      @HomegrownHowTo  Рік тому

      Sand is preferred in my instance because I’m using it to help amend my clay soil.I could have also used a topsoil/sand mix. If people have a sandy soil id suggest using topsoil.

  • @LazyLifeIFreak
    @LazyLifeIFreak Рік тому +2

    I wouldn't use pure sand for leveling out the lawn, I would've used 40% sand and 60% soil. Sand is all rounded particles meaning they won't lock together and have no ability to maintain moisture or nutrients.

    • @HomegrownHowTo
      @HomegrownHowTo  Рік тому +4

      I used the sand to amend my heavy clay soil. Before topdressing I did a heavy core aeration and used the sand to fill in the holes while leveling. I also plan on topdressing with compost in the near future as well. For certain instances, I’d agree with you. But this method will help loosen up my clay a lot. 💯

      @@HomegrownHowTo Sand won't do anything from my experience or understanding, now you have a lot of sticky clay mixed in with sand and still nowhere near the 'crumb' structure you should have. On top of that, no pun intended, any top dressing you add will not adhere to the clay, the clay will act like the glazing of a sponge cake, the sprinkles will just slide off.

      @@LazyLifeIFreak it will amend the soil from my experience. Help with drainage and nutrient uptake. Some of the best lawns I’ve seen in person in my area have done this- not to mention golf courses. 🤷🏼‍♂️ hopefully for my case I’m right and you’re wrong 😂. Time will tell. Thanks for your input though. 🤜🏼 🤛🏼

      Topsoil doesn’t level as well. Sod won’t level. Sand is just fine 👍
