Paktika Province, Afghanistan - After spotting Taliban forces on a distant ridge line, U.S. Army mortar teams engage with 60mm mortars. A simultaneous airstrike is called in which accidentally drops a 500 pound bomb on a U.S. Army infantry outpost, mistaking the position for Taliban fighters.
Luckily there were no friendly casualties in this rare incident, due to the First Sergeant's decision to bring everyone to "stand to" before the drop. It is still unclear what caused the pilot to target the wrong position.
"If it wasn't for the decision of our First Sergeant, three of our guys would have died in that wooden building which was shredded by shrapnel."

That wasn't the pilot asking, that was the other guys down below who were watching. The pilot didn't have direct contact with the boys in that outpost. But yeah, you can hear his panicked voice. It actually sounds like the guy who says "yeah, I know!" at the end of the video when they see the base get hit.

When my dad was in the isreali military, a similar incident happened, a friendly plane dropped a bomb on the tank directly next to his. If the bomb had fallen a couple yards closer to his tank, I wouldn't be here.

Matthew Merrell It wasn’t directly on their pos. It was a few meters down the hill, like they pointed out. The incline definitely saved some lives.
You can find a video showing the results of hitting Russian 1000 pound bombs on flat ground near buildings. These are very impressive videos. So yes - the soldiers were lucky that there was no direct hit.

That’s why you train, train, train, train and when you thing you’re good at your job you go into training and start all over again.. Just like you said, like second nature and that’s because it’s exactly that, second nature! That’s why the military spends countless hours and countless dollars training every single soldier in their area of expertise.. I know for a fact it works because during my time in Country I’ve been in situations where I transitioned from my M4 to my sidearm and back before realizing what I’d done… That is 100% training. Trained so much you just react w/out thinking. It’s only then when you can say you’re truly trained. Then, you continue to train so you never loose your edge!

@@LSPD1909 In this situation it was. The Coordinates were wrong (probably mixed up the 2 numbers somewhere and put it off by a click) and the pilot dropped where he was told (and probably from quite high up as well, so he had no visual aid).
